Went in for a money order. First time there. I had a short wait, service was kind and quick! I never blame the staff at USPS offices when I have a long wait. It's public knowledge that they are understaffed, underfunded, and there's a push to shut them down because you can buy stocks and make money off of them. It's a very said situation for all of our social programs aka, services that support the working and middle class. I am in my 80's and disabled. I've sent several packages overseas to a friend from this office and others nearby recently and each time the person behind the plexiglass has filled out the customs form for me as I cannot do it. This time the person "sweetly" refused saying she wasn't allow to do it (she had done it before) and sent me hobbling away. This post office looks like a tornado went through it. Supplies (like free priority boxes and tags) are often missing in the displays and people leave lots of stuff on the tables and such. There is hardly more than one employee actually working the counter. Usually there is a line and when you get up there, you have to push to get a better shipping price over the more expensive priority options. I've heard that there are self serve kiosks at some of the newer post offices. This branch could benefit from that. I will need to find a better post office to use until they upgrade this one, it's close but not convenient. read more

Going by the # of neg reviews, it def looks like there are some issues with the Post Offices in this area of the country. Oye vay. I have spent hours trying to report a mis-delivered, missing priority mail package I sent on 2/5 that should have been received by 2/8 at the very latest, but had yet to be found. The system to file a "missing mail" claim is futile. I hope my company has better luck tracking it down, because I dread having to file a lost item insurance claim. read more

I had a very heavy item (60 lbs+) from Amazon and was delivered by local US postal services (according to tracking records) says "package transferred to local postal carrier for final delivery", the gentleman who delivered this package was not one of our regular mailman, he's name is Vinson (hope I got it correct). I had a very unpleasant experience with a clerk on the counter who treated customers differently. Not only the facial expressions but skip the line order. When I asked for an explanation, she requested me to another line, asked another clerk to help me, which means I had to wait again in the queue. The manager was involved, but no fair solution. Been a USPS PO Box holder for 9 plus years. I don't understand what is going on with USPS El Cerrito. I had a package from eBay. The package showed delivered on May 11th. I go to the PO Box and they said it wasn't there. I check again online and now it shows delivered May `14th. Still not delivered. I asked if I will have to file a package loss claim. This is the main El Cerrito post office. I've used it over the years and like that there's a parking lot right next door, shared w/ Wienerschnitzel. The Fairmount post office doesn't have its own lot. This morning I stopped here to mail a package to Sedona Springs, the downstairs safe key that Alan absentmindedly pocketed. Celia helped me and was very sweet and efficient. I was in and out in no time. Often there are lines, but today there wasn't one. The sales associate who assisted me was very nice and friendly and she and I had a small laugh with one another. I was in the area and it was quite convenient and within walking distance. Yes, it's true this location is almost always busy. Most of the time there are only 1-2 clerks available. But having worked at a public service desk myself, the service desk only constitutes 50% or so of your work duties--there are many behind the scenes duties that are assigned to you. If it is too busy then I either come back another time or sit on my cane chair and read a book till it's my turn. The clerks are patient and friendly in spite of the rudeness of some of the customers. I go here at least once or twice a week (especially since I joined paperbackswap.com). They have a parking lot which is often full and crazy with hell-bent drivers. I try to park on the street. I have no complaints, especially after the poor service from several other local post offices. read more

