US Post Office - Post Offices Near Me - El Cerrito, California

As far as Post Offices go, this one gets the job done. However I do have to mimic most of the other reviews and agree that all the workers seem to be a bit crabby and don't seem particularly happy with their jobs. I can understand why with all that has gone on the past year, but reading older reviews, it seems this is not something new. This is an older location located inside a historic building, and subsequently is rather small and cramped inside. This is further exacerbated by COVID, so basically only two people can wait inside before the line has to snake outside. I've only recently moved into this area so I can't say if the front glass barrier was put up due to COVID or has been there before, but the design is incredibly awkward as there is only one big opening in the center. So if you have any packages, you have to funnel them through there. Hours also aren't exactly correct as I walked in a bit past 4pm one day, and they were already getting ready to close the door behind me and deny entry to any further traffic. read more

This should be my go to spot to send my mail and get my stamps, but I was able to come in, get my money order, send my letter and go on my way. I like this better than the USPS on San Pablo, in El Cerrito, where I had a PO Box. Their lines are too long. The problem that I have is that one time they closed early, to work at the above mentioned post office. That was strange. They closed a post office, because another one was short staffed! The good thing is that the guy in front of me didn't "want to leave a sistah stranded," his words. So, I was able to mail my package before they closed, but still. That memory was traumatizing. But when I come in, they have stamps, no line, and while I couldn't get my first choice of stamp, August Wilson, I did get service from a couple of very nice people. Everything can improve. Both ladies working there are no help. Rude & not willing to help whatsoever. They don't take pride in their job & look like they just don't want to be there. I am sure that the employees steal here. Today my makeup subscription arrived. It was two bubble envelopes rubberbanded together (something that was done at the local post office since, according to tracking, they arrived at different times). One package was totally empty with about $50.00 worth of makeup stolen. The other package had just one item in it and the worker left that one item in the second bag. I am writing this because I am pissed and I have another package scheduled to go through that post office in about a week. I want awareness brought to this. It is too late to call the post office branch now, but I will be calling first thing in the morning. If it arrived at the post office empty I imagine they would note it as to not be blamed for it. The employees at this post office have zero social skills and are not simply nice. They get the job done but in a rude demeanor, especially the middle age Asian/Hispanic lady with light brown hair and blonde highlights. This post office leaves packages in the public area of the apartment complex instead of putting them inside the outer doors or at least outside the doors. Many homeless people walk through there but they don't care. read more

Avoid this post office if at all possible. The employees are unfailingly rude and impatient, especially when one is shouting a question and you can't understand them because the other one is already shouting at top volume. I had a while to stand and wait today (while trying not to inhale) and I observed that the employees are EXTRA chatty and helpful with some folks (not everyone, just some) and it occurred to me that it's their passive-aggressive way of increasing the torture inflicted on everyone else still waiting their place in line. If that's not bad enough, it's shabby and depressing and definitely a COVID health hazard. read more

There is a clerk here who is so hostile that...well, if looks could kill, the floor of this little post office would be so littered with bodies that there wouldn't be room to walk. I have been a service worker and have a lot of sympathy with people who work a counter, and always make an effort to be pleasant and friendly. One of the workers kept waving people in and asking them to wait inside, rather than outside, even though Covid is raging, and even though the weather was fine outside. I cannot understand this. The second was the one who helped me. It was very hard to hear her. She insisted that the safest way to send something was first class mail. I, too, was subjected to the post-apocalyptic environment that is "Saturday morning hours." Looking to buy a book of stamps, I walked in the door, only to be greeted by dim lighting and the whisperings of the dead. I understand that the door needs to be unlocked in order to access the P.O. boxes, but it seems as if the employees that work there went out of their way to make the atmosphere as creepy as possible. Wait - what was that shuffling sound? I turned around beneath a flickering light to see scattered flyers twisting in the wind from outside. Another patron had entered - with trepidation - and after some generic small talk, slowly backed out of the building with his parcel. Before exiting in the same fashion, I hopelessly decided to try the buzzer by the door in the back. Who would I be summoning? I listened to the reverberation of the buzzer emanating from the rear of the building and imagined what horror may have occurred within these walls - experimental surgery, hostage exchanges, incarceration of the damned. As I exited the door, I expected the building to disappear amongst a moving wall of bricks or bones of dead prisoners, retracting, slinking back into nothingness. I knew other El Cerrito residents would soon respond to my weekend trip to the post office with, "There hasn't been a post office there for years!" Worst customer service ever. The white lady who helped me was talking to her colleague while helping me and can't tell if she is talking me or her colleague. She spoke to me and her Asian colleague like we were kids. She is rude and not helpful. The other US post office on Solano is much better. read more

So incredibly sad to give this review. I showed up 1 minute before closing time and the door was already locked. I just had two small boxes to drop off. Labels already purchased and affixed to the boxes. I got a rude shaking of the head by the woman inside and even when they opened the door to let someone out, she refused to take the small boxes from me. I don't understand why the USPS is asking for such a huge bail out and some employees are so unwilling to be of service to the public they work for. It wasn't even closing time. So sad. read more

