I stopped into Bold Mariner on Wednesday night while I was out walking Lexi. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, around 70 degrees, and we walk past there all the time, so it felt like the perfect night to finally stop in. Our Yelp Elite manager works there and had told me to come by, so I decided that was the night. I grabbed a glass of Moscato while we chatted, and she convinced me to order their hot honey pepperoni pizza to take home. I had literally just had pizza the night before at another event, so I wasn't planning on getting more, but she insisted I try it. I'm so glad I did. I'm not usually someone who goes for hot honey or anything spicy, but this pizza was incredible. The crust was perfectly cooked, the dough had great texture, and the balance between the sweetness of the honey and the pepperoni was surprisingly addictive. It was cheesy, flavorful, and honestly hard to stop eating. I had planned to take it straight home, but I had to sneak a bite while it was still hot. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and it's such a great neighborhood spot. It made for the perfect stop during a beautiful evening walk. I ended up taking the rest of the pizza home, and it was the perfect dinner while relaxing and winding down for the night. I'll definitely be back, especially now that I know how good their pizza is. I've only tried their coffee and morning parfaits so far, but I'm officially hooked! My absolute favorite is their hot chai tea with lavender -- the perfect blend of spice and floral notes. It's such a cozy, calming vibe that makes my mornings at work start off just right. On other days, I go for the iced mocha with an extra shot of espresso when I need that extra boost. It's rich, chocolaty, and gives me the perfect jolt to power through a busy morning. I've also tried the strawberry parfait, and it's delicious -- light, smooth yogurt layered with strawberry jam, granola, and a touch of strawberries for sweetness and crunch. Great portion size and super fresh! Coffee is served from 7 a.m. to noon, so don't be late if you want your morning fix. I'm a huge fan of Bold Mariner, and their beers, so when I heard they were opening up a coffee shop, I was stoked. Since I work remote, I usually try to find a coffee shop or two to work from each week. This week, I decided to give Bold Coffee a whirl. The coffee shop is located inside, on the opposite side of the beer counter, where the BBQ spot used to be. The first thing I noticed was the delicious fresh pastries in the window. From homemade bagels, to strawberry filled croissants and cinnamon buns, I was drooling. I ordered an iced americano with a splash of oat milk (usually go for almond milk, but they don't offer that ... yet?), and I paired it with a sesame bagel with cream cheese. Both options were fantastic. The baristas were super friendly, sharing their favorite items on their menu. The bagel wasn't too large, which I'm a huge fan of. I sat down and did some work for a while. It was quiet, with chill music playing in the background, which fit perfect for the morning vibe. I most definitely will be trying the cinnamon bun one of these days, holy cow it looked incredible. If you're in OV and need a new coffee shop to try, definitely swing by Bold Mariner! read more

Last Saturday, Sophia and I made the trip here at one of favorite spots in Norfolk. Where else can you get pretty good beer along with offering great eats from Bar-Q? Other than eating food, I also couldn't resist ordering one of their seasonal selections. Let's see how this one turned out. After placing my order with Bar-Q, I went on ahead and ordered the Better Together beer, which is a blonde ale with strawberry and rhubarb. Pretty good indeed. You could taste the flavors with each sip. It wasn't very strong nor bitter at all. Too bad this is a seasonal selection or I would constantly order it. When beer goes well with your selection, you know you're in heaven. Very quick service to go with a calm environment. I call this a really good visit for the both of us. The Bold Mariner is a solid 4 stars for bbq food taste and selection options, well brewed tap beers and friendly service. A bit odd, but it seems to work for the companies and mostly as well for the customers, the brewery and the bbq are two separate companies operating under the same roof. You pay at one register for your drinks and a different register for your bbq. They have a variety of on tap beer selection, with CPO IPA and Stout are very good. The bbq had good selection of meats and side choices. Flavors for the beer and bbq were good; I really enjoyed both. The staff for the both beer and bbq were helpful and friendly. Veteran owned business so I'm happy to support them. Can round up beer bar bill to donate to a military charity. Two downsides: the seating area is open space so it gets loud. It's louder than "moderate" in my opinion. Add the DJ, who was decent, but it added to the noise level. Our table couldn't talk at all when music was playing. Music was on top of all the other tables trying to have loud conversations. I'm getting too old for this. Overall, The Bold Mariner is a recommend for the beer on tap and bbq. Come in the afternoon and be gone by 6 pm (1800 for the rest of us). Too loud for me after that! read more

