I had used Up and Down movers before and was extremely satisfied with the work, however, apparently Up and Down has merged and they are HORRIBLE. I booked 2 men and a truck for a 4 room condo with a basement. The day before they called and TOLD me I needed 3 men which raised the hourly rate from $125 to $160. They arrived an hour late. No professionalism at all. They plugged their phones in while packing truck and listened to "music". They couldn't get my sofa out of condo without removing an overhead light and the legs. And the pic shows how it was left in new house. NOTHING WAS PLACED WHERE MARKED. My new place is like a tossed salad. We have days of work ahead of us now. AND THEY TOOK 6 HOURS!! Terrible!! They quoted us $500 and tried charging $1,467 and change, after the move, yesterday, July 1, 2017! 2 employees arrived an hour late and one of the employees was 2 hours late. They also did not use their own trucks and used a Budget rental truck which should've been the first sign. They completely damaged most of the furniture because they just wanted to get it on and off the truck as fast as possible and had little care for the quality of their job or the content in which they were moving. Had to constantly watch over them because we did not feel comfortable leaving our stuff alone with them. I am only 24 and had to personally speak with the boss yesterday, via telephone, and make a complaint against the 3 men who moved us. The movers admitted to damaging the furniture and damaged the corner of a wall and the door frame of the place we moved OUT of and damaged part of the door of the place we moved INTO, while on the phone with their boss. Was able to come to an agreed price which was still $500 more than what was originally quoted which is peanuts compared to the amount of damage the movers did to the furniture and BOTH apartments. I have pictures of the damage as well as the movers, the phone number and name of the boss upon request but please DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR BELONGINGS, BECAUSE THEY WON'T! Please pay attention to the negative reviews and do not hire Up & Down movers if you care about your furniture. We hired Up & Down Movers in September to move 3.5 miles from an apartment into a house. I corresponded multiple times with the office manager, Heather Lynn via phone and e-mail. It was confirmed (twice) that we would need a mattress cover and I gave an inventory of all the furniture that we needed to move, and that we would need furniture covers and proper wrapping. I made sure to ask Heather about their policy for damaged items, because all our furniture is antique, mid century modern, and I wanted to ensure that in case anything was damaged, we would be compensated. Heather referred me to the website where they have their company policy that states that they will reimburse customers for damages caused by movers. Moving day comes and two hours after the start time, the movers finally show up with a 10 foot truck (we had a 16ft truck reserved, in writing) and only two furniture pads, and no mattress cover. The movers assured us that they would be very careful with our furniture. Hours longer and hundreds of dollars more than our quoted move (due to the smaller truck than we were originally booked), we were finally moved into the house. I had to get on the phone with the owner, who offered to take an hour off because of the smaller truck. It wasn't until the movers left that I realized in the last trip, because the movers had taken the mattress and slid it on top of my dresser, they had damaged both the dresser and the mattress in the process (see photos). This is where the worst part of the experience begins. I felt assured, knowing the company had a reimbursement policy in place. However, as soon as I mentioned this to Heather, she began to avoid my calls and stop answering my e-mails. I would call her from my cell phone, get no answer, and call her from another number and she would pick up. She wouldn't give me full names or numbers of their claims officer (not convinced they even have one). When I finally got her on the phone, she told me to get a quote from a restoration company. When I did that, she e-mailed the furniture restorer, accusing him of stealing all the photos on his website (she claimed that she knew this because she used to be a "hacker"). All of this time and energy and we are still left with broken furniture, as they refuse to answer our e-mails or calls. Please do not give your money to this unprofessional company. read more

