I moved to Peru NY from Cromwell Ct. My condo was on the 2nd floor. Their crew of (3) had me loaded 1 1/4 hours and we were on the road. It was a small house I moved into and was nervous on how I should arrange items. The crew was great and gave me great suggestions. At 81, I was worried about some of the old furniture that had been my mom's. They treated everything with care and wrapped all so there wouldn't be any damage, In 1 1/2 hours all was unloaded, items put back together and not a piece was damaged. Colonial Movers were good to their word on the cost, time arrival to my condo and the expertise of their men. It was my pleasure to buy this crew breakfast on the trip to NY. I would recommend Colonial Movers in Berlin,Ct to anyone who has thoughts of moving. I gave them a list of what I was moving so when they arrived they were equipped. Will never recommend this company. Uncoordinated, sloppy, and at times very unprofessional. They left our furniture and the apartment damaged. The day started off on a bad note when I took the gentleman with the clipboard through the home and let him know only the large furniture was going. No books, no boxes, no bags (all of this stuff was on the floor, in a separate pile). No small items, nothing in the kitchen, and absolutely no boxes. He seemed very understanding, yet I had to repeatedly tell all three of them multiple times that only the large furniture was going, and stopped one of them on the stairs carrying a box from the kitchen out to the truck. When moving the queen mattress, they shattered the light fixture in the bedroom. When I walked in after hearing something shatter, they were silent. I asked "what's going on?" and was met with a brisk "don't worry about it, the company will pay for it." I understand that moving heavy furniture takes time and everyone feels the movers they hire should work faster, but these gentleman were genuinely inefficient and intentionally adding time to the move. They spent 20 minutes removing the door to the laundry room because the dryer "wouldn't fit through the door without scraping,", and scraped up the floor in the process of getting it out of that room anyway. They also took the front door of the hinges (keep in mind neither door had to come off to get the appliances in) but were absolutely baffled on how to fit it through the doorframe. I literally asked them to rotate it 90° and it fit easily with about four inches of clearance. The doors in no way needed to come off and added an hour of time. When the washer was disconnected, they chose to drain the water that had gathered onto the floor rather than the drip pan with a drain. I know this only because I was standing on my landlords porch downstairs when water BEGAN TO COME THROUGH THE CEILING. I obviously ran upstairs and asked what was going on, and they very cordially commented about how sometimes there's water left and not to worry about it. When I handed them a few towels and told them it was coming through the ceiling below, they continued to stand there while one of them put the towels INSIDE the drip pan instead of on the floor where the water was. All of my items seemed to get to the storage unit, which genuinely surprised me considering the hodge-podge of other people's possessions that my stuff was mixed into and pressed up against in the moving truck. It was an extremely disorganized process, and this is all after scheduling issues that ended with them coming on a different day than intended. I called Saturday morning at 11:30, introduced myself by name, and asked if they'd be closer to 12 or 3. The man on the phone briskly said "3 o'clock" and that was it. When I called at 3:15 to ask where they were, they said they had no record of me in the system. I had apparently been scheduled for Sunday 12-3, which meant having to call out of my overnight shift on Saturday night in order to meet them at the new time of 9 AM Sunday morning. All in all extremely disorganized and not nearly worth the $800 paid for a sloppy job. After all the damage and disagreement, the lead gentleman still asked us to write any positive comments we had on that section of the receipt. I mentioned the shattered light but stopped short at commenting on the mess one of them had left in my already-cleaned-for-the-move bathroom, with urine all over the floor. What a joke. read more