After just one experience I can easily weigh in with a recommendation. The building just off Shore in Oceanview has an interesting history as first a local bank that closed due to embezzlement of one of their leaders. Lots of brews offered but an Octoberfest seemed to be a perfect fit with Fall just arriving. It was delicious paired with their food partner Bar Q. The staff was friendly and my brew was cranked right out. The space is excellent with multiple rooms with wood floors. Large TV's had football on. They offer a few games too! Woah. Made a trip to Virginia well worth it. Wife and I took a trip to see her best friend in Norfolk. On our agenda was watching the Air Show and to cruise around and enjoy a brewery or two. I thought the Air Show was going to be the highlight of our trip, but the Bold Mariner was hands-down the best part. The Bold Mariner was one of the last things we did on our trip and I'm so glad it was. Really punctuated our trip in the best way. We had visited two other breweries that really didn't impress. Not only was the beer here exceptional, but the BBQ was also incredible. The brisket here was the best I've ever had. I'm no stranger to BBQ places, but their brisket was just in another league. The sides were also great; we enjoyed some mac and cheese (that was great) and some green beans (also great) to pretend like we're balancing things out with something healthy. One thing of note, they had this neat game on some of the tables. I wasn't sure what it was, so I googled it. It's called "Close the Box". Neat game. Although we didn't get to play, seemed like the perfect fun table game for 2-4 people. The Bold Mariner offers some of the best BBQ you'll ever have, some of the best beer locally, in a chill atmosphere. Decent size of brews brewed there. Selection really lacked darker and maltier beers and any that just weren't overly hopped. Porter lacked depth. Food...we expected the BBQ place but got a weird new very limited menu. Burger was about all we could really consider. $16 with fries, ended up a pre-cooked patty that was overly coated with garlic aoli and just was a funky taste. Just not what we wanted and almost just left without eating it. No good reason to even bother returning. read more

Oh my gosh! The customer service here is unreal! It's hard to find employees who actually care about the customers experience and happiness. Mamie went above and beyond. She stepped in when I needed her and made sure that I got fed after walking to the only restaurant in the area. Mamie was so friendly and her positive energy was contagious. Alex and AC were also helpful but Mamie stole the show! And the food...wow! The bbq chicken sandwich is so good and full of meat! The mac n chz, potato salad, corn and cole slaw were all delicious. We popped in in to have a few beers on a Sunday afternoon. I loved the look of the place; it's a beautiful building inside and out with a nice wrap around porch. It was hot outside so we sat indoors. There was a good amount of seating downstairs. There is an upstairs, but it was closed at the time for a private event. The people working here were friendly and they had a good variety of beers. We enjoyed all of the ones we tried. The inside also has the heavenly smell of barbecue from Bar-Q which is set up inside to satisfy your hunger. Their food looked and smelled fantastic and we heard a lot of good feedback. We had just eaten so we didn't partake this time, but gives me a good reason to return to pair their awesome beers with that delicious looking barbecue! Nice local brewery with a BBQ joint inside as well! I don't drink anymore so didn't try the brews BUT I did use to love some craft brews and from their menu and the aroma they make some good stuff! The BBQ was ON POINT! We came for a Christmas party for Ocean View Run Club and CrossFit Little Creek. Had the brisket sandwich and the smack n cheese. Man it was awesome! Everything was really good and enjoyed both the beer and the food, the wait for the food was a little long but other than that everything was great. There is a parking lot so parking is not an issue. You order beer from one side and then food from another. My friend and I ordered a flight of beer Frogman Lager - I liked this vienna Lager and it was simple to drink. It is obviously a Lager and a good drinking beer. Sakura - this was absolutely delicious and my favorite of the 4, it definitely had those cherry blossom notes. I was sad this didn't come in any cans to take to go. Direct Deposit - I'm not usually a sour fan but this was pretty refreshing. It wasn't as tart as I imagined and you definitely get the fruitiness. Hindsight - Love stouts and the flavors they're able to encompass. I didn't quite get the Vietnamese style coffee flavor but you do get a hint of coffee. Also quite flavorful. We ordered a lot of the sides and the Smack and Beef Sandwich. That was delicious, the jalapeño had a good kick and the Mac and cheese on there was so good. We got a separate side of the Smack & cheese, the cornbread, Peggy's Corn, Potato Salad and Collard Greens. The Cornbread actually tasted like pumpkin bread but it was still good. I really liked Peggy's Corn - it was delicious and a really good side dish. The potato salad was simple but had really good flavor. The collard greens was good but I not one of my favorites. A good place to grab a beer. They have a limited selection of snack type food but the hummus plate is great. If you go on the weekend you can get some of the best barbecue. The staff is always friendly and helpful. There is always plenty of seating. The tables are made of slabs of wood and are large enough to accommodate a bigger party. This is going to be a regular stop for me, as its right in my neighborhood, and they are amazing! I enjoyed all the beers I had, and they have a wide variety for anyone's taste. I particularly liked the Norfolk-Paris-Kyiv IPA. Inside is also an amazing BBQ place that makes some of the best brisket in the 757! The wraparound porch with adirondack chairs is a really nice place to sit with a pint. I also give them a lot of credit for great options for non-beer drinkers. They have some good Bordeaux wines at fair prices (under $30 a bottle), as well as making a hard cider and flavored seltzer. My wife doesn't like beer, but these options made it an easy sell to get her to come check it out with me. I remember when this building first opened as a bank thinking it was way to pretty to be a bank. As a local brewery, it's perfect! read more

