A fun, unique fast food experience! Good & cheap burgers, cool service, & a nostalgic feel. Love the window tray, super cool experience. Probably the best place to get a good burger at a good price!
I've always wanted to try Doumar's but it's just never really worked out any time I've been in Norfolk - plus, it's not my typical type of food I'm going to go out of my way for. We finally pulled in on Saturday while running errands nearby and decided to get some ice cream. We wanted cookies and cream but that wasn't in season (I thought that was always in!) so we went with a chocolate shake. We walked inside for take out and I browsed inside. It has far more seating inside than I thought on the left side of the building. Dou's is a local staple and something I've known all about for the 18+ years I've lived here. I love that they keep it simple, honest, and low prices with a simple menu and had a board inside with staff members who have been there for 10, 20, 30 and even 40 years! They're clearly doing it right if people are staying that long! Will be back soon to try some food. I saw some breakfast items that looked very good.
Loved this old style drive-in. They were very busy, but served everyone efficiently. You can dine in or have your meal brought to your vehicle. We enjoyed the old style ice cream and waffle cone! Very refreshing on a hot August day! Lived the history about the evention of the first waffle cone!
I really love the concepts of drive-ins and low priced food. However, I feel like my coworkers really overhyped this place. It's probably because they grew up around here going to this place as a kid, but I think this food is just alright. I got their tuna salad sandwich, and their tuna salad just isn't that good. They use sweet pickle relish, which really just throws the whole thing off. Tuna isn't supposed to be sweet. The only thing I found to make it tolerable was the mustard on the table. Which, another thing, why only ketchup, mustard, and hot sauce as your condiments? My dad got their pork bbq sandwich, and it was dry. Not the meat, but the sandwich itself had nothing on it to make it moist. When he asked if they had bbq sauce, they said they didn't. Which, is like what? How can you have this on the menu and not?? Overall, wasn't the best lunch, but at least it was cheap. The fries were standard fries, nothing really special. We did get some ice cream to try as well. Their limited time peach flavor was a true let down. It tasted like yoplait peach yogurt if I'm being totally honest. Their lime sherbet was honestly one of the better flavors. It was refreshing, almost like limeade, not like a pungent sour lime or anything. Strawberry was just ok. Their waffle cones themselves have good flavor though. I can't say I will be back, at least for their food. I'll probably try more of their ice cream flavors if anything. Staff there are very nice, and customers in general as well. I love the vibe, just not big on the food.
Can't beat the prices here. The burgers are just okay, but they hit the spot. I would really recommend this place for the ice cream over anything else! You can stop in and enjoy the vintage vibe, or you can pull up to the parking spots and have your food brought to you. It's cute and has charm! Will definitely be back for desserts, especially over the summer.
We love going to new places especially places that have been featured on DDD. The place is very nostalgic and so much memorabilia on the walls. You seat yourself and there was a wait for us to be served. The food came out and was very good. Loved my pineapple shake it had chunks of pineapple in it. The service could have been better he never came back after dropping off our food and then showed up at the end to give us the bill. The people next to us sat down and never got served. They ended up leaving after about 15 minutes.
Doumars is a really cool blast to the past. It's an old school drive in where the carhops come to your car and bring your food out an set it on a tray that attaches to your drivers side window. Food is good, but nothing special. They have really good homemade waffle cones for their ice cream treats. I typically get a BBQ sandwich and an Egg O Doumar. Service is typically great and the food comes out quickly.
Still a great spot for delicious food, fun to sit in your car and have your food brought out to you! There is seating inside if that is more your speed or come with a large group! This second visit we shared a cherry coke, deluxe burger, fries, and cherry chocolate milkshake!

