Solid 4.5 overall. Hidden gem in old Mermaid Winery spot. Enticing menu, majoring in burgers, at reasonable prices with fare from other local spots (Flippin Hangry's lumpia, Azar's hummus plate, etc). Fried pickles and pimento cheese basket ($9, 4.5/5 stats) kicked off our meal - and WOW! Lava hot but fried heaven; it's heavy, you've been warned. Server/bartender was classic Norfolk: loud, boisterous, sassy but sweet. Mezcal old fashion (4.5/5 stars) and cherry limeade (4/5 stars) bevs were delicious. GOAT burger ($15, 5/5 stars) was all-around spectacular; ingredients, texture, temperature, and taste. Sugar crusted Sweet potato fries ($1 upcharge) came with house made dip sauce that was a nice compliment. Wife enjoyed her large portion Steak salad. Open seating in large indoor dining room oriented around the bar. Wall mounted HDTVs throughout. Outdoor patio also available. Gender specific restrooms onsite; shared parking lot. Solid 4.5 overall. It's a newer restaurant that occupies the old Mermaid Winery location in Ghent, and it's a burger bar! I really like that they have a decent variety of burgers to choose from. You can even build your own burger, which is what I chose to do. I loved that they had at least 3-5 options for every category, except for the bun. The temperature of the burger and egg were cooked perfectly to my request. They also have a decent-sized drink menu with a variety of cocktails. The one thing they could improve on is including drink prices on the menu; the only pricing I saw was related to happy hour. The service was good, too! My waitress, Cat, was able to give good recommendations. It's a cute little restaurant tucked away on the backside of the plaza, so it can be easy to miss. Overall, I liked it, and they also had ample patio seating. My only complaints were that my fries were lukewarm, and while the burgers were slightly pricey, the pricing wasn't terrible. I would have liked to see a few cheaper options, though. Overall I would return.

Great bar service with a fun atmosphere for a Saturday night. The food was amazing. I got the double bacon cheeseburger and my fiancé ordered the BLT hotdog (which was fantastic). The pimento cheese and fried pickle appetizer was to die for and I will definitely be ordering that again. I had asked what drinks they were known for and the bartender said she makes a mean PB&J old-fashioned which spiked my curiosity. I ended up ordering two of them lol. Over a great experience and i'll definitely be coming back!

Looking for lunch last Friday and thanks to Yelp, we found this hidden gem! It's in a beautiful location, but not visible from the street. Look it up and. Heck if out - you won't be disappointed. The menu is straight forward pub kind of fare. We started with the soft pretzel, because that's what we do when there's one on the menu. It came out soft and hot with mustard and a cheese sauce. The cheese sauce was done well, definitely not canned nacho cheese. The burgers are waygu beef and they are amazing. Cooked the way you order (mine was the perfect mid rare), there are lots of interesting creations. Since this was our first visit, I did the build your own - cheddar and pickles for me. The side salad was fresh and the blue cheese dressing had plenty of blue cheese chunks. It was the perfect size for a side. Hubby had the Philly chicken - he raved about it. Chunks of grilled chicken and plenty of cheese on a soft tasty bun. His side was tater tots, and we enjoyed them as well. They were served piping hot and well seasoned. Fast and friendly service means we have found our new go to lunch spot! We'll definitely be back.

Their burgers are delicious and the sweet potato fries are out of this world. However their burgers are very small for the price.

The great thing about the wait? It was well worth it. Piping hot food, served with that homemade flavor arrives on dishes that almost match. I chuckled at the mismatched bowls that hit our table. I felt like family before my first bite. Meatloaf! I can't make one, but I'll eat one that is well made. Dense, flavorful and portioned to take some with you. My bonus was that I got my wife's leftovers, too. It was delicious! It was even better when I warmed it for lunch the next day. Traditional sides, worthy of their own review, but I'll keep it brief. I was told they are known for their she crab soup, and now, i see why! It was so good. There was plenty of crab meat in the soup as well. I do wish when it came to deserts that they had a menu for the items. The food was very decent for me to say. The calamari was pretty good when I put in the marinara sauce. The French dip was pretty bland however despite using the sauce. I found the moose chocolate cake very intresting and it goes well with the whipped cream. Postivies ( plus other thoughts) 1. Because of the lack of street parking, my son chose to take a Lyft on our recent visit. It was a good choice. We were greeted and taken to a comfortable table. Service was prompt and helpful. Our last visit to Codex had been late January during Downtown Norfolk Restaurant Week. But when I ordered my cocktail, telling my server my need for a cocktail straw, I was surprised at the answer. She told me that the bartender Addie remembered me, my cocktail preference and my need for a straw. I looked up and she waved at me. It felt wonderful that I has been remembered. The Vodka Martini was presented in the vintage glass so familiar to me. It was the pattern I inherited from my Mother & Aunt, so popular with the WWII generation. Addie remembered how excited I was when I first saw the glass. The menu was awesome as usual. We started with Oysters, Raw with a Citrus Mignonette. Also from the starter section we chose the yummy House Made Pimento Cheese and Everything Crackers. My entree was the Gnudi with Ramps, Chestnut, Black Pearl Mushrooms, & Asparagus in White Wine Lemon Sauce. My son chose the Tuna. Both were amazing with perfect presentation. We shared the Roasted Cauliflower, which was a culinary masterpiece. When time for the dessert menu came, my son first declined. But I remembered there was a choice that I can never pass up, When the menu arrived I was excited to see that one of my favorite desserts was still on the menu. Olive Oil Cake with Lemon Curd on the side, you are wonderful. My son first declined to share but decided to take a bite. And....that was all it took. He shared the entire cake with me. It looked so good that I took a bite before taking a picture. It was a delightful evening when I needed one the most. Both my server Laurel-Manette and Addie were welcoming and friendly. I promised to return with one of each of the many types of glasses in the vintage stemware pattern. The small one used for my cocktail was the only size they had seen. Laurel-Manette made my night when she told us that dessert was on the house. If you've never been to Codex it's a must go! There's nothing about it that I would change.
