Essential indeed. Once things started shutting down, the community's question was what will stay open. With Chinatown being mainly comprised of newcomers to our fair country, many of whom are seniors, keeping in touch with family didn't necessarily mean that everyone had WeChat, telephone access, or any other means of communication outside of San Francisco. I stopped here several times for various reasons to send certified mail, packages, and buy stamps over the past six months. The main concern these days? Is it safe. There are signs posted and markings on the floor to limit the number of customers in the building. 85% of the people observed the directions but a few masked visitors stood by the left wall trying to figure out how they wanted to send things, the only social distancing violators there. Luckily, I was towards the other side and quickly completed my transaction. The other 85% followed the clerks' instructions and stood in line according to the spaced floor stickers. The clerks and customers were further protected with the clear plexiglass dividers at the counter. Five stars for protecting the neighborhood locals and staff under these trying times. Let's just hope this new normal doesn't become permanent, especially with the predominantly senior demographic here. read more

Recently on business in San Francisco, I needed to send out a parcel asap. Now, I know many people are partial to certain carriers when it comes to shipping packages and documents, however I am a fan of USPS. It's technically a quasi-government entity, and it's not dysfunctional as everyone thinks. They are actually quite efficient and effective as well as affordable; you can't get many 2-3 day services for a medium sized box for $17 tracked and insured...federally. And moreover their employees are loyal. I digress. This USPS location is within walking distance from downtown, has 2-3 windows open, is not very busy, and the postal employees are friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this location. read more

World's worst postal office. I had to send a parcel international at the Chinatown office. I was packing my item with a rigid package and the person at the desk recommended to use an envelope. I followed her advice. Result: after 3 days the pack is back. Reason: I had to use a rigid package instead of an envelope. To pick it up I had to go till north-beach. I took it and I went back to the Chinatown office for a refund and to resend the pack. They said that for the refund it was necessary a supervisor and they had not, so I had to go back to north-beach if I wanted. Congratulations, this is the worst performance I ever seen in a postal office in any nation. read more

This post office location may be a bit smaller and generally busy with a long line, sometimes out the door. They should consider having more teller windows open so the customers can get their post office transactions completed immediately. Staff members here are actually nice and patient which is always a good thing. Some of the staff here speak both English and Cantonese, so this is also helpful. Of the times I've came in, the employees were friendly and took care of my postal transactions in a timely manner. Thus, I always walk out of this USPS location with a positive experience. There are some USPS facilities that do open on Saturday and this one happens to be one of them. This location gets 4 stars because: - staff members are friendly - indoor lobby drop box (available at most USPS facilities) - they are open until 4:30 pm on Saturday 08/09/2014: It's very rare coming in without a line virtually out the door. I came in and got my mailing business taken care of immediately. My postal transaction was a smooth one today. An absolutely unusual instance when there's no line upon entering. Going to the post office is like going to the dentist or the DMV. You're either somewhat annoyed, in a hurry, or generally displeased before you even walk in the door. So Yelp-wise, you're sort of set up for badness. So I will only judge the Chinatown post office based on my experiences with other post office and unfortunately, they have a lot of room for improvement. Cutting to the chase: they have none of the fancy new machines for self-serve package sending. This is particularly tough here because it's very rare that the lines aren't long. And while this may be a little, hm, impolite, it does seem that the average patron here is always conducting some insanely complicated postal transaction. Even when I'm shipping something internationally, I'm in and out in less than 2 minutes. But somehow most customers are always seem to be having some sort of contentious discussion, filling out forms in triplicate, and, generally making me wait much longer than I should have to for my priority mail package drop. On the plus side, the people working here are perfectly friendly and helpful. I don't even mind their insistent upselling of stamps and packaging materials. But if you can avoid it and walk the few extra blocks to the post office on Sutter & Kearny, I'd recommend doing that instead. read more