Spent a night in Norfolk and this brewery was a good choice to have dinner and some beers. The high note I would say was the bbq (from Bar Q) more than anything, beers were good but not impressive. I wish I could leave a separate review for the food so I could give 5-stars to quality and service. Tried a pound of spare ribs and some sides, all were absolutely delicious! The ambiance was great although it was a little difficult to find a table on a Thursday at 6 pm (there was some trivia game going on), it was also difficult to find parking. The service in the brewery side was so so, the guy in the cashier gave up on me and didn't try to understand my English/accent (which was a bit racist I would say). He didn't even try to understand when I was asking for a Belgian white style beer. Anyway, other than that, ok for the beers, I tried 4 of them in flight (~$21). read more

Exterior of this brewery is gorgeous. So enticing. Since the first time I drove by, I've been wanting to check it out. Lots of parking, which is awesome, also. I was surprised when I walked in and saw that there wasn't a surplus of seating. We ordered beers and found a seat, which was horribly uncomfortable. Tall, but tiny high top chairs pushed up against a table with no leg room. Disastrous. We could have moved to some nice adirondack chairs, but those didn't offer a table and we were ordering food. These guys are great but I want to call out an often overlooked aspect of breweries. They have the BEST water you will get anywhere. I kid not when I say the room brightened and all my senses were engaged with that first sip. It wasn't carbonated but i wish they would to put Topo Chico or Perrier to shame. I don't know if it's municipal or they have an on-site filtration but the water is amazing. I shifted from beers to waters once I took a sip. It was super clear, super crisp. Don't let the optimal bubbles in the photo fool you, it was like I had just reached the highest peak in the Austrian Alps for a sip from a babbling brook. I should have asked what pH and alkalinity it was but I will next time. It had soft, smooth taste suited for room or cold temperature. I started with a cold glass but gravitated to room temperature. No regrets but I will try the opposite next time. And Michelle! She was spectacular to see serving up water to friends and I. I think Michelle's bubbly character added to the water quality but it would still be considered renowned regardless. For whatever reason, I didn't get a photo with Michelle and water so I will shout for Michelle as soon as I arrive again, emboldened to ask for a water before the beer. I highly recommend you experience the atmosphere, Michelle's friendliness, and several glass of Bold Mariner water. If anyone can get the source, chemical properties, or recommendations for this water please let me know. Maybe with enough praise they will figure out how to can and mass distribute this gem. Gorgeous brewery! From the outside it looks like a large house and when you go in it's so cozy. There's plenty of space inside as well as outside too. My friends and I came for Trivia Night (Thursday) and although we were absolutely terrible (I think we got one correct haha) we enjoyed the atmosphere, beer and food. I'm not a huge beer person so I can't really give the best advice, but my best friend is a huge IPA person and raves about their craft beers. The food was the highlight though...Bar-Q man... Authentic Texas BBQ made with love. It was burger night and I've never had a smoked burger before. Needless to say it was the best burger I've ever had. The owner Jayme was also very sweet and he even gave us secret tester cookies that will *hopefully* be on their menu soon!
