I was in Norfolk recently and it was lunchtime, so I decided to go to Manny's Burger, located on Lafayette Boulevard in the heart of Norfolk. This place is a Norfolk institution, or at least it should be considered one because it has stood the test of time. They have stayed in business for so long because they are doing something right. Let's get into it... Manny's Burger is a little hole in the wall takeout burger joint. There are no frills here. If you're lucky you can score a seat at the one picnic table outside. You place your order through a window and when it's ready they yell out your name. It's very nostalgic and perhaps that's one of the reasons why they have been around for so long. It's a reminder of a time when life was much simpler and far less stressful and complicated. They have many items on their menu but my favorite is the Manny Burger. It's a beef patty served with lettuce, tomato and pickle with boiled ham on top. I know what you're thinking, boiled ham??? Don't knock it until you've tried it. For reasons that I still don't understand, it all just works together so wonderfully well that I wouldn't dream of changing anything. I've lived near Manny's for 17 years and finally decided to try it today. It's a walk-up window with takeout-only service, though they do have a few picnic tables if you want to sit and eat quickly. I ordered the double cheeseburger platter, and the burger was surprisingly good, better than I expected! My only wish is that they offered homemade fries. read more

You better have a big stomach for these sandwiches! This is a much loved take out style spot in a random location. However, the burgers are huge! Even just a single one is big! That being said, Yum! My boyfriend and I went here because I heard a lot of great things about it at work. Let's start out by saying I arrived 20 mins before closing. The fries was fresh out the grease! When you've been in business for 70+ years in the same location your doing something right! This walk-up is a Norfolk landmark and I just had to try it today as they opened. The location is off busy Lafayette, but in a more residential area. Signage is good. Parking is in their lot on sides and rear. I found the lot to be spotless of debris. The cinder block building has a combination of fresh and old paint, but it's in good condition for the age. There is a single picnic table on the side under a tree. The large menu board displays all the items offered, including a small chalk board special. You order from the right and pick up on the left. For a first time visit I ordered the Manny's Burger Special / burger, ham, LTO (added mayo, deleted mustard) cheese. Side of crinkle fries. Paired with a house made lemonade. Don't expect small talk at the window, they are too busy! Everything comes bagged up and to go. I took my meal to the table and found it in need of a good wiping down. The fries come unseasoned with salt/pepper in the bag. A cup of ketchup and napkins were included. The first bite of the burger was heavenly. The beef, ham and accompanying condiments work together like an orchestra. The fries were hot, huge and crispy. Once seasoned scrumptious! The lemonade was fantastic although I ran out abruptly due to a high quantity of ice. But not to worry they will refill for free. They also offer chicken daily & a weekly fish special. A pretty good food place, tucked away in a sketchy part of town. It's a very small place, have to walk up to the window to give and receive your order. They have a great variety from burgers to seafood. Their lemonade and tea are amazing! Their burgers were good, but it tasted like the burgers you would buy frozen. Though, they do give you a ton of fries!!! Felt very mom and pops type. They give you a ticket number which they will call when your order is ready, and you might end up having to wait a bit for your food, but they have some benches off to the side to sit on, and you can always just call for a pickup order instead. I do recommend to be prepared for tight space parking. This place was busy on a Sunday, and it was hard for a moment to get the SVU in there. read more

