    Chicken Smack bowl
    Belle A.

It is overpriced for what you get and not really worth the money. The gentleman was kind enough to separate the chicken from the other meats because of a ln allergy, so that was good. The smack and cheese was good but not healthy! Good for where we were at given the proximity of the place we were looking to check as a long term rental.

    Brisket sandwich w/smack-n-cheese

It has been a year since Sophia and I stopped here for some pretty good BBQ. For the past visits, we've never left disappointed. So we decided to stop by early enough before foot traffic came for the beginning of summer. Good vibes ahead? When we arrived, it turns out they were out of a few things, including my beloved sweet potato cornbread. And they were short staffed due to folks being out, mostly for family vacations. So I settled for a brisket sandwich along with smack-n-cheese which is smoked mac and cheese. The meal itself was good. The sauce that went with the brisket (I believe it was mustard based) was pretty good and the protein was cooked perfectly. The mac and cheese was okay. I've not a big fan of it and I was debating between this and collard greens so I picked the other. Nothing against the staff for this. But I was pretty full due to the beer I had (that'll be on Bold Mariner's review). Overall, a nice visit for both of us. And kudos to the Bar-Q staff member who handled the ordering, prepping the food and taking payments. He was the MVP for the day. We will be back here probably for the Fall. Till next time :)

1/2 pound meat platter with slaw, Mac and cheese, and green beans

Some of the best BBQ that I've had up North. The pulled pork itself has amazing smokiness and the brisket just fell right apart. EVERY SINGLE side was so tasty as well. The green beans were nice and crisp with a good kick and the Mac was just bussin. The slaw wasn't heavily mayonnaise-based, keeping it refreshing and light! Definitely recommend

1/2 lbs of ribs and El Borracha sandwich

This spot is awesome! It's inside Bold Mariner and we ordered 1/2 ribs and El Borracho sandwich (both pictured) the BBQ sauce on the ribs is fire, not spicy at all. My kid demolished all the ribs in record time. The sandwich had pulled pork and sausage on it, super yummy. The coleslaw is sweet and comes through nicely. The pickles are fantastic and I could eat those with the bbq sauce all day. Service is order at the counter and they were busy but still turning orders quickly. Ambiance as I mentioned, it's in Bold Mariner so you can order a drink and BBQ at the same time just from two different registers. I will come back for the BBQ, not so much for the beer.

After trying the major BBQ joints in the 757 Bar-Q is my overall favorite. Did this surprise me? Well it absolutely did. Find them inside The Bold Mariner Brewery in Oceanview Norfolk. There is no signage for them at the road. So after one visit I feel very comfortable in a 5 star review. This is based on food, atmosphere, cleanliness, service and price point. I went large ordering the sample platter which gave me an overall respect for the blood, sweat and tears they put into their product. Everything is made on premises in their smokers in back. Service at the counter was helpful and super friendly. The meat on the platter consisted of brisket, pulled pork, sausage and ribs which was my favorite. Sides of collards, macaroni & cheese, pumpkin loaf & two slices of bread. They also toss in house made pickles and jalapeños. I paired it with a Bold Mariner Octoberfest. Although the ribs were a fave the brisket was a close second. They provide two sauces on the tray. The sides were strong as well. If you have one desert you better knock it out! The butter cake was fabulous! The atmosphere is perfect for enjoying barbecue and brews outside on their porch. Dogs are allowed. Interior they have plenty of space with three rooms. TVs and games highlighting the experience. Everything was clean and policed by staff. Restrooms are in the front. Finally pricing. I'm not sure how they hold prices when everyone else is raising them. For the amount of food on the platter that could feed three it was a downright bargain and really appreciated by Bar Q. People are hurting and they recognize this. I can't wait to return and be a regular. Keep in mind they are closed Monday & Tuesday.

My husband and I were in rush to get back home in Maryland but stopped by right when we were departing. We were attempting to dodge traffic and Hurricane Ian related chaos. We arrived closer to closing time during the weekday at the strong urging of our 757 Pal, J. David H. The place was bustling and I still get smiles remembering the wonderful food we had on our way home. We ordered the burger as well as mac and cheese to go. The taste of the burger was incredible. It was lined with peanut butter and it complimented the burger perfectly with the pungent flavor of pickles. The meat was perfect. I've never had a burger quite as good before. I am drooling as I am writing this review and it's been nearly 3 weekends ago that I was there. It is my regret that I didn't buy 3-4 burgers to take home and enjoy. I really should have done that like J David suggested. I can't wait to return and taste the amazing food again.

I ended up at Bold Mariner with some friends and saw that there was Bar-Q inside. I ordered the PB Burger which was topped with peanut butter, pork belly, jalapeño, pepper jack cheese, and red pepper jelly. It was interesting enough to try and was delicious! I also got to try the potato salad and sweet potato cornbread. It's a bit on the expensive side but very good food. I did enjoy the atmosphere. It's a nice place to have a few drinks and good food with friends.

