This has been my neighborhood post office. I moved though. My wife continues to reside in the area. So I still come here from time to time. I wonder what will happen to post offices in general. We still receive correspondence written by hand by human beings. My wife's family has instilled in every generation the importance of writing thank you notes. The ratio, however, of junk mail to personal letters/postcards must be 100:1. And we would be among those outliers likely receiving more genuine material intended for us as individuals. I happen to like visiting the post office as well, like libraries. They are civic institutions. The efficiency here is about average; the line moves along. But the friendliness of the staff is exceptional. I see various reviewers have commented on the clerk named Darcy. She is chatty in the best sense -- USPS hires many employees ("there's always work at the post office"), and they ought to be encouraged either to look for other prospects like her or train them. The others also are cheery. I have a post office I rely on where I live most of the time, and the folks there are, to be honest, not engaged at best and sullen at worst. read more

No problems with personnel at this location. Problem is with Distribution Center for boxes left off at P.O. at 821 Irving Street. Boxes usually sit in distribution center in S.F. for 2 or 3 days without moving regardless of what day they are posted on. Expensive, clearly addressed packages sent via priority mail to Silver City, New Mexico, 2 states away, are being routinely routed to Indianapolis, Indiana, where they sit for a minimum of 3 days. Customers cannot call or text or message postal personnel anymore, they are just sent around in circles and referred to endless, useless on-line articles. Problems are not acknowledged or documented or resolved. So nothing changes. Ground Advantage boxes take l.5 to 2 weeks to arrive in Silver City, NM, and most have been misrouted to Colorado, Alburquerque, and other locations, or made to go through 3 or 4 locations in Texas despite having legible, printed address labels. Talking to employees at the local P.O. doesn't help, even when they are presented with the receipts/postal slips from which they can see the tracking problems. If anything customers are handed a slip of paper listing postal contact phone numbers and internet links that nobody answers or whose links don't work. Customers have been totally locked out. And problems cannot be reported to postal inspectors, the links don't work and the site isn't currently being manned allegedly due to government shutdown. Customers have to just wait for several weeks to see if the packages get delivered. I just posted a priority mail box that cost almost $26.00 and was supposed to have arrived Saturday, 10/25/25 - but didn't because as with others it was misrouted and is sitting half-way across the country. So priority boxes that should arrive in 4 or 5 days are taking 8 days or more to arrive at destinations just two states away! Bottom line: Customers are being routinely ripped off and mislead and shut out by the postal service. USPS cannot fix problems they don't acknowledge! read more

Darcy is the greatest! Always helpful and looks out for you. Even on a Saturday at five minutes before closing when I had three return receipts requests to be sent certified mail, Darcy made sure I had filled out everything correctly and remained patient and friendly. I know she was not able to close at 1pm because there were people behind me in line. Especially now days, that is customer service at its best. Insanely bad!! I spent hours upon hours writing a hundred thank you cards after my wedding and brought them here to ship- none of them were delivered- ever. I had to waste tons more hours to rewrite all of the cards and I sent them from a different post office and guess what? They delivered no problem. I thought I'd give this one another chance with my special handmade post cards from Japan, it's been months and no one has received them. Do NOT ship anything important here because there is a high probability that it'll never be received or even shipped in the first place. Once upon a midday cheery, I ventured out to the Golden Gate Park area for soothing my spirit which was weary. There on the Irving St horizon was the faithful red, white & blue of the US Post Office (Inner Sunset). In a flash, I dashed in and found NO Line (!). Loaded with visions of crowds with boxes to mail off for Xmas, I made the quick purchase of stamps for real cards to friends and family all around the globe. No needing to weigh the cards, the kindly counter post office agent knew from LONG experience how much it would be! Europe? Asia? First-class USA. Done, done and done! How easy was that!?! read more

This cute little post office is walking distance from our apartment, and it has the feel of a mom and pop store. The service is good. They typically have a short line - when I get there I am often the third person in line, or something like that - the wait is not bad, since there are two people working. It's a good place to get your choice of stamps, mail packages and take care of other business. read more

Contrary to a lot of reviews here I quite appreciate this post office. They have funny cards, it's an excellent location, they have what you need and your needs get met. I kind of expect long lines, it's a post office! I also enjoy interacting with Darcy. People complain about her asking questions but HELLLLLO it's her obligation to ask these questions, it's required of her job people! I think she deserves more respect. It's a public service to be a postal employee, so it's upsetting to see that people think they deserve so much. read more

