My husband and I were driving through Chico and stopped here for lunch as it was notably featured on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. If it was good enough for Guy Fieri, we thought it would be worth checking out. Plus, we had our dog with us and dogs are welcomed in their outside eating area at the front of the building. I ordered what Guy had, the Black Bean Chili with a Jalapeño Cheddar Corn Muffin. I have to say, I found the chili much too thick, like "hold your spoon upside down and it doesn't fall" thick. And while I found it a bit bland, I did like the added pesto drizzle on top. My favorite part of the meal was the yummy corn muffin! My husband had the UC Tuna Melt, which is topped with melted cheddar cheese. LOTS of melted cheddar cheese (too much for my husband - he left a pile of folded cheese behind on his plate). He had a cup of minestrone soup with his sandwich, which he liked very much. I regret not trying any of their delicious-looking pastries. Maybe next time. read more

I'm a Chico native, attended Chico State and it was during those university years when I really got to frequent this place before, in between and after classes. It's not far from the campus which allowed me plenty of time to make a quick stop, grab something tasty and return to my classes in time. I'm no longer a Chico State student. I graduated, entered the job world and now I'm an actual adult. However I come here every now and then when I'm in the area. Time for my review! The bakery, I'd say, is of medium size. You can go in, choose whatever treat, savory or sweet, draws you in, pay for it, then go and sit down and enjoy it while looking out the window, enjoying some of the downtown scenery, or even sit outside if you'd like. Now when choosing your treat, be wise as they can be on the pricey side and there are so many delicious things, you'll end up buying too many of them. I've done that several times! But everything here, in my experience, passes the delicious taste test. They have sandwiches, soups, salads and the sweet stuff, of course: cakes, cupcakes, macarons, brownies, etc. My mouth is watering already! But what I especially love about this place, especially during the holidays, which is when I'm writing this review, is their made-to-order desserts. For any celebration going on, I go here and order one of their cakes and have yet to be disappointed. For example, last year I ordered the chocolate mousse cake. It was incredibly good! Slow and unorganized service. I ordered a pastry when there was only one other customer in line and very few people in the bakery and it took them fifteen minutes to get it saying they would bring it out to me. The help was busy socializing with one another and I had to go up to the counter to ask for it. Pastries see over priced for the quality, over sweet and doughy. Tables inside bakery were wood with a sticky residue on them. Wall color is a sickly pale mustard beige color that looks dowdy and dirty. read more

This is one of those bakeries where everything looks so good you want to order one of each. We came here looking for gingersnaps because Sis says they are the best she's ever had. Unfortunately they were out, signifying that lots of folks agree. Sis ended up with a snickerdoodle cookie and I had shortbread. We also had coffee. The atmosphere is calm and casual, but we got ours to take way. Sis liked her cookie but didn't rave about it like she did the gingersnaps. I thought the shortbread was excellent-- thick and buttery just like it's supposed to be. The coffee was pretty standard. You can imagine they have about 50 different ones that you can pick from my favorite is the cookie that has a thick coating of frosting on top along with their quiches. The pastry was too sweet in my opinion. Wouldn't get again. 1/5 BlackBerry mini tart- the pastry shell is again too sweetened in my opinion but I liked the content. 3/5 Vanilla macaron, Orange macaron, Strawberry macaron: I feel like we are sacrificing perfect macarons for size here. The inner creams are too sweet , and too thin consistency for such sweet shells and the shells are lumpy. I took one bite of each, not bad but I probably won't try again unless I see the normal 1" size. 2/5 stars Lemon poppyseed slice: bread consistency is perfect, perfect amount of poppyseeds. Love the lemon in the drizzle but I find the drizzle overly sweet- so prefer a bite without it. 4/5 Banana nut bread slice: little bit dry, ironically not sweet enough or soft enough. 3/5 Orange cranberry scone: STAR of the show! THANK YOU for putting in a good amount of perfect and juicy cranberries. The orange is fabulous in here. It is perfectly soft on the inside. No notes! 5/5 Iced chai latte- surprisingly not sweet enough, at least in comparison to Starbucks but not bad. Service is always great here, can't wait to come back and try more things! Had a lovely birthday lunch for some friends today. I had the special Philly cheesesteak with tomato rosemary soup. That was what four of us had. One for hers with the elote corn salad. Another had the grilled cheese with tomatoes on focaccia and finally the turkey sandwich. All divine! We ended with a delicious homemade lemon blueberry cheesecake and cookies from the Cookie Shoppe. Great food, pleasantambience, except....why am I hearing Bing Crosby crooning "Silver Bells" in May? What's up with that?

