Upper Crust is a Fabulous Bakery but not the greatest restaurant.. I use them frequently and they are my first and only choice for specialty occassion cakes and cupcakes. They made my wedding cake at an extremely reasonable price for gourmet flavors and fillings and did not charge extra for decorating it. They made gourmet flavored filled cupcakes for aprty we had and I had to spend most of the evening telling everyone where I got them and writing down their telephone number and they were boxed well for travel and extremely reasonably priced. I have grabbed a quiche to go on several occassions and it has always been excellent no matter which flavor. Other than dealing with those who handle the special orders by phone and in person, the staff is odd at best. The special order folks are fantastic in every way. Nice, attentive, detail oriented, informative and seemingly genuinely interested in helping you and doing a good job. The counter staff tends to be spacy, disinterested in serving you, and sometimes borderline rude. But since I usually only deal with them on pick up it can be tolerated read more

The quality of the coffee and croissant I had at the Upper Crust Bakery was acceptable (not wonderful, but perfectly acceptable for this type of establishment). The service I received was reprehensible. In my 56 years on this planet, I have traveled to many places and have had the good and bad fortune to experience the best and worst of many eateries. This bakery now resides in my top five (possibly even my top three) most terrible customer service experiences ever. The staff was rude, surly, curt, inept (the woman who waited on me gave me the wrong change, in my favor, two times and got angry when I handed back the extra). The staff is just plain angry (how dare I actually want to order coffee & croissant?). It just oozes out of every person on the staff, and smacks everyone standing in line right in the face. I picked up lunch today and when I got back to my office, I saw that my order was completely wrong (obviously a mix-up with somebody else's). I called and was immediately put through to a manager, who apologized, and offered to walk the correct order over to my office downtown. I happily agreed and within 15 minutes, I had the right lunch. I got to my desk and opened the bag to find that they had even given me a complimentary dessert to make up for the inconvenience. In the past I wrote a review on my birthday cake. It wasn't a great experience at first, but I have to say the owner went above and beyond any other business in order to make it right. I recently went in and ordered several things including a super yummy tuna-dill sandwich. Note: I hate dill.. big Oh-NO! But this sandwhich was REALLY GOOD!! It wasn't all full of mayo and runny it was just right! I also ordered a ton of cookies.. I have to say my daughter is in love with the fudgies. and I loved the peanut butter chocolate chip ones! I also ate.. (( This is what happens when I skip breakfast and im starving apparently I eat everything. )) a lemon coconut bar and it had the best flavor out of anything I think I have ever tasted. The crust was so buttery and delicious. I can not wait to go back and get more of them! I just hope they make them on a daily basis. They also had some cupcakes which looked really yummy but I just wouldnt have been able to stuff them in my piehole. :) I have to say this is the BEST bakery in Chico. and if its not to you, try it again. It was hard to narrow down a choice out of their delicious options. I decided to go with the curry egg salad sandwich on honey oat bread, which was their special of the day. It was delicious! The bread was sweet and fluffy and the egg salad was very flavorful. I opted for the black bean chili for my side and again, was not disappointed. I will be attempting to recreate this one at home! They swirl sour cream and pesto on top which really takes the chili up a level. I also fully recommend getting their seasonal apple cider steamer. I ordered a lemon pie here and while I was in picked up some additional desserts. My family loved the treats. My first impression is decent. (Keep in mind that "decent" for me in Chico probably counts as five stars for the rest of you. So if you are not an out-of-the-area, homesick snob like me, you'll probably rave like everyone else.) The ham and cheese danish was an oily concoction with a sinewy roll of ham in the middle. They are surely better fresh, but when I ordered it at 8:30am on a Saturday, it was microwaved before it was served to me. The pecan sticky bun was alright. The"sticky" part was threatening to pull out our teeth. I like a bit more subtlety to my pastries. The chocolate croissant was very close to being excellent. It had just the right amount of bittersweet chocolate, and had it not been slightly on the tough side I would have given Upper Crust one more star. Definitely more of an American style bakery than French - they shouldn't be attempting croissants, in my opinion. My trip to Upper Crust is going to make me take a closer look at Tin Roof. The fresh squeezed OJ was lovely, and the espresso wasn't half bad. We visited early on Saturday morning, before any hungover CSU students had hit the streets. I must say, that is the only way to enjoy downtown Chico! The Upper Crust was quiet, the staff was friendly, and I will definitely go back to try some more of their offerings. Found my new spot to indulge in pastries! Everything we ordered was so good. The ham and swiss danish was so buttery and flaky and perfect. The southwestern quiche made my taste buds so happy! The clam chowder was also good, they add bacon in it which is a nice little touch. When I ordered lemonade, I was expecting Minute Maid but instead I got it freshly squeezed! The fudgie cookie with walnuts is so yummy! The cookie is so soft and the perfect size! My little one was in line to buy a fudgie and one of the workers bought it for her. I always try to get an upper crust cake for my mom or dad's birthday because they are so moist and tasty and they have a good variety. My sister and I love this place, we go back for lunch on saturdays, we get the little side dishes, their armenian sandwiches is a nice light sandwich. On a cold day, their black bean chili is to die for, they add pesto and sour cream with a side of the corn bread... oh my god... my mouth is watering thinking about it. You're right though, the services is a little off, you never know who is next in line. This