Matcha latte with black sesame foam // matcha latte with ube foam
    Lisa N.

My friend and I were around the area and wanted some matcha. I quickly looked up a spot on Yelp and found Urban Matcha. It was just a short distance walk from Yumee Katsu. As we approached the store, we noticed the line was out the door. Perhaps a good sign? The staff members there had their systems in placed. Very efficient and wait time wasn't that bad. The drinks were so worth it! One drink was close to $9 tho... but so good!! Matcha latte with black sesame foam - highly recommend!! I got mine with oat milk and light ice. I devoured my drink and was debating if I should have ordered another one.. hmm. I didn't know they have multiple locations! Wished there was one in the South Bay. Would recommend!! High quality matcha.

Such a yummy spot! We came here on a Sunday. Parking was a bit tough but we finally got a spot. The line was quite long but went by quick. We ended up waiting 20 minutes till we got to order. We ordered an ube matcha and a hojicha latte. Our drinks came out really quickly. Both were so delicious! The ube cream top was my favorite. The ube flavor was not too overpowering and perfectly paired with the matcha. The matcha definitely tastes high quality. We ended up sitting outside and getting a few snacks from Castro Marketplace. Will definitely be back to try other drinks!

Just went to Urban Matcha on Monday at 3pm. A lot of people, I guess, this is summer, and kids or teachers are off on summer time. 1) Modern decor 2) clean restaurant/drink place 3) restroom is super clean(very new) 4) Outside seating area has cute chair(sorry no photo for that). 5) Ordered regular matcha and matcha ice-cream cone. But taste very good. And I got my order pretty fast. Will be back soon.

Hojicha Float w/ matcha soft serve, lychee matcha, and Strawberry matcha (IG@ boba._.addict)

They are currently in on the soft opening! I've heard great things about Urban Matcha and had to try it out for myself. Hojicha Float with Matcha Soft Serve 9/10 Strawberry Matcha Latte 8.5/10 Matcha Lychee Jelly 6.5/10 Hojicha Matcha was refreshing. I love the dark-roasted nuttiness of hojicha, and it pairs amazingly with the matcha soft serve. Strawberry Matcha was good. I prefer getting no sweet since the strawberry foam is pretty sweet. I got less sweet but it was still a bit too sweet for me. Matcha Lychee was really refreshing. I recommend it for those who want something on the lighter side and don't taste too much matcha. I thought it was too sweet for me to ask for a couple of sips. I suggest getting less sweet.

Get the banana matcha!! When it comes to trying new coffee spots, I always go for the banana drinks, and it definitely hit the spot. The matcha here are vibrant green and creamy, I loved it!

Stopped by Urban Matcha on a Friday afternoon and there was a line, which is always a good sign. Even though it was busy, the service was fast and we got our order surprisingly quickly. Since it was a hot day, I ordered the soft serve with both the black sesame and matcha flavors so I could try each. I really enjoyed that both flavors were bold and authentic. The black sesame had a rich, nutty taste, while the matcha was pleasantly earthy. It actually tasted like black sesame and matcha instead of just vanilla soft serve with a hint of flavoring. If you're a matcha fan, this is definitely a place worth checking out.

Decided to stop by to see what the hype was all about since it was all over social media. Matchas are popping up all over the bay, and I'm all for it! We stopped by on a Sunday around 12:30pm and there was already a line that was going out the door. It moved rather quickly since there was an employee taking orders as we were in line. Clean and modern interior, which is always a good feeling when walking into a business. Ordered their matcha parfait and the matcha was earthy and the vanilla was smooth so combined well together. I wasn't a fan of their mochi balls because they were tasteless, but I did like the crunchiness of the corn flakes. The strawberry matcha latte had a strong strawberry flavor that was on the sweeter side and overpowered the matcha a bit. The drink was also watered down. A bit disappointed with our orders given that this spot was overhyped.

    Christine R.

I had some time to kill before meeting up with a friend for lunch, so I decided to stop by and see what all the hype was about. I drove by around 10:30 a.m. and there wasn't anyone in line yet, so I parked and waited in my car for about 15 minutes. The people parked next to me mentioned they were going to get in line, so I figured it was probably time. I got in line around 10:50, and by the time they opened at 11:00, it took about 20 minutes before I was able to place my order. Once I ordered, my drink was ready in about 3 minutes, which was impressively fast considering the crowd. I ordered the regular Matcha Latte with the Ube Cheese Topper. The drink was really good, and the ube topper was definitely my favorite part. The matcha itself was smooth and flavorful, but honestly... was it worth all the hype and the wait? For me, not really. It was a good matcha latte, but I didn't find it to be anything especially unique or different from other great matcha spots I've been to. I do want to go back and try their Ube Soft Serve, but I'm not sure I want to wait in that line again. One thing that really stood out was the staff. Every employee I interacted with was friendly, smiling, and kept a positive attitude despite the steady line of customers. They all worked efficiently as a team, and no one looked stressed or overwhelmed. I did visit right when they opened, so I'm sure it gets even busier later in the day, but they handled the morning rush really well. Overall, I'm glad I finally gave it a try. The drinks are good, the staff is fantastic, and I can see why people enjoy coming here. While I personally don't think it's worth waiting in a long line just for the matcha, I'd definitely stop by again if the wait was shorter--especially to try that Ube Soft Serve. Keep up the great work, guys!

