Went to try their rolled ice cream on a Sunday. The inside of the place was cute and not too crowded or small. Took a while to receive our ice cream because my order got messed up in the middle of it being made; by the time my friend was completely done with his ice cream I finally got mine which I wasn't too happy about. Mistakes happen though. My ice cream was really good. The flavors were fresh and delicious. I like how you can choose as many add on flavors and toppings as you want to your base ice cream choice. Though the service was slow, I'd definitely give them another try. My overall rate of experience: 6/10
I was really disappointed with Urban Ice. I ordered the Sweet New Yorker rolled ice cream. They said they were out of cheesecake, but that was alright. I really love fresh strawberries with ice cream, and that's why I ordered it. I got my ice cream, and it was topped with artificial strawberry sauce, and there weren't any fresh strawberries like the menu said. I also ordered a boba tea. I was VERY confused because it was warm. I've never had warm boba before. The flavor wasn't bad, but the boba was insanely overcooked. It was so soft that it basically disintegrated in my mouth with a really unpleasant texture. We ate only half the ice cream and threw away our boba teas after only a few sips. I don't intend on returning, unfortunately.
I stumbled into Urban Ice after I decided to go for an after-brunch walk. Urban Ice menu serves desserts of all sorts including sweet or savory crêpes, macaroons, stir-fried ice cream, and various drinks (including bubble tea). Stir-fried ice cream, also known as rolled ice cream, originated from Thailand. It consists of milk, cream and sugars mixture stirred to incorporate air spaces on an ice pan and simultaneously cooled to -27 °C/-17 °F. Urban Ice offers dairy and vegan (with almond milk) versions! I ordered the house creation Cookie Doe, which consist of vanilla flavored ice cream with cookie dough & brownie bits mixed in and chocolate chips & cookie dough on top. The brownie was not vegan. I always wanted to try this type of dessert, but often animal based milk products do not sit well to me (with a high lactose). I often look for nondairy options when it comes to these foods, but rolled ice cream usually doesn't fit the bill. I'm disappointed in myself for not remembering my dessert creator's name. He asked me my name and proceeded to make it in front of me on one of the four frozen discs. He suggested add-ins and agreed to having Nutella added to my confection. He pays homage to my namesake and wrote a lyric from one of her famous songs!! Furthermore, he offered unlimited and plentiful toppings. Once he finished rolling process is complete, I had perfect ribbons of smooth, semi-solid ice cream. Once the rolling process is complete, the result is rolls of smooth, semi-solid treat. Let me preface this by saying this is no knock on the talented staff that works here, but a full knock on whoever owns the establishment. Rolled Ice Cream is very much an art form that requires skill and precision to perform. To be blunt, these employees are not given the tools they need to succeed. A Saturday night and only three employees are staffed to take and prepare orders. No matter how good the ice cream is, it shouldn't take waiting TWENTY (20) minutes to place an order and another FIFTY (50) to even receive the full order of ice cream. During this time frame, we had about one person consistently rolling ice cream, another taking orders. I could go to a full-service restaurant and receive an entire appetizer, meal, dessert, and check within that time frame. I think my order would still be getting prepared. The ice cream itself was unique, delicious, and different. It tasted quite good, but again the amount of time I waited was unacceptable. There is no way that the cheapskate owner thinks this an acceptable atmosphere for their customers. Whoever runs this establishment, a: 'Help Wanted' sign should be posted in the front window here yesterday. The amount of turnover from the workflow you're making these employees go through is unimaginable. Additionally, I doubt that they're getting paid enough to deal with these issues created by the poor management. I cannot in good conscience recommend this place to anyone. Owner, if you're reading this, consider selling the establishment to someone else as soon as possible. Hopefully someone who cares about the state of their business.
Sadly we pulled up to this ice cream parlor at 10pm when they were suppose to close at 11pm. Walked in started to check out the menu to be instructed that they were closed. So we didn't get to really experience it, but drove 20 minutes to try it. So a major let down, maybe next time they will be open like the hours state.
We were craving for some sweet desserts. We were planning to go all the way to VA Beach until we saw Urban Ice on Yelp. This dessert shop looks promising so decided to take the tunnel and try their ice creams (and some crepe). The neon sign at the front of the shop makes the restaurant hard to be missed. The shop was very clean, bright, and colorful. We were greeted by a nice man (I'm assuming his name is Jerome). He was very pleasant and helpful. It's our first time but he took the time to help us. I also liked that they will call you to watch them make your ice cream. I ordered a coffee ice cream with a lots of toppings. I can't remember them because it was a lot. My SO ordered a crepe with vanilla ice cream. Watching them make our ice creams was fascinating. You can also add a syrup at the end and more toppings. In case I forgot to mention, their toppings are free and are unlimited. We had a wonderful time. We will definitely be back.