In short, I would never recommend this company. The move ended up costing well over 2x what they quoted, and that was WITH ME HAVING TO HELP MOVE AND REASSEMBLE FURNITURE to get the job done. We moved within the same town - four blocks away. We live in a 2100sqft 4BR house. I was quoted a 7 hour move, plus an hour for transit time. On moving day, we were sent three men - one of them was at least 60 years old and not capable of carrying anything heavy. They arrived on time at 9:30am. The truck wasn't packed until 4:30pm. On arrival at the house, one of the movers told me it was definitely a 5-man job in order to get it done in 7 hours. Upon arrival at the new house, I called Colonial to send help because the three guys were exhausted. Their response was there was nothing they could do. The movers weren't out of our new house until 9:30pm that evening (we have three children under 8 years old). I had to help the movers unload and reassemble furniture to even get them out by 10pm. Furthermore, they had to COME BACK two days later to finish the job. I was not offered any discount and no effort was made to "make it right" beyond eliminating the trip charge for the second time they came out...which they wouldn't have had to do in the first place had they lived up to their own estimate. The estimate WASN'T EVEN CLOSE. It took them 4.25 hours to finish the job on the second trip when again, I was sent three guys, one of whom was at least 60 years old. They charged me down to the quarter hour when the last quarter hour was spent going BACK to the original house because the movers forgot to put a door back on the hinges and forgot their clip board with all the paperwork! Absolutely horrible customer service. I would never, ever recommend this company. I will say that the movers were all very cordial and did not complain a bit. The first three were absolutely wasted by the end of the day from how hard it was to move an entire house with basically one guy who was young enough to carry the heavy stuff, one middle aged guy to help, and then one older guy to coordinate and fetch stuff. Just a terrible way to treat your employees. By the way, always tip your movers - it's never their fault that the company understaffs a job like this. I shopped around to four different movers and settled on Colonial because the Yelp reviews were almost universally good. That was a total mistake. What was estimated to be a $1,120 move ended up costing $2,275 without tips. Avoid these guys. When something goes wrong, the answer was always "there is nothing we could do." I can't believe I paid this company $2,275 to send me six guys over two different days to do a move that should have happened within a day, in addition to having to pitch in myself because they understaffed the move BOTH times. DON'T DO IT!!! A few words to describe my experience, NO communication, unprofessional, late, over charged, lies, excuses, missing items, damaged and scratched furniture, broken glass on wall hangings that they packed. It started out good, talked to Brandon in the office on 4/26 and gave him a list of what we where moving from Ct. to Fl. and he explained that this was an estimate on weight and it may change when they weigh the truck which I can understand. We arranged for on or around 6/5 as the pick up date as my house sale was closing on 6/7. He said Tim was my contact from here on out. Then it went south from there. After several calls and texts to Tim starting 5/21 with no return call from Tim I called the office on 5/30 and they said it was still too early to get an exact date. 6/4 three days from closing I still don't know when they are coming. I called the office explained my concerns Tim finally called me and he would be there on 6/7. I said that won't work because my closing is at 10:00 am on that day. Ok we'll be there first thing on 6/5. At 12:00 pm 6/5 he was a no show with no phone call or text. Called and then the excuses started, my truck broke down we have to rent a truck will be there first thing on 6/6. At 11:00 still no movers I was starting to panic that I did not have movers. Finally 12:00 they show. Its not Colonial Moving It's 21st century movers out of Ma. They packed everything and was told it be about a week to get to Fl. Three weeks later... The weight was extra which I expected so more $ for that. They charged $968 extra to box 7 wall hangings one of which was broken. $800 extra to rent a shuttle truck because his 80' truck will not get into the apartment complex. Calling them crappy is an insult to crap. Made an appointment early so I can go to work later in the day. They called and said their driver called in sick and the next one would be in an hour and a half later. 2 hours go by, no call. I call to see status, the driver never showed. They said they didn't k now where he was, when earlier they said he said he would be in for 11. Finally after a 4th call they said they could get to me in 2 hours. 