They were okay.. I used them to move from new haven to Hamden. My roommate used two young studs for her move from new haven to Stamford. She had more items/furniture and moved further away and our moves took about the same amount of time-so cost was pretty close. Saw my guys on their cellphones and they took way to long to get from my old apartment to my new one, I was calling them to find out where they were, bc they took so long. Their movers are excellent -- professional, friendly, efficient, extremely careful with furniture. I cannot say enough about them. Service was 5-stars. However, my experience with the management was the exact opposite. I was moving from one apartment to another within the same building and was still charged a "travel fee" even though I did not use their truck. I had emailed the company back and forth prior to the move and was told that I could get a flat fee of $75/hour for labor since the move was within the same building and therefore they didn't need their truck to drive my furniture anywhere. It would make sense to not be charged a "travel fee" if you ain't traveling anywhere... At the end of the move, the guys helping me move charged me $150 for the services as I had expected and thought that we had agreed upon. 10-minutes after the fact, their management calls asking for a $60 travel fee despite email documenting our agreement. Aaron (someone in their management I'm assuming) tells me he would've told me about the $60 on the phone prior to the move but I told him I understood everything about the moving agreement already. I did understand. I understood what they had told me over email -- that it would be a flat $75/hr for labor since it was literally a move ten floors down. The $60 would be cheap for using their truck but charging me for that was straight robbery. This has obviously left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

Perhaps your apartment is up a very narrow staircase to a third floor apartment... Perhaps, just perhaps, you have attempted the move on your own and fell and busted your knee on the very first trip. What do you do? You hire movers... Sometimes you need a dude... Or two dudes... To do the work for you... Here comes the tricky part... Who's a scam artist, who's going to bust up all of your sh*t... Who's just not going to show up? I searched all avenues and came upon these guys. They were twenty minutes late... BUT... I understand that moving can be tricky and they give you estimates of time in the beginning so seriously... Who cares? And grant called.... And told me.... So that's what counts in my book I was nervous... I was really flipping nervous... I'm anxious by nature... But grant assured me that this would be done with ease and not to worry.... He was right! I didn't have to lift a finger... I just had to direct... This control freak was taking it all in stride and I'm glad that I did. There was grant and the other guy who's name I forgot... Of course... But they were both fantastic!!! One of my pieces currently has a slight ding on the corner but I really don't care. One of the worst businesses I've ever encountered, avoid at all costs. My movers never showed up and there is no follow-up or explanation from management. I reserved movers a week in advance for a very local move on a Saturday afternoon. The exact date, time, and location were confirmed by phone with the management on Friday evening, and at least twice before this. No movers showed up. I tried calling the two business phone numbers and one cell phone number for management about 10 times over a span of two hours, there was absolutely no response. I ended up calling another moving company after waiting for two hours, and was lucky that they could send a couple people over immediately to help with our move. The Up and Down Movers are all things you look for in a moving company: Professional, fast, careful. I was dreading my move across town in New Haven. I read reviews and heard about Up and Down Movers by word of mouth so I decided to call them for help. 1) Professional: Aaron the owner called me 30 minutes before my scheduled time to let me know they were on their way. They came 5 minutes before my scheduled time. Aaron and his partner were very professional, but also easy to talk to. They took the time to listen to what needed to be moved, and what didn't. They were very friendly. I felt so cared for! In the end, Aaron broke down the bill and went through it very carefully with me. 2) Fast: What can I say, Up and Down Movers moved my apartment across town in 1 hour and 30 minutes! I was shocked. I was expecting it to take 4 hours or something! But they took a look at my stuff and said it should take no time. They were very strategic, they were very right. They know what they are doing! 3) Careful: They handled my stuff very gently too! No walls or beds have any scratches. No broken glassware. I couldn't asked for a better company. In the past I HATED moving. Moving in general is such a dreadful process. But Up and Down Movers made it such a pleasant process. I moved from New Haven 2nd floor apt to New York City to a 3rd floor walk up. They were extremely friendly and efficient. I asked them to bring extra padding for a 55inch flatscreen TV and mattress cover, and they brought that and extra blankets for protecting other furniture. They charged a flat-rate and there were no surprises or extra charges other than $7 for the mattress cover which I already knew about. They were friendly, fast, and professional. I needed receipt for work reimbursement and that was emailed to me within the week. I highly recommend them for any move. read more