My ice cream was very reasonably priced - coming from Phoenix, AZ, it actually felt quite cheap. It was also very tasty. Service was decent - not great, not horrible. One of the staff saw me snapping photos and approached me to share a bit of history and showi the waffle cone machine. I really appreciated that, and it made a big difference in my experience with the establishment. They also have binders with old photographs and facts about this and other old diners in the area. You have to go outside to get to the restrooms, which isn't ideal but maybe that's in line with the authentic old-school experience!
Reminds me of my childhood. Classic drive in food place. The food honestly isn't anything spectacular but the experience and prices make it worth it to me. Service is always good, and the restaurant maintains the nostalgic look and feel.
Great little dive with inexpensive burgers and dogs and great ice cream from a local Virginia dairy in a thier hand rolled waffle cones. Nice to see some old places still around to give you some real nostalgia and not some new attempt to recreate it.
Doumar's is a Coastal Virginia tradition.that has remained the same throughout the years. Passed through the family from generation to generation the food, service and customer loyalty continues in this institution. The decor is the same as years passed. There's something very comforting in the fact that at least one spot in Coastal Virginia hasn't changed. The last time my son brought my Manhattan born grandson to visit he wanted to introduce him to Doumar's. It was a place both he and I had frequented often in his youth. It fid not disappoint. My grandson proclaimed the hot dog, served split in two on a hamburger bun, the best he has tasted. This trip my grandson asked for a return visit to Doumar's, again ordering a hot dog and a cherry milkshake. My son had a tuna sandwich with iced tea. My choice, as always, was a pulled pork barbecue sandwich with a limeade. The food, service & old school ambience was fantastic. Please don't ever change Doumar's. You are and will remain a gem we should cherish. read more
Service- Great. Our server was very attentive and made sure he got everything correct. Food- Tasty! I mean it's fast food so it's nothing crazy but I've enjoyed it the few times I've been. I will say that from now on I'll probably stick to the burgers. I wanted to branch out and try the pork barbecue sandwich so I asked our server what style of barbecue it was and he thought it might be similar to eastern NC style. It was not lol. I just don't think he really knew, which is totally fine! I still ate it but I like my barbecue super flavorful so I kept slapping that hot sauce they had on it. The meat itself was cooked and minced how I like...Honestly if I get it again I may just get it for take out and bring my own sauce with me when I come back up from NC. Everything else has been great!! I love the vibes of the place as well. You can order from the car similar to a Sonic, or you can eat inside. Make sure you grab a waffle cone at some point too! They're the original creators of the waffle cone (1905). So cool! I'll be back. read more
Cute old school diner. Service was fast and friendly. The cone was fantastic! Very fresh and had good flavor. We were lucky to get to watch them make the cones. The third generation owner gave us a great history of how the cones were created. It was really interesting to hear about it and watch. read more

Our server was very nice. I wish they had menus already up or even QR codes so you can pull it up, as the first thing asked was if we were ready, but didn't know the menu. Then it took a bit for her to return. There were three of us and we ordered: banana milkshake, butter pecan single dip cone, and a strawberry single dip cone. The banana milkshake tasted a little bit like a fake flavor and only had some banana slices. The butter pecan ice cream was good and the cone was very good. The strawberry ice cream I didn't get to try but looked nice, with fresh strawberry inside. Came here mostly for the nostalgia, but wouldn't return otherwise just because there really aren't enough ice cream flavors and even choosing the one I got was difficult because it's not my usual choice. read more

A man st for anyone visiting the city! The first ever waffle cone was from here and they still make them fresh with an old machine. I opened the place up at 9 and had the Ringo which has the leftover broken waffle cone pieces made into a small sundae. Delicious. Very nostalgic and enjoyable experience. read more

