I really like this restaurant, but then again, I really like Peruvian food as a whole. I've only come by here twice, but I've greatly enjoyed my meal both times that I've been here. The restaurant was busy both times I had gone, so I can imagine that there will be a wait during peak dining hours. I've gotten their tallarian verde twice and I've tried some of their sides, which were all pretty tasty. They offer all the standard Peruvian dishes, like arroz chaufas, lomo saltado, and choclo, so it's nothing that you've not seen out of the ordinary, but they do it well and their portions are pretty sizable. I love their chica morada, and will usually get a pitcher of it, too. The friends I've come here with have all enjoyed their meals as well, so that's another plus in my book. We decided to branch out in the neighborhood and try Urubamba (we were here years ago but really don't remember it). I was impressed with how busy it was, always a good sign. However, there were a couple of major issues: 1) we sat for 20 minutes before waiter came to our table to ask our order, hadn't even brought us water; 2) there was a child at a table playing or watching a video at FULL volume and I was appalled that the restaurant was allowing this. Dinner was not looking promising. Fortunately, a waiter finally showed up, he was quite pleasant, and was prompt in returning with water and wine glasses. Our food also came out in a reasonable amount of time. We also realized they seemed to be short staffed; not acceptable but realized the wait for service was likely no the norm. We enjoyed our meal of tiriditos (unique citrus sauce), chicken tamale, parihuela, and sauteed shrimp with onions and tomatoes. The shrimp dish could do without both white rice and french fries, a bit overkill. Note that the restaurant does not sell alcohol, but there is a nice wine store 2 blocks away, and the corkage fee is a nominal $5. Out of all the Peruvian restaurants I have been to this has been the worst I have ever been. I don't mind the price if the food is good but the most basic plate like lomo saltado is not even from the correct cut of meat. We also ordered tallarín verde which was very bland. You could not taste the Basil which is one of the main ingredients of the dish. My girlfriend who is South American had to add salt in order to give it some flavor. At the end when we asked for the bill, they told use that they do not take visa or debit. They only take MasterCard and Amex and they add on a 15% tip automatically. Ok..as you know I'll always give you and honest review. This Peruvian restaurant is one of the best in Queens (Jackson Heights) area. They serve breakfast, brunch, and dinner. Breakfast is definitely one of my favorite meals to eat at this restaurant. Their traditional Peruvian breakfast plates include lomito which is a smaller plate of lomo saltado without the fries but soooo delicious. They also make some top notch tamales. All breakfast plates come with coffee and warm bread to accompany your meal. They also make a sampler plate that has chicaron, Peruvian eggs, sweet potato (Camote) and yuca frita which is absolutely amazing. Their brunch/lunch platters aren't different from their dinner plates. Just depends on the time your arrive there.They always have a daily special which on the right day can be to die for when searching for a unique dish to eat. Their lomo saltado is great but be sure to add some tacu tacu with it: its the perfect mix. I can definitely keep going with the different variety of entrees they have just take my word for it and go experience it for yourself: you won't be disappointed. Having grown up with a peruvian mom I really missed traditional food. The few times I've gone, though, there has always been a line of around 20 minutes, and since it's a pretty small space there's nowhere to wait comfortably. We'll, of course, be back. read more

I opened the door and felt as if I had walked into a far away land, completely unknown to me and other New Yorkers. One that could cause immense fascination, purely from a sociological perspective: Des Moines, Iowa. Yes, I felt I had walked into Des Moines. Why? I was stopped at the entrance by the waiter who told me that they had stopped seating for the night. I glanced at my watch, and it read 9:27 pm. When I protested, he responded that they could allow take-out, but no seating! I was flabbergasted as to whether I was still in the city that never sleeps or some strange, unknown land. It took all my will power to not rain body blows on the guy for shattering my assumptions of New York.... and for causing me to travel all the way from Manhattan for nothing! I HAVE to yelp this place, I thought and so Macarthur like told the guy, I shall return. Just as well that I