The staff here is always so nice, helpful, and patient (especially when I've witnessed people taking frustrations out on them for something they have no control over). What is the point of setting up an appointment if you won't respect the appointment time? There was a couple with a two month old baby with a passport appointment who had been waiting for 80 mins. After completing the passport application for the person right before, the attendant went on a break, without a word about her leaving or when she'll be back. Looks like there are many complaints about this location but nothing is changing. read more

Joshua was AMAZING!!! He got me in when I didn't have an appointment. I so appreciate that! I didn't know anything about a passport renewal; I didn't even know you needed a check which I didn't have. He helped me with a money order and he was so patient. Give that man a raise!!! read more

Everything about the layout of this post office was not well thought through, from the parking lot all the way to the interior. The parking lot has two narrow lanes, with parking on both sides, and a drive up mail box on one side. So basically if there's a line for the drive up mail box and cars trying to back out on the other side, it's just chaotic. Also, there's a limited number of spots in the lot which normally isn't an issue (because who mails things anymore?) except during the holidays, it's crazy trying to get in/out. The inside of the post office isn't much better. There are PO Boxes on the left side of the "lobby" and then the self service stations on the right. At the end, separated by a door, is the office where the employees work. Again, if there's a line, it's really chaotic because the line will go out the door and will crowd the lobby area. I try to avoid going when the post office is "open" and staffed and only use the self service kiosks....but half the time they're broken, so I end up having to either come back or go to a different post office. read more

Multiple packages and pieces of mail that I have sent from this Post Office never reached their destinations. After filing a request for investigation on a package, it was then subsequently delivered a month late. Why it couldn't be found until I filed an investigation on it is troubling. The same has occurred with letters mailed here. Many of the workers here are both unfriendly and slow. Lines are often out the door and when you ask to speak to the manager, they are never available. Do yourself a favor and avoid this Post Office. read more

DON'T TRY TO GET A PASSPORT THERE!! They cancel at the last minute (like literally 2 hours before an appointment made 4 weeks ago) because they "don't have a passport agent today." I had heard of this from other people but I assumed they were exaggerating. Nope. This was for our 14-year-old daughter, so both parents had to be physically present. We are both in health care and arranged our patient schedule around the appointment. Now we have to start from scratch and make a new appointment (again with a mandatory FOUR WEEK lead time). We're going to the main post office in Seattle next time. read more

Complete disaster. Don't be fooled by the open hours you see posted on Google and elsewhere. They change them at whim, and without announcement or official notice. Currently they don't open until 9 AM, meaning people who work for a living have to wait until Saturday. During January, their exterior dropbox was vandalized, so in response to this, they also helpfully locked down all the interior lobby self serve and drop boxes, so you literally couldn't mail any packages unless you were there during their open hours. Recently, I went in on a Monday - having adjusted my own working hours to accommodate their schedule - and tried to buy some lunar new year stamps. However, they refused to break their own street date of Wednesday, and sell me the stamps, even though they had them. When I went back that same week on Friday, I was informed they were "sold out," so demand planning seems not to be an area of competency either. Business avoidance seems to be the name of the game. They are also extremely inflexible with their rules: The guy in front of me asked the clerk to put a label he had printed out and addressed himself on the box for him, and the clerk literally refused to put the label on the box "because you filled it out yourself." The rules also require customers who address their own packages to then proofread the address on a tiny screen after the clerk has retyped it in, so that they can print out an additional label. I put the address on myself, I don't want to have to proofread your work! So in summary, no non-working hours open hours except Saturday; no stamps; no drop boxes; and zero flexibility. Unfortunately, they have a captive audience here on the island, and it seems doubtful that things will improve. read more

US Post Office - Exterior drop box vandalized and disabled - January 2024 - Post Offices Near Me - Mercer Island, Washington

This is a really small post office with only 2 clerks and the most obnoxious, smallest parking lot and entry/exit set-up I've experienced at a post office. There is one way to drive into the parking lot, with only one lane to get in, which is also the same lane for the drive-up mailbox. As this lane attempts to have vehicles move into the parking area section past the mailbox, pedestrians are going in/out of the post office slowing down traffic while vehicles that are parked can't back out and leave due to cars moving forward. Be patient and don't expect to get out of here in a hurry. The lobby is so small, there's room for maybe 5 people to be in line before they would be outside of the lobby and into the main area with the PO Boxes. I wanted to buy some of the new Halloween stamps, and the postal clerk abruptly told me there wasn't any issued this year and that there never had been. Explained to her that there was a set of 4 this year with a different picture for each and last year there were jack-o-lantern stamps. She then softened up a bit and said that she didn't know about them and hadn't seen them. read more

