Union is a seriously beautiful spot for dinner or drinks! The huge bar is definitely a centerpiece, and there's plenty of comfortable restaurant seating, perfect for groups or a fun night out. We started the night with drinks: I went for a cold Modelo, while my friends both ordered margaritas, and wouldn't stop raving about how good they were! For appetizers, we shared the Union Trio! Fire roasted tomato salsa, creamy guacamole, and queso served with crisp tortilla chips. All three were fresh and delicious, a great way to kick off the meal. For my main, I mixed things up with a taco trio! Carne Asada (marinated steak, onion, queso fresco, avocado, cilantro), Chicken Tinga (marinated chicken, refried black beans, avocado, greens, queso fresco, cilantro) and Blackened Mahi (mezcal pickled onion, red cabbage, red pepper pico, chipotle sauce, cilantro). The blackened mahi was my hands down favorite. It was super flavorful with just the right amount of heat. My friends tried some awesome dishes too! One had the Coconut Curry Mahi (blackened mahi, jasmine rice, edamame succotash, with a rich coconut curry cream sauce) and the other had the Duck Confit Taco (with cherry salsa, pickled carrot salad, and cilantro-lime creme). First time visit with friends for their "Glamertines" special occasion. The place is a lot bigger than I expected. It had a nice cozy and casual feel. They had a special menu for the night along with their usual menu. Everything looked looked delicious and I ended up getting 3 different tacos. You can order individual/singles with a choice of flour or corn tortilla. I ended up getting the a birria and duck. For the third, I want to say fish but I can't remember if it was fish or a pork. Mind you I also ordered a cocktail so forgive me. My only real complaint was the duck was a bit tough to chew and too salty for my taste. Other than that, the meal was pretty good. My friends and I also tried out their curry cauliflower app and 2 desserts-churro with ice cream and a dessert nacho. Both came topped with a creamy and rich vanilla ice cream. This place is my go to for a fun evening with friends. The food is good, fresh and very flavorful. I don't usually like a lot of fusion restaurants but I think this one does a really good job of balancing Asian and Latino flavors and styles. Very innovative and the drinks are so much fun. First time coming here and I must say I was impressed. The restaurant/bar was very new and nicely decorated. There's 2 hr free parking in the garage nearby. The whole area looks nice and new. The waitress said until recently, the area was a park. The bar looked like a good place to drink but I was only there to eat an early dinner so I had the carnitas and the Peking duck taco. Both dishes were very delicious. I tried all three sauces and couldn't tell which one was the best so used all three of them since they were all tasty and mildly spicy. I probably should have just got the carnitas because I was really full after eating everything. The bartender/waitress was very friendly and great. The bar atmosphere was good too. They had happy hour specials that were good Mon-Friday from 4-6pm which was good drinks and there was a drink and food specials menu as well. Oh man, my meal was great!! Had one Baja (fried flounder) and one Mahi taco and both were awesome. It was more than enough for a lunch meal. Kind of messy, but worth it. We recently had dinner at Union Taco, located at the all new Summit Pointe, in the heart of Chesapeake. We have been here many times since they opened and we have never been disappointed. The staff is friendly, helpful and very prompt. Their ticket times are very fast, so beware if you order a hot appetizer because unless you mention it, you might get your entrees before you finish your appetizer. They recently opened up for outdoor dining over the Summer. One a nice evening, I would definitely consider sitting outside. I'm a big fan of Birria Tacos and they make an excellent version of this classic dish. We always have a great experience here, and I highly recommend checking them out when you're in the area, or even just make a special trip, it's well worth the drive... read more

Sadly I have to update my previous five- star review. Before our most recent visit, we had always visited this place during happy hour and there weren't many people in the restaurant. Last night we went during dinner and it was full of people. Service was atrocious. We were seated and then forgotten about. After sitting there for about 20 minutes, we got up and went to find someone that could help us with drinks. It turned out to be our hostess. Which she did a great job of, but she wasn't our server. The rest of the dinner turned out to be very disappointing. We had to go find someone again when we were ready to order. Drinks were not refilled all night without us asking. Mine sat empty for what seems like forever. And to top the night off, a waitress was bringing beverages to our table and spilled beer all down my back. We let the waiter know, and all he did was bring over a few napkins. So disappointing. Because I really thought this was a great establishment. So I've sadly updated my five star review to a one star. If you want to go, I guess you have to go when they're not busy, because they can't handle a full dining room, and you might go home smelling like beer. read more