did. In a summer of trying various Latin American cuisines, I've finally found one that has captured my heart: Peruvian. Even though, I laughed while reading the hyberbole on their website, I could only nod in agreement as I ate their food. Soooo much more than Rotisserie chicken alone! Any cuisine that prominently features lime, onions, cilantro, and dares to be spicy is all right with me. Peruvian scores well on all these, and Urubamba does a more than competent job of representing the cuisine. The Ceviche mixto (fish, calamari, octopus, and shrimp) was amongst the best I've had, as the server asked for and delivered on the spice level. The interplay with Peruvian corn, fried corn, and sweet potato was absolutely brilliant (5 stars). Also tasteful was my entrée of stir fried shrimp with onions and tomatoes. I drowned these two in the accompaniment of the traditional Peruvian drinks Chicha Morada (juice made from purple corn, pineapple, and lime) and Chicha de Jora (the Incan beverage made with Peruvian corn and barley). The service fully redeemed itself in my next visit, as I chose to listen to the server's recommendations for a change - and this one was very thoughtful. First up were the Anticuchos (two grilled skewers of veal heart with Peruvian corn and potato) and remembering that I could handle heat, he brought the spicy sauce with it (another 5 stars). For my entrée I had the Tallarines Verde (pasta mixed in a basil, spinach, and cheese based sauce) with grilled chicken. Very flavorful, and with so much quantity that I couldn't finish the pasta - I did finish the chicken, as all Asian kids have been ingrained to "eat the high value food item first" by our parents! :) Given his quality recommendations, I went with his recommendation to try the Alfajore for dessert. This is essentially a crumbly butter sandwich cookie filled with gooey dulce de leche and dusted with powdered sugar. While I still think that no one does Dulce de Leche better than the Argentinians (no idea why, but consistently my experience) the texture of the cookie was great and could be eaten with a spoon. The waiter was considerate enough to bring me a glass of water to drink with it, saying that it is very rich and will be difficult to finish - but that is all that he got wrong the whole evening. My friends and I have been here 2 more times since the first visit a few months ago. Almost everything we order continues to satisfy bellies and garner delight. We ordered the beef stew with cilantro this time which was like comfort food from the Peruvian mother I never had. It may lean slightly on the salty side for some, but is perfect to eat with rice. The roast chicken was amazing! Hands down, better than Pio Pio in terms of tenderness and taste! (though the green sauce is not as tasty/spicy as Pio's). Ask for their hot sauce which lends a spicy, garlicky kick. Someone finally ordered rice and beans as a side, and Urubamba does not play around. The beans were so rich and flavorful, one could make an entire meal with just the rice and beans. The alfajores dessert is probably my favorite. This confection bears two discs with flaky crust dusted with powdered sugar sandwiching a slightly sweet jam. Goes great with the Cafe con Leche. The Leche Asada and Flan were not the best as the custard portions were dry. We ordered a tonnage with food leftover for next day's lunch due to the generous portions. Service is still 'whatever' depending on the day but it doesn't deter me from having my Peruvian fix. read more

First time of eating Peruvian food so can't comment on how it compares with other Peruvian places. The best part of this meal was the red kola hadn't had that before though spotted an oddity on the label that the front say 355ml but the serving size nutritional information says 354ml, perhaps 1ml evaporates somewhere? Onto the food, fish soup starter recommended by my friend but I found it a little too spicy and he said it was better last time. Friend had the beef stew but it looked like four pieces of beef sat on rice, so more like a rice and curry then a stew one would expect in a bowl. I had the lamb stew that again came on a bed of rice but this was swimming in so much fat that the rice was saturated so didn't look appealing. Am not sure if Peruvian stew is served like this or if they used a particularly poor cheap cut of lamb that caused the whole dish to take on a funny fatty aroma. The food, on it's own: THREE STARS This review is about the overall restaurant. I ordered the Papa Rellena Con Arroz. The description read "crispy mashed potato stuffed with meat served with rice -- $9.75." When the entree arrived, there was no rice with it. I asked the waiter about this and he said, "Well this does come with rice but it's also on