After having called USPS and getting a case number, no one called back. I called today just because I, once again, knew I had mail and it wasn't in my box. When a man behind me in line at the package pick up window and I knocked very hard on the door several times (the bell buzzer never works), a rude clerk answered the door, I gave her my box number and she leaned back, half heartily called out, "I need help, there's three people in line" Then she proceeded to help the man BEHIND me. Passed me right up! I asked her about it and she said, "You heard me call for my supervisor, I'm only one person" But I'm the first customer in line! "I have my instructions". What the F does that mean? She waited on everyone behind me and some who were asking questions from the lobby....no supervisor to be had evidently and all those other people were just the right number she could handle? Sorry this might sound a little jumbled, but I'm seeing red! I'm so willing to go somewhere else. What I have done is call USPS back. Gave them my case number and told them I wanted to discuss the matter. My case has been closed and resolved. HOW did that happen? Mysteries abound here! DON'T get a box or do business here. The Good: Mailmen (including ours) work out of this postoffice and develop a loyalty to their residential customers. Although we are one of the last houses on the route, generally our postal people are cheerful, informative and efficient. (I would, however, prefer to get my mail earlier in the day, but hey...home delivery is a pretty fine perk in this day and age. ) The post office itself has fairly long lines, but generally bearable. (I don't think the lines are any longer than they are at Albany o, for that matter the big modern office at Walnut Creek. I avoid coming in during holiday seasons or tax time. The Bad: Sometimes it is just amazing how difficult it is to mail a package. What should be a simple transaction can take quite a while, depending on the clerk. My worst nightmare with this post office involved sending packages from my sister's estate back to another sister in Kentucky. Each trip, each box had its own story. Packaging at this end was consistent, but the condition of the packages at the other end...apples, oranges and everything in between. The other odd event that happened was when I ordered "free" boxes. SOmehow, it became the sorcerer's apprentice with thousands of boxes showing up unbidden at my home...by the time we were able to stop the flow of boxes (wait, wait, we don't need more!) half of a double garage was full of the things. Odd....nobody at this Post Office seemed to know how it had happened, or what to do about it. The Ugly: The building. Nobody is going to try to preserve this place on the National Register of Historic Places. Trust me. It does, however, blend nicely with the bright yellow food "chalet" next door. Easy to find the Post Office when going down San Pablo Ave. You just have to scan the horizon for yellow... Summation: A point for the parking lot. Few urban post offices have parking lots. This one does...thus giving it an extra star for convenience. Total: Should be three and a half stars. But I like my mail delivery guys...so I'll round up. Four stars...which IMHO is terribly generous for a semi-governmental operation. To USPS management: KEEP THOSE USPS WORKERS HAPPY! They are basically all you've got between Two Stars and Four Stars. (And privatization, which will mean top heavy management will be on the road and looking for another job.) HEED MY WORDS! read more

It's a post office so we all know how humdrum that can be. Lines. Lackadaisical service with or without a smile. I don't have anything extraordinary to report. This place is super close to my house so when the lines are long I just go back home and come back later or the next day. Whichever suits my fancy. It does suck for people that come here when the lines are long if they don't live close by because due to it being a very small office they never have more than two people working (well not that I've ever seen) but usually it's only one. I won't add to the list of complaints about the poor, slow and awkward customer service that you receive when you go here, but I will comment on the fact that they can't even deliver from their own back door to your PO box at this location without losing sh*t. If you have your pharmacy mail order delivered here, forgot it. Either someone working here has an addiction they need to feed or they're making some extra money on the side by selling what they find, because 75% of my orders never make it to my PO Box and they have tracking numbers to say they were delivered and accepted by this office. If I have packages delivered to my house, they're stolen and if I have them delivered to my PO Box, they also disappear. USPS needs to be taken over like a failing high school. So far this is the worst post office location that I've been to. Why? I was there one time, there was a line of 6 people. There were 2 clerks serving. Then one of them closed the window and did not come back the whole time that I was there. I think she was taking her break. I have seen other times the line is so long. And the most I have seen are just 2 clerks working. May be they have a staffing issue. Better avoid this place if you are short on time! read more

The service is fast the employees are always helpful and attentive...I come a lot to mail my sons care packages he's in college at Long Beach State and I'm always in and out...the only time I got caught up and had to wait awhile was during their peak season the holidays but hey that's to be expected!! read more

The El Cerrito Post office delivered a package for me, which fit in my mail slot (a custom made waistcoat from the UK.) I had paid for expedited air shipping so I could have it for a party. The opted not to leave it and instead left a card. I filled out the card and asked for redelivery. I also had a package come from Amazon around the same time. The decided that the Amazon delivery was what the card was for, and they promptly lost the freaking vest. Now I can not get it back, I've been into the post office to try to locate it, and they can't find it at all. The clerk I last talked to told me that they sent it back to the UK, so "not to worry." I'm trying to arrange getting money back now via Paypal dispute, but what I want is the damn vest I ordered. Screw you El Cerrito post office, this is just one of many issues I have had since moving here from SF. How does a big city post office keep it together, but a small town post office fall apart when required to do the most basic of tasks? read more