3 hours later they called and said they would be there in a half an hour. A horribly disgusting company. Louis, Randy, and one younger mover came to move FURNITURE only from Cromwell to Farmington. They do not insure missing jewelry, money, as well as a number of other things. To start, the movers attempted to move a jewelry case and while doing so somehow managed to spill jewelry all the way from the house to the truck. When confronted they were extremely nonchalant, especially considering they were not supposed to be touching the jewelry case (come to find out they were most likely trying to find anything of value). Among the things that were not moved by the movers was a huge container of coins (probably containing $500+). The change was on the counter at the new house for about 20 minutes and dissapeared into thin air as soon as the movers left. The benefit of the doubt was given to the movers and we unpacked every single box. It seems that there was no way that it was only one of them as they all sit in the front of the truck and the back of the truck was completely empty. We were also extremely generous and bought everybody lunch as well as tipped 20% (which they pressured us into claiming that "their occupation runs on tips similar to a server"). When contacting the owner, he said he would talk to the movers and get back to us. When he called today, he said he would refund the tip but couldn't do anything else. Just know that if you hire this company you risk being stolen from and they will not discriminate as this time they stole from a single mother with 2 kids. We will be contacting law enforcement as well as the better business bureau and potentially an attorney to try to rectify the situation since the owner was more than unwilling to take responsibility for his employees to prevent this from happening to anyone else. (btw stay away from TAIT Transportation LLC as they are affiliated with Colonial Moving & Storage). With the way the world is today, invest in a moving company that will mark and take inventory of every single one of your items. read more

I used them to move one bedroom furniture from a house into a one bedroom apartment. They took large pieces apart and took down the furniture on stairs and covered everything up carefully. They packed up some small items and came to the building quickly to unload and set up again to a lower level downstairs. They were friendly, clean and on time. I do not recommend Colonial Van Lines. They first underestimated my move weight and told me they needed to add 6,000 pounds to the weight, doubling my cost. The final weight was over 2000 pounds under the estimate. They will not refund the difference in cost and will not unload your goods unless you pay the full amount. Both of these estimates were based on telephone inventory not an actual walk-through of a professional. It seems highly problematic that a business can claim you can consent to being overcharged and not be refunded the difference between the estimated weight and the actual weight, especially if they want to argue that you can be charged if your weight exceeds the estimate. read more

Few more details: 1) The move was from Brookfield to Shelton - its NOT a 1 hour drive, especially on a Sunday - it is 40 minutes. 2) The movers on purpose packed things slowly with one of the two guys staying in the truck during most of the move. I can wholeheartedly appreciate the other guy who wasn't doing that but it takes two to tango and he complained a few times as well. 3) They spent 30 minutes trying to find out the right way to pack the TV - and even damaged the original packaging I had - which is right on par with the other review you see here - thankfully my TV survived. 4) The walking distance between the elevator and the truck was very standard and not miles long as the person here is claiming it to be. Long story short: I was moving from a 600 sq foot apartment and by no means can an apartment that big take double the estimated time of 2-3 hours (it took 6+ hours) - unless a) the packers are slow on purpose - Check b) the distance is too long - Shelton is 40 minutes from Brookfield - Check c) the packers unpack the stuff at the new place (they did not) - Check d) items from the wardrobe / kitchen / bathroom need to be packed - these had been already moved a day prior - keeping only the furniture in the move - Check I'm entitled to my opinion as rightly said and this job could have finished in 4 hours flat had the right people with the right attitude been sent. They sent 3 people, but I'm not sure why as 1 of them was pretty much useless. He spent more time in my daughter's office chair than anything else. If he wasn't sitting there, he was leaning or sitting someplace else. He was sitting on the front steps & his co-worker said something, so he got up & stood leaning on the truck. We have pics. I sent them to the manager. Also, we had roughly 20 pieces of furniture, heavier ones like china cabinet, couch, etc, 3 appliances, and misc boxes and stuff. The rental truck they came with was so small that they had to make 2 trips. It took them from 9:15 am to 1:45 pm - including the 2nd trip (even though there was a separate charge for travel time). They took (3) 15 min breaks. We paid for 7 hours - $50 for the complaint about the nearly useless guy. They also mistreated our furniture. A rocker/recliner was placed on it's side (the side with the lever) on the floor so the guy could shove it/angle it through the doorway instead of him getting someone to help him carry it on it's side. When I saw what he was doing & said something, he shrugged. We also were wondering why so much of our stuff - including cloth furniture had dirt, mud (it had rained the day