Monks is SO good--truly a hidden gem in Pungo (though by now, most locals are in on the secret). It's the perfect quick stop for a burger and a beer. Took a last minute ride out for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Got the standard cheeseburger and fries. I was quite pleased. This is a fantastic little local spot down in Pungo, just south of the Military Aviation Museum and Cullipher Farm (and a great lunch stop if visiting either of those!). Super casual, come as you are, and family friendly. Around noon on a beautiful Sunday, they were busy but not at all crowded. Plenty of seating both inside and out (it's not a huge space, but for being so far out of the way it seems to be enough), and you sit wherever you like when you get in. We each got the large cheeseburger (1/3 lb) fully topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and mayo. One with Onion Rings on the side and one with Mozzarella sticks. Our son did the kid's chicken tenders, which they brought out a little ahead of our food as soon as they were ready. The food was REALLY good. The cheese was so well melted, the burgers themselves insanely juicy, the toppings fresh. We loved the sides, and I'm not sure if they make the onion ring sauce in house or what it was but it had a hearty kick of horseradish which I LOVED. I will say, the prices seem to have increased over the years based on past menus I have seen. Is it a little expensive for a local "dive"? Maybe. But it's still on par with most restauranta these days, and the quality was worth it in our opinion. As others have mentioned, it is cash only, but they do have an ATM on site for those who need it. We were a little unsure how to wrap up the meal and eventually realized you oay at the counter when done. They do some pretty great beer specials, and have Biker Nights and Karaoke Nights as well! Cheap. No frills. Delicious! This is totally a biker bar vibe. It was a warm-ish Sunday and several bikers were out enjoying the weather. Most seemed to be regulars here. It was a upbeat, friendly atmosphere. This spot is cash only, but don't worry about not having enough, everything here is reasonable priced. We got two burgers, two drinks, onion rings, gizzards, and fried okra and I think it was still under $35 (don't forget to tip though) and entirely too much food for just two people. We had leftovers ready for the air fryer. The burger wasn't anything fancy. They didn't have dozens of crazy options. Just the burger, gooey cheese, and they basics. The bun was toasted and it was delicious! There is lots of outdoor seating which was perfect for social distancing and bringing the pup to enjoy the experience. Found this nice hole in the wall by chance. Walked in and was greeted by a bunch of friendly folks. I had a beer and the pimento 1/2 pound cheese burger with Bacon and it really hit the spot. Back woods on the VA-NC border where you can order fried gizzards and livers (unfortunately out of stock during my visit). Staff was friendly sly and welcoming. They had a NFL game on. I got a small Cheeseburger and she got a fried bologna sandwich. The menu is small and basic. But you can get okra and fried gizzards. Don't always see that on menus. The burger was delicious and I loved the crispy crinkle cut fries. They came out unseasoned so add that salt. Definitely worth a stop if you are driving by. Take this one and put a check mark on the Bucket List. I've been waiting to come to Monk's Place for a long time. In fact it seems like forever. Monks is a little bit out of the way from most folks day to day travel routines. You can find it in the south part of Pungo, but before you get to Creeds. It's in a little red building on a big left turn. I'm sure you've seen it if you've every passed out this way. Monk's is famous for it's burgers and rightfully so. This is a fantastic no frills burger. Sure you can get anything you want on it, but what's so good about it is just how basic it is. Make sense? I was out on a photo run with fellow Yelper James R. and we had hit everything from Pungo all the way down to Currituck Island Ferry dock in Knott's Island and back that day. We were hot and hungry. If you can't tell from the front of the building, it should be obvious when you walk in the door, the place was at one time a house. The bar is on the left and seating is on both the left and right sides of the room. We grabbed a booth on the right and waited for the server who acknowledged us when we walked in. While I'm thinking about it, it should be noted that every other booth was taped off for social distancing. There's also seating outside BTW. Back inside they were using fully disposable items. Disposable plates, cups and silverware. On with the review. As you look around there appears to be a kind of wallpaper all over the establishment. As you look closer you will notice they it's all signed dollar bills that have been stamped, stapled and glued to walls. Some are even in higher denominations. They were fun to read while we were waiting for our order. James and I both ordered 1/3lb Bacon Cheeseburger's. I had mine all the way minus onion with a side of crinkle cut fries and ice cold