This place gets BUSY! I met a friend for lunch, her suggestion, as a good place to catch up. She said she normally gets some work done there. There were several groups meeting during our visit, around 10am, one of which seemed like a small book club or something. It was cool, but seemed it could be a bit distracting for a working coffee shop vibe. They serve breakfast and lunch. As she frequents here, she challenged the menu, which said no breakfast after 10/1030, and sure enough they said breakfast was served all day. She ordered a breakfast sandwich and I opted to get the chicken salad lunch sandwich. It was different than what I'd say traditional chicken salad would be served as, but it was okay, just unexpected. I got a smoothie for my drink. It was fresh and good. My only gripe is that it was very pricey for what you get. Between our two meals and drinks it was over $60 which is wild for brunch in a cafe style coffee shop. read more

Love this place. A writing group I belong to writes here every other week. It is often busy and loud, but there are lots of places to sit and get work done. One the minus side - this place ran out of the milk I'd asked for, the didn't have the flavored tea I chose second, finally I just got a water. The brownies were hard so I passed on them... wasn't thrilled with experience. Or for the service, the employee said with an uninterested tone, that they had a new supplier and that's why they didn't have some items. Not stellar management in my opinion. Plus side - Loved the patio, It's a nice rustic, cool vibe. My friend and I were able to chat with little distractions. Love the set up of this place. It is ideal for WFH or for meeting up with a friend. They offer seasonal selections, as well as gluten free, dairy free, and vegetarian friendly options. I spent $7 on a latte only to sit there for 45 minutes to wait for the Internet to start working and it didn't work. Also, the food is mediocre at best and not only does the Internet not work, but there is like zero cell coverage for my provider at least (which is AT&T) in the place. I would not recommend this if you need to come to a coffee shop to do work, but the aesthetic is cute and the people are nice so if you're just coming to chat with friends and have a coffee... I stopped in for an afternoon coffee, but the one from the thermos wasn't hot. The staff member tried to reheat it, but when I went to add sugar, it was still just warm with no steam. I asked for a refund since hot coffee should actually be hot. The staff was kind and refunded me, but no one offered to brew a fresh cup. I was told they usually make a fresh pot around 1:00 pm, depending on how busy they are. Since they didn't offer, I didn't ask. With other coffee options nearby in Midlothian Village, I wouldn't go out of my way to return. read more

First time at Urban Farmhouse and it was great. Fresh juices, variety of menu options, great ambiance and a sweet little shop. Impressed by the gluten free offerings as well. Order at a counter and they call you when your order is ready. Pretty speedy! We ordered iced chai- very spicy, not sweet enough for my sweet tooth! Drop the beat juice- carrot, beet, orange juice. Actually delicious (very beet forward) Cappuccino- good, but unique froth. Can match the quality at home. We ordered the avocado toast with winter slaw, avocado was fresh and delicious seasoned well with a very high quality olive oil. The slaw was not my favorite as I am not a fan of apple. But other wise good! Also ordered a bacon and egg sandwich- with Richmond bacon and cage free eggs. Came with fresh fruit! Very big, can definitely split! A little pricey but fresh food! All of the staff is really nice, but the service can be a little slow at times (I think they're understaffed for how busy it can get). Upon entering this place, I wasn't sure what it wanted to be. There is counter services like Panera where you go up and order and wait for your food. You COULD sit down in the dining room, but if you do, they will literally yell for you, so... So, it seems a bit cafeteria-like. Then there is the high priced coffee and juice, so it's kind of like a coffee house or juice bar. Then there is the very quaint, eclectic dining area. It's airy with high ceilings and lots of windows, but the acoustics are LOUD. It's not a great spot to chat because you can't hear each other over the noise. But, it's a restaurant, right? You want to know about the food. Well, it's disappointing. I ordered the cucumber feta salad. There was no feta on it. I wondered if they gave me the wrong salad. Nope. They just threw some feta on it and called it a day. It wasn't plentiful. It was very ordinary. The feta was fresh and good, but there wasn't much of it. Overall, I found it overpriced and not a great dining experience. The three stars are for the clean bathrooms and the quaint atmosphere. Parking could be a problem, too on a busy day. read more

For some reason, this part of the RVA lacks good options for coffeehouses. There's always Starbucks or Panera handy, but a good, cozy, warm coffeehouse is a rare find. Urban Farmhouse hits a home run in this regard. It's got a great selection of food options. Not as many in coffees, but the coffees they have are excellent. They offer (seasonal) indoor or outdoor seating options, which is always a appreciated. And the staff is helpful and willing to do the best they can with special requests. I'm deducting one star because they kinda messed up our orders so one of us got her breakfast while one of us waited. And waited. And waited.... But eventually it got sorted and, while it would have been nice to dine together, both dishes were tasty and satisfying. Next time I visit family in the area I'll be back and let's see if they can earn that fifth star. read more