before), grass, etc on them. It seems when something wasn't sitting on the dolly right, they knocked it off onto the ground & then put it back. They figured we didn't know if we weren't out there. Our stove fell off the dolly at the old address (they didn't use straps most of the time). When we asked what that noise had been, they pretended not to know what we were talking about. We could see the dents & a piece broken off. A dresser had the back knocked off, but they put it against the wall with the piece behind it. TV stand that is less than 6 months old has horrible gouge on top...a box was set on it to cover so we didn't see! See, we couldn't be everywhere, but they weren't aware the new place has security cameras! The pics I've included were taken from my cell. I didn't include anything from the security cameras as I'm trying to figure out how to share those, but they can be seen in my ap. I had paid what I did as I didn't feel I had a choice (2 handicapped women & a 15 year old girl) - AND I hadn't reviewed the camera footage. I also plan to file a complaint with the BBB! read more

We recently purchased a new home, but didn't have a firm move date until the week before, so we were late in booking a moving company. Colonial was able to accommodate us. Had a great experience with Brandon, Ivan...can't remember if that was his name...I'm so sorry , and Caesar. All were super nice guys who were very good at their jobs. Didn't waste any time, especially after it started to downpour! Anything we asked for, they were able to handle. And the way Brandon packed the truck was very impressive! Okay, so I selected Colonial because they gave me an great quote - 3 men, 1 truck 6 hours @ $1200. I have 3 kids and moved from a 1700 sq ft house full of items, they did not have to pack anything (we did most of this) and they did not have to move more then just a handful of boxes, (again we did this ourselves), they moved just large furnature, and mattresses, and they took a total of 10 hours to move and unpack everything, therefore I paid approx. 1k more than the quote. In the end it was still less than I expected to pay for moving that much stuff. they crew was nice, very professional and did not damage any of the stuff. just be ready to pay more than the original quote, and they add 4% for CC charges. read more

Although the movers from Colonial were polite & did work diligently they damaged my expensive leather loveseat. I discovered the damage after they left. I contacted the owner & let him know & sent him photos of the tear in the leather loveseat. I also contacted a leather repair service & sent the quote to Colonial Movers. I never received a response after several emails & calls to I assume was the owner of the company. I put tape on the tear to prevent further damage. It has been months & doubt they will ever repair or compensate for the damage to my leather loveseat. I don't recommend this company at all. The most fraudulant and unethical comany. They use extortion tactics to jack up prices after you have agreed to a contracted agreement. They promise delivery when signing your contact then hold your truck in storage up to 21 days. They lie where you truck is. First they say its in one state then another then another. You never get a straight answer. After 20 calls and threatening to take legal action they finally gave me the name of the driver to actually find out when I might get delivery. They said I could recieve delivery if I paid an extra $1500.00 to expedidite services. I never agreed to this and when the driver fnally did show up and demanded the money we refused to pay. They threatened not to release the my mercahandise and we threatened to call the police to report this extortion if they did not unload our stuff. Do not use this company and go through the hell we did. We originally agreed to pay $5000.00 and our cost ballooned up to over $7000.00 and the were 5 days late over our agreed contractual contract. read more

If I could give no stars I would. This has been beyond frustrating. I recently booked this company for my move from Texas to Delaware. When I booked, the sales rep Steve was super friendly and helpful. I paid a deposit and was told that 50% of the remainder was due at pick and the rest at delivery. I was also told that my items could be delivered by April 11. This was all a lie. When the movers showed up, it was for a different company entirely. I understand they contract out which is fine. However, I was then charged $800 more and they wanted 70% that day and remainder at delivery. I did not have much of choice since I needed to move. Then I was told my items would not be delivered the 11th but probably Sunday or Monday (12th or 13th) and they would call the following day for a more definitive ETA. No one called. i spent all weekend calling and emailing with no answers. After finally getting ahold of someone Monday who was in no way apologetic, I was told 3-5 days for delivery (after I had to call back again because they could not