It's really nice to have USPS in this area and it is open on Saturday - props! This is one of the postal facilities open Saturdays, it's good and convenient since consumers can take care of their postal business. There seems to be one employee working at the window counter during the day. Sometimes there are two or three of them working at the counter. This is one issue I have noticed all along at some of the other post offices I have been to. I noticed how reviewers are complaining about this issue. It seriously would be very nice to see an employee at each window counter. Overall, great spot for a USPS facility. The next time I am in this area with postal transactions to take care, this will be my go to post office. It is conveniently located across the street from Bank of America and Sheng Kee Bakery. 03/25/2014: Sam was the only one on duty at the retail window counter, but he was patient and friendly. One of the customers ahead of me and 2-3 other customers had a few large boxes to ship. This was certainly one large transaction to keep Sam busy. Sam was calm about it which he really deserve bonus points for. Seriously, it'll be very nice if they had 2 employees at both windows. I do like that this post office facility is a little more spacious compared to the one on 22nd Ave and Irving St. All in all, it is very nice to have a post office facility nearby. IT NEEDS to be said: the post office over all is great. The OTHER employees almost make up for the bottleneck and long lines that Darcy creates. The lines are a crapshoot, but there is one certainty: Darcy- I do not even leave STAMPED MAIL with her... AND -It's UNREAL how long a simple transaction can take: DARCY: "Anything liquid, fragile, flammable or perishable?" ME: "It's a postcard." DARCY: "Ok- so flammable then..." It's probably just me. I'm very old fashioned. I believe that a person cannot be both totally inept AND condescending. It's an either/ or situation. Favorite error to date: She failed to see a GIGANTIC box that I had placed on the counter in addition to the letter that needed a stamp. WTF? I was charged for a ONE Stamp and sent on my way before alerting her to the box inches from her vacant head. I try to take a positive approach and pretend that I'm in a third-world country in the 1700's trying to send something- but even THAT would be more efficient. If I see that it's my turn at the counter, I'll let the person behind me go to her instead, but some customers are wise to that trick and have told me that they too have complained, but that she is "unfirable" for some reason. Today's episode: I was trying to mail original art. It was in an envelope that I had reinforced with two pieces of matte board- thicker and more durable than cardboard. Everything about the parcel says DO NOT BEND. She takes the envelope and starts TESTING THE LIMITS of the matte board by proceeding to flex and bend it. HOT TIP: If you are next in line and she's your clerk, just leave and lie down under oncoming traffic. It'll be much easier. read more

I dread going to most post offices. They're usually always understaffed and you always have to end up grabbing something or filling some paperwork in that you weren't expecting to - as soon as you finally reach the front of the line. Eugh - I so dread mailing stuff out - that I just don't do it. If I tell you I'm going to mail you something - I'm warning you now - don't believe me. Because I probably will never get around the momentum to the ominous post office. But if I really - really - really -really want to mail you something - I will. And instead of enduring the agonizing waits downtown - I pop into this lovely little post-office - which is always relatively easy to navigate and never has too long of a line. Wait. I need ID to buy stamps with a check? Seriously? Wow. So beyond that little little tidbit of information I found this branch to be on the slow as a snail side of service. Most post offices I know beyond the Macy's branch take their time about things but this one was particularly slow, not even having anyone at the front to cover them while they chatted behind the doorway in the back. I give it a three instead of a two because the gentleman who picks up the mail from the box out front tended to flag me down when when I would make it just as he was leaving, thereby getting our envelopes out that day. The staff at this location are more personable than other SF locations, but they're just as incompetent when it comes to providing transparency/information/service when things go wrong. I had important legal documents that required expeditious delivery to Illinois. Upon asking the postal agent about my delivery requirements and mailing options, she thought it best to use Priority Shipping for $7.35, instead of Priority Express Shipping for $25.50. With Priority Shipping, it was posted on the board that the documents would arrive to their destination within 1-3 days - no exceptions posted. The agent verbally guaranteed that The recipient would receive it by the 2nd day, by 3PM. With Priority Express Shipping, the documents would arrive the next day, by 3PM. Given the cost and one day difference, I took her advice and paid the $7.35 for Priority Shipping, and the receipt even confirmed delivery by the 2nd business day. I had used the USPS tracking site to see where it was, and to my dismay, saw that it was actually sent towards the opposite direction and ended up in Texas! I tried looking up solutions on the USPS website, tried calling their customer service number, and spoke to the agent and the manager at this USPS location. No help, at all. In fact, the manager gave off this not-my-problem attitude while stating that Priority Shipping DOES NOT GUARANTEE DELIVERY WITHIN 1-3 DAYS. I asked the agent why she told me differently, and was interrupted by the manager with the same excuse. I then asked why this isn't posted on the board, to which the manager didn't have an answer. I asked why anyone would want to pay $7.35 for such terrible shipping, when one could simply pay 55 cents for the exact same shipping outcome... still, no valid answer. With no help from the manager, I was finally able to find a customer service phone number that provide real person assistance. She could only confirm that the letter was now leaving Texas and was on it's say to Illinois and would not reach it's correct destination until another 4 days! I asked for a refund for the difference of $6.80 that it would've cost if I had just paid the 55 cent first class shipping. She stated that they could not, so I filed a dispute with my credit card company. Lesson learned: never using USPS for anything important. FEDEX is the way to go. read more