The Chinatown Branch Post Office is a hidden gem! All the clerks are multilingual, and even though the lines on Saturday (yes, they are open on Saturday too!) can be long, they keep them moving. I have never been treated with anything but extreme courtesy, helpfulness, professionalism, and, that rare quality in today's world: kindness, at this little P.O. For example, I had to mail an international package, did not know which service to use, how to package it, etc. -- and it had to arrive by a certain date with proof of shipping, tracking, and at a reasonable cost. After a wait in line, the clerk helped me find the right service, packaging, and guided me to a table where I could package my item, then telling me to return to the head of the line to her window when I had finished. (Of course, I had to pay for all the stuff I needed to mail the item including the tape, it's not a freebie!) Five star customer service all around---and EVERYONE was being treated the same way. I heard Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish being spoken, as well as English. If you're in a panic about how to mail, this P.O. will make the others pale by comparison! I've been here twice and failed to accomplish my mission both times. 100% failure rate pretty much qualifies as "it sucks" in my book. This branch has a very small footprint, which comes with a cost. The first time, I went by to fill out a change of address form, but they were out of them. Really? How hard is it for the US *Postal Service* to send forms to its branches to make sure they have them in stock? The second time, I wanted to mail a magazine to a friend, but they didn't have any non-Priority or Express Mail envelopes or boxes. As I had no intention to use either of those speeds of delivery, I left secretly glad that they didn't have what I wanted since the line was 10 deep. The verdict: I have given up on this location and plan to take my business elsewhere. read more

I dread going to this post office. I will rather walk all the way down to Embarcadero Center where a more functional post office exist. Pros: 1. Convenient location off the MUNI 45, 8x, and 30. 2. Bilingual- Cantonese, Mandarin, English 3. Historic- Love the decor. Con: (many many many...) 1. Small, crowded! 2. Long, LONG, lines! Expect to wait at least 15 minutes even on a slow day. 3. No electronic machines/APS. 4. Customer service lacks and can be improved. 5. A bit dusty? 6. Difficult to find parking. 7. No machine to even purchase stamps! Review #1227. I am cheap to ship and always try to be creative with the flat rate envelope. While they didn't carry the flat rate bubble wrapped envelopes, they had the paper ones. And the post office person was super nice and creative with me together! He offered multiple ways of shipping and then went on calculating total costs for each, then did a comparison for me. Love how Chinese think alike. He then proceeded giving me the USPS tapes and assisted me on how to tape around the envelopes so they would not break. So instead of paying close to 50 bucks, I only paid $33.90! Thank you for making my life so much easier and kudos to my frugal heritage! read more

Seriously, I sometimes wonder what makes employees in a certain USPS location provide better service than others. Went to this location to drop off a package today and this location never ceases to surprise me. A nice lady greeted at the entrance and asked me what I need help with and guided me accordingly. Could not find pen, asked her, and she ran over to get it. The lady at the counter was as sweet if not more. She smiled. yes, she "smiled". Worst post office ever... Everyone in line is metering 1 letter and counting pennies for 10 Stamps. Don't come on your lunch break.

This post office is BUSY but if you're lucky, you can try to catch it at the rare times where there's no line at all. Otherwise, you'll be stuck in a line with 20 people in front of you. Love the super convenient location but this review is really for the staff. They're friendly and helpful and when you consider how much crap they put up with, you really appreciate them that much more. They may not be the most smiley (but who would be if you got tons of customers just yelling at you) but they're helpful and make everything a smooth process. read more

Went to the post office today and was surprised that the line wasn't out the door as it usually is in Chinatown. To make things better, there is now a Caucasian guy who works there and he is fast, friendly and efficient. I was able to successfully mail two packages in under 4 minutes. I went to the USPS in Stockton ( 1048 W Robinhood Dr) and payed for a certified mail that was delivered to a wrong address, even though the address was VERY CLEAR to read. I spoke to the customer service and they were RUDE and NOT helpful at all. I will need to pay around U$ 250.00 dollars "fine" because my envelope was delivered to the wrong place. this is a very small post office...especially considering how crowded it is in chinatown. the stockton post office is only about 3.5 blocks from me and I go there regularly. i only go to the chinatown office on saturdays when i need to mail something late (they close at 4:30!) dont bother trying to find parking anywhere though. the line usually goes really fast and they have 2-3 windows open. surprisingly, the employees here speak better english than the ones in the north beach post office! and theyre a lot more friendly and helpful. on a side note. there's a place nearby called poon's. that's all. read more