Let me start by saying Mateo was great at answering my questions and helping me with the menu. The establishment was nice and spacious. The chicken tortilla soup was really bland, lacking flavor. Came here for dinner with a group of friends. I had made a reservation so we were seated quickly. We were there during happy hour so we tried the $5 margaritas which were good. We also got the union trio for an appetizer. The queso was everyone's favorite out of the three dips. I tried 3 of the tacos: the bulgogi beef, prito hipon, and Korean bbq chicken. The tacos were great and flavorful!! The shrimp was fresh, the sauce on the chicken was yummy. The bulgogi was good, a little over cooked. We got the Brookie skillet for desert which was yummy!! A great addition to the Chesapeake Greenbrier area with Union Taco being their 2nd location. The menu has been elevated to like a fine dining experience. The ambiance is beautiful. This is a solid place for good tacos, bowls, burritos, drinks, appetizers and more! The drink selection is insane. You will find something. They also have happy hours and $1 off tacos on Tuesdays. The management and chef take great pride in their dishes. My hubs has a favorite go to taco and he noticed they changed up the recipe a bit. When the management was walking around checking on people, my hubs asked about his taco. They actually said they did changed it up! And they welcomed his feedback because now they can make adjustments. Wow, they really care! Thought it was time for me to try this location I've been to the one in Norfolk. Very very nice area. Lots of brand new restaurants. Once you walk in you're greeted right away, there was plenty of seating, and a very nice bar. We were sat right away. The food was very good. We ordered a few appetizers we tried the street corn fritters, which were very good. And of course we did chips and queso cheese. I ordered a margarita seeing as we arrived early enough to enjoy happy hour! I ordered my absolute favorite Birra Tacos with double rice no beans. They didn't disappoint. The rice could use a little help. It was very hard and crispy. My friend ordered a bowl it had steak, chicken and shrimp (3) small shrimp she was very disappointed that it only had 3 shrimp. She agreed that the rice was over cooked and really crispy and hard. Our waiter was friendly, but at first he seemed like he was in a rush. He messed up my drink order. But that's okay. At first he visited our table frequently, but as soon as our food arrived and we needed him he was no where to be found. On the plus side before our meals came out the chef came out and stopped and talked to a few tables! He was very nice! I love to see a chef come out the kitchen to check on guests. Dessert time boy was I impressed I have to say out of all the Mexican restaurants I've been to this was hands down one of the top three desserts I've had!! Churro Sunday was so good. Usually I only eat 1/2 but not this time I ate my whole dessert! My friend had the key lime pie she said it was overly sweet. She also stated the slice was very small for the price. I've visited Union Taco at Summit Pointe in Chesapeake numerous times since they opened in November. Because of their proximity to my office (I walk there almost every Tuesday), their awesome Taco Tuesday deal, their service at the bar and their consistently good food, I have nothing but high praise for this establishment. It's become my go-to Tuesday lunch spot. I figured I'd check them out because I've never made it to the Norfolk Union Taco (parking is an issue on 25th St). An employee at nearby Los Burritos actually told me about Union, so my curiosity got the better of me. During my first visit (12/5/23), I was helped at the bar by Samantha. She is originally from the Norfolk Union and was covering shifts in Chesapeake until they were fully staffed and ready to go. Sam is a bar vet - she's loquacious, friendly and does a great job at upselling while relating to her customers. She made me feel at home, and I was happy to check out their Taco Tuesday special ($1 off all tacos, all day). On that day, I tried 3 different tacos - Duck Confit, Mahi and Prito Hipon (garlic fried shrimp). What caught my eye are the numerous proteins they offer (they also offer a veggie taco). And after enjoying those 3 tacos, I decided I would return enough times to try the remaining proteins on the menu. Union occasionally offers special tacos, like a Shrimp Po Boy taco, or a Korean BBQ Chicken taco. Usually, a staff member would tell me about them, since I don't see