is one of my favorite places in downtown, Chico. As a student I spent many days using the free internet and ample table space to study. The chocolate mousse bar (with a big glass of milk) is a sin that everybody should try at least once in their lives. The pasta salads are fantastic and the soups are healthy and nourishing. The food is great when it's made the day of, but that's not always the case. The best way buy cookies is to look on the cooling rack behind the counter to see what's the freshest. Service is a little surly at times, but with the customers they get, I can understand the frustration. So I special ordered a cherry pie for a friends birthday. On my way picking it up I called in advance to request they cut it in half and put it in two separate boxes. The man I spoke to said no problem. I told him I would be there in 20 minutes to pick it up. I arrived twenty minutes later and waited in line to tell them I was there to pick it up. Of course it wasn't ready and the man I spoke to on the phone didn't have the pie split and boxed as I called to request so now I got to wait some more while this was done. The girl that was pretending to help me in line didn't offer an apology or explanation when I told her what was going on. I got the blank deer in the headlights stare I am so fond of when I have made my wishes known in advance. They looked at me like I was being unreasonable because they aren't the specific person who dropped the ball. About 10 minutes later they still haven't brought the pie up front or told me anything about the progress so I inquired, again. This time I was told she was sure it was almost ready and that she would go back and check in a few minutes. All the while I am holding up people in line behind me because there's nowhere else to stand. Finally, about 5 minutes later, the snotty young girl with the tattoos came out with three different containers instead of two and proceeded to try to hand them over to me over the coffee bar. Needless to say, one of them slid off the top and dropped in the floor. She picked the brown cardboard container up and handed it to without even acknowledging the fact that my special ordered cherry pie probably wasn't going to make a very nice birthday gift after it fell in the floor. I opened the box up and saw that it was obviously, unpresentable. I was so angry I walked out and didn't stay to discuss the many things that I was so upset about at this point. For starters, why was the pie cut into six pieces when I asked you to cut it in half? And why wasn't it put into two separate containers instead of three? And why wasn't this taken care of before I got there? And why didn't you even acknowledge you dropped it in the floor? The list actually goes on and on... it's not what I would expect from a bakery on a special order or any other kind of order honestly. The attitude and offering ZERO explanation or apology is unacceptable. I am a regular and have been ordering custom cakes from you guys for decades. Which actually brings up another point that is somewhat irritating to me. Whenever I order something from you (which is about 8 or more times a year) I treated like it's my first order with you guys. I have to give you all my information each time and I am never made to feel like I am a valued customer because you guys don't keep any information on me. If you had a reference of what my previous orders were you would know that I'm a good customer, which events I ordered which cakes for etc. instead, every time I custom order a cake it's like starting the whole thing over each time. As a good customer I would like you to be able to look up the cake I ordered the previous May for my Moms birthday instead of a twenty minute phone call trying to figure out of it was the buttercream or whip cream frosting, 9 or 10 inch round, fudge or milk chocolate etc.. by you not keeping a record I am not made to feel like a special or valued customer. Dominos pizza keeps better track of who I am with my phone number they can tell me what my previous order was and what address they delivered it to. You could actually learn some customer appreciation practices from them. You are not shy about the prices you charge for your cakes and then an additional 10 dollar delivery charge on top of it. The very least you could do is make your customers feel appreciated and acknowledge your frequent flyers and repeat business. You could even go so far as to snap a picture of a custom cake and be able to refer back to it at a later date. I went through a polka dot stage and ordered a big square cake with fondant polka dots and it looked like a big birthday package wrapped with a bow and polka dots on it. I liked it so much I then had another one done for a friends baby shower. It was super cute! A little customer appreciation goes a long way. You guys are lacking. I don't want to be treated like I don't matter when I'm giving you all my business. That's all. Is that too much to ask? I heard this was the best bakery in town, and when I went on their website to get birthday cake ideas for my boyfriend I was sure they could tackle my custom cake request. I wanted the cake to look like a beer can, well they couldn't do it, so they just did a regular round cake to look like the top half of a can, they assured me it would look great. I picked it up and it was awful! I thought the decorating would look much more professional! it was all piped on! I could have done the same thing! Although I have not had the pleasure of actually visiting the bakery or eating there since I live in the Bay Area (hence the 3 instead of 5 stars) I did have the great pleasure of eating a cake that my cousin bought there for my moms birthday. My mom requested a pink champagne cake (also known as a pink chantilly cake). I figured since such an old style of cake no one would have. Well my cousin who lives in Chico happened upon Upper Crust, she called to see if they could create the cake and they said no problem. The cake was beautiful. They used various shades of lavender (my moms fav color) to create a spray of flowers on the cake. The frosting was whipped cream (which I usually don't like), and it was delicious. The cake was moist and soft and so flavorful. The strawberry filling wasn't too sweet so it didn't over power the cake. All in all a fantastic cake both visually and taste. I know my cousin said Upper Crust will no be her go to bakery and next time I'm up visiting I will be stopping by. read more
