Every time I've been I say this is the last time. The food is pretty basic counter style foods, it's good but not great. My frustration is with the customer service. Receiving your food after you order is always a battlefield. They do ask for your name but I don't think it even gets written down and definitely not called. I have witnessed some people with numbers on the table and supposedly they bring it to you, have yet to have that happen. So then I'm constantly getting up and down to check on my food the entire time while keeping an eye on my table. If your patient and don't mind awkwardly looking for your food after an uncomfortable amount of time you will love this place. read more

Chico, CA is an interesting place, which I had the privilege to live for three years. Since it's a relatively small college town without a lot of tourist attractions, not many people know about Chico or its amazing restaurants and bakeries. Over the years Chico has been slowly turning into a quiet Mecca of delicious food crafted by talented chefs, all with a hipster Portland vibe. If you're lucky enough to visit, or just pass through, make sure to stop at the Upper Crust Bakery on Main Street. It's right next to CSU Chico's campus and near the scenic amphitheater and creek. There are many things that make Upper Crust special. For starters they are a small community-minded bakery and café dedicated to the craftsmanship of fine baked goods. The atmosphere is inviting for quiet moments or lively conversations with friends. Upper Crust is also great spot to study, ride your bike to and sip a cappuccino on the patio, indulge in rich pastries with your significant other, or attend the frequent German conversational groups in the evenings. In short, it's a delightful place to do just about anything. And it doesn't hurt that they also serve lunch, offering homemade soups, quiche, and salads. This was the go-to place when family or friends visited. The interior is quite simplistic, adorned with local art and photography. The employees are friendly and funky, ready to answer your questions. Upper Crusts' display case is exactly how a bakery's should look with vast amounts of stacked cookies, trays of scrumptious pastries, luscious cakes, and buttery croissants. It's a delight scanning all of the different types of desserts and every time I've visited I try and order something new. But the one bakery item I consistently order is their unbelievably delicious frosted snickerdoodle. I must warn you. They're sinful just to look at. The amount of frosting alone is intimidating, and the size and thickness of the actual cookie only adds more excitement to the experience. Snickerdoodles are a gamble. Most of the time you end up with a thin crunchy cookie with hardly any cinnamon. But Upper Crust's snickerdoodles are how snickerdoodles are supposed to taste! Each morsel of these cookies are saturated with cinnamon and sugar. They are consistently moist, slightly chewy, and the perfect thickness. On its own the cookie is amazing, but Upper Crust goes one step further and slathers a generous helping of creamy vanilla frosting on top. The result? An uncontrollable urge to take another bite and then another...and well, then order another cookie. For me, these cookies are somehow reminiscent of my childhood--their comforting smell and taste read like a cozy bedtime story. If you're like me and want to add even more to your snickerdoodle experience, try dunking it in their soy cappuccino. It's heaven! The only downside to these frosted snickerdoodles is that they are very popular and sell out quickly. Overall, Upper Crust is definitely a hot spot that not many people know about, in a town that not many people know about. My boyfriend and I stood in line to order a coffee for about 5 minutes with no acknowledgement from the staff whatsoever, not even eye contact, before we had to say something to the girl working behind the counter. She had helped 3 parties who were standing in line behind us before she finally told the manager, Lyle, to help us. Needless to say, it would be nice if she were more attentive so that customers would actually return. We definitely will not be coming back, I'm surprised this place was even on Diners, Drive In's and Dives. Such a shame and major disappointment. read more

The food here is pretty good, but the customer service SUCKS!!!! They treat customers like an annoyance and are not friendly at all. I did not feel welcome. They hardly even look up at you and if they actually do its to roll their eyes or give you the bitch face. -My order was taking more than 20 minutes so I went up just to check on it and asked if they might have forgotten it. I love pastries and these were sub par. I got an apple scone, chocolate eclair, and a bran muffin... I only ate small pieces of each bc they weren't good. Wife had a pot pie and it was really good. Also had some deviled eggs, and one had a HAIR. Not only that but after telling them, they did nothing to make it right. They have some work to do read more