a specials board inside. But the bar staff, comprised of Amber, Brent, Brie, Deyontae, & Shannon, are all sweethearts and rock it out. I forgot to mention - this location is put together well. I like the L-shaped bar, the high shelves it has for various liquors, and the dining area is compact, yet spacious. This venue looks clean and organized, but I haven't seen the bathroom yet. If nothing else, Union is clean and appears to be well-maintained. The only issue I've run into (and it will happen at any restaurant if you visit often enough) is sometimes their kitchen will get in the weeds. There were 2 occasions in which I've ordered within 2-5 minutes of sitting down, then wait another 30-40 mins before my entree arrived. Those two times I've had to ask for my food to go since I only have 60 minutes for lunch. I'm patient, so it wasn't a big deal. But if it's busy, it appears their BOH isn't equipped to handle (Deyontae did tell me the BOH is understaffed, so there's that). Overall, though, Union is an excellent place to dine. This isn't a traditional Mexican restaurant (they offer poutine and ahi tuna tataki, for cryin' out loud, haha!), and their price points target a higher income clientele, but they provide good service and serve good food in a clean venue. So the location of this place is amazing in the Summit point area of Chesapeake. It was easy to find parking as it's right across from a parking garage and the interior of the restaurant is super cute. I wasn't super impressed with the food while it wasn't bad it wasn't anything to write home about. I did have a very nice Margarita that was strawberry basil. Would I come back here? Stumbled on this gem while in Chesapeake and didn't know it was here. Came on a Friday evening and to our surprise it was still happy hour. The place was pretty busy with others eating dinner. We went straight to the bar for some dranks. Our bartender, Brent was friendly and gave us the specials and recommendations for a snack. We ended up having 2 margaritas and a shot of tequila and to share we got the cassava poutine. The poutine was a pretty large appetizer to share the cassava was hot and crispy and had plenty of toppings along with the perfectly cooked egg on top. The margs weren't that strong but no worries we had a shot on the side as well. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The restaurant was modern, clean and had a nice hip vibe. I met a friend for an early dinner to celebrate our birthdays. She ordered Birria Tacos. She enjoyed them and had leftovers for lunch the next day. She also had the Happy Hour margarita which she said was perfect. I was trying to decide on the trio of Shrimp Poor Boy tacos or the Proto Hipon. I ended up ordering one of each Al la carte. I am so glad I did. They were both absolutely delicious. Staff and the manager were all amazing. The only downside was they do not have unsweetened tea. They only have sweet tea and sodas. Normally it is the opposite. But it worked out fine. I drank water which was a healthy option. I can't wait to go back, soon, to have more delicious tacos. Also, while I didn't try them, the refried black beans are made from scratch in house. My friend said they were delicious. She said she rarely eats more than a few bites. The rave is real! Had the tako (grilled octopus) tacos and they were sublime!! Got 3 tako tacos to get $1 off, $17 and change before tip but so worth it especially when they piled the octopus high, that you can't properly roll the corn tortillas, you still need a fork to pick up those pieces falling left and right. I'm really on the fence with Union Taco, so I'll sit at 3 stars with plans to return. The happy hour prices are awesome, the drink and food menu look great and what we ate was really good. The service and expo left room for improvement. I dined on a recent Friday evening with some friends and we sat at a bar hightop. When I arrived around 6pm, it was quite busy, which is always good to see. By the time we left around 8pm, it has slowed down significantly. We were greeted right away and drink orders were taken. Our table enjoyed cervezas and margs and we ordered the Union Trio chip platter for the table. The guac was good, but I wasn't particularly blown away by their salsa. For entrees, I tried the Vegetariana bowl, which was really tasty. The roasted cauliflower was the kicker for me. So delicious! Friends enjoyed classic, al pastor and carne asada tacos, which also looked good and were devoured. The timing of our meal and our overall service were subpar. We received our chip appetizer right away, but we waited almost 45 minutes for our food without any explanation or apology. Even a second round of drinks took almost 15 minutes. Our server never acknowledged the lengthy waits and really seemed checked out throughout our visit. She wasn't particularly engaging or pleasant during our encounter. Stopped in for lunch and got a trio of tacos. The place is really nicely decorated, it feels modern and on the upscale side. They have a nice Tequila bar with some high end stuff, and a ln ok whiskey side too. The service was on the slow side this day, I'm not sure if this is normal, but we came in the later side of lunch, around 1:30pm. It didn't look or feel packed, but we had to wait almost an hour for our food to come out. The tacos we ok, but I've definitely had better. With the ambiance, and prices I expected more. Also I asked for corn tortillas, which I didn't get. I think this spot has enough promise for me to give it another chance though. read more

