Quality day after sightseeing and visiting the museum so we decided we wanted a sweet treat. We found the Fudgery and thought we'd stop in. We thought they'd be making fudge and showing us the process of everything, but that wasn't the case. It was just a girl behind the counter, selling some sweet goodies. We ended up with a brick of fudge and three gourmet apples. And a turtle. My daughter absolutely loved her Brick of fudge and the gourmet apples were fresh, gooey, and tasty. I also bought a turtle pecan cluster. I didn't really care for it. The girl actually recommended it, but it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be. The caramel itself was kind of grainy and lacking. The place was clean. It was in another shop area. The girl working at the counter was friendly, helpful, and mentioned the caramel apple discount because we had bought so many. Which was sweet of her. I thought the place was closed. No one attending the front area. I stopped by a few days later, there were two people there. Both were rude. They acted as if there were better people to serve. A woman walked up to the fudge case area. The employee who I was talking to, abruptly left me and went to her. The other employee walked over to me as I was leaving. He asked me what I wanted. He claimed he couldn't hear me. I told my niece to tell him what she wanted. He said, "I assume you want one scoop." The other employee came back to the cash register, she rang it up. I paid. So today was my very first time truly stopping to check out this delightful spot. I enjoyed watching the fudge being spread and manipulated into tasty deserts. It really smelled heavenly. I also could decide on a juicy granny Smith dipped candy apple or a mouth watering chunky turtle. So yup you guessed it I got both. Decided against ice cream but I plan to come back and check out their cool frosty treats next time. Very friendly staff and also super helpful. I could not pass this up. I was inside for an event and realized they were still open. So I took a chance. Oooo they offer a military discount thank you for that. Review #248 - 2019 While walking around the Waterside District, my daughter needed to use the restroom so we decided to head inside and see if there was anything interesting. Of course, how can a child refuse ice cream? Even as an adult, I'm always tempted to go get some. My daughter really likes chocolate and peanut butter so I got her a scoop of the chocolate peanut butter. I also thought the strawberry cheesecake was pretty good, since she likes strawberry as well. Unfortunately, you can't get two flavors in the regular size cup so I upgraded to the large to get two flavors. I opted for just one scoop of each because I didn't want my daughter to have too much sugar before we went back home for dinner. I ended up getting her the dipped marshmallow with M&M's for later, which she ended up hating so it was a good and a bad thing. Good thing that she didn't have the extra sugar, but bad that I wasted my money. I was also convinced by my girlfriend to get the dark chocolate fudge to take home for my hubby, which was extremely sweet so he has been eating one small bite after dinner every night. Poor guy! I'm not a sweets person, but I definitely loved the fudge in The Fudgery. It was also my first time trying a fudge. With our fingers crossed, my boyfriend from Michigan, who has indulged in fudge shops from Mackinac, was hoping to find a fudge shop in Norfolk. A quick search in Google Maps and The Fudgery was the first find. The Fudgery is located in the water district inside a huge building that is food-court-like with a mix of bars and stalls/restaurants that serve great food. There is parking beside the building, but you'd have to pay a parking fee. The staff selling the fudge were very enthusiastic and actually allowed us to sample as much fudge as we wanted, in which they had a couple different types: cookies & cream, dark chocolate, rocky road, butterfinger, chocolate peanut butter, and more. The lady taking care of us gave us a 15% discount on the fudge we bought because of my partner having served in the military. However, the price of the fudges are up there. Instead of being able to buy smaller blocks of the fudge, you are limited to purchasing half a pound, which was an entire slice of fudge. That costed about ~$9 for one fudge without the discount, but the taste is great and definitely worth it especially if you have a sweet tooth! read more

Because it existed years ago and did so well, looks like the owner saw fit to bring them back and I'm all for it! The employees here are filled with so much energy!! It's like their happiness is contagious and I love it! More sweets and great ice cream are located here! I had warm waffle cone filled with two scoops of butter pecan ice cream and it was so so good it was a little bit rich so I was able to share it with my mother, but the more I ate the more I wanted it all to myself! But if ice cream isn't your thing they have plently other goodness to choose from! I'm looking forward to returning very soon. Other sweets include: candy apples, pretzels and different types of chocolate etc. just go! The fudge smells oh so good and to even add more Pizzazz the staff there sings every now and then as they're making the fudge. Everything is laid out in the open for you to see and it's just a fun time. The marketplace features several bars other eateries and plenty of open seating if you wish to sit and just enjoy the sights and sounds of the atmosphere. Parking not an issue. You can choose: valet parking, meter parking or garage parking. And if you're across the water...to avoid the traffic and tolls...pay a low fare by taking the ferry from Portsmouth and cruise on over. The marketplace also known as Waterside sits on the Elizabeth River. So keep in mind seating is outside as well or take a scroll through TownPoint Park with awesome views of the river...while you enjoy your ice cream! We were there on the 4th of July so of course it was busy. There was a very long line on both sides for the ice cream and fudge. We stood in the line for about 20 minutes and when we got up to the counter the lights turned off and man came around covering the ice cream telling the ladies not to do certain things. All the ladies behind the counter were super friendly and had great customer service that was so appreciated due to the man that was obviously upset, I think they had to make up for his actions. He not only turned off the lights but started removing everything off the counter, spoons, napkins etc. The ladies had to remove the covers off the ice cream to continue serving the customer's in line. I gave 3 stars due to the ladies working there but a chat should definitely happen with the one man on the shift, who I think may have even been the manager. read more

The Fudgery at Waterside is a resurrected concept, that I'm really glad was bought back to life. Ever since I was a little boy I've loved me a good candy shop. It's perfectly located at the front of the new Waterside District so you can smell the chocolately goodness before you even walk in. They have one side for serving ice cream, and one side that serves fudge and fudge dipped treats (marshmallows, rice krispie treats, etc.) I bought a piece of cookies and cream fudge, and a cookies and cream dipped marshmallow and they were everything! The employess were really friendly and eager to serve everybody fudge. What I would like to see in the near future are fudge dipped / caramel apples, and for them to do something more exciting with their ice cream besides just regular scoops; something that incorperates their fresh made fudge (milkshakes, sundaes, etc). Delicious sweets are usually on everyone's "must have" list and fudge doubly so. As we were looking over their flavors, Kate came by to see if we had any questions. Bubbly and energetic, she convinced us to stick around for her fudge making demonstration. It was spectacular. There was laughing, corny Dad jokes, and even fantastic singing (she's got some pipes). Her arm strength alone was impressive, working that giant metal spatula was intense, but the fudge she produce was phenomenal. I don't remember the last time I had this much fun watching candy get made. If you hadn't guessed already, we had such a good time that we left there with 3 pounds of mouthwatering fudge. Welcome back to the Waterside now the Market at the Waterside. This place screamed pleasant memories for when I was a kid in the 80s I remember when the employees would make fudge and sing. It made me so happy to see this place survive after all these years. They had rows of sweet candied apples, dallops of fudge nestled in flavors, and around the corner 3 ice cream cases. I have been visiting the Fudgery since it first opened in Waterside a few decades ago. It's appeal is still there for the younger kids, but it is no longer remotely affordable. Just take a look at the prices. Toffee is $25/pound. It is $5 for a rice crispy treat, and fudge is $18/pound. I am not a fan of high prices of diabetes, so I guess I will pass on the Fudgery from now on. read more