Hmm another matcha cafe... I really want to like this place but I just found the drinks too watery. Maybe just the batch today or something but my matcha kuromitsu and matcha cream latte tasted like watered down matcha. Service: fast Ambiance, busy and spacious

    Strawberry matcha
    Christina L.

Matcha! As of 7/17/2026, it is still a soft opening. The line is a bit slow, but the cafe now does have two staff taking orders. I've been there twice, once in June and July to get a better idea of the store. The prices start at $5 to $10.95. The matcha flavor can be stronger in the drink. My first time took 25 minutes during weekday lunch, order a small matcha latte with strawberry cheese top ($8.60 with tax). The strawberry tastes artificial and quite strong, so it overpowers the matcha. Second time, I went, order a matcha creme, it's a matcha latte with whip cream. The drink was good, but needs more matcha flavor. Plenty of tables in the store and some outdoor seating. Gets slightly cramped where everyone is waiting for order. Overall, the drinks were good, there needs some improvements with waiting time and price

Love how many options are available here! I couldn't decide on what I wanted but I settled on a matcha latte with black sesame and ube swirl ice cream on top. So good!!! The matcha itself was PERFECT and sweet! The black sesame ube ice cream was delicious. The black sesame was nutty and while the ube was light and sweet. There was a long line on a saturday afternoon, but my drink still came out pretty quickly! There's seating inside and outside which is a plus. Staff were very kind too! 10/10 I'd definitely come back to try their other drinks and ice creams when I'm in the area!

    Matcha latte (6.95+tax)

Urban Matcha opened recently in vacated space where Wend's Cafe once was. Across from Castro Valley Marketplace, parking is available in back if any can be found. Stripped lanes stingy narrow, making entering/exiting vehicles a tight fit. One reason to park elsewhere. Outside & inside seating mostly taken post noon. Line to order stretches to door. Line moves Quickly, orders filled fast too. Couple of minutes. Hot drinks not available. Offerings: matcha soft serve/parfait/shaved rice, Uji kinoki, frappe, banana pudding matcha, yuzu/tea/coffee/cheese cap/float selection, matcha latte Sips: matcha latte (L. 6.95+tax) -surprisingly deliz, lots of matcha flavorness, not bitter. Obviously sugared. Better than most renditions. Pricier too. 4.7 stars worthy!! Service: great! Quality: Phenom! Quantity: reasonable . Parking lot only reason not to return.

    Ruth O.

I've been here twice now. The line has been consistently long between 3 and 6 pm during opening week--seems like people are coming from out of town which is good for business. The line moves fairly quickly, I believe in part due to how quickly one can make a latte or put soft serve in a cup as opposed to having to cook or make a meal. The best thing about the items here is they aren't too sweet. The matcha soft serve is a very strong matcha flavor, the black sesame has a black sesame flavor though not as strong as expected, and the ube really tastes quite strongly of ube with that classic slightly savory taste to it. Though they do not offer matcha-ube or matcha-sesame swirl soft serve, you can ask for half and half in a cup or cone and it'll just be a top-bottom split instead of a swirl. The prices aren't too high but they are on the high side. Lots of seating inside and out. They play pretty loud music inside.

Not only are the pastries some of the prettiest that I've seen but they're actually quite tasty (and not too sweet either)! Comes in a nice branded box too. Before I rattle off my reviews of the pastries that I tried I'll say that the pastries here, although laminated, have no crisp and are strictly the soft and chewy type (think Costco croissants). I prefer some crisp, but I wouldn't hesitate on returning here to try more things. - French tart: amaaazing egg custard filling. It's so milky it's almost flan-like! - Brownie fruit tart: omg prob one of my fave brownie textures; not fudgy-dry and not too-cake-like either. Nailed the custard filling as well. I'd say my fave pastry in the bunch. - Passion fruit ganache danish: deliciously tart passion fruit filling! - Sweet cheese bowtie: funny enough the sweet cheese reminds me a lot of Cheez Whiz haha (nostalgic for me) but silkier and lighter in taste. The sweet cheese is only in the center of the bowtie. - Ham & cheese: flavorful ham but could've had a little bit more of it. The cheese part tastes similar to the cheese filling in the sweet cheese bowtie. - Ube moon: mad props for ube jam actually being used here instead of just ube extract like at most bakeries that offer ube treats. I will say though that the ube filling is a bit too dense; maybe the ube jam could've been mixed with some custard to make the filling lighter. Only a couple of customers in line when I visited on a Sunday early afternoon and the display case was still more-than-half full. Okay-ish service; the lady at the cashier was primarily focused on quickly completing orders.

