I like splashing my cash on clothes, shoes (don't you?), fragrances, makeup, sneaks, my kitchen…read moreand big ticket home items. For small home decor accessories like small end tables, benches and accent pieces, I go to Home Sense, HomeGoods, etc. Hell- I even go to thrifts stores to find "that" unique piece. But there's a difference between ridiculous and affordable. The first of the two, is where Safavieh is at. On Central Ave in Hartsdale, Safavieh has plenty to choose from to decorate your living room, family room and bedroom and they've been doing so for a long time. I recently found a Safavieh brand, small 2x4 rug for my galley kitchen at on online store but tried my luck here and see if they have that style so I can whisk it away. Only available rugs are large Persian area ones with the exception of just 2 small rugs in colors I wasn't going for. I mentioned to the folks here I was in the market for a specific small size and a particular color rug. While the service was professional, I honestly felt that because I didn't drain my bank account with any of their items, tone and body language changed towards the end and were way off. But to their benefit, rugs are quality and these folks have a lot of daring pieces. Even the items that have cracks or marks on them, were outrageously priced.

I gave up and popped into Hartsdale a week later where Melissa took up my case and what a difference! It was like working with 2 different organizations. Melissa was fabulous. I genuinely love this store and find myself coming back to it over and over again, both for my…read moredental practice and for my personal space. It has become a go to whenever I feel like something needs to be more efficient, more streamlined, or just better thought out. What makes it stand out is the experience of actually being in the store. Walking through the aisles sparks ideas in a way that online shopping never does. You start seeing possibilities you didn't even know you needed. A drawer divider becomes a system, a storage bin becomes a workflow solution. It's not just shopping, it's problem solving in real time. I use a lot of what I find here to improve organization at my office, and it has had a real impact on how smoothly things run day to day. There's something very satisfying about creating systems that reduce friction, and this place is full of tools that help you do exactly that. They consistently carry unique, well designed solutions that you won't easily find elsewhere. It feels curated for people who actually care about organization, not just basic storage. If you're someone who enjoys optimizing your space, whether at home or in a business, this store is incredibly inspiring. I would honestly describe myself as an organization enthusiast, and this is one of the few places that truly delivers on that level.

When it comes to hooking up my home with different lamps and lighting, I never play by the rules…read more I'll mix every style under the sun and end up with something to give a particular spot life. I was drawn to a Moroccan candle lamp we bought ages ago in the East Village- then had hubs' friend hook up a wire and light bulb. Because that wasn't a legit electrical job, it gave out- but we saved the Moroccan Lamp anyway for looks. Powell has always been our first line of defense for all things Lamps and knew we'd get a brand new and rewired Moroccan lamp. Located a few doors down from Apple Farm and SAKS Off 5th, the husband and wife team here- have always delivered exceptional lamp service. Plus there's so much lighting eye candy. Powell's process is a bit off I think- but somehow it works and they do come through. I visited 2 weeks ago and explained my issue to Fran and asked how much wire I needed, length, on/off switch placement, etc. She fills out order receipt with basic name and # info. Powell Accessories will not give you prices on the spot and even though I asked, she just couldn't give me a ballpark estimate. Lamps stay with them while they access the situation. And between the time I dropped off my lamp and the time we got a quote was 2 weeks. Although I love my Moroccan lamp, my fear was without a price quote sooner- I didn't want to be slapped with a $500 bill afterwards! Goes to show you I'm not the lamp expert and all we paid was just $48!

Avoid the Sur La Table Rustic Bread Cooking Class--Too Expensive with Very Little to Do…read more We attended the Rustic Bread course for my cousin's birthday at the White Plains store. At $90 per person, the course was ridiculously overpriced particularly since 4 of us shared the duties for making two loaves of bread. We had so little to do that one of us added salt, the other added oil, and the four of us alternated kneading one loaf at a time. I have attended other cooking classes in the past and typically, everyone gets to participate and be engaged during the class with tasks like cutting, cooking, and prepping the dishes. We have also always been given the opportunity to eat the meal we made in the process so the course is interactive, serves as a meal, and teaches new cooking/baking techniques. Unfortunately, we paid $360 for the four of us to stand around, share two small loaves of bread and some butter among the group. We did contact customer service about our concerns and while seeming attentive at first, they ultimately did nothing to address our concerns. I would advise that you look for a cooking class elsewhere that will most likely be far more affordable and hands-on with the option to enjoy the items you bake/cook in a fairer proportion where everyone is allowed, at the minimum, to make their own loaf.

I first caught sight of The Dark Horse sometime ago, strolling through some of Scarsdale's shops…read more It's a petit, all-in-one vintage shop, filled with a little bit of everything: if you need something for your garden, it's in there! Something funky for your living room? Totally. But if you do eye something, get it quick, otherwise, it'll be gone. Such is the case with an unusual desktop, sterling silver card holder that I wanted to purchase for Mr. Man, but I bypassed it and when I went back, it was gone. Service is nice and Sharon will gladly assist in almost anything that might interest you that day. Prices are clearly, comparable to its own Scarsdale location---lavish. No problem....every so often, The Dark Horse runs a store-wide sale and will not feel that huge dent in your wallet. Though I don't shop here on a regular, items, truly are rare, one-of-a kind. I pick a few funky and worldly, accent pieces to elevate my living room a bit and redecorate my college-age daughter's room, with items that I will not find anywhere else.

This is not a store for people looking for a bargain or something you might find at a tag sale, however, the gifts that you might purchase will be truly valued and appreciated by the lucky recipients.