What a fun place to have a special dessert treat. Plenty of options: ice cream, crepes, boba tea plus some more. I went all in and had a crepe filled with rolled ice cream. Flavors varied from fruit to chocolate. You will have a lively conversation if Jerome is preparing your treat. For a first time visit, there were plenty of option and I can see coming back to try many of the other options. No line when I was here and even better there was outside seating to sit at while I ate.
Blue & Jessica took care of me and my family with warm smiles, plenty of patience as we figured out our first time orders and lots of jokes and laughs to help the whole experience go that much better It was not only my first experience at this location but first rolled ice cream experience overall and I left more than satisfied. Very generous portions considering the toppings are basically unlimited at the same cost and if it does end up being more than what the cup holds, they put it in a side cup! Really appreciated that as well. Big thanks to them both!
Have had this place bookmarked for a minute & glad I was finally able to visit. Love the neon sign outside; I immediately knew this was my destination. Once inside, I was greeted and the cashier said he would explain the process to me (absolutely needed!!). Cute decor, love how the menus are all on the wall and such. I must say, this place has a looooot going on. So many great choices, I was lowkey having a hard time! Never had crepes before so I opted for that plus ice cream which was about $12. Worth it? Not really. The crepe was okay, but I would've loved the ice cream just by itself. Maybe if I asked for more Nutella & chocolate drizzle I would've enjoyed it more. The rolled ice cream was good though! Loved the strawberry pieces in it especially once it started to melt a little. The step up seating is super cute & they have many vegan options. I'd say I visit again!
Nice place to grab ice cream if you're not in a big hurry. There is a decent amount of seating available considering it's an ice cream shop. The ice cream/shakes are fully customizable!! I felt that all the employees take their time to help you figure out what you want and make your order. Didn't feel rushed on my first visit. Yes this makes the line go a little slower but it makes for a better experience when it's your turn. Try it :)
The owners are so nice. We had the opportunity to meet the male owner as they are a brother/sister duo. We were able to chat it up on how and why they opened up a rolled ice cream joint. Even though it was around 7/8pm he had lots of energy and brought excitement when you walk in, great customer service. I ordered the Thai tea with a vegan base and Strawberry mix ins. It was the perfect delicate treat. I didn't feel too full after finishing. Granby street has lots of restaurants and we decided to sit outside and people watch. A few people asked us where we got our rolled ice cream from.
I have not had the pleasure to indulge in anything in this shop, but I did walk by and the colorful decor caught my eye... I will get here one day. I am happy to report some loved ones visited and they are super anxious to return. Since my daughter visited on a Saturday night with friends, she has been talking about this ice cream place nonstop. I am unsure of the concept, but whatever it is, my daughter and her friend are so in love. This shop is located on the busy Granby street, so street parking may be available. If not, parking garages are nearby. Nevertheless, the girls (age 11) had the ice cream Saturday night and woke up the next day and wanted to return. Bummer... they open at 2pm on Sunday. Not sure of their hours during other days, but we will return soon. I am excited to try it myself just from their story and their review of it. Love at first - Love at first lick... If you are craving crepes, head to Urban Ice because you will not be disappointed. Urban Ice offers crepes, rolled ice cream, an assortment of regular ice cream flavors, as well as frappuccinos and other beverages. With its location right on Granby St. in Norfolk, it's super easy to find and the people that work there are always very friendly. I stopped in 10 minutes before they closed last week to grab a Nutella Crepe and they happily turned on the crepe machine to make it for me and it was absolutely delicious! I've tried the rolled ice cream as well and it's so good. Urban Ice is a hidden gem and one of my favorite places to visit for great ice cream and even better crepes. read more
We went here for Valentine's Day. I've never had rolled Ice cream before. It was okay, very expensive for what you get. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have any of the vegan items that they advertised. The service was okay, not bad! read more
This little place is definitely a surprise. We met our friends here for ice cream only to find out they also have crepes! We couldn't decide so we got one Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream cup plus a Banana Strawberry Nutella crepe. It was cool to watch them made in front of us- the customer service was friendly - enough.. but for the prices I'm not sure I would return. Our crepe was about $13 and the ice cream was about $13 as well. It's convenient for folks having a late night in Downtown Norfolk so I'm sure they do great business. It was a cool experience so if crepes are your thing I suggest atleast trying it. read more