So much fun going to get an ice cream cone! Got to watch cones being made on the first ice cream cone machine dating back to 1904. Had the chocolate ice cream and it was soooo good! Very chocolaty and not sickening sweet. read more
Doumar's has reasonably priced fast food. It's diner style with a drive-in, so you can order from your car and eat outside. The staff was nice and the food came out fast. There's a lunch rush so it's best to go outside of that timeframe. I ordered fries, a bbq sandwich, a cheeseburger, and a vanilla shake. It was less than $20. The burger was ok, I wish it was seasoned, it would have been better. The fries were crispy and hot, but had no salt. They are only about $2.70 so it's not a large order. But still filling. I wasn't a fan of the bbq sandwich. It was just too porky and it didn't have any sauce. Besides the pork taste, it had no flavor. If it had sauce maybe I'd like it more. Also if you're on lunch it's a messy sandwich. It's chopped so it falls out of the bun. In the blink of an eye I lost 1/3 of the sandwich. It was pork and coleslaw all over my shirt and floor. Lol. It was no way around it. I did enjoy the vanilla shake. It was creamy and good!!! Also it was a good size for what I paid. I probably wouldn't go out of the way to eat here often, but if they make a few adjustments it could make the food more enjoyable. Even if it's just salt and pepper it would help the burger. The bbq sandwich should be changed altogether. It wasn't what I expected. I will say their homemade hot sauce is delicious. It had a tangy kick!! It was good to dip my fries in and it helped the bbq sandwich some. All in all I do like to stop here when I'm in the area. The food is cheap and I'm in and out pretty quickly !! Doumars serves up bbq and delicious cones with a splash of nostalgia! I love coming to Doumars whenever I'm in the area because it transports me back to a time when life was simpler. The food is brought to your car by a car hop and is served incredibly quickly. Our car hop was really bubbly and LOVED her job which really enhanced our experience. We ordered a round of burgers and fries. The burgers are simple and melted in your mouth. We finished our meal with cones and a root bear float. The cones are perfectly made and the ice cream complements them well. Overall I always enjoy my visits to Doumars and look forward to many more in the future. read more

Love Doumar's. It's not amazing food by any means, but it is a local staple. I remember coming here as a child and I still continue to come here. They had the first ever waffle cone machine so that's neat. The servers still come out in rollerskates so the vibe is really cool. They're always crazy fast and friendly. It's just a cool experience and a definite must if you're in the area. read more

Historic. That is it, the only reason to visit. The pork sandwich was barely edible and dry. The burger was like a high school cafeteria, as thin and the slice of cheese. No refills on the sodas. The ice cream was flavorless, tossed it after three licks. read more
Stopped into Doumars today on my way to the Chrysler Museum. The location is super convenient for any attraction in Norfolk- the zoo, Chrysler museum, mall and shopping are all nearby. Doumars is a local classic and you can't go wrong with any item on the menu. Walking into Doumars is like taking a step back in time- the inside hasn't changed much and has a classic diner feel. It's a small location but there's plenty of seating and the service is always top notch. Today I had a cheeseburger with all the fixings, fries and a classic Coca Cola. The food took less than 5 minutes from order to in front of me - the food is all freshly made in house down to the bun. It is phenomenal food for the old school prices! The entire meal was under $10. I skipped the desserts today (still trying to stick to my New Year's resolutions) but I HIGHLY recommend a freshly made waffle cone with any flavor ice cream or the cheesecake shake. I suggest you stop by and check it out if you haven't before or if it's just been a while. Doumars is a local favorite and sure to have something for everyone. read more

I decided to try Doumars for lunch today & it was disappointing I ordered a double with cheese and french fries. The burger was dry & the meat looked like it was sitting on the grill for a long time. In addition, the fries were disgusting; cold & not a pinch of salt. Overall lacking flavor I definitely don't recommend b/c you can find better burger spots throughout VA that care about the flavor of the food they provide. The service was mediocre read more

Come here for the experience! The food is just okay, but it is cheap. It's cool cause it's a true drive in experience where the server comes to your window and takes your order then they put something on your window so you can eat right at your car. I didn't go into the building but it looked cute. The ice cream also looked good. Part of history that I hope doesn't go away! read more
Definitely worth a visit as it is the home of the world's first ice cream cone machine and a very cool drive-in diner. I had a grilled cheese and fries with the classic vanilla ice cream cone, all of which was very tasty! My husband had the hot dog and pork sandwich, which he liked but said are not as good as the burger and he was sad that the hot dog is no longer bright pink like it used to be. But still he enjoyed everything! Everything is small, so you can get multiple items without being too full. Our waitress was very nice and fast with everything and we had a great experience :) read more

What do they mean by No Refills? Do they mean No "free" refills?
Yes. I know they definitely do refills on limeades. I'm not 100% on regular soda.