People!! Upper Crust has just begun carrying VEGAN SCONES and they are fantatsic!! 100% the best vegan scone I've ever had. Blueberry lemon with a light glaze....phenomenal. And HUGE--it's taken me 2 days to finish it! Food is good, not great. Tried the Athenian quiche - spinach, sun dried tomatoes, and regular black (not greek) olives. The crust was good, and maybe dusted in cornmeal? Also tried the boyfriend's veggie sandwich and pasta salad. Slightly better than average for this style of deli-counter restaurant. Horrible service though, the people working the counter had bad attitudes and looked annoyed when taking orders, then would mess orders up, and they just seemed very disorganized. Atmosphere is also lacking - come on bad-attitude-counter people, make yourselves useful and bus some tables once in a while. One friend ordered a blended smoothie (which was actually delicious), but it sat on a counter for who knows how long, because nobody brought it over to her or called out that it was ready. read more

I've been going to Upper Crust off and on for the last couple of years, even before I relocated to Chico. I would often stop in and purchase cookies to take back to my coworkers in the town I previously lived in because they were such a glorious treat! Now that I live here and work only blocks away from Upper Crust I have been in heaven...however the romance is now over. Having a particularly rough day today I decided to wander down there on lunch and treat myself to a goodie as a measure of self-consolation. It was during the lunch rush, but I had a very simple order...just 1 cookie. That's all...nothing complex, no questions or complaints....just a cookie. The lady behind the counter simply threw it in a bag, ushered me to the register, swiped my card, then promptly turned around and started tending to lunch orders coming out of the kitchen. No "Would you like your receipt?" let alone even a "Thank you." Shoot, even an "Eff off with your cookie!" would have been SOMETHING, but she just left me standing there like a moron. After about 30 seconds when I concluded she, in fact, was not going to acknowledge my existence any further I just walked away with my cookie. The cookie was fresh baked and delicious. Can't knock that. However I went in for a little pick me up on a bad day and instead of a friendly, or even courteous interaction I got treated like I was a burden. Waited over 30 minutes for a to-go order that they messed up & then refused to help fix without charging us for a whole new order. Their tomato soup is served cold & truthfully just tastes like onions. I'd like to give them credit for at least the pastries being good, because they were, but I just read several other recent reviews saying they have an issue with flies in their pastry case! I also work in the food service industry so by no means am trying to be a karen, but mistakes happen all time & I'm not sure why their stance is to be defensive to customers instead of correcting their error. I have been in their shoes more times than I can count & know that it's worth it to fix your mistake instead of upsetting your clientele & wasting their money, EVEN if you think the mistake was on the customers end (which it was not in our case). I'm glad I now know how they handle these things so I can avoid them in the future. read more

I went into Upper Crust a few days ago and had the same experience I always do...Fantastic!!! Friendly!!! If it is busy they do a great job of keeping the line moving. The food is always very good. I try to get different items each time, and every time is great. Their cakes are so delicious and beautiful. I get one for every birthday/celebration we have. I have tried every cake from Vegan to full on chocolate on chocolate for the kids. No disappointments at all. I have been to other bakeries in Chico and have not had the same level of service or quality of food that I received at Upper Crust. I recommend coming in and trying for the first time! Also, keep coming back for more if you have already been. Don't forget to try different items, you never know if you might find a new favourite. read more

Great food, pastries and cakes. Cruddy service. A few things we've experienced over the past few years: - My wife tried to get a plain roast beef sandwich for my daughter. Nothing on it. They refused to do it that way. A manager agreed. I have never heard of a place do such a thing. - They sold the pies we had ordered for Thanksgiving, even after we called and said we'd be there ASAP to pick them up. - I ordered a birthday cake for my wife last year. I have it on excellent authority that pastries cooked as deeply brown as they are cooked at the Upper Crust Bakery are carcinogenic (cancer-causing). But don't take my word for it: google the matter. And so this is why I no longer go to Upper Crust to buy a croissant--because they have been cooked too much! This afternoon was my first time ever coming into this bakery per recommendations from my clients, the girl ( short hair with glasses) who helped me had an attitude right off the bat and she made me so uncomfortable to even place my order. I wanted to ask her more questions about the menu but with her cutting me off so fast when I first placed my order, made me not want to order anything else. I might try this place again in the future but would definitely refrain from getting serviced by this girl, definitely not a good first impression for new customers coming in. read more

I have ordered the vegan white cake for numerous special occasions (bridal shower, wedding and now baby shower!). Hands down the best cake I have had from a bakery, vegan or not. Pastries, cookies and cakes are amazing. The cakes a more expensive than grocery stores, but they are worth it. I recently tried their soup because I was told (by an employee) that they are amazing and made from scratch daily. So I got the chili, and a chicken and rice soup. The chicken soup was severely lacking in flavor. I could not taste any seasonings or herbs in the broth or the chicken, not even salt. The chili was just ok. It mostly tasted like store-bought chili mix. So I will continue to get pastries and cakes, and keep it at that read more

