Hands down no hesitation- The desserts have been perfected here. The vanilla cake is single handedly THEE best white cake I have ever had in my life. Artisanal is not toss a bunch of random things together and attach a hefty price tag. That's for sure. I had the black bean soup. I loved the cilantro pesto. What an interesting place! Everywhere you look, there is something to see. I was taking pictures of nearly everything but the dining area, which had walls decorated with what looked like student artwork. Large space with lots of tables. I only came in for a latte, but seeing the pastries, went ahead and ordered a sticky bun. Staff was friendly and the barista took the time to make some foam art before putting a lid on it. Such a disappointment today. I happened to be in the area and was craving something sweet. Found a great parking spot right in front. I've been coming to Upper Crust Bakery for the past two years, and their pastries never disappoint. The lemon blueberry scone with glaze on top is hands-down one of my all-time favorites. Their breakfast quesadillas and sandwiches are awesome, especially with that spicy aioli--so good. The coffee is okay, in my humble opinion there is room for improvement on the quality of coffee, but the food shines. Service is always pleasant and friendly. I have been coming here since I was a kid, so yeah about 35 years ago. It hasn't changed, except gotten a little better or so I can appreciate now as an adult. It is essentially a coffee shop with a great bakers as well as lunch items and wonderful things you can get to go! Coffee here is a good start they can make all the fancy stuff, lattes, Mexican Mocha's, options. The bakery part is great. People have been enjoying the croissants, I prefer the chocolate. The cookies are amazing and they have a new option called Lemon cookies that are to-die-for! I also am a fan of the snickerdoodle. Cake orders here are a good way to go if there are any special upcoming events. You can also just order a slice. The sandwiches are a good option. French style. Great bread. I have been here several times and have noticed a few things that can be improved and a few things that are working well. The ham and swiss croissant is very good, with a buttery taste to it and melts in your mouth. I have heard good things about the coffee and am looking forward to trying the Mexican mocha. However, each time I come here to the tables, none of them have been wiped down or cleaned, with crumbs and food residue left over. Please make the environment more clean and hygienic for customers. My daughter ordered a gender reveal cake for her gender reveal party. She had her OBGYN calling the sex of the baby and my daughter went and picked the cake up. The cake was not supposed to show whether it was a boy or a girl until it was cut open at the party when my daughter got the cake home and opened the box It had blue smeared all over the top and blue sprinkles showing from the bottom totally ruining her gender reveal surprise. I opted for pleasing my sweet tooth and got a half dipped macaroon. From the cabinet where it was staring at me, it looked large, and perfect however, after my first bite I realized what a mistake I'd made. It was dry as the desert and beyond bland. The chocolate dipped side did me no favors, the entire thing was BLAH. When I saw it in the case, I fantasized biting through an exterior crunch into a super moist coco-nutty freshness but man was I wrong! One word to describe it: Blech! Haha. No but really, it was the worst macaroon I've ever had. Now, that's not to say other goodies they sell suck, because I know some of the food/sweets they sell are yummy. I just haven't been to this bakery for about 10 years and back in the day, they used to be one of my fav places to grab a quick snack. Maybe the macaroon was days old? Love this place!! I come at least once a week, mainly for the pleasant ambience, but the exciting monthly soup calendar (they have a different soup every day of the month) and delicious turkey chili on Tuesday makes it such a fun experience. The bakery window is also wonderful. My favorite sweet treat is probably the apple tart, which is a perfect synergy of baked apple and shortbread. I decided to write my review today because I received such nice service from Tatum - she was quick, friendly, and gave me a great drink recommendation. When I asked about the sugar content, she checked it for me, and then made my drink with the modifications I requested. My husband and I were driving through Chico and stopped here for lunch as it was notably featured on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. If it was good enough for Guy Fieri, we thought it would be worth checking out. Plus, we had our dog with us and dogs are welcomed in their outside eating area at the front of the building. I ordered what Guy had, the Black Bean Chili with a Jalapeño Cheddar Corn Muffin. I have to say, I found the chili much too thick, like "hold your spoon upside down and it doesn't fall" thick. And while I found it a bit bland, I did like the added pesto drizzle on top. My favorite part of the meal was the yummy corn muffin! My husband had the UC Tuna Melt, which is topped with melted cheddar cheese. LOTS of melted cheddar cheese (too much for my husband - he left a pile of folded cheese behind on his plate). I'm a Chico native, attended Chico State and it was during those university years when I really got to frequent this place before, in between and after classes. It's not far from the campus which allowed me plenty of time to make a quick stop, grab something tasty and return to my classes in time. I'm no longer a Chico State student. I graduated, entered the job world and now I'm an actual adult. However I come here every now and then when I'm in the area. Time for my review! The bakery, I'd say, is of medium size. You can go in, choose whatever treat, savory or sweet, draws you in, pay for it, then go and sit down and enjoy it while looking out the window, enjoying some of the downtown scenery, or even sit outside if you'd like. Now when choosing your treat, be wise as they can be on the pricey side and there are so many delicious things, you'll end up buying too many of them. I've done that several times! But everything here, in my experience, passes the delicious taste test. They have sandwiches, soups, salads and the sweet stuff, of course: cakes, cupcakes, macarons, brownies, etc. My mouth is watering already! But what I especially love about this place, especially during the holidays, which is when I'm writing this review, is their made-to-order desserts.