contact dispatch until after 1030am). Well today is day 5 and I have heard nothing so I called again and was told 2-3 days. Again, no one is apologetic. I start my new job Monday and now have to go out and buy clothes to wear. I have also emailed the sales rep Steve numerous times and get no response. It is beyond frustrating. I know it is a long drive and I would not be nearly as frustrated if all the information was given to me up front. Their customer service is terrible and 9 days later I am still waiting for my things with little information and hope I'll even get my belongings in the near future. THIS IS A SCAM COMPANY! They give you a quote and then end up charging you double. I was given an estimate of $1,500 for a one bedroom apartment for my move from Baton Rouge to Chicago. I was told the move would take 2-3 days by the Colonial rep. I paid the $500 deposit. Movers came two days after the agreed upon date. I expected to see a Colonial truck, however instead some third party moving company called Acirfa Van Lines showed up. My things were loaded onto the truck and then the driver gave me the contract to sign saying that i owed them $2,400 more on day of delivery. Like what!? Apparently my belongings took up twice as much space as "they expected" so i had to be charged more. B.S. I had no choice but to sign the contract since my things were already on the truck. When my expected delivery day arrived, nobody came. I made several calls to Colonial Customer service. Sometimes they wouldn't even answer and it would go straight to voicemail. When i did get a hold of them, i was told they had no idea where my things were and they would have to get in touch with the company that was moving my things and would call me back. Never got a call back. Finally 10 days later, i get a call from the driver saying that they would be there the next day. The movers come and dumped all of my disassembled furniture in the apartment and then left. I had to hire somebody else to assemble my furniture. On top of that, these guys damaged my dresser, night stand, and my bed frame. There are dents, scrapes, and scratches all over! Long story short, these guys suck you in with a too-good-to-be-true estimate only to charge you 2-3 times more. The rep on the phone will lie just to get your deposit. These guys will subcontract out your move to another company. Apparently they move other people's stuff while yours things are on their truck and only deliver your stuff to you when it's convenient for them. I have to disagree with the other reviewers. They were friendly and efficient and when I disagreed with the bill, I spoke with a manager. I disputed an extra hour to move my stuff into storage, which they had explained was same as the time to remove the items from my house. I explained that I have a 90 yo house with a narrow staircase and they spent 45 mins just trying to remove a huge bed, whereas they were moving it into an easily accessible storage facility. *CAUSED OVER $8500.00 IN DAMAGE AND WON'T REIMBURSE US!* We hired them back in November based on their great reviews and the fact that they told me they were familiar with moving heavy antique furniture. The 3 guys that showed up were nice, but didn't wrap anything, flipped antique furniture upside down to move it on unpadded skids, didn't pad anything in the truck, and even dropped boxes, breaking antique china. They even left the moving blankets at the apartment, showing not a single thing was padded!! They can have those back if they pay for their damage! They used my Dyson vacuum without permission to clean up wood that chipped off one of my pieces of furniture and broke the vacuum, too. When we got to the house, I told them not to slide anything on the floor because we just had the floors refinished. I even gave them a box of felt sliders to help. They didn't use the sliders and scratched up our newly refinished floors. They left a mattress wrapped in plastic leaning against a hot radiator, and the plastic melted to it. We don't have heat in that bedroom now. Other things were stained and dented. After they were done emptying the truck, one of them handed me a cell phone to pay over the phone. The guy asked how the move went, and I told him I can't inspect everything yet because it was now dark out and we didn't have power on the first floor due to the entire home being in the middle of being required. He said not a problem, call the next day if there were any issues. One of the kids moving us had me sign papers he said were authorization to use the credit card over the phone, and a receipt for the move. The next day I realized there was damage to nearly everything we own, including the house!! I called, explained, Jay never even apologized and said he would be sending out a claim form. 2 weeks later, I still hadn't received it. I called back, he said he wasn't sure, must have been lost in the mail. Called a second time, he said they mailed it again. I wait again, still nothing, call back and get a different