I'm all for forgiveness, but this was beyond me. Employees were untrained, took forever, and were extremely disrespectful. Food was alright but didn't justify the price tag. Save your money and go down the street. read more

Visiting my family for the week and my niece mentioned she wanted to try rolled up ice cream. So we searched social media and came across Urban Ice. This was such a great experience! My niece and nephew had a blast! They both created their own rolled up ice cream. I on the other hand saw this delicious banana pudding creation on the Instagram page and had to go for it! It was all so good. The owner and staff are super sweet, they truly made the experience amazing. We will definitely be returning! read more

We had an amazing experience! We were warmly greeted and they thoroughly explained their menu which helped us decide what to order. My oldest daughter wanted Boba tea and they suggested rolled ice cream in it. Game changer! We will be back! read more

Dessert and beverage shop with a neat "watch us make it" concept, pleasant service and simple decor in Downtown Norfolk. It's like Skinny Dip's endless supply of toppings meets Coldstone's cold slab crafting approach with Bob Villa's putty knife skills, scraping it all into rolls; good for singles, couples, families and large groups. On a Sat afternoon, my oldest son and I were greeted warmly by Kathryn who, upon learning we were rookies, gave us the run down of the place and directed us to the back counter to order. 1. Pick a base (yogurt, dairy, vegan) 2. Choose a base flavor 3. Pick your unlimited mix-ins 4. Choose a vessel: bowl ($5.99) or crepe ($10.99) 5. Watch your cold treat made in front of you on a -19 degree metal disc 6. Pick your unlimited toppings 7. Enjoy onsite or on the go. We enjoyed nearly every aspect of our visit: the vibe, not waiting to order, interacting with Kathryn as she skillfully made his dessert and enjoying it while playing uno after our order was ready! My gripes? Price-point and product. $12.36 is lofty for vanilla ice cream with 2 vanilla wafers and 8 chopped pineapple pieces in a crepe topped with 3 sour gummy worms and a dollop of whipped cream. Then again, that's what my son requested despite the visible availability of countless add-ins and toppings. The crepe was ok but definitely NOT worth the $5 difference between getting it in a bowl; ice cream was Ike but not top shelf. Overall, the treat satisfied his sweet tooth and he left with a big smile on his face; partly because it was cold, sweet, creamy and delicious and partly because he didn't have to share with his 3 other siblings!!! For those not fans of cold sweets, they sell an assortment of fresh made baked goods along with coffee, boba teas, milk shakes and matcha. I'm annoyed. Obviously, I don't mind paying for expensive ice-cream. I paid 14.80 for The Newyorker that was supposed to be wrapped in a crepe. She mistakenly forgot to mix the strawberries, and her collègue offered to ad some as a garnish instead. NAH here's the thing I'd do it if it were mcdonalds but not when paying 14$ for basic a** ice-cream. NEVER AGAIN I wouldn't recommend read more
2017 saw a craze of Thai / Korean rolled ice cream across the U.S. and Hampton Roads was no exception with two rolled ice cream establishments popping up last year, Urban Ice being one of them. Nestled right in the downtown area on Granby Street, this spot is the perfect place to get a sweet treat after frequent one of the many restaurants / bars, or shopping at the mall. Urban Ice has 4 different ice cream flavors you can choose from. Vanilla, chocolate, green tea, and coffee. The also have a number of different fresh fruit and candy/cookie toppings that you can have either mixed into your ice cream or placed on top when it's rolled. The also pre-selected mixes that you can choose from on a menu. The two times I've been here, I've started with a pre-selected mix from the menu then added item to my hearts content. That's my absolute favorite thing about this place, unlimited toppings with no extra charge! The "Bad Break Up" and the "New Yorker" were delicious, but I must say that the "Bad Break Up" was my favorite out of the two. The service here is great, it's fun watching them make the ice cream right in front of you on the cold plate, and the employees here seem to have fun while doing it. I really like the contemporary decor and colors splashed in this rolled ice cream shop. But that is about where the liking stops. I retract the aforementioned. I do like the employees,they were kind and I do like that they offer military discounts. We came here after doing the Haunted Temple. My sister's relatives were in town and they were excited about checking out this rolled ice cream concept. My other sister who has frequented this place numerous times raves about this place. It looked promising, but it felt short of my expectations. I'm not the 8 year old hello kitty loving girl anymore. Don't get me wrong I love fun, aesthetically novel and eclectic things but when it comes to ice cream I don't need the "extras" as in extra fluff or "frou-frou " ness. I'm sure this place knocks out very worthy instagram cups of ice cream. However, I feel the whole process is very time consuming. I don't want my ice cream to be played with and molded in front of me. Just scoop me my ice cream in it's intended form as a solid and I'll be happy. On the other hand, to dampen out my crab ass sourness and sprinkle some sweetness on me, it's a great place for the young, young