The 2 main clerks here are friendly, but they can get bitchy. While I may look like a regular, I was treated like a regular who ought to know better. I have never added stamps to my packages before; I usually have them weigh the package and then I pay for the postage. But because we were moving, we unearthed lots of old stamps of various amounts. I decided to use them on a box. I really thought that they would have a calculator there to add up the amount and then they can tell me the balance. I was wrong. Instead, I got yelled at by one of the women. "Next time, tell me how much the stamps are!" I was too shocked at this outburst that all I could do was thank her for telling me. She immediately toned down her attitude. I added up the amounts in my head, which happened to match up with her mental calculation. I left wishing I had already moved away from this area. I came in one more time afterwards. This time, I was helped by the other woman. I was mailing books and this other woman made me write "books" on the box. I didn't mind, but I had to bite my tongue from yelling at how inconsistent their practices were. The other woman never had me write that. In fact, I think she uses a media mail stamp. Why this other woman doesn't, I don't know. And I don't care. I'll be done with this post office that never had convenient hours when I was working. read more

The most horrible customer service. This one customer was polite but the post office lady (brown blond about 60?) was so rude and rough with her. I was afraid to get yelled at. Out of all the post offices I've been to, this one is my favorite. The one woman who always works here is super friendly, funny and helpful. One time when it wasn't busy we got to talking and she told me of great Mexican places to eat in Richmond. Every time I come here I get treated nice. Wow! I just had the worst experience this morning at the Fairmount branch post office. When I walked in there was no one in line and one clerk behind the glass, a short statured heavy set woman with grey hair and dark rimmed glasses. I went to the window and she seemed to be tidy-ing up stamp flats in a rack, was ignoring me, made no eye contact. She was aware I was there, i was in plain sight. Some people started to come in and stand in line behind me. The ignoring continued and we all stared for a bit, not wanting to be rude, until finally she said, without making eye contact with anyone, "are you ready", to which I replied I had been ready for awhile. Then things got worse. I needed two envelopes pre-posted for inclusion in one large envelope going to the court. She did not seem to get it at all. Then she had me going back and forth between windows a couple times, demanding "come over here"; finally I asked her to treat me with some dignity, to which I was met with a blank stare. I did not get her name as I just wanted to get away and out of there. I only hope my documents get to the court okay now. I have not seen this clerk there before and I hope I do not run into her again. I did notice the other clerk, a woman with reddish hair and glasses, who has always been pleasant and efficient. This is one of the best post offices that I've been to. I came with quite a few odd shaped packages and one of the women at the desk was patient with me as she explained my options and searched for me to get the cheapest options. She let me use post office tape and pens as well! Mid-way through our transaction a woman came in looking for a lost item and that customer service agent explained that she had given it to the city's lost and found at the police station after holding it for about a week. The woman with the lost item was passive aggressive but the customer service agent took it in stride. A seriously wonderful post office. read more

My goodness! I'm surprised at so many 1 star reviews of this post office. My experiences here haven't been that bad. There are frequently lines, but the clerks have been pleasant and helpful. This is one of the two post offices in El Cerrito, the smaller of the two, so it's the one I'm likely to go to if I don't go to the little one in Kensington. read more

Trust me, you don't want to try to mail something the day after the USPS raises postage rates. Postage rate increases seem especially important to the senior citizen crowd. Just wait a week. I'm a local, so I have no choice but to use this post office. I've been going there for about 4 years now, and I've been kind and patient and friendly. But every single time I go in here I get treated like crap, and so does everyone else. The woman that works the counter most of the time is incredibly rude and unhelpful. She honestly seems like she really enjoys telling people "no." If people are confused or need help she's impatient and offers the least possible assistance. She's always cutting people off mid-sentence because she assumes she knows what they're going to ask, and I've seen people have to struggle through completing a sentence as she cuts them off repeatedly just to finally make it clear that no, they are NOT asking what she thought they were. Frankly, if you enjoy your job THIS little, it's time to consider a new profession. read more

If this post office wasn't by far the closest, I would never, ever go here. The employees are as slow as they could be (and possibly slower), the lines are almost always out the door and the ambiance is 100 percent high school cafeteria/DMV. Really good service overall during my two years visiting El Cerrito USPS on Fairmount Ave. For example: The last two days the service was exceptional and the wait times were minimal - they processed a lot of people quickly. I needed to send an envelope with business papers to Slovakia. (I went to UPS first and they didn't know that Slovakia was a country, then thought it was in the UK, then said my address was wrong and they couldn't find it.) At USPS they were very patient with me, knew that Slovakia is a foreign country in Europe, and guided me through the customs forms and help me get the package ready. All while being very nice and patient. I believe it was Laticia (sp?) who helped me on that exact occassion. When I first visited this office I was greeted by a slow, rude person, whose attitude epitomized "government worker". Since then, the staff has been good to great. Thumbs up El Cerrito USPS!!! As I noted in another USPS review, they need an interior decorator and $1,000 to spruce up this dreary place. With some color, plants, better lighting, and some organization, this place would have a more lively and happy feeling that would make customers feel good about being there, would probably boost employee moral, which in turn would improve the entire experience. read more

I live in the El Cerrito Plaza area. Having the day off from work, I went to check mail in my building after not accessing it for a few days. I happened to get to the box during the time when the postman (woman) arrived. I was ready to say hello and thank her for her work. But before you know it, she was making some rude comments right in my face. She could have shown some manners and explained she needed extra time so I should come back later. But of course, she chose to be unprofessional and disrespectful in her behavior. She only had no more than a dozen pieces of mail on her hand to slot. How long does that take? Talk about terrible customer service. Then I saw her knocked on another tenant's door and started yelling at that tenant for something else. I am totally disgusted. She was probably drunk or on something while on the job. Unbelievable. Not sure if they even care about complaints but thought I'd share my frustrations anyway. read more

I have a fear of going to post offices because of the terrible and mean service at the post office on Durant near the Cal campus. However, the ladies that helped me today at the Fairmount post office have given me new hope that post office workers can be helpful and even pleasant!