Coca-Cola. Our server immediately brought out drinks out in cans with a cup of ice for each. I think we waited maybe 15 minutes for our food to come out, not bad at all when there were a couple other tables full inside and at least 1 outside when we arrived. My meal was delicious. Again I can't stress enough the simplicity of this meal. This is no gourmet burger that you pay to much for and end up still hungry afterwards. Nay Nay... This is more like a burger you make at your neighbors cookout. The burger was sticking out from the bun, the bacon was plentiful and crispy with the cheese melted on top of it. The fries were golden brown and crisp. Portions were perfect. Pros: Great Food, Friendly Staff, Very Clean, Great Prices. Cons: None. All in all I wish I hadn't waited so long to come here, but maybe in the long run that will make me appreciate it even more. I'm looking forward to returning and bringing some friends. read more

It's a long but lovely drive there and you're thinking, it's so well recommended it will be a place worth going to. You passed the darling bee and biscuit miles back. Finally you see Monk's and ok, it's a shack on a strangely laid out joint of several streets. Nothing wrong with a shack. Sometimes shacks serve the best food. You walk in. Every inch of wall and ceiling is covered with fluttering laminated autographed dollar bills. Dollar bills are dirty, and this restaurant decorates with them.--I have since learned it's a biker bar. I saw no bikes. But it does serve food, display a Best Burger banner above its door, have a rest room, and allow you to sit and rest while you dine. Seating is lovely. Small vintage wooden booths with no upholstery. We got there as they opened at 11. Ordinarily I don't like upholstery but this place is cold, as in "We just opened when you got here and haven't turned on the stoves yet" cold. So a seat pad would have helped. Can I get something hot to drink (it's December 28)? "Sorry, no hot drinks." The menu says iced tea. I don't ask her to microwave a mug of iced tea because I noticed a bit of discontent in her demeanor, unusual for the remarkably friendly atmosphere of Virginia Beach. We ordered small burgers, fries, deep fried pickle chips and deep fried gizzards. We wanted the deep fried chicken livers, but "Sorry, we don't have those today. Not yet." The $9 1/4 pound burger, its bun lightly greased and grilled, fresh crunchy lettuce, ripe tomato, was good. The ground beef was tender, contained no gristle. The $5 fries were unexceptional. Pickles held together well because they were made from solid, young cucumbers without a lot of saggy seeds. Gizzards, the waiter assured us, were not tough or chewy. The gizzard connective tissue was indeed tough and chewy. The little blips of meat they connected were tender. I love gizzards, whose meat is tender, but I have never been able to make them so the connections are tender, so her comment seemed a little placating. We dipped them into a decent, apparently homemade ranch dressing and chewed away. Water came in a plastic bottle, I assumed because you can't serve well water without an expensive sanitizing system. They charged $1.50 for the bottle which I believe was a Sam's Club brand. When we were ready to leave, we were told to pay up front. We did so with no bill in hand. The cashier asked our waitress what we had ordered. The charge for the two of us was $35. Sounded right. Then we were told they accept cash only. I rarely carry cash, but that morning I had stashed a $50 in my wallet. I never carry more than an emergency $20, but it's Christmas and I had been giving holiday tips to my apartment maintenance people. The cashier handed me my change, asked me how was our lunch. My friend said Very good and I whispered "Hot tea would have been nice." ""I'm sorry," she responded quietly, politely. We walked out and I could hear the waitress's tone warm up with people I assumed she knew. A mile down the road I realized I hadn't left a tip. I never leave a tip of less than 20% or $5 per meal, even if the meal is toast and jelly. Having waited tables for years, it's how I empathize. But we had been surprised that we had no check, had to walk toward the exit to pay, had to pay cash and felt like we were not even welcome enough to turn on the heat for. I was glad to be out in the warm December sun. The hamburger was good. read more

My husband and I went to Monks Place yesterday. We arrived a little after the lunch crowd. We were greeted as we walked in. We enjoyed perfectly cooked hamburgers and crispy fries. Samantha not only gave us great service, she cooked our food just as we asked for. She took care of everyone else around us and gave them all personal attention. She is an amazing multitasker! Outstanding burgers! I absolutely LOVE a hand pressed freshly made burger but going to those "fancy" burger restaurants is useless for me since I'm simple. I prefer a simple plain burger, no cheese, nothing but the beef, a bun and top it with some cold ketchup. Boring! But even a simple plain burger here was juicy, served piping hot on a buttered and grilled sesame seed bun with the buns edges having that black grill mark. Mmmmmmmmm.