The movers were nice guys, and they did get the job done, but unfortunately that's where my positive endorsement ends. They did not have some of the necessary equipment to move my stuff (e.g., a dolly), which is pretty basic if you are professional movers! This was one reason everything took much longer than they'd estimated. The other-- they claimed-- was the elevator in my new apartment building. However, I also observed them and it was clear they were taking their sweet time each step of the way. This was one of the most basic possible moves. I was moving a one-bedroom worth of stuff from one apartment in an elevator building to another one LESS THAN THREE BLOCKS AWAY, also in an elevator building. (If I didn't have a physical disability, I'd have just rented a UHaul and done it myself-- that's how simple it was.) And yet, to my shock, the move took more than 7 hours and cost me a horrific $650. All this to move a one-bedroom two and a half blocks. So yes, these guys are nice, and they are not scammers (at least not in the ways some companies can be). But their inefficiency makes even a simple local move into a big production-- for your wallet most of all! read more

In an effort to be fair, I'll just copy the email I sent to the owner of this company on August 2nd before I begin: "Good Morning Aaron, I hope you are doing well! I'd like to start off by saying the crew you sent yesterday to help with my move was great, for the most part. They were really sweet, helpful men and they made a stressful day less stressful. With all of that said, there were a few hiccups that I feel need rectified. First, the movers were 4 hours late. They did not show up at my apartment until 5pm (scheduled at 1pm). I understand things happen, but four hours is a little extreme, especially when I used vacation time at work to ensure I would be there on time. When they finally did show up, they took a few minutes to smoke cigarettes and charge their phones. Once they got moving, they were really great, but getting them moving was tough. One of the movers complained about how tired he was the whole time and asked me for cigarettes repeatedly during the move. When we were all packed up at my previous apartment, I was told there wasn't enough room for two bed frames that I had asked them to dispose of, since they are heavy. Unfortunately, that was not done, so I have to go back to take care of them, so I don't get charged for leaving furniture in my old place. Finally, we went to the new apartment and it took them over three hours to unload. I have used movers previously, and it took four hours TOTAL to move the same furniture, and that included a 35 minute drive. There were times that I did not see them for 20-30 minutes, and when I did see them, they only had one or two boxes with them. I understand if they need breaks every now and then, but every trip up to the new apartment should not have taken 30 minutes. On top of all of this, the glass on my curio cabinet was broken during the move and is not fixable (I can send you a picture this evening). They were certainly very sorry for breaking it, but did not tell me how to remedy it with the company. All in all, I feel as though I paid $600 for a move that did not go very well. Again, I appreciate their hard work, but I think they took advantage of me knowing I was being charged by the hour. Please let me know if there is anything you can do to help rectify the situation. Thank you" As you can see, I definitely had a mixed experience with Up & Down Movers during the actual move. I wanted to give the company the opportunity to make it right before I reviewed them, however, after many promises of phone calls, I'm forced to write a negative review of my experience. I now am left with broken furniture, a wasted half day of work, and a feeling of being ripped off. They took my money and didn't care at all about the negative experience and rectifying it. I have given them three weeks to call me back, but they never have. As someone who works in the service industry, I thought they would appreciate me giving them the chance to fix it before letting everyone know about my bad experience. Refunding me one hour would've helped and would've left me a customer for life. They do have great pricing, but they obviously don't worry about hiring good help. I strongly recommend folks not to use this unprofessional moving company. When they moved me out of my apartment, they carelessly banged my furniture into the wall, creating a large hole. They then got into a near-physical altercation with my landlady, which I had to defuse. My landlady withheld $250 from my security deposit for the damaged wall, and Up & Down Movers refused to respond to my emails or phone calls asking them to pay. I had a great experience with Up and Down movers earlier this week for a move from Connecticut to NYC. I had to arrange everything on short notice for a same-day move from a one bedroom to a studio. After playing phone tag with a number of different companies, Aaron got back to me with a very reasonable quote right away. The day of the move, they were about 40 minutes late, which freaked me out a bit, but again Aaron was in contact/contact-able, explained the situation, and once here, he and Will were super efficient and personable. The truck was loaded in about half an hour and they even beat me to New York and had almost everything unloaded and in the