at heart and those who just are amazed at witnessing the science of turning liquids into solids. To each his own. If you want a quick scoop of ice cream this isn't the place for you. BUT if you like customizing your ice cream but are willing to pay the price and spend the time, this place may also be right for you. Lots of people love the rolled ice cream joints, unfortunately I'm just not one of them. It's a good establishment, I'm just not the right clientele. They have a concoction called "The break up." It is a bit pricey- ice creams are $6.99, but it is definitely plenty to share! OH MAN THIS WAS SO GOOD! First, I want to thank you to Jerome and Jaque for making our crepes and rolled ice cream. They were so delicious. I think Jerome was super nice and he let us film him making the rolled ice cream. I don't think my husband had ever had any before, so this was an experience for him. I was not expecting the rolled ice cream to be IN the crepe, but that's the one that I got and it was so good. I think I got cookies and cream or something, but I would definitely have it again. The atmosphere in Urban Ice was super chill (haha pun totally intended) and I like that it's a little slice of cool in Downtown Norfolk to have some dessert. read more

Was walking downtown Norfolk and passed by this CUTE ice cream shop! Ordered a custom rolled ice cream (vegan dark chocolate rolled ice cream with Oreos!) It was so creamy and absolutely delicious! so happy for the many vegan options. read more
The new craze - Rolled Ice Cream! I went on a Saturday night around 10pm thinking I would run in and run out. NOPE! There was a line out the door! I guess everyone had the same ice cream craving at this time. There's a menu posted on the door so this gave some time to read and be prepared to order. There's the "make it how you want" by starting off with the base flavor of the ice cream (vanilla, chocolate, Matcha ice cream, taro, strawberry, mango, etc) and then add your toppings OR their house specials already crafted. The good thing about this place is you pay $6.99 and all the toppings are included unlimited. After 45 mins...I finally had my ice cream!! Matcha with strawberries, condensed milk and chocolate. The Matcha was good not overwhelming. But can't do the long wait again, so I probably won't be back for a while. The staff is super friendly and the inside is a cool place to hang out to enjoy ice cream and good music. read more

I want to preface this review by saying I am NOT an ice cream person. I'm the type of person who craves ice cream when it's hot outside, not because I actually like it. So that's what brought me to Urban Ice. Jerome was super helpful. He explained the process. I got to watch him make the rolled ice cream which was DOPE! I don't have a true review of the ice cream because I'm not big on ice cream in general. But, if I was hot and wanted something to cool me off -- the service alone would bring be back to Urban Ice. Now, if you love ice cream, definitely hit this spot up. There are so many toppings and flavors and you can create your own. I kept it simple and chose one of the only flavors I pick whenever I eat ice cream (some sort of cookie variation). All in all, cute place with plenty of options for ice cream lovers. Ice cream on national ice cream day is nice. However, this place is AMAZING. I arrived 20 minutes before closing and half of the tables were filled. And there was a line. I was glad because I had to look over the two page menu to order. I was greeted immediately and waited in line. The place was spotless and there was a seating section upstairs which I decided would be my spot to sit next time. Outside seating would have been taken had it not been raining. One group had about 8 people. Three orders: one bad break up, one sweet new yorker, one the gimme s'mores. I expected to get my order and go. No. Ravi called my name and proceeded to make my order in front of me. Ice cream mix poured on a frozen disc, mix ins added as he asks my add ins, offered suggestions and wrote my name in my ice cream with caramel. He didn't assume anything but asked for my input every step of the way. I added chocolate sauce, caramel and whipped cream. The topper? My ice cream was rolled into perfect ribbons. I was immediately in love with the guy that made my ice cream a perfect show that also tasted great. Already planning my next trip. read more
Happened upon this little gem tucked on Granby St. just a 2 minute walk from Bonchon! Had a hankering for some rolled ice cream but MacArthur was closed.. Thank goodness Urban Ice was just across the way!!! This place has such a great vibe! I the '80s!!! As you step in, you're transported back in time to high school (well, the time I was in high school... the magnificent '80s!) They have all sorts of flavors and mixes!!! While my daughters, cousin, and I were out in Norfolk visiting the Zoo, we decided to take a stop in at Urban Ice. It has been on my list of places to try. Well, let me tell you.. I LOVE THIS PLACE! Please take the time to make your way to Granby St. to check this gem out. The staff here are really friendly and will answer all your questions (since this was our first time here) without any hesitations. You get sooo much ice cream and UNLIMITED toppings, and drizzles. My girls devoured the ice cream! The staff checked on us from time to time, which made it feel so warm and welcoming considering how cold the ice cream is :) WILL BE BACK SOON!! read more
