Every spot feels super small! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - There are a lot of tables inside and outside, but it did get very busy on a Saturday afternoon! After we ordered, it took under 10 minutes to get all our items. When the line gets long, you end up going out the side door which makes it hard to look at the menu, but luckily we were able to look it up. There was one staff member taking orders within the line while others went up to the cashier - it made the line go a lot faster. - DRINKS - Matcha Latte with Strawberry Cream Top: I made sure to sip from the cup to get a taste of the Strawberry Cream and it was so good! Really nice matcha flavor too, and when mixed together, it was a great combination. I am happy that my husband told me about this place. It was busy when we got there, line off the door. However, there are someone at the registry and someone was taking orders in the line as well, so it moved quickly. Great service thus far. My husband ordered the Vietnamese coffee with original cheese cap. Delicious it was so flavorful. I love the added cheese cap. I was gonna ordered the match parfait but i needed a pick me up. Such a yummy spot! We came here on a Sunday. Parking was a bit tough but we finally got a spot. The line was quite long but went by quick. We ended up waiting 20 minutes till we got to order. We ordered an ube matcha and a hojicha latte. Our drinks came out really quickly. Both were so delicious! The ube cream top was my favorite. Hojicha Float with Matcha Soft Serve 9/10 Strawberry Matcha Latte 8.5/10 Matcha Lychee Jelly 6.5/10 Hojicha Matcha was refreshing. I love the dark-roasted nuttiness of hojicha, and it pairs amazingly with the matcha soft serve. Strawberry Matcha was good. I prefer getting no sweet since the strawberry foam is pretty sweet. I had some time to kill before meeting up with a friend for lunch, so I decided to stop by and see what all the hype was about. I drove by around 10:30 a.m. and there wasn't anyone in line yet, so I parked and waited in my car for about 15 minutes. The people parked next to me mentioned they were going to get in line, so I figured it was probably time. I got in line around 10:50, and by the time they opened at 11:00, it took about 20 minutes before I was able to place my order. Once I ordered, my drink was ready in about 3 minutes, which was impressively fast considering the crowd. I ordered the regular Matcha Latte with the Ube Cheese Topper. The drink was really good, and the ube topper was definitely my favorite part. The matcha itself was smooth and flavorful, but honestly... was it worth all the hype and the wait? For me, not really. It was a good matcha latte, but I didn't find it to be anything especially unique or different from other great matcha spots I've been to. I do want to go back and try their Ube Soft Serve, but I'm not sure I want to wait in that line again. One thing that really stood out was the staff. Every employee I interacted with was friendly, smiling, and kept a positive attitude despite the steady line of customers. They all worked efficiently as a team, and no one looked stressed or overwhelmed. I've been there twice, once in June and July to get a better idea of the store. The prices start at $5 to $10.95. The matcha flavor can be stronger in the drink. My first time took 25 minutes during weekday lunch, order a small matcha latte with strawberry cheese top ($8.60 with tax). The strawberry tastes artificial and quite strong, so it overpowers the matcha. Second time, I went, order a matcha creme, it's a matcha latte with whip cream. I've been here twice now. The line has been consistently long between 3 and 6 pm during opening week--seems like people are coming from out of town which is good for business. The line moves fairly quickly, I believe in part due to how quickly one can make a latte or put soft serve in a cup as opposed to having to cook or make a meal. The best thing about the items here is they aren't too sweet. The matcha soft serve is a very strong matcha flavor, the black sesame has a black sesame flavor though not as strong as expected, and the ube really tastes quite strongly of ube with that classic slightly savory taste to it. Though they do not offer matcha-ube or matcha-sesame swirl soft serve, you can ask for half and half in a cup or cone and it'll just be a top-bottom split instead of a swirl. We got in the line and waited a little bit over 10 minutes before we got to the counter. They have some chairs and tables inside and also counter seating. There was air conditioned inside so it felt really nice. Outside on the street patio they also have comfortable cushioned chairs and tables with umbrellas to provide shade. The flavor was really rich, and reminds me of the ones I had in Japan. The matcha drinks were OK, not much different than matcha drinks in other places, but the matcha float was a good idea as you can get both soft serve and matcha drink in one. I've had this twice and I am delighted each time with what I get. I can't wait to go back and try some more. The first time I tried a yuzu matcha because I wasn't feeling like drinking anything milky that day and it was pretty refreshing. Have already been here a couple times - once when they did the "practice day" and we got 2 drinks for free, and then a couple more times where we paid full price. I feel like not a lot of things are open after 9pm in Castro Valley so I'm excited to hang out here with friends in the evenings this summer - Pretty solid service - all the gen Z staff is pretty professional and efficient Cons: - Pricing is up there (like $7 or more for most items), but I think that is to be expected for this kind of shop and in Castro Valley - Typical of this area, parking can be pretty tough especially on Friday nights or weekends around dinner time. There was a lot of ice cream which was perfect for the sunny hot day and it's a perfect 2 in 1 where you can try the soft serve and a drink. Inside is very bright and has nice decor, but can be a bit cold especially at night. There are some tables and chairs outside too. During their free drink day, I was able to try the iced matcha latte with ube cheese cap and another iced matcha latte with original cheese cap. Ube had a good flavor, but the matcha flavor could be stronger. It's on the lighter side and I don't think you can adjust sweetness, so they are relatively sweet but not overly sweet. I would still prefer the option of choosing less sweet. Returning for the soft opening, I only opted for the cup of soft serve (ube & black sesame). I do wish the soft serve was more creamy as it was a tiny bit icy but flavor was still good (perhaps I'm too used to the soft serve at Meadowlark). We went opening weekend and the line was long but moving pretty quickly. We waited longer for our drinks than in line! Be patient with the workers they're doing their best!! Unfortunately for the weekend the matcha was pre batched, but I did see a bowl and whisk so I'm guessing when the line isn't crazy they will be hand whisking! I'm really excited, this has to be one of the best things to happen to Castro valley in terms of matcha spots. I went yesterday, so I'm not sure if it was still soft opening. The line was out the door. We waited about 30 minutes. I got the Matcha soft serve which was incredible. We were kind of in a rush, so we didn't have time to wait for drinks to be made since it took a little bit more time so I figured with the soft server it would be easier and faster. A friend and I showed up for the soft opening (or was it truly a grand opening?!) on a whim only to find ourselves in an hour long line. Luckily we had planned to meet for lunch that my friend already picked up so we had it in line while catching up. I'm not too bothered by how insane the line was given it was a "soft opening" aka grand opening tbh. The matcha WAS delicious -- my friend got a strawberry cheese cap matcha latte and I got a banana pudding matcha. I deduced one star mostly because I had asked if the banana pudding matcha was a pudding (like is the consistency something I need to eat with a spoon or is it a drink?) and honestly wish he just said it was a drink because then I wouldn't have added mochi balls that I needed to fish out Lol like I thought maybe it was the consistency of a soft serve. Nonetheless even with the hour long line, our drinks came out rather quickly and I thoroughly enjoyed my delicious matcha. There was also plenty of seating which was amazing given how many people showed up and even space for my friend to nurse her baby! All in all I would come back again; but if there was another hour long line, I wouldn't. Today was an exception! read more