the appetizer menu without the rice. Did you want it as an appetizer or should I bring out the rice." I had not read through the appetizers and so I had no way of verifying this but took his word for it and said that's fine. The portion was decent without the rice and I figured it would be cheaper this way. The waiter asked if we wanted hot sauce and I said yes. We were halfway through our meal when I had to flag him back and ask about the hot sauce. "Oh I forgot." he said and then finally brought it out. When the bill arrived, my item was still charged at $9.75. I didn't say anything and just paid it making up my mind never to return. When a customer orders Papa Rellena CON ARROZ, why is the wait staff not bringing out the rice and making the call on whether the customer should get the rice or not? And why is the wait staff lying about it being on the appetizer menu when it is not? All this might explain why the neighboring restaurants were packed and this one was so empty when we went. If you're contemplating walking into this restaurant, do yourself a favor -- walk a block down where you'll find other restaurants serving similar fare that are better priced and have better service. read more

Parking is not to hard to find in these parts. I came here one Sunday afternoon and it was already packed. This is always a great sign of good things to come. This place is BYOB and I didn't bring anything. Shame on me. Well since I never been here before, I let my brother and and his wife do all the ordering. You're probably thinking, who's this asian kid saying this is legit? I grew up in Miami, I eat this for breakfast. Boom. Instant cred. I always want to try this place because I love Peruvian food and because this place looks nice and cozy to take a date for dinner, but we both had a not pleasant experience: 1: terrible service. Our waitress was in a big hurry for some reason to take our orders, after that we hardly saw her again. 2: We order two glasses of Suvignon blanc and she gave us some red wine, we didn't make a big deal about it because we like red too, so we took it. 3: I order a Pariguela: It's was nothing special about it, i had to add lime juice to give it some flavor to it, my advice for the chef and owner: add crab to that soup to make it more flavorful and authentic. 4: We paid the check and the waitres NEVER came back to the table to pick up the money. I had to get up and look for someone to take the money and and get some change back, the only one around was a very nice busser, he took care of everything and brought change back, I also show me where the restoom was located and he was very nice and attentive all the time, btw, him and the waitress should switch jobs positions. We never got a "thanks" or "goodnight" from anyone on our way out, and I don't go to places to get all kinds of attentions or be treated like some kind of celebrity, but, I like to leave place with a smile in my face and come back again because the food, the stuff and the service, unfortunately I didn't feel that on this place. 3 starts for the food 1 start for my "waitress" 5 starts for the busser (I wish I new his name) he rocks! read more

I have been to Urubamba about 12-15 times and every time I go I have been impressed. Usually it's for brunch. Yes, despite the claims that Jackson Heights has few decent breakfast/brunch spots they are out there, you just may have to stop looking for trendy and start looking for decent food at decent prices.....anyway I digress. The breakfast/brunch menu is great because of the reasonable prices and consistently good quality. (As a side note those of you who don't already know, Peruvian cuisine is one of the most diverse and traditionally respected cuisines in the world so get amongst it!) Having tried my first ever Lomito al Jugo (An Asian influenced beef dish) I've been on a quest to find one as good. No other Peruvian place has come close. Also recommend the Tacu Tacu con Bistec Encebollado (Delish rice dish with onions and steak), and fried fish. The most expensive brunch menu is $10 so get there and try one or three. The restaurant itself has really nice decor and I've seen some live music in there on occasion (usually a Sat morning) Go there and eat! read more