I have heard mixed reviews of Union Taco. I wanted to find out myself and I'm glad I did. I was planning a dinner for about 23 people. I came in personally to make reservations. The manager Daniel was super nice enough to put us in the computer and also show me if the area was good enough. They did not have a large table to accommodate us, but they did have separate 4 tops to keep us in the same location. It was perfect for our party of 23. They were nice enough to allow delivery of a large birthday cake. Our server Isaiah was wonderful. I can't remember exactly what everyone else ordered but we ordered: Thai cauliflower for appetizer classic chorizo taco The Union bowl with cauliflower rice elote burger with curly fries kids cheeseburger with white rice My Union bowl was delicious! My family and I stopped into Union Taco on a Friday night and it was pretty quiet. The atmosphere was welcoming and really tied in the theme. The list of Tequila was extensive and my Margarita was delicious and strong. Unfortunately that was where the positives stopped. They were out of mint for my husbands drink but after he switched his order, multiple other tables and people at the bar had the same drink. The food was meh at best. There wasn't much GF offerings which is ok, I always find something I can have but for my husband and daughter, their food was also just ok. The service was very slow and once our food was delivered, we were never asked if we wanted more drinks, (we did), if we wanted desert (we did) and the bill took forever to get to us. We finally flagged someone down to get the check. Unless all we are looking for is a margarita, we will likely choose somewhere else. read more

In terms on tacos, my favorites are the shrimp po-boy and the California club. They were DELICIOUS! If you like margaritas, they make theirs very well. I like the traditional house margaritas, but my friend had the strawberry one and really enjoyed it. Service has been great the past 2 times I went! I hope it stays that way. The serving was so much smaller compared to when I've dined there in person. I paid the same price and expected a larger portion. 3rd time going, and it keeps getting better. We made a reservation ahead of time, but it really wasn't necessary for the time we went (6:00 on Saturday). We were seated promptly and greeted by our server, who was a delight. We ordered the Union Trio, per usual, and it meets every expectation from a chips and dip platter. We each ordered three tacos, a la carte, to try different things. The best one of the night was the duck confit. Cooked to be tender and with just the right amount of spice. I did get the tako (octopus) but there was so much extra on the taco, it really detracted from the octopus. By the time we left, the place was nearly full. The salsa had a heavy consistency that was almost like marinara in color and more of a smoked flavor. The chips were also not sturdy or salted. This is the second time I've been to UT, but the first time to this specific location. I have decided to dub their food as "hit or miss". We came here last night and got seated right away. I ordered the Matador and hubs got the Strawberry basil margarita. Both drinks were very good, but my Matador was basically all ice and gone in seconds. We asked if they served chips & salsa and the guy said "oh sure!" but didn't say there was a $2 for it. Service was...fine. I don't know if they were short staffed or what but it took 10 minutes to get water. He did acknowledge he would be over when he could. I was just still surprised by it. I got the Gringo steak bowl and my husband got the birria tacos. The bowl was ok. Nothing to write home about. The brussels sprout shavings were brown and the rice was uncooked. Yikes. My husband's tacos on the other hand were very flavorful and probably the best thing I've had at UT so far. His rice was also...crunchy. The server came back as we were assessing the rice and knew something wasn't right. He said other people have said the same thing and said he would "see what he could do". Well, he didn't do anything because we paid full price for everything. At least the chips could have been comped. We ended with the churro ice cream sundae. Honestly this is probably the best thing on the menu and the only reason I'd return, LOL. Wow. That thing is amazing! Overall, this place isn't worth the money IMO.