apartment when I got there. I moved to my new place yesterday with the help of Up and Down Movers. This move was super challenging for me as I was doing everything alone. I decided to hire movers and found Up and Down Movers on Yelp. I called them and the owner (Aaron) was really helpful - I called him a week in advance was able to book two guys. They required a deposit, which wasn't an issue. I paid this over the phone with my credit card. They arrived on time on the day of the move (I was late myself). I enjoyed the service because they knew what to and didn't require any supervision at all. Everything went smoothly and I appreciate how careful they were with my stuff (I actually witnessed how slowly they walked while carrying my bed to avoid tearing the mattress, scratching the bed frame, and dirtying the walls). I felt overall that my things were treated with extra care. I also appreciate that they set up my bed for me -- that's totally a value-add. I especially also liked that they charged hours vs. # of boxes. I had a horrible experience with Moving Staffers that charged me $900+ for packing and loading my container (I came from a studio unit and I didn't have a lot of stuff) vs. Up and Down Movers' $200+ charge for unloading (that's about a $700 difference - unreasonable considering the only difference in service is the packing - again, I didn't have a lot of stuff). Overall I was very happy with Up and Down Movers and I will recommend them. I know they're just starting up so I'm rooting for them. I wish there was a way they could allow all payments to be done online (I used my card to pay for the deposit but they require cash for the remaining cost). read more

I used this company to move in May 2019 and within the hour contacted them when I discovered damages, including deep scratches on the wood floor, paint being rubbed off the walls, transfer of furniture colors onto the walls, a side of the crib damaged, and a wooden bed frame scraped. I have tried calling and emailing the company consistently in the months since to reach a resolution and they do not respond or followup. Before the move, I was also told that the movers would use mats to protect the floors and wrap up the furniture. That did not happen. My white mattresses were just thrown into the truck without any covering and nothing was on the floor when the movers dragged the furniture into the house. Also, on the day of the move, the movers said that they could not complete my move because they didn't schedule enough time and they had to leave to finish a job they didn't complete the day before. I deeply regret my decision to hire this company and am incredibly frustrated that none of their promises about how the move would go actually happened. I tried giving them ample time (6 months) to handle this matter, but their lack of response demonstrates they do not care about their customers. Look somewhere else for your moving needs. read more

Aaron, Cedric and James provided an excellent experience. I called them based on the two yelp reviews. I was in a jam because I had to move ASAP after the neighbors across the hall became violent, one was arrested, the other assaulted my airbnb guest for calling the police and I could no longer in good conscience rent my place out as a host. This week, the last in May, is the single busiest time in New Haven for moving, and I was sure I would have a terrible time finding someone and have to settle for poor service. Aaron answered the phone himself and we were able to book a move for the next afternoon on the spot. He gave me an accurate estimate with no hidden charges. They were careful with my stuff and not one thing I could see got dinged up. Their assessment of how long it would take was just 1/2 and hour under the actual duration of the move. They were polite, articulate, clearly smart, and seemed to really like their jobs. I can't tell you how often I've had movers who were sullen and indifferent. I hope I don't have to move again for a while, but I will call these guys back in a flash when the time comes. The night before the move I get a text message telling me that they want $700 for the job. Based on previous Yelp reviews, I used Up & Down Movers for a recent move from New Haven, CT to Norwalk, CT. I would classify my experience as good but not great. The Pros: * All my possessions were moved safely and nothing was broken / destroyed / ruined, including some fragile pieces of furniture. * Aaron and his team were extremely warm, friendly, and professional, which has not always been my experience with movers in the past. He was extremely communicative in advance of the move (including day-of), and during the move itself it was very pleasant interacting with him and his team. The Cons: * The movers showed up an hour and a half late (4:30PM for a 3PM appointment), which judging by a previous review seems to be a pattern rather than a one-off thing. Aaron called in advance to warn me of the delay and apologize, and it wasn't that big a deal as I had nowhere in particular I had to be. But it was still kind of annoying given that I'd scheduled the move over a week in advance and had woken up extremely early that morning to finish