Brisket burger with pork belly, peanut butter & pepper jam SO GOOD!! With mac and cheese

If they have their award-winning brisket burger on special, get it. Bar-Q is located within the Bold Mariner's brewery, which may be why I wasn't blown away. The brewery itself has odd seating arrangements and we were stuck at a table that just wasn't very comfy. Even though it wasn't overly crowded, there just didn't to be an excess of seating. Bar-Q however definitely brings great food to the space. We ordered the recommended burger and were not disappointed. Tender brisket cheeseburger with jalapeños, peanut butter, pepper jam and perfectly cooked pork belly... it was seriously great! One of my favorite bites however was the pickle served on the side. Best bread and butter pickles Ive had. We also got the mac and cheese, which was sad. Our luck.. we got the last scoop from the pan, which had obviously been sitting there just a bit too long. It was on the dry side and just not gooey. The cheese that was there had hardened, creating a texture that just wasn't what we were looking for. The guy after us however, got a steamy scoop from the new pan and it looked AMAZING. Sad day for the mac & cheese lover, but guess that just means we will have to come back. Prices: high, but pretty worth it.

Beans, street corn, brisket and pork

I visited Bold Mariner prior to trying Bar-Q, as the day I was there they weren't open. From the reviews (and the fact that Bold Mariner has some great beers) I knew I'd have to give it a try on my next trip. I am glad that I did - as this is some of the best BBQ I've had, not just in Virginia. Coming from someone that lives in the Carolinas, that's saying something. I have been here at least 2 more times, and it's now a regular dinner stop when I'm in the area. I've sampled the pork, brisket, and several sides, and everything is delicious. It's not the cheapest BBQ, but it's a fair price for what you get. The "street corn" side is amazing, and it all goes nicely with Bold Mariner's beer offerings. I brought my entire family here for a meal, and was happy that we could buy meat by weight and have a "family style" meal. If you're looking for great BBQ and good beer, stop into Bold Mariner and try Bar-Q's food, you won't be disappointed.

Ribs, pulled pork, links with Mac n cheese and potato salad
    Ara A.

Finally had the opportunity to try the bbq and I was glad it was as described by other yelpers, we had the ribs, pulled pork, and sausage links. For sides we had the smack n cheese and potato salad and both were absolutely delicious. The ribs were falling off the bone and flavored well, the pulled pork was the star of the show. It was so tender and moist. The sausage link for the week was the breakfast links and I was a big fan as I just like the traditional smoked links. All in all excellent, but the prices are definitely on the high side.

    Cookies and cream Krispy bar
    Tami H.

The only reason I'm giving this a one star because the staff was super friendly. I was so hyped to try this place since for the last year the ratings have been above 3 stars. The atmosphere was laid back but me and my daughter got our food to go. Since I had planned on making a review I wanted to sample. So the daughter got the pulled pork sandwich with cornbread as her side. Me and my son both got the brisket sandwich with the greens and smackin and cheese for our sides. Oh and I got the banana pudding cup and the daughter got the cookies and cream rice Krispy bar. So I went straight for the sides. Bar-Q I have one question where is your seasoning is there any thing I that kitchen but salt and pepper. These had to be the most bland straight cut boiled in non-flavored water I've ever had in my life. So that got spit out immediately. So tryin to keep and open mind I tried the smackin and cheese. UM yeah somebody needs to be smack for serving this cheese log with noodles. Again no flavor. I should've gone with my gut when I called to see if there were any specials and was told there is pulled pork brisket but now ribs oh yeah and sausage.l, because the restaurant is only open Wednesday-Sunday so they don't smoke ribs. WAIT WAIT WAIT! Im still workin on my smokin game but I know it takes less time to smoke ribs then a brisket. Sooooo once I tasted this flavorless brisket sandwich it made sense this brisket was warmed up from a tub that was in the walk in cooler. Cause ain't no way you opening a restaurant let alone a BBQ restaurant and omits first day of the week you don't have all the meats smoked and ready to hit ppls tummy. I swear if gas wasn't so dog gone high and I didn't live so far away I would've taken that food back and wouldn't even asked for my money back cause whomever prepared that food needs to go to big mommas house and pay her to teach them how to cook food with soul/love and some damn flavor. I'm to hurt to even talk about that banana parfait monstrosity's I'm done I'm going to get me a drank and go to bed hangry.

So this was my first time. After reading the reviews I still had slightly tough time finding the place but yes, as soon as I saw the HUGE bbq pit outside, it was undeniable that I found it. It was early Friday afternoon and the seats were already filling up with patrons making pilgrimage to enjoy the beer and bbq offerings - pork belly, smoked brisket, pulled pork, sausages! I ordered 1/4 lb of pork belly since I ordered their smoked brisket sandwich which cones with side of slaw! Service was so friendly, even got the new customer vibe extra pork belly! Thank you! And then when I was rung up, still was asked if everything was okay, with a wonderful smile! I went home (which was 35 minutes away , Friday afternoon traffic) and the pork belly was still warm and oh so yummy! It was a lot of food so am saving my smoked brisket sandwich for dinner! Definitely recommend this place and will definitely be back for more!

