Scam artists. Even their license isn't clear. Universal Moval & Storage, on Southlawn Ln, in Rockville (same company) forfeited their state license & charter for failing to file taxes and they do NOT have a storage warehouse license or comply with any of the legal requirements for maintaining a storage warehouse (not the same as public self storage, they must have a license, provide a written bill of lading listing your property, cannot place a lien on your property for failing to pay monthly storage fees, etc.). Instead, they now use their personal residential condominium as their business address and falsely advertise that they have climate controlled storage (they only have Southlawn Ln and it is not climate controlled, and their residence does not have an adjacent storage area (it's not even zoned for it). They quote prices above what they even advertise. Completely violate the Maryland Movers Act by charging more than double the written estimate. (6 hours labor became 16 hours labor). After offering 1 month free storage, and then $100 per month fee, (they tried to charge $300 illegally against my credit card (it was only used to put up the $100 pre-move required deposit; all else was paid in full by check). There was never an authorization to charge against my credit card and certainly no required signature (which the State's Attorney's Office will follow-up with regarding criminal charges). They broke most of my property. They wouldn't let me have access to my property until I agreed to let them transfer my property to a 3rd party public storage facility (that charges $299/month) and they had made a separate deal with the new owner of my house to remove "debris" only to find out that they got out of having to pay any trash fee because I found a majority of the "debris" in the back of my storage unit so I've been paying to store what they were supposed to dispose of. They showed up with a smaller truck than agreed, and then, when it was suddenly full, they had to leave to unload at storage, and return (3 & 1/2 hours later), but charged me for that time even though there was to be no labor rate to unload and reload from their storage facility. Only labor rate from start to finish at my home. When I pointed out that their initial written estimate was $5/hour higher than their advertised website price, the owner tried to tell me that was the winter rate. I am disabled. They called my sister, who lives 100 miles away, to assure her that they would look after her "disabled" brother trying to get in good with a family member. They also played the "religion" card because we happen to be of the same religion. They were the opposite of looking after the disabled guy, and cheated me at every turn. Most likely, their drivers are not CDL licensed. It seems that when the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (division of US DOT) inspects, they don't inspect local or state requirements such as the driver having a CDL and they don't share the information the local or state police when they discover that information either. At this point, it doesn't look like they'll be around much longer because their newer business license/charter is in trouble now too. It's funny that they still advertise, on their website, under the original Universal Moving & Storage name even though they have no business license for it. The Better Business Bureau has them listed at Universal Movers, aka Universal Moving & Storage, lists their actual Rockville, MD warehouse on Southlawn Ln (they lease, they don't own it) as their business address and not their condo on Praire Rose Ln., in Gaithersburg, MD. They have a -100% negative rating on BBB, yet they have an A- rating. 2 bad reviews and 13 complaints (just in the past 12 months). I do know that I'll never trust anything from BBB.org anymore. read more