packing in time for my 3 PM appointment. * The move took longer than Aaron had estimated in his quote. This was annoying for two reasons. First, the move cost a bit more than I was expecting (though the final price wasn't unreasonable -- $525 plus tip for moving a 1 bedroom). Second, in tandem with the delayed start, it meant that my move wasn't complete until close to 10 PM -- I didn't like arriving in my new place late at night, and I'd been expecting to have the evening to do some initial unpacking / setting up, so this was a bit inconvenient. * I don't think they shrink-wrapped the cushions on my leather couch, as they were pretty dusty when they arrived. No long-term damage done, but again, a little annoying. All in all I would recommend Up & Down Movers -- the movers were nice and they got my furniture and boxes from my old apartment to my new one without anything being damaged, which at the end of the day is most of what I was paying for. But they lacked a certain perfectionism and attention to detail in planning and execution, and for that reason get 4 rather than 5 stars. read more

I had a very good experience with up and downs movers. The booking by phone went fine and Aaron even called me back the day before the moving to accommodate an earlier time (which was not available at the time I called). Their team of 2 was friendly, on time and did a great job moving me from a two bedrooms apartment with two flights of stairs (not easy ones). They put everything in place nicely. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is a few scratches on some furniture. The price was as expected, they did the job in the time they had estimated. Everything went smoothly. I had a great experience with Aaron and Will moving my 1 bedroom apartment from storage into my new place. This is a new company, so there are still some logistical kinks to work out, but that being said, they did everything in their power to deal with the kinks on the fly. They got stuck in a huge traffic jam on I-95 on their way to me (which, given the time, was somewhat predictable), but to make up for being late, they had a 3rd guy come and start unloading my storage unit and then he helped unpack at my new apartment free of charge. Aaron and Will are friendly and helpful. Will is a wizard at spatial reasoning and got my stuff loaded in the truck faster than I thought humanly possible. All of my stuff made it intact, and given that my belongings are older and often Ikea, that is quite a feat! I recommend Aaron and Will and am confident that as their business grows, the service will just get better. read more

This was the first moving company I ever hired, so I don't know how it rates compared to others, BUT-since they were SO INCREDIBLY HELPFUL, I will describe our experience in a bit of a detail. So, my current roommate and I were moving from 2 different apartments in New Haven to Boston. Our entire workplace was moving, and it was a pretty sudden decision from our boss, so we really didn't have that much money left to spend on moving after covering just the apartment rental itself (the price of apartments in Boston is crazy). Anyway, I contacted Aaron (the owner), he responded really fast and also came by soon to evaluate the apartments and give us an estimate. I made him spell out the price for us both since I couldn't believe it-he offered a bit more than half of the price all other companies offered (and we contacted 10-12 different companies). Yes, you read correctly-1/2 price. Needles to say, my roommate and I gave him the deposit and arranged for the move immediately. One of the other companies we contacted called us incessantly afterwards to try and make us break the deal we made with Aaron and hire them, as they were older and longer in business and bleah bleah blea. Nope-a deal is a deal, so we stuck with it. The moving day came, we saw them coming on time with a small truck at which point I got worried that our stuff wasn't going to fit. Surprise, surprise-they squeezed my entire 1-bedroom (with over 20 large boxes) into less than a third of the truck in 1 hour. My roommate had even more and they did it also within 1 hour. While they were doing that, I was on my way to the train station to catch a ride to Boston so I can open up the apartment door for the guys to get the stuff in. Due to Peter Pan's amazing bus service (yes, this was sarcastic...), I missed the bus that would get me to Boston in time. Meantime, my roommate talked to the movers, explained what had happened and they offered me a ride with them, which I took. This saved the day-we got to Boston early enough so they could finish the job at a reasonable time. Our building in Boston has one of the worlds smallest elevators-only 2-3 normally sized people can squeeze in. Even with that, the guys unloaded the truck and reassembled the furniture in a few hours (4th floor!). Nothing got damaged (and I have a looooot of glass decorations), and everything went as smooth as it gets. I was truly impressed. We are both truly grateful for the job well done-plus, the guys were more than nice. I mean, come on-they gave me a ride so everything can be done in time instead of stalling it until God knows when.