I had the most amazing experience at Bar-q restaurant located at Mariners Brewery in Ocean View, Norfolk. From the moment I stepped inside, I knew I was in for a treat. The aroma of slow-smoked meats filled the air, and the welcoming atmosphere was absolutely fantastic. The highlight of my meal was definitely the brisket - it was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy, with a rich smoky flavor that was out of this world. The sausage was another standout dish, with a homemade recipe that included delicious chunks of cheese and jalapeno for an extra kick of flavor. But the culinary delights didn't stop there. I also had the pleasure of trying their sweet potato cornbread, which was fluffy, moist, and had just the right amount of sweetness. Their collard greens were cooked to perfection, and quite possibly the best I've ever tasted. And their Mac and Cheese was a deliciously creamy side that complemented the other dishes perfectly. BBQ Joint in Norfolk Askins Family Write me a very ecstatic restaurant review about barbecue restaurant that serves their food at mariners brewery in ocean view Norfolk Virginia. It was a truly innovative take on a classic burger, and the meat was so flavorful and tender. Overall, I cannot recommend this barbecue restaurant enough. The food was simply fantastic, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service was top-notch. I'm already planning my next visit and can't wait to try more of their delicious offerings. If you're ever in Norfolk, do yourself a favor and stop by Bold Mariner Wednesday through Sunday for Bar-Q!!

I have been here several times to pick up food, but this was my first time actually going inside to order. The line was long around lunchtime, but it moved quickly. It is fast casual style, so you walk down the line choosing what you want and then pay at the register. I honestly had no idea that was how it worked before, so I was prepared to wait a while. I was pleasantly surprised at how efficient everything was. I was in and out much faster than expected. While putting my order together, the man helping me handed me a sample rib over the counter. I am a very socially awkward person and do not handle unexpected moments very gracefully, so I probably reacted a little awkwardly. That part was on me. The rib was GOOD though. He was very kind about my reaction and even handed me a napkin. The whole staff was friendly, asking how my week was going and checking in to make sure everyone was happy. Even though it was busy, they clearly care about customer service. The food was great. The garlic and green onion sausage had so much flavor, and the bananamisu was the perfect sweet finish. I originally went in hoping to order the BBQ oxtail, but they were sold out within two hours of opening, which honestly says a lot about how good they must be. I had also gone the day before around 7 PM and they had already closed because they were sold out for the day. Just a heads up that they do close early if they run out of food. To eat, we started with the Pork Rinds appetizer (10/10) they were definitely fresh and flavorful; I loved the sauce that came with them. I also ordered the Catfish basket (5/10) I was excited when this came to the table because it looked as though it would taste good and was a great portion size; however, it didn't meet my expectations at all. There was no flavor to the fish or batter and the Mac and cheese was very much the same way, bland. This is probably my 4th, or 5th visit since they opened over 6 years ago. The business is tucked away in a parking lot off I64 and North Hampton beside Chick Fil A. So you must snake around the lot. Once you arrive there is plenty of parking. I was immediately taken back by the amount of trash in the lot, especially one particular pile that looked freshly dumped. The footprint of this Mission is smaller than others, for that matter smaller than Virginia Beach around 8 miles away. The size seems correct for the amount of business they receive. I entered the store on a weekday around 12:30 PM. I noticed trash on their patio too! My instincts were to turn around and leave. I immediately alerted the manager of the trash. He was busy preparing a major catering order. He did not thank me, he did not utter a word. He rolled his eyes. I specifically came to Mission with it being National Peach Cobbler Day. I absolutely adore Missions peach cobbler. I ordered a pulled port lunch with green beans that comes with corn bread. I added a peach cobbler. I was not asked if military, which they provide a discount. They ALWAYS ask, first time they have not. So ok, no discount today. I respect the mission of the business to support military and first responders. The staff clearly did not want to be there, no smile no enthusiasm when I exclaimed it's National Peach Cobbler Day and yours rocks! This was the first time I've ever encountered staff at Mission like that. They were not busy, so I expected almost immediate turn around. Even when busy the Mission staff are like Ninjas. It comes out in minutes. So I waited. Order up, no smoke by staff #2. Or is it #3 because the manager sure never smiled. I found a seat. The dining room was pretty empty and clean. Dug into my lunch and the pulled pork is a favorite and was great! The green beans dry, the cornbread not edible and worse of all the peach cobbler not as good, the breading was dry. I asked another staff if they had fresh cornbread. Another staff brought out two center pieces, she was friendly but no apologies. It was still dry and not edible. This staff never did another check unfortunately. If she had I would have reported my overall dissatisfaction with the meal. Upon walking out I could not help myself. I began picking up trash on the patio with a nearby can to easily dispose of. What seemed obvious is this. They had more than enough staff. Their resources were being strained because a major catering order that had all hands on deck. It seemed apparent this was the priority. I did notice the like of trash was picked up, but nearby trash let untouched, that's just lazy! Later in the evening I got very sick, of course it's unknown why with having a dinner meal as a possible culprit too. So 50/50 chance its Mission. I will never return to the Norfolk Mission again and fully believe corporate needs to step in to thoroughly look into items I've outlined. I will continue to support Mission BBQ. Again this hurts to write. 1.5 rounding up because I can bring myself to a 1 star. I feel like I've been ripped off from $18+