Needed 40 stamps today so I sauntered into the MI post office this morning and BAMMO they had stamps including JKF stamps. Nice lady got me through the payment process with minimal headache which is a blessing considering it's the Post Office. Noticed a wall of PO BOX's and starting thinking of grabbing another. On my next trip I'll inquire about them. Well other than this it's a nice tiny location in downtown MI and that's all Frank has to say about that, OK! read more

I'm pretty irritated right this minute since the automated postal machine has been broken since before Christmas (so over a month now) and it does not appear they've added staffing to cover it. The lines have been on average 10-14 people each time I've been there. And the agents always look annoyed to have to be there. Then today I didn't have a zip code and they told me they couldn't look it up. You are the POST OFFICE! You can't look up zip codes? Not to mention your broken automated postal machine DOES! I had an international package that I spent 60$ on shipping returned to me. It was because customs rejected it. I asked about being reimbursed and she told me flat out no. Not her problem. And THEN I sent a 100$ in a envelope -certified mail over Christmas. I know they frown on sending cash but it was to my little sister through a volunteer program and she has no bank to access a check. Out of all of the hundreds of letters I have sent, this is the one that was "lost". Not lost. Stolen. I am certain. USPS gave me a royal runaround on that one. I like my mail carrier, and last month a piece of mail was lost and they made an effort to find it, so that was nice. But that's pretty much it. Let's up our game, USPS read more

For having one of the most affluent zip codes in Western Washington, Mercer Island has one of the most run down and out-of-date Post Offices I have ever stepped foot in. It's truly a shame this old building sticks out like an architectural sore thumb among all of the new development surrounding it. The brass plaque on the front of the building eludes MI post office has been there since 1961....and it definitely shows its age. Super small, poorly designed office, long lines of waiting customers and extremely slow, inefficient service. No sense of urgency whatsoever. Floors, window sills and overall atmosphere has a layer of dirty film that hasn't been cleaned in eons. If you're thinking you'll be in and out quickly, you'll need to reset your expectations to stand patiently and wait.....and wait.....and wait. I had 2 manila envelopes addressed to Canada that needed postage. For both to post, it cost about $8. I handed the clerk a $20 bill cash....he didn't have change! What?! I ultimately used my debit card to make the transaction easier for him. The drive-up blue mailbox in the parking lot was pushed off to the side and marked "out of order". That box was the best thing MI post office had going for them, and now it's broken. No one inside knew when it would be fixed. Seemed as tho my question was a major inconvenience to ask. Adding to the already sad array of problems at MI post office......no drive thru = zero convenience. Your tax dollars at work. Sigh. read more

The line is out the door and there's one person working the register. She yelled for the other person in the back several times. That person was "busy." No one here cares. This place is a joke. The worst part was the customer (guy) at the counter that wouldn't make a decision on his small package for over 20 mins. The employee should have the option to tell the person to move to the side. Maybe the guy should have looked on the internet for what option he wanted to go with before going to the post office. His actions were so out of this world rude. read more

Purchased a box here to ship something light. Staff seemed friendly but not very knowledgeable about the size of their flat rate priority mail items. After I prepared the shipment in my car, I was assisted by a different clerk who wanted to charge me again for the box. Even after I showed the receipt, which she acknowledged, she kept the charge on my tab. She indicated that she would also charge me for the tape that I used. She couldn't explain though how I had used heavier tape than the post office sells made by Scotch which I had purchased at Target and had brought with me but not into the post office building. After I explained that I had used my own tape and did not prepare the package at the post office, she repeated that she was going to charge me for tape. They have a video surveillance camera. At my second response that I did not use USPS tape she admitted that she could not charge me for something I had already purchased elsewhere. She did explain that USPS had recently changed its shipping rates. For a non-standard large box (any dimension over 12"), there is a surcharge. This surcharge does NOT show up on the receipt however. What they do is double the weight of the package. Very confusing. If you go to the USPS website and print your postage there, the difference between the online and in-store price used to be 10 or 15% perhaps. With the recent price change, the difference for my 2-day priority mail package of just under 5lb was now 67%, or a whopping $25 (without signature confirmation or tracking) vs. $15 (with tracking) online. read more

