Oro Azteca continues to crush it with speedy service, friendly staff, and consistent food. This is definitely a family friendly restaurant so don't come here if large groups of jolly people and kids moving around bother you. The noise level can slightly be on the encoder side due to this, but it most certainly is a happy restaurant. The interior still slightly resembles the old Pizza Hut. Our group of 5 was immediately seated and promptly attended by a server who brought our drinks. Food selections are plentiful on their bright and colorful menu. It will take you a few minutes to browse all the selections. The menu is laid out well with dinner combinations, lunch selections, vegetarian, etc. Their prices are definitely a few dollars lower than other local Mexican restaurants. So if you are pinching your pennies you will appreciate that. This time I enjoyed the Mole Blanco. This selection is grilled chicken covered in cheese sauce with beans and rice with tortillas. The portion was huge. They also didn't skimp on the cheese sauce which was nice. This is my son's favorite thing to order at a Mexican restaurant (minus the beans) and he raved about his dinner. He also noted that it was about $3 cheaper than other local Mexican restaurants. Additional orders at our table were the Taco Salad and Fajitas for two. Both were happily enjoyed. Came here for lunch during a visit to the area and it wasn't bad. The service was good but the food wasn't the best. Idk if it was a bad day or what but I wasn't impressed to the max. The waiter was amazing and gave great service. The food was a different story. I got the chimichangas. I asked for no red sauce and asked for them to be extra crispy. Neither happened. The chimichangas came out with red sauce and wasn't crispy at all. The meat inside was kinda bland and greasy. But the side of rice was a great amount and wasn't bad in taste. I've eaten here twice. The first was for lunch and I ordered the enchiladas verde and sopapillas. The food came out very quick and was delicious. The enchiladas had a great flavor profile. As for the sopapillas, I would have rather had them without the cream and sprinkles and instead with just cinnamon-sugar sprinkled on. The second visit I got the burrito California. First off I am embarrassed that I have never left them a Yelp review! We have been coming here regularly for the better part of 3 years now . Ok that's out of the way. This place is in a very unassuming standalone building off Hampton Blvd near Navy Federal, across from the fire station. Inside it's your classic East Coast Mexican joint. Booths and table seating available. It's great for big groups. We've taken groups of 10 or more before no problem. It's not a huge place but they have some big tables. They give you fresh chips, salsa and the Hampton Roads white sauce (if you're not from around here just try it you'll love it) when you sit down. Refills on drinks are free. Kids meals don't include a drink. Kids meals here are legit. Like a full size taco and serving of rice and beans is the favorite of our little minion. Middle minion likes the chicken burrito wet with red sauce and a side of rice. They are pretty accommodating on making the taco soft vs crunchy for the kids. Wife and I usually share the Oro Azteca special. It's a TON of food. Our second favorite is the Nachos supreme. A lot of times I'll get this to share with my son with a taco on the side and we're both stuffed. Now let me say if you're looking for West Coast style this is not the place. I am a lover of all types of food and don't compare East Coast to West Coast Mexican food. I love both . After 2 dismal experiences here with the food..I could see they cut a lot of corners with the quality of food. My biggest thing about any Mexican restaurant is, they must have fresh guacamole. Fresh guac is slightly chunky, with fresh lime juice, tomatoes and jalapeño. The guac at this place looks straight up like a bowl of toothpaste. Sh-t was embarrassing. During my 2nd visit, I ordered a Quesadilla Chihuahua with beef and cheese, served with rice and guac and side salad. Quesadilla barely had any cheese in it. While I was at this work conference, our group stayed at the Norfolk Navy Lodge. For our team dinners, we mainly ate at restaurants within the surrounding areas like Norfolk and Portsmouth. Our first team dinner was at the Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives tv show featured restaurant Dirty Buffalo, which was a buffalo wings restaurant. Our second dinner was at the Dock of the Bay, which was seafood. Our third dinner was at The Bier Garden, which was German food. Our group decided for our fourth and final dinner that we had to have Mexican food. I am so thankful they chose to eat at Oro Azteca for that Mexican food fix. For anyone staying at the Norfolk Navy Lodge, I highly recommend that you include Oro Azteca as one of your stops for lunch or dinner. Oro Azteca is real close to the Navy Lodge, so close that you could walk there, but if you're going to drive, it's less than half a mile from the Lodge. If you're exiting the Lodge, make sure to make a left and immediately after the Navy Federal, the restaurant will be on the left side. Look for a bright yellow building that appears to be an old Pizza Hut sit down restaurant. In the evening, you'll also see the neon red and green lights surrounding the restaurant. The Oro Azteca outside sign clearly communicates that this is a Mexican restaurant with traditional Mexican images. Once you enter inside the restaurant, the vibrant colors on the walls and the multitude of hung Mexican artwork indicate that Mexican food is their specialty. I was intrigued by their selection of beautiful artwork. There is plenty of seating inside of the restaurant and they quickly accommodated our large group of 15. One of the reasons for my high 5-star rating was the outstanding customer service we received from our main server as well as the army of servers who quickly brought out our food. Our server without complaint was able to do separate checks and when we needed something like refills or more chips, he quickly took care of us. This server should definitely be applauded. Service was pretty fast here in a positive way without affecting the deliciousness of the food. The complimentary chips, red salsa, and white sauce they provided were very tasty. The chips were warm, fresh, and crunchy. I devoured the chips quickly and when we asked for a refill, they brought out the chips the way I described them above. The red salsa wasn't too spicy, but the white sauce was the more spicy of the two. Both the chips and sauces really went well with your meal. I'm from California, so I'm a strong critic of Mexican restaurants in other states. We live so close to the Mexican border and have experienced some of the best Mexican food restaurants in California that I'm skeptical of restaurants not too close to a border. I can assure you that you should not be skeptical of Oro Azteca. Their Mexican food is truly authentic. Oro Azteca has an extensive menu, which made it difficult for me to order, so I decided on a combination dinner. I ordered the #17, which was one chalupa, one chili relleno, and one beef taco. When my plate came out, the food was beautiful. Not only was it pretty looking, it was so tasty. The chili relleno was the star with the finger licking red sauce and cheese. Oro Azteca is not stingy when it comes to packing each item with vegetables, cheese, and sauces. Make sure to scoop up the sauces, cheese, and leftover vegetables with the chips. I cleaned off my plate because everything was that good. It was a great trip to Virginia for training. I learned a lot and filled my brain with knowledge. I also filled my stomach with delicious food. Oro Azteca is definitely a restaurant that you should visit because of the whole package: the decor and ambience, stellar customer service, and amazing Mexican food. read more

Lol I also liked the fact that they gave you "free" chips with salsa and queso dip. Don't be fooled tho, if you come here just for the chips and don't get anything else you will be charged I think $3.99. I had the honor of having the burrito California and hubby got their burrito azteca. Not guna lie tho I was not a fan of their burrito California, the flavor to me seemed off.