I really like this post office. They treat me well, and my mail gets to where it needs to go when it needs to be there. Darcy is my absolute favorite employee, she handles everything I need to do professionally, has a great sense of humor and is generally very easy to work with. I was there around 2 pm today and it was very quiet but I have been there on days when it was packed and Darcy was equally easy to work with. I completely disagree with anyone who criticizes her, check your own attitude first. I also like the other employees, everyone is friendly and easy to work with but I like Darcy because if I think of anything funny to say, she throws her head back and laughs and I like being around people who have a sense of humor. read more

I am writing this review because of one terrible experience. And because it's about one terrible experience I'm giving this 4 stars since it's otherwise a good place. So here goes my cautionary tale: AVOID DARCY. To Darcy's credit, yes, I had a bunch of stuff - 3 boxes and 5 packages of media mail, 2 priority mail envelopes, and 3 letters that just needed stamps. Total time at the counter: 40 minutes. Things she kept asking me about the media mail packages after I told her they were all media mail: "Is this media mail?" "Is this a return?" "Is this express mail?" "Is this media mail?" "IS THIS MEDIA MAIL?" And you know when you want to reuse a box and cross out the old shipping label? Well I had crossed them out with a ball-point pen. But that wasn't good enough for Darcy! She had to color the entire label with a sharpie to make a perfectly blackened box. Eventually her coworker stepped in. "Darcy, it's 5 people to 1 and counting. You can color that in later. We need to get this line moving." I look behind me and the line, which had zero people when I first approached the counter, was to the door. I will be amazed if all those packages make it to their intended destinations. USPS - if you read this, please give Darcy a drug test or something. Or changer her job to crossing out old shipping labels and give me her job. read more

I'm surprised at the amount of negative reviews about this post office. People need to have reasonable expectations for the Post Office. You can't expect high quality service when you decide against FedEx and UPS and opt to use USPS. If anything my frustration stems from the other customers who use this Post Office. There have been too many times that I have to wait longer than expected because someone doesn't have a clue as to the services and forms to fill out. I assume the people who wrote the negative reviews about this location are exactly those people. It's online, just look it up at home. Don't expect them to take your package, read your mind and be on your merry way. The times I come and the crowd is small, I'm literally in and out in less than 5 minutes. This is your typical post office: slow and inefficient. I've waited in line a long time here, but in general the employees are fairly friendly. All in all, it's a two-star rating situation. But it gets an additional two stars because of the amazing '80s advertisements for PO boxes. You really have to see them. Tiny location, so sometimes there can be a long line. If possible I would avoid early morning before work, lunch and of course Saturday. I can't complain about the postal workers. Every time I've come here the service has been very friendly. Some of them are a bit slow in getting your order done, but you really can't complain much when you actually get a smile out of a federal employee. read more

2 usps employees at counter I waited in line for 30 minutes and then my turn (only four people in front of me when i arrived). I started to step forward - the man at the counter - reaches under the counter to proudly display the CLOSED sign at this station. I took a deep breath and waited for the other to finally finish, yeah if my turn. Nope, when someone steps infront of me that had omitted something the first time and the mean asian lady starts yelling at her she did it wrong again, my good luck her bad.....yeah its my turn. Nope, the other lady that mean asian lady originally helped forgot a letter she had in her purse. The reason in her purse it did not have postage. Lucky for me she had the exact change until she decided to buy a sheet of stamps - but first needed to inspect all the options. Finally transaction done. My turn FINALLY. NOPE, the lady that filled the form out wrong she is back at the counter. New employee comes in and I was like thank you, Im next - well after the getting situated and counting her fingers and toes was finally up. She was babbling in some mumbled language about the weather and her cat. This was the best experience I have encountered at this location....therefore give it a 1 star. I could not rate the other ones as there is no other option Maybe an idea for YELP is the NO STAR. And the winner is: USPS Irving the worst USPS in the US. read more