This review may be more appropriate for the Oakland (Montclair) location... I sent from here overnight priority express mail (guaranteed overnight) without checking off "signature required" box--- whoever was delivering it in Oakland was careless and assumed that signature was required, for this reason, my package was not received until 3 days later, close to end of business hours. This is not okay! Now my accountant won't be able to submit my taxes on time. I will most certainly incur penalty for submitting late, since I likely owe some money. This is a completely preventable error and needs to be fixed. I thought USPS was more reliable and competent than UPS but now I'm really disappointed. I specifically asked, when I mailed, that they would leave my package at the mail box. To this end, I was told all that was needed is NOT to check "signature required." They will refund me for shipping but for that I had to have my receipt. Thank god I kept it Anyways, this sucks!!! read more

It's too small, there are never enough people to help, the people who are there are rude 75% of the time, the customers who go there are always cranky, they don't have the supplies you need half the time, and i'm sure i'm forgetting 5-10 other things. This place is complete and utter crap. I usually dont come to this location but I decided to drop a package off here because I was in the area. I had something that was less than 13 oz, but I prefer to drop it off to a person. I walled in at about 11:45AM on a Saturday. The door was open but I waited for maybe 5 minutes and NO ONE WAS THERE. i tried yelling and still no response. I decided to just drop it in the mail box. It has been 2 business days and my package hasn't even been scanned in yet. The item that was in that package was worth maybe $60. I want to report this location. Worst customer service ever! Specially the Asian man which I don't know his name. I have a PO Box here and I will not be renew it once my contract is done. Several packages delivery to my PO BOX HAVE GONE MISSING. Yes, missing. I have tracking number and proof of delivery and still the post office can of locate my packages. I am done! This post office does exactly what it needs to do. I feel like the majority of the people who visit this post office have no idea how to mail anything. Most of the times, the people holding up the line are asking the clerks the most inane questions regarding how to fill out their envelopes "where do I write the zip code?" One man asked. You can't blame the employees because you don't know how to address an envelope. I've always had great customer service from this tiny post office. I'd never been to this post office before and mistakenly parked about a block away. Consequently when I arrived at 12:01pm on a Saturday the door labeled "enter" was locked. I could see people working and waiting inside and noticed that there was another door that was ajar and so i walked in. Turns out I entered though what was the "exit" only door. I was in such a state from running a block in the rain that I didn't notice or think much of it. As I walked in, one employee (the manager) said, "We're closed." Soaking wet and smiling, I replied, "I just need to pick up a package, can you give me a break?" thinking, "I'm sure they aren't prepared to deny me service." Well I was wrong. Her response was to repeat, "I said, 'We're closed.'" I said, "I understand." and decided that once everyone was taken care of, I'd hang around to discuss what the big deal was about me walking in literally one minute after the end of their business day. When it came to be my turn, one of the employees who was no longer on the clock told me matter of factly that if her manager (who was still serving a customer) said that they were closed, that means she cannot help me. She also added that they, "turn away customers all the time." as though that was going to make me feel less like a piece of garbage that blew in off the street. As I waited for her boss to finish with her customer, I heard myself say something to the effect of, "Well, I'm a taxpayer and this is unreasonable." and thought, "Yep, that sounds like what an angry old man would say right now." It was at this point that the 3rd, unoccupied employee, who was a little older and empowered to act independently, said, "Sir, I can help you." She made sure to emphasize that she didn't have to help me because they are in fact, closed. I think I must have been pretty full of adrenaline at this point because I almost shouted, "Yeah, I get that!" She became a little amused at the absurd level of frustration that I'd managed to reach in the 3 or so minutes that had now passed. I almost started laughing about it too but thought, "No. There is some kind of message I'm trying to communicate here..." After I'd been helped, I decided not to press the issue with her boss, who I'm sure would have just walked away as I was ranting about how this whole situation is an indicator of how America has lost its way or some such self righteous nonsense. After only two visits to this office, I have received, on average, very good service. One time was excellent even with a lot of questions and confusion on my side about shipping overseas. The other time was good service, although the person helping me seemed a bit grumpy at first, but eventually warmed up after seeing my smile. In both cases I arrived at time when it was not very crowded, less than a 2 minute wait. The office looks junky, disheveled, with dim lights. With a interior style upgrade and some plants/flowers, it would feel better in there and that might improve everyone's mood. This really applies to most USPS offices. $1,000 would go a long way. read more