This place is one of the fancier and well-known bakeries in Chico. Unfortunately the owner doesn't take very good care of the employees. Bakers earn $18 to $20 hourly with no tips and no benefits, and baristas earn less hourly. Even with full-time hours, it's not a livable wage on its own. Seems like the owner has set up the company structure expecting mainly college employees with a high turnover rate. Also seems that the location maybe an issue due to limited size and presumably high overhead, restricting company and employee growth. read more

This is a great bakery in downtown Chico, a go-to breakfast place for us. Pastries are excellent, with a nice range. We recently had their pumpkin danish, which was excellent, with a nice real pumpkin flavour, very gentle on the "pumpkin pie" spices, and nicely mixed with what seemed like perhaps cream cheese. The spices could easily have overpowered it, and people often make "pumpkin" things taste just like a bunch of pumpkin pie spices, which is not the point. This balanced all wonderfully. Other danishes are always great. Coffee is great. Service is excellent and friendly every time. Ambience is good. The place is nice and attractive. There is some covered patio seating in front, which is nice, plus a larger eating area in back. The inside can get a bit crowded and loud at times, though. There is a small amount of seating out front on the sidewalk. read more

Very disappointed I'm this morning and last few visits. Ever since the change in management. This morning I spent 19.90 for breakfast sandwich with bacon bought a sweet treat - as no cream cheese pastry. AGAIN . When they do it's flavored Ugg and so while waiting I was told breakfast ended 10 minutes ago. I came for the sandwich! I said hey, 10 minutes? There's no sign on the menu! But tough luck . Additionally , the butter for the pastries is always hard as a rock! I tried dipping it paper on - in my coffee. Just can't spend the butter when it's so hard . I have been coming here for a very very long time probably send the 90s. The old manager was so much more friendly compliant made all kinds of wonderful treats. They've changed up this menu and the staff really don't give a shit. read more

Only got bakery items & they were all mid. Nothing blew us away. Lots of seating inside. Workers were nice. Chocolate dipped macaroon was hard but tasted good. The peanut butter cookie was hard & dusty, not much peanut butter flavor. Snickerdoodle was burnt tasting on the bottom but cookie was soft. Sugar cookie was hard. So Uppercrust Bakery is my favorite bakery but recently when going in I was being helped by some girl who was in a hurry to get us out. Nobody else was in there so idk why. We spent about $30 on desserts to bring home. Not one of us said we were done and ready to pay for things but she made the decision to be done. I just think it's rude and she didn't seem friendly she seemed like she was annoyed of everyone and everything. I used to avoid Upper Crust. Under the old management, staff were... well, rude. And it wasn't a one-off experience. Under new management, I'm very happy to go there. Staff are friendly, helpful, and go out of their way to provide great service. I've ordered two (vegan) cakes in the last year; one of them I had many questions on due to my friend's food allergies. Staff took it seriously and made sure to provide as much information on prep methods as they could. Oh, and the cakes were delicious! Keep the vegan cold salads and baked goods coming! This place is fantastic minus one major complaint - they heat up with a microwave and thier wonderful quiches crusts are never crispy always soft and I am always disappointed how they could make such a great product but blow it when they serve it in house. Also microwave ruins the amazing spinach cheese croissants- makes them deflated and soggy and too hot to eat . How can this place not use a convection oven or super speed toaster! My husband and I frequent Upper Crust and wanted to introduce our grand daughter to the wonderful yummies. While picking up to leave after a tasty breakfast I hastily left my wallet on the table. Lyle, who was absolutely wonderful, answered the phone when my husband called with an hysterical me in the background (we had been calling and visiting every place we went all day) he affirmed that I had indeed left it there and another patron noticed that it had been there for quite awhile and took it to the front counter. 1. We went in at 10:40. They stated breakfast ended at 10:30 and lunch started at 11:00 so we had to go for a walk to kill some time for the lunch menu. No seating with coffee or at least water was offered for the wait. 2. They pored steaming hot water for tea into a pint glass with no handle. The basic pint with see through glass that turned the whole cup steaming hot almost instantly. When I asked for a new one with a handle ( like a coffee or tea cup)the girl at the coffee bar poured it all over the sides of the cup. 3. The food was horrible. It looked really nice at the counter, but the salad I ordered was basic and the bread was hard. Horrible experience all around. For the 22 years I've been local to here Upper Crust has been my favorite bakery. The cakes are absolutely delicious and there is a great selection of baked goods. I like the pre made deli options for lunch and love that there are so many vegetarian options. However the unfriendly customer service and the unkemptness of the dining area/bathroom are now deterrents for me. It's not pleasant to sit there anymore. I hope they make some changes! read more

I Special Ordered a Birthday Cake with Buttercream frosting and got "Whipped cream" frosting. There Really is a Big Difference between the two ... Birthday girl was disappointed.