Very underwhelmed. I went for lunch with my friend who is vegan. I was hopeful they would have a good option for both of us. I ordered the BLTVA. The menu made it sound so delightful with lemon mayo and Hanover tomatoes. Im regretting not taking a photo or asking for more tomatoes, but my sandwich had a tomato slice the size of a half dollar on one side and two small slices like that on the other. And there was no mayo which I forgot was on it until I had eaten half of it. Very disappointing. The sandwich was $12 and definitely not worth more than $4. My friend said her avocado toast was okay. Not very good for $9. Also they ran out of 9 grain bread by 11:30am on a Sunday. Parking was okay. Staff was very nice. It was a little loud, but not too bad. The first table we sat at was wobbly. there is a beautiful outdoor area to sit at. I will say I probably won't be back, unless I'm guaranteed more bang for my buck! read more

My first visit here and it was AMAZING!! I had heard so many amazing things and this place was so cute and the food was delicious! I got the veggie sausage & egg sandwich was so good, the bread was so perfectly toasted :) and the dish came with fresh fruit which was so perfect on a hot summer day!! Went for lunch my gluten free adult daughter and the food was ok. Had a cuban sandwich with fruit on the side and it was fine, nothing too exciting. The fruit seemed fresh, half an apple and some grapes. Daughter had a sandwich too, she appreciates gluten free options. The service as prompt, not overly friendly or overly knowledgeable but they did work to find the answer to the question if the black bean soup was gluten free (it is). I was a little nervous to try them because of the not so great reviews, but I thought let's give it a try. I was utterly underwhelmed and disappointed. The service is slow. They quietly call out names and don't seek to find the customers if people don't respond. I ordered a toffee latte and the coffee was absolutely awful. I also ordered the egg and havarti sandwich and it was super tasteless. My mom ordered a juice that sat out for 20 minutes because they did not call her name. They only thing that we ordered that was somewhat edible was the bread. Even that came a little burnt. Do yourself a favor and try somewhere else. read more

It's a really cool spot open probably about 15 to 20 years ago I think in the middle of Shockoe Slip I& was quite literally the first place to offer vegetarian and health selections. When I was there, the service was self-serve sort of like a Panera type but much much more upscale it's a fun atmosphere. The food is great. Swung by here for a quick afternoon lunch, not once, but TWICE this Labor Day weekend. The first time for a quick bite after my morning workout and the BLVAT with chips and an Honest Green Tea were much more satisfying than my previous experience. The ingredients on my sandwich were VERY light, though. Not sure it was worth the price paid. I will say though, I tried my boyfriend's Cubano sandwich and OMG -- I had food envy BAD. Hence why we went back a second time. I just had to have my own Cubano. The Chai Tea Latte I had was okay too. I will be back. Idk why i came back here for breakfast, I paid $10+ for a sandwich that has hardly any bacon on it, no sauce/flavor or salt at all, no cheese. literally just a bagel with bacon and egg. their breakfast options for sandwiches are the plainest you can get. unless you want to spend even more to add something to make it normal. I went there this weekend with someone handsome. It was my first time there and I liked the cleanliness and I felt safe. The servers bring out your drink if there are more than one of you or if it takes a little while. I think it is to avoid people waiting close together? That's a good idea. Urban Farmhouse used to be my go to cafe. I love that they use fresh, local ingredients and have lots of healthy options. The ambience here is really nice. It has big windows that let in the sun so it's a lovely place to catch up with friends or get some work done. The menu changes seasonally and reflects ingredients that are in season. I appreciate that local, organic ingredients are more expensive, so you'll notice that in their prices. A grilled cheese with a side of fruit (3 slices of pear and 4 halved grapes) with a cup of hot tea cost me over $11.00. Portion sizes are relatively small for the price that you pay, so I have started skipping out on meals here in favor of enjoying their drinks. There's a pretty expansive selection of vegetarian and vegan options and they can cater to gluten sensitivities too. I was really surprised to see that substituting for soy milk in your drink will cost you $0.85 - quite a bit more than other local cafes! I enjoy hunkering down here to work, but with the prices getting higher and the portions getting smaller, I don't think I'll be stopping in quite as often as I used to. read more

Cute place but the concept and design need to be reworked. You order your food at the counter and then your name is SCREAMED when your items are ready so you can go back and pick them up. Our lattes were ready before our food (I finished mine before I got my breakfast) so we had to make multiple trips up to the counter. The layout does not make this any easier. I felt like I was dodging people and tables the entire time. They really should just have someone bring it to the table for you. As I mentioned before, the food is SLOW. If I hadn't already paid $15 for my meal I would have just left to be honest. I had the veggie sausage and egg sandwich which was yummy but would have been better without the wait. Aside from the whole thing being a cluster, the decor is cute and the food is fresh.