The regular was the best out of the other two in my opinion since it was simple but the bread could have been crisper even though it was warmed up. The other two flavors were very oily and too heavy. Glad I finally tried it, but I think I'm just going to stick to their macaroons.

It's in a corner of a very cute gourmet food hall and had a good selection of goods left in mid-afternoon on a weekday. Service is also friendly and prompt. I had to get the kouign amann because I always get one wherever I can, and also picked up a plain croissant, currant scone, and panna cotta. The KA was decent; I would call this one a diet KA because they only put the sugar on one side so it was more like a brulee'd croissant. I also have to admit that, while this shaping is very attractive, the direction of the lamination makes eating this feel like shards in my mouth. However, flavor was excellent. The plain croissant is very plain. It's decent but I've had better. The scone and panna cotta, however, were delightful. Both had lovely soft textures and wonderful creamy flavors. The scone held up for two days and wasn't even a bit stale when I finally had it for breakfast. Highly recommend this tucked-away bakery in the Castro Valley!

Seven Hills Baking Co was my first stop as I haven't had sourdough since childhood. I got their classic sourdough loaf. Even though it wasn't warm anymore it was still amazing. It was quite hard to cut into with a serrated bread knife, which I'm not sure whether that's normal or abnormal for gluten sourdough. However, the inside was lovely and soft. Nice strong sour flavor, spongy dough that was almost moist (not at all dry). I want to note on the gluten free front that seven hills baking co offers a few items which they advertise to be gluten free. Though the ingredients may be gluten free, the items are baked in the same kitchen, the same oven, and then put side by side with the gluten in the display case. Furthermore I don't believe their ingredients are all certified gluten free. Therefore I do not recommend seven hills baking co for anybody with celiac disease. Do not buy your friend with a gluten allergy or celiac these items. There is most certainly cross contact.

Food: I went here twice and every single time I get any of the shwarmas or meat pies, its cold. Not just a little bit, the entire inside and bottom is soggy cold. It tastes good, super light not heavy, but the coldness makes it unappetizing unfortunatly. Additionally, the biscoff cake was super dry for a milk cake, but the taste is still nice. The saffron and caramel cake are nice though, milky, sweet, pairs well with a hot drink. Drink: Dissapointing. Matcha, Chai, Latte, Smoothie, Refresher--I tried them all and was dissapointing. Matcha (latte, mango, and strawberry) tasted insanely water, same with the adani chai--which is something I look forward to at every cafe. I think increasing the milk content in the chai could really improve it. Coffee was also done poorly (iced and hot). Refresher was alright, super sweet but other than that it wasnt bad. The only thing that was the best was the smoothie. The mangorabian tastes like a chocolatey mango lassi, you can't go wrong with a smoothie. Room for improvement on everything. Overall: Very nice elegant cafe that is perfect for hangouts and doing work, the food needs to get warmed up longer to avoid coldness and all the drinks need to be improved to increase the quality of the taste. Looking forward to the change!

When ordering food, the wait is understandable given the preparation time but drinks are usually ready within 5 minutes (I recommend ordering ahead of time through the app). My go-to order is Signature boba milk tea, 30% sweet and 30% ice. Their milk tea is on the sweeter side so I strongly suggest 30% sweet max. They go heavier on the creamer compared to other locations, which I think gives the drink a well-rounded/not watery profile. The boba is always QQ and sweet. For food, I've tried their popcorn chicken, garlic noodles with short rib, and baked pork chop rice. All were pretty good!

Perfect for an afternoon pick me up. Some mint on top and not overly sweet. I ordered something straight from the menu and it was just right as is. Indoor space with real leather couches and seating and some bar seating with views out to the boulevard. I spent some time here with a very close friend that I just didn't spend much time with in recent times. Covid and other reasons I suppose are to blame. Hours here could be a bit better but the general area is great with the BBQ and marketplace next door. Value seems good too.

Late review. My last visit here was the worst experience of any Philz locations. The person working…read moreat the order station is not personable and lacks customer service etiquette. Not a greeting or any kind of acknowledgement. To top it off, she had me repeat my simple order from their featured menu several times. It wasn't like it was loud indoors. And she made it seem like I was an inconvenience. How much more obviously rude can you be? Maybe she wasn't having a good day but she seemed fine chit chatting away with the fellow baristas afterwards. Not my type of Philz if workers here pick and choose who they want to service. Other than that, they have plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. I do like the spaciousness of their outdoor seating. Parking can sometimes be a nuisance even tho there's a parking lot available. Oh and their featured drinks tend to seem a little too sweet. I plan to stick with my philtered soul. Name says it all. But, not so sure if I'd frequent this location.
