Minus one star for customer service. Last time I went in, I needed a money order. I got the money order quick enough, and without issue, but since it was raining, I asked for an envelope to protect the money order slip. The cashier told me she didn't have any envelopes. How is it that a *post office* doesn't have an envelope? The post office processes plenty of small and important documents that people store in envelopes, so I can't imagine that my request is that unusual.

I arrived at 7:30 AM to closed doors, which was bad enough, but by 8:00 AM, they still hadn't opened. Their excuse? 'Understaffing.' Yet, there was absolutely zero notification of this on their official website. This is a staggering level of incompetence. It's not even a question of good or bad customer service--there was literally no one there to provide it. Nearly 20 people were trapped waiting inside, all of them in a massive rush because they needed to mail their items before clocking into work. This chaotic mess is a direct result of USPS's systemic mismanagement. It is acceptable to face staffing shortages, but it is completely unacceptable to fail to update your official hours online. You mislead the public into believing you open at 6:00 AM, post a note on the wall saying 8:00 AM, and then fail to honor even that time due to a 'lack of personnel.' This is utterly ridiculous and disrespectful of people's time. Zero stars."

The lines move quickly (there are 4 windows) and the staff is attentive and helpful. They also have a wide variety of tape, envelops and stamp options. In picking my holiday stamps this year, I had a choice between snowglobes, snowflakes, a Christmas tree variety and a mother/baby jesus. Snowflakes are new this year so I got some of those, some Christmas and then a baby animals set (not holiday themed in case I have some left over). I also bought 10 international forever stamps which had a poinsettia design. Shipping via the USPS is loads cheaper than FedEx…read more I was trying to ship a pie cross country and the quote at FedEx for overnight was outrageous. No wonder I prefer to send money or to buy online with free shipping! Need a box? It would be $5.99 or more, depending on size. Overnight to Cali would be nearly $190 for 8lbs. Even the cheaper options were pretty pricey, and it was pie, so I couldn't go with the cheapest next week delivery option. I was about to give up, then I remembered that the USPS did offer some quickish delivery options and ran over before their door locked at 6pm. Good news - if you make it in, they will take care of you. Relief! The two pies didn't fit into their large priority box with 2-3 day delivery. Given the risk to the pie quality, I ended up shipping one pie in a medium flat rate box (11-7/8x3-3/8x13-5/8 inch) for $13.65 (one rate, any weight! box included, and with a tracking #), which would have cost $56.99 for 2 day ship at FedEx (about 4 lb, and the price doesn't include a box). The other pie? I'll probably eat it. PS - the pie arrived still cold to the touch - yay!

Five stars for a Post Office?…read more Yes. Do they mess things up? Sure. Are they highly efficient for what they do? Absolutely. Most of my experiences in Post Offices involve huge lines and dawdling employees. The folks here seem to actually want to get through the line quickly. Whenever I come to ship something out they're helpful, friendly, and if treated with respect give it back in return. (Though I'd imagine they wouldn't hesitate to put the smack down if you step up. This is East Cambridge after all) The hours are a bit wonky but they open early enough (7:30) that I have plenty of time to stop in before work to pick up packages/stamps/whatever. In this neighborhood I think USPS is the best shipping option. Apparently in a past life East Cambridge was a bit shady so UPS/FEDEX refuse to leave packages at the door. This means a trip out to Somerville ($45 cab ride) or several days in rerouting (UPS sends it through Rhode Island, natch) to get your package. But the Post Office will hold it for you in the convenient office. Works for me! Sadly it seems like the Postal Service is slowly dying. Almost always, it's an unpleasant experience for everyone. While it's clear that most employees dislike their jobs (and perhaps rightfully so), I do my best to make their day as easy and pleasant as possible. Typically, they offer the same in return. Except for the female staff member who yells and berates people. She's consistently unpleasant. Yet, she's only been overtly aggressive towards me once. (This is a strong record, since I see her verbally abuse people almost every time I enter the Post Office while she's working, which is multiple times per week.) Today, she took it to a new level. As usual, I handed her my pre-stamped package that she only needs to scan. And, as usual, she asked me what was inside. (The answer is always either clothes or books.) We've repeated this ritual for months. Today, however, she took a turn. Me: "It's a coat." Her: "I don't believe you. The box says fragile." Me: "It's a reused box." Her: "Tell the truth!" Then, she proceeded to violently shake the box. Her: "I can hear something. Stop lying to me." Me: "It's a coat. It's not fragile. Feel free to shake it." Her: "Stop lying." Me: "Go ahead an open it." It... was a coat. When I asked her why she thought I was lying, she said something to the effect of "My manager tells me to ask everyone." And, I know that's not true. Last week--when her manager was at the desk because the customer in front of me complained--she was treated me kindly for the first time ever. ___ I understand that the Postal Service is a serious job with real regulations and legal implications. It's also... a service. If a few employees at this location decided to be less miserable, I think it could go a long, long way--and make customers nicer, too. I wish them luck. (And its customers, too.)