The slow demise of the USPS makes me sad. Did you know that its creation was authorized in the Constitution?! We take the postal service for granted. We just assume that slapping a $.44 stamp will get that letter where it's supposed to, and don't think about the logistics that go into that. Think about it. It's mind boggling. Now they're gonna start closing down offices and but for the grace of Ebay, the USPS is only losing hundreds of millions of dollars a year. So I guess this review is not only for this particular post office branch, but for the postal service as a whole. Yes, I have to deduct one star because there's no parking for this branch, there are only a couple of workers at any given time, and it's a post office, so don't expect lightning quick service. Still, the workers are always pretty nice, they have most of the mailing supplies you need to send out your stuff, and pick up some forever stamps while you're there, why don't ya? Next time you drop your Netflix movie into the blue mailbox, stop a moment and appreciate the service you're taking advantage of. read more

Understaffed, but you can't blame the local workers for that. All in all a pretty typical small post office, with generally nice and helpful employees. Around the holidays the line can go out the door though ,so plan ahead for that. One thing of note is they have a pretty decent selection of greeting cards, so this is a good one stop shop if you need to send one to someone. read more

I still think my biggest problem with this branch is the lack of an automated postage machine. Are they that expensive? I mean I love person to person interaction as much as the next guy, but waiting in line for 20 minutes for a 2 minute transaction for simple postage is a big waste of time. They used to at least have a machine to buy stamps, but after that thing shorted me and others several times, they took it down. Beyond that, service is good and professional; and most of the time comes with a smile. The older Asian man that works the counter there is a miserable, angry person. He snaps at customers in an extremely inappropriate tone and has absolutely no multi-tasking skills or abilities. His scathing remarks to loyal customers is concerning. No one should be able to talk to people the way he does. I almost left in tears today because of him. Usually USPS lines are never ending, no matter which branch you go to. Today there was no line. I like how this place has less people than the Post Office on 22nd & Irving. There's usually only 2 workers, so you'd think it would take forever, well sometimes it just does. NO PARKING, just fyi. It gets CRAZY around Christmas time. I try to avoid the hustle & bustle by printing my own postage and walking right up to the front and hand it to the cashier or leave on the right side of the counter for them to take. One of the better post offices. The best thing about the Irving street post office is that it's rarely busy. It also has friendly, helpful staff who take the time to help you find the best shipping option or show you the new stamps. Not surprising that it's 1 star worthy. Rude lady refused service to me after she treated me like dirt to begin with. She actually took her "next window" plate and placed it in front of me like you would see in the movies. If my postage is underpaid, and I ask NICELY to pay for a new one, THEN LET ME FREAKING PAY FOR IT. Why continue grilling me and have a nasty attitude about me underpaying over a HALF pound? Seriously? The fact that my weight guess-timation was only off by a half pound should indicate to you that it was simply a guess. Go get a life. If you don't want me to have a bit***attitude with you, then don't have one towards me in the first place!!!! DO. YOUR. DAMN. JOB. OR QUIT!!!!! No one is forcing you to be miserable at the usps. Hey, what's with all the negativity here? It's a Post Office, not a day spa, fer chrissake. The work is repetitive and relentless, the pay isn't that high, government funding is limited, and they're dealing with the unwashed public -- 'nuff said. Sometimes I think people show up with an attitude, expecting a bad experience no matter what. Except for the frequent long lines, everyone here has been helpful and knowledgeable, if perhaps a bit weary. I've noticed you often get back what you put in -- if you need to be catered to regardless of your behavior, you should consider becoming a Hollywood celebrity or joining a new age religion. I stop by this post office every day for work. I love spending the day at 9th and Irving. I do not love this post office anymore. Some sort of recent change took away my favorite postal lady (CC) and replaced her with a new boss-esque person...Edie. Everyone working at the post office since Edie came on looks miserable. The twins, the guy who was in a neck brace for awhile (I guess I'm not hip enough yet to know their names) look like a morbid pall has cast a shadow over the neighborhood staple and the post office is now a funeral parlor. Although the line is always long and the employees can get a bit stressed and every once in awhile someone has a little mail tantrum; they usually have some good music playing and people are very relaxed for an urban post office - lots of little kids and quiet laughter. My two cents can be best represented by two examples of recent post office experiences that have sucked royally. BTW, I know naming names isn't nice when you're complaining on a public forum but she's wearing a huge friggin' white name tag that boasts, HELLO MY NAME IS EDIE on it. Example 1: Yesterday... I stopped by to check the p.o. box and accidentally pushed one of the packages back into the sorting room. I got in the short line - one guy in front of me - and zoned out for a minute. 