I come here after hours to use the automatic post office machine. Had been to apply for passport at this location , it was worst experience the staff does not know how to take photograph of a new born , she was doing all sort of experiment with 1 month old . Inspite of this worst experiment like asking us to put the child on floor for photography .. at last recommended to go to near St photo shop to get the photo and come back. This post office is a joke. I live 0.6 miles from this office. I also routinely receive mail from outside the US. It takes longer to be processed and delivered by this office than it does for my mail to cross a foreign country in the South Pacific, cross the Pacific, clear customs, and travel North along the West coast to Seattle from San Francisco. I routinely get mail "hand delivered" by people that live in the same building of my apartment because the mailman is incapable of consistently matching addresses to the proper box. I strongly suggest anyone affected on Mercer to contact USPSIS, write our congressman, and sign the online petition to the "Postal Board of Governors" to get the postmaster over this office fired, as she can't line this place out. It's unacceptable that these people will receive a pension, at our expense for this kind of job performance. Just look at the other reviews here! These people are abusing the public trust. Until rectified, the only solution is to cut them out of the mail delivery chain by getting a UPS box downtown. They can't lose/steal/mis-deliver what they are not trusted to touch. read more

For months the drop off box was closed with a sign hanging on it saying it was "broken" (how can a box with a slot in it be broken?). Finally it got replaced . . . by a much taller box, so only people driving huge SUVs can actually roll down their windows and put letters in the slot. The rest of us have to pull up a little ways out from the box and get out of our cars to put letters in the box. Ridiculous! read more

What can you say; a post office is a post office. They're not terrible (at least most aren't) and they will most likely never be great. This location is no exception. Though it might not get as busy as other locations (say the lower Queenanne location by the space needle) it can still take awhile to get your packages sent. Why? The elderly. I love them to death, but, to no fault of their own, they're just a bit slow when it comes to shipping packages and having a grasp on what to do. Which can make it so that one person can take up to 10-15 minutes of the post office workers' time. My solution? If at all possible, pre-print your package slip. Go in. Skip the line. I just want to give a two thumbs up to the woman who dealt with a rude elderly couple today while I was waiting in line to return a package. I'm not exactly sure what the context of the argument was, but it had something to do with the couple needing to give the post office identification that they were legal residents of Mercer Island. The woman who was helping them kindly told them that the paper that they were using to identify themselves as legal residents was not a valid form of identification. By this time the man was getting riled up and telling the employee that it WAS valid and started shoving papers at her. The woman then replied, yet again in a very calm voice, that there was no reason to throw things at her, that she was going to take care of them and she was only following policy and needed valid identification. Guess what his argument was? "Do you allow dogs in here?" "Only service dogs." "Well the woman before me brought in a non-service dog and no one said anything." First of all, this employee who came to the counter to help these people was NOT THERE to see this dog come in. She proceeded to tell them that their issue was unrelated to their policies on pets, and the man then replied that he was only telling her about her stringency on policy. Sir, if you are reading this, I just want to say that anything that has to do with picking up mail or doing something that requires identification as a legal resident IS WAY MORE SERIOUS than someone bringing in a dog and getting away with it. After a couple more minutes of raising his voice at this woman and attempting to convince her that the print out page was valid enough as proof, the woman accompanying this man threw her phone down on the counter top, angrily ripped out a card from her wallet and slammed it on the countertop for the woman to look at. She then proceeded to yell at the employee saying this was the second time that they had to come to the post office to deal with whatever issue they were dealing with. Whatever she gave the woman must have been valid proof because the employee then said, yet again in a calm voice, "Ma'am, if you had this identification all along then why did you allow this argument to continue as long as it did?" Of course this couple probably left the place thinking the employee was in the wrong. I hope they know that the only people they made fools out of were themselves by raising their voices and disrespecting the person that was attempting to communicate respectfully with them. Seriously, shame on people like these who think they know someone else's job better than the person who works it and are so full of themselves that they can't see clearly who is in the wrong. Yes, USPS can be slow at times, but the people who work there certainly DO NOT deserve the ill treatment that this couple showed them. read more

This local post office is example of inefficiency and under staffing. Lines out the door and one person at the counter. There is never anyone available to assist, as its "lunch time, breakfast time, Christmas time" - you get the drift. That, combined with an abrasive postmaster, makes for a generally frustrating experience. As if the USPS is not being hammered enough - at Mercer Island their indifference to customer care is enough to warrant the drive to Bellevue post office where the staff seem to be more with it and actually are helpful. Too many times I've had to stand in line while one staffer is helping non-English speaking folks with the complexities of a passport application, and there is no one else around to help the folks who are mailing items or buying stamps. My suggestion is to give it a miss and do it all online and as another reviewer says "just drop off quickly" and avoid the frustration of long lines and slow service. read more