I met some friends here over the weekend. The service was great. The food? The seafood appetizer was tasty, but for entrees - I tasted only the Arroz con Pollo and the Pollo Guisada. Both were a bit too salty for our taste. The other menu items looked intriguing however. This spot is BYOB and they charged $5 for each corked bottle of wine. South American food doesn't get any better than this. As others have stated, this place merged with Inti Raymi not too long ago. The effect is a nicer decor with the same knee-buckling good food. Peruvians will tell you that this is THE spot for Peruvian food. Pio Pio, for example, is a joke compared to this place. And as someone who takes my rankings very seriously, I wholeheartedly give this place 5-stars. Sure, I've seen nicer places, and the service may not be impeccable. However, the service is attentive and friendly enough, the atmosphere is clean and decent-looking. Combine that with the fact that the food is so insanely tasty and well-priced that you will never leave this place unhappy. Indeed, the only thing you'll leave with is food, because the portions also happen to be huge. And the chica morada - good lord! It's the perfect accompaniment to the perfect meal. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this restaurant yet! It's at the end of my block and my go-to place for solid Peruvian food for the last almost 4 years. Their fish dishes are all amazing, as is their rice/bean dish (tacu tacu). I've tried a friend's roast chicken entree and that was also fantastic. The best part though is their hot sauce which is super spicy but also incredibly smoky and flavorful - I want to buy jars of it and take it home with me, it's so good. The decor is warm and inviting and cosy. Great place for a quiet dinner or for a larger party (I've had a 15 person birthday dinner here). The service is slow (but friendly) so go with some time on your hands. The prices are a bit high, but the portions are huge, and so you can easily split an entree with someone else, especially if you supplement with an appetizer. read more

There was only 3 of us, no large groups in the restaurant, and it was only 50% to 70% full in the time we were there. It seemed like they had 3 or 4 servers which is a lot. The time it took to wait for the server to collect our order after giving us menus, bring the food after we ordered, bring us the desert menu, serve desert, and even bring the check took a total of over 1 hour and 20 minutes. Our time deciding, eating the meal, and eating desert was about 40 minutes. We spent over 2 hours there! You would think the longest wait was for the food. It wasn't. I've been living in Jackson Heights for many years now, and it's only recently that I discovered this place. I was impressed by the decor but that was pretty much it. To be honest, I didn't enjoy the early dinner here during my first visit. A few things bothered me. 1. There was a table of some adults and young kids. The two kids were running up and down the aisle of the restaurant stumping and screaming. The adults didn't do much to stop this rampage. It was very annoying. 2. The waitress and the waiter didn't pay attention to customers at all. Many times our water glass was empty and we had to signal them to fill it, not once it was voluntarily filled. 3. The food took a LONG time to come out, and the restaurant was not busy at all. So it was a long wait. 4. The food was average, not bad bad, but not WOW. I really enjoy the seafood and ceviche dishes here. There's 4-5 types of ceviche to choose from (we usually go for the mixto, but there are different kinds) and there are ~6 types of sopa (soup) to choose from as well. The seafood paella was delish. The drinks are also really good too. The spices/flavoring in all their dishes come together quite well. Atmosphere/ambiance is extremely nice (great date/conversational/small group atmosphere), soft lighting, interesting decor. Only odd bit is the bathroom; to create a "separation" of the bathroom there are heavy thick clear plastic vinyl flaps... but other than that oddity, the entire experience was superb. The price/quality balance works out in your favor, trust me. A little higher and I would borderline say it's overpriced, but given the quality/nature of dish, this place is great. The first time we went here it was amazing, the food and service were a pleasant experience. So when in NY we decided why not, let's go again, this time we took friends and family; horrible mistake. From the moment we walked in we were greeted or rather not greeted by a disgruntled server who looked like he wanted to be anywhere but at work. We shrugged it off thinking he'll be more polite/civil by the time he's ready to take our order. Hah! so wrong, his attitude continued throughout our dining and when we needed something i.e. condiments, drinks, etc. he was nowhere to be seen and when we finally flagged him down ugh, it was as if we were intruding on his valuable time. Anyways, the food is good, the servers can definitely use some proper training and don't ask for the green sauce to go we asked and our server said "no, we don't do that" (angry face included). Perhaps they thought we would have made it at home then sold it on the streets of NY or become Green Sauce Distributors!!