guy. He's able to email me the form.. so I'm not sure why it wasn't emailed in the first place. I received the form in a time stamped email 40 days after we moved. The second guy said I needed "lots of pictures and quotes from restorers and comparable items' values" and I told him it would take me a while to gather all of it. AGAIN, they said not a problem, told me to take my time!! I had to call multiple furniture restorers before i was able to find one to come out to the house and look at the damaged furniture, and had to book him a few weeks out. Then I had to go online and research the other damaged items and find comparable things for value. I am a pregnant nurse working 12 hour shifts with a 2 year old at home, but I spent all of the little free time I had compiling everything they asked for. I sent quotes, receipts, pictures, online listings for either actual or nearly identical items. Flawless documentation. Total damage added up to OVER $8500.00 including the DAMAGE TO OUR HOUSE. They took weeks to get back to me and review it, then said they were denying it because 1. I took longer than 30 days to send the form in when it took them 40 days to even get it to me, and they told me to only send it in once I had all the details they asked for. 2. Said I signed a form confirming all items were moved in good condition. They told me I was signing a credit card authorization and receipt in my house with no electricity so I couldn't see what I was signing. 3. They have no proof the items weren't damaged before the move. They could say this with ANY CLAIM. Why would I have an apartment full of only damaged items and cause damage to my own house to fill out a claim form with a moving company?? NO respect for their customers, their belongings, or their homes!! Now I have to spend what little money I have to get a lawyer and try to recoup some of the damage they caused after doing everything they asked for. This company was awful. So unprofessional, terrible communication - could not be bothered to return calls, could not tell me when my move or delivery day would be until the last minute. I had to chase them for everything. My move was estimated in person by someone with 30 years moving experience and that is what my quote was based on. Colonial contracted my move out without telling me! On move day nobody showed up during the 3 hour window I was given, then I get a call from the driver saying his truck broke down and it would be another hour. Then, surprise! This driver is from another moving company entirely and he says my move will be another $1K over what was quoted and won't do a thing until that is agreed to, signed off on, and a 1/3 payment (over $600) is made over the phone to a stranger immediately. Mover scam! I mean what are you going to do, you're stuck, it's moving day everything is arranged and you have to go. Then one guy did all of the work! The driver barely lifted anything. It took all day, I was pitching in to speed things up because they were so late and I had to drive 6 hours immediately afterwards. I asked the driver ahead of time to get copies of weight tallies on delivery proving the weight of my belongings and was never shown anything. Driver claimed 'the other guys weighed the truck' and threw up his hands when I asked. I was never able to get it. I ended up moving much of my own stuff off the truck at delivery because they could not find anyone locally to help and the driver was crying in pain from a bad shoulder injury. My things were damaged throughout from poor handling and a bad leak in the truck. The supposed 'rental' truck that the driver seemed to have a lot of knowledge about and kept calling 'my truck'. At pickup I said my tape was not sticking well and he said, 'don't worry, after being on my truck you won't be able to get it off your stuff' (true). He also mentioned that they charged the other customer (the person whose items took up the rest of the truckload) an extra $500 as well, and forced them to take delivery a day early. Colonial said they work with this company ALL THE TIME. I called Colonial before delivery to ask if things were on the up & up and they vouched for their honesty and what they were doing with the extra $. Total criminals the whole way around. So if you are thinking about a long distance move with Colonial, think again! You WILL be fleeced! read more

They arrived on time as agreed and work started at a good pace. They protected furniture well and packed a 3 bedroom house very efficiently in their truck. 1/3 way through I noticed a drastic change in pace. Work that would have been completed in 4 hours ended up taking the whole day. They even drove slowly during the move, to milk every dime they could get. The owners charged me for minor things they had initially agreed to cover. The movers kept hinting obviously about being tipped . I payed over 3 times the agreed fee- they made arguments that didn't add up. I called the owners who had given me their terms but they wouldn't bend. It was horrific.