I love the fresh pastas and assorted salads they have in the fridge case by the counter. SO TASTEY! The food is great and I can't complain. The reason for 3 stars goes beyond the food. Went in to grab a snack around 2:30. They weren't closed but they were closing up around us as we went in so i'm guessing they close at 3? Well, the door was open so when I go in to give you business I would appreciate the same respect as if I had come in at noon! They were sweeping and hustling around us to close up even though the place still had at least 12 people in the dining area chatting and eating. It was at least 5 minutes of standing there until someone actually acknowledged us. We were looked at a few times but never greeted. The man who finally helped us was probably about 30, tall and skinny with star tattoos on his wrists. He was EXTREMELY rude and unpleasant. He seemed annoyed the whole time he was talking to us and didn't smile once. He looked like he must hate his job and I don't think someone like that should be working because he is just hurting business. When a customer is treated like that do you think they are going to be jumping to come back? No, probably not. My food was great it was just unfortunate we had to deal with him! Pricey but passable. Often times the standards in the case - sandwiches, salads, quiches are bland. The deviled eggs are yummy. However i wont go back. I ordered my lunch to go and waited nearly 20 minutes to get my order. Walked back to the office, opened the bag and had someone else's lunch. First I want to say Im picky and a bit of a food snob. That being said I love this place! They have so many great items and an amazing bakery. Great staff and environment! I went to them for my wedding cake for 4/02/11 and it was amazing, EVERYONE loved it, I'm sure your thinking that's what everyone says BUT that's not the case here. it was moist, and delicious..it really ROCKED. Food is good, service is very poor. Not a place I'd choose for a coffee drink but their breakfast sandwiches and crustless quiche are good. Food seems to get lost in the microwave and still comes out cold. Servers tend to be annoyed when you ask them questions about the menu. I've ordered cakes from this bakery over the past few years. Everything from service to product has been great! I live in the Bay area. I called the bakery last night (3/17/16 @ 8:10 pm) to order a cake, not realizing the store had been closed almost an hour. A guy answered and politely took my order. He then apologized that he couldn't take my payment information because the store was actually closed and the register closed out. It was no problem for me and I told him I would call the store in the morning with a credit card. He thanked me for the order and said good night. Wow. An hour after closing....and he was still polite! LOL!! Called this morning, spoke to Rachel. Another helpful and friendly voice...AND...she had all the correct order information from my call last night! Payment made, pick up time confirmed....can't wait to taste this cake! Upper Crust is a Fabulous Bakery but not the greatest restaurant.. I use them frequently and they are my first and only choice for specialty occassion cakes and cupcakes. They made my wedding cake at an extremely reasonable price for gourmet flavors and fillings and did not charge extra for decorating it. They made gourmet flavored filled cupcakes for aprty we had and I had to spend most of the evening telling everyone where I got them and writing down their telephone number and they were boxed well for travel and extremely reasonably priced. I have grabbed a quiche to go on several occassions and it has always been excellent no matter which flavor. Other than dealing with those who handle the special orders by phone and in person, the staff is odd at best. The special order folks are fantastic in every way. Nice, attentive, detail oriented, informative and seemingly genuinely interested in helping you and doing a good job. The counter staff tends to be spacy, disinterested in serving you, and sometimes borderline rude. But since I usually only deal with them on pick up it can be tolerated read more

The quality of the coffee and croissant I had at the Upper Crust Bakery was acceptable (not wonderful, but perfectly acceptable for this type of establishment). The service I received was reprehensible. In my 56 years on this planet, I have traveled to many places and have had the good and bad fortune to experience the best and worst of many eateries. This bakery now resides in my top five (possibly even my top three) most terrible customer service experiences ever. The staff was rude, surly, curt, inept (the woman who waited on me gave me the wrong change, in my favor, two times and got angry when I handed back the extra). The staff is just plain angry (how dare I actually want to order coffee & croissant?). It just oozes out of every person on the staff, and smacks everyone standing in line right in the face. I picked up lunch today and when I got back to my office, I saw that my order was completely wrong (obviously a mix-up with somebody else's). I called and was immediately put through to a manager, who apologized, and offered to walk the correct order over to my office downtown. I happily agreed and within 15 minutes, I had the right lunch. I got to my desk and opened the bag to find that they had even given me a complimentary dessert to make up for the inconvenience.