So I've been eating here for over 20 years, 15 years ago I would have given it 5 stars but the quality and service has gone down. Don't get me wrong it's still good and an iconic spot in Norfolk. There's not too many places left where you can walk up and order ( no frills, just food ). Today I took my husband there for the first time I told him he had to get the double manny burger and I got some chicken tenders to share with my daughter because well they are amazing! Things you can expect here are large portions at inexpensive prices, ham on your burger and if your going at lunch time l, a line. My inner food snob had been avoiding this place for years. I've driven by it many times, casting my eyes with disdain upon an old and worn out walk-up food shack that barely looks open. Surely, the food here can't be very good. I belong to a Facebook group whose members grew up in Norfolk. Lately, there has been an epidemic of posts reminiscing about how great their burgers are, with comments such as the following: "Best burgers ever!" "Every time I come to Norfolk, I get me a Manny Burger." These posts were starting to drive me crazy, enough to finally compel me to drive out and try one for myself. I fully expected to write a one or two-star review afterwards. It is located at the corner of Lafayette Boulevard and Lyons Avenue in the Fairmont Park section of Norfolk, just off the traffic circle where Chesapeake Boulevard meets Lafayette Boulevard and Cromwell Road. After parking my car into their lot, there was no outdoor seating I could see. The drill here is to place your order at the window at the right, take a number, and then wait until your number is called and pick up your order from the window at the left. Their menu is posted outside between their order window and their pick-up window. In addition to their burgers, they also offer steak and cheese sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, and BBQ sandwiches. I ordered the Manny Burger Combo, which included a large order of fries and a 20-ounce cup of lemonade, currently priced at $6.49. You can order the combo with sweet tea instead at a current price of $5.99. A single patty Manny Burger by itself now sells for $3.79. A double patty Manny Burger by itself now sells for two dollars more at $5.79. Before I describe the food, let me outline a little about what I have learned about its history so far. Some of the details are a bit sketchy, but here goes. When I picked up my order at the window, I asked their Food Service Manager, an elderly Asian woman, what year they first opened. Her answer was 1948. Wow! That's almost 70 years ago. . According to one public record I saw, the building was first built in 1949. So, let's round up to 1950. That's still almost 70 years. Many long time Norfolk residents remember this place under the name of What-A-Burger during the 1950s and 1960s. This was a Virginia based chain that was first conceived in 1950. The first What-A-Burger was opened in Newport News of that year, and there is still one there today on Jefferson Avenue. The What-A-Burger chain is not the same as the Whataburger chain, which is based in Texas. Whataburger has never operated in Virginia, and there was once a court case seeking a resolution to the similarity of their names. Who is Manny and where did he come from? He was the nephew of a 2nd generation Italian Greek family who purchased the property and building for both the What-A-Burger and the nearby Lafayette Grill Manny inherited the What-A-Burger from his family and renamed it as Manny's Burger sometime during the early 1970s. It was his idea to add the trademark slice of ham to what has become locally famous as the Manny Burger today. Contrary to what some believe, Manny is still alive and well. There was a murder and robbery at the Lafayette Grill in either 1987 or 1988. He had just sold the business rights to the new owner, who was killed instead of Manny. Manny left the restaurant business in 1987 to start a new business of his own. In the meantime, he still owns the property and the buildings where Manny's Burger and the Lafayette Grill stand today. Okay, back to the food. My Manny Burger was an old fashioned style burger consisting of a single flat iron grilled beef patty, a slice of ham, cheese that was steam melted into the beef, as well as lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, and a layer of mustard underneath. The first bite blew me away, and I couldn't put it down. The Manny Burger is a simple yet well constructed masterpiece that sings with harmony and synchronicity. It is a oneness of composition that delivers a world of flavor and old-fashioned goodness. This burger is the real deal. My only regret is that I didn't order the double. My Rating: 5 Stars. The fries were your typical crinkle cut fries. They were under seasoned, but did come with a few small packets of iodized salt and two plastic containers of ketchup to add some needed flavor My Rating: 3 Stars. The Lemonade was refreshing, delicious and hit the spot nicely on a hot day, but just a tad too sweet for my tastes. My Rating: 4 Stars. Everything in my take home bag was wrapped neatly with meticulous precision.The burger was housed snugly in a white triangular paper envelope. The fries were stacked in a cellophane bag. A straw was also included for my lemonade. Manny's Burger is a genuine Norfolk landmark that will be truly missed if it ever goes. The Manny Burger itself is a legacy that surely deserves to be enshrined in Norfolk's Burger Hall of Fame. read more

I really wanted to give this place more stars but here were my issues: 1. The person taking our order was rude right off the bat. He did not come off friendly at all. 1 star deducted 2. The sweet tea tasted really off. I'm from TX. I know a good sweet tea when I taste it. This one tasted powdery and not mixed correctly. It left me baffled why there are good reviews on here for it. 1 star deducted Moving on to the atmosphere and the food. I was a little disappointed that there was no seating, but looking at reviews I knew what to expect. I think they could add a bench welded to the side of the building and to the ground, it would make the wait for food more bearable. The food was spot on delicious. They get a Five. I've been eating the Manny Burger special off and on for 35 years. Today, I had the Special for the first time in probably ten years and it's better than ever. The sweet tea is brewed daily, slowly, on a stove top and you can really taste it, with the sweetness just right. Sweeter than I'd make it for myself, but not too sweet for me to enjoy. The burgers are fresh, not frozen, and they include a slice of ham up top with the cheese for a unique twist. The crinkle cut fries are crispy yet not overcooked, and fresh fry oil.