1 minute turned into 2 and I eavesdropped on the conversations going on at the counter. Dude in front of me turned around and glanced at me, a panicked, caged-animal look in his eyes. I started to worry. One of the twins was working and so was Edie. Grrr. The twin's customer was trying to pull together a package to send out. At the counter. And he was letting her. Anyone in his or her right mind knows that it is a total faux pas to pack things at the counter. Normally you'd get the postal laser beam of doom pointed at you if tried to pull that kind of crap. I furrowed my brow and looked over at Edie's customer. Oy. What a catastrophe. The guy had about 100 large envelopes that he swore up and down contained the same document and therefore were the same weight. Edie disagreed. A small amount of bickering ensued and the guy acquiesced and let her weigh every effing envelope. I bared my teeth and made some sort of angry, ridiculous face. Normally the twin would say hi to me as I'm a regular customer, but no dice. Dude in front of me emitted some sort of chemical that let me know he was just as annoyed as I was. Twin finished the packing lady, took care of caged-animal guy. 10 minutes had passed. I was the only one left. Edie was still dealing with envelope mess and needed help from twin. Twin went over to help. I told myself to be patient and tried to remember some mantra I'd learned in yoga. Twin went back to his desk (another 3 minutes had passed) and looked down. I stepped up to the counter, said 'hello, how are you' and was met with the sad gaze of a person clearly on the brink. It was like watching a gazelle in the grip of a cheetah. A cheetah with a white name tag. I quickly retrieved my package and escaped the wild tension of the post office. Example 2: Today... I brought in two packages headed for Canada and France. We have a postal meter, scale and those little green customs forms at work, and I had everything ready to go. I'm one of those schmucks who bypasses the line and turn in my packages on the right end of the counter. No one is in the p.o., and I walk up to where I normally turn in aforementioned packages. Edie is closest to me and former neck brace wearer (FNB) is to my left. He is looking down at his desk and she is going through some forms. I stand there for about 30 seconds. Neither acknowledge me. I get fed up and say, 'hi, these are all set to go, I'm just going to leave them on the counter like I normally do.' Edie looks at me like I'm holding a kilo of cocaine in one hand, dead kittens in the other and am dressed up like Santa Claus. 'Ok,' she sighs, 'whatever,' as if I've asked her for a bag of diamonds and goes back to flipping through forms. FNB guy does not look up, clearly a victim of whatever emotional torture she's put him through. I say in my best bitchy voice, 'Thank you soooo much for all your help, you've been great.' and stomp out of the post office. Harrumph. Cattiness aside, I feel bad for the employees who work there. They have to put up with every 9th and Irving customers' shite, absurd amounts of bureaucrazy and more ignorance and verbal abuse than just about anyone in a government position - DPT ticket people excepted. Edie is ruining their work environment and that should be noticed by the customers and reported to the proper folks at the post office. read more

I can't believe I'm writing a yelp review for a post office. But I checked yelp for store hours and read some negative reactions to folks' experiences at this location, and I have to chime in. I come to this post office all the time to mail packages. Everyone I've ever dealt with has been INCREDIBLY helpful. They are the nicest people and they have patience. If I had to deal with people like some of the negative and complaining patrons in the reviews below, I would not have a lick of patience with people. But the employees who I've encountered are consistently kind, patient, and go out of their way to be helpful. For anyone complaining about lines at a post office, I have nothing to say. It's a post office. Enjoy ten minutes of down time already. It may be the only moment of peace you have in a day. I love this neighborhood post office. I am grateful we still have this valuable service in our country, and I'll continue to go to this location specifically for how well they treat their customers. read more
