I've been sooo timid about getting my hair done after years of bad haircuts LOL Alexa (@bleachedknucklesss) gave me a cut and a temp dye (best rec if you're indecisive about going lighter or darker). I tried extensions at Union by Lora originally for an event, and I have been going back religiously for more than a year now. She places them perfectly, so they are comfortable and they never show. I received an awful haircut, and it was overall a terrible experience. My hair stylist had a pretty significant tremor, and seemed very distracted the whole time. I asked for layers and he did not stop at all to ask if the length/layers were what I wanted. I couldn't see the layers until the end of the haircut. It was not at all what I wanted. This visit I was really looking for a good consultation because I have a fashion color but have been worried about the health and integrity of my hair. My stylist Joseph was so thorough, going over my options and really prioritizing not only the health of my hair but the steps I wanted to make now for my future goals. Thankfully he reassured me that I did not need to go back to natural to protect my hair but instead gave me tips and scheduled me for a future service to do partial highlights instead of damaging my hair more with a bleach and tone! Sarah- my hairdresser was booked so she referred me to Savannah to color my hair. I asked for a chocolate lilac color and showed her a picture from Pinterest.. the color turned out exactly what I wanted! Perfection I must say, I don't want to wash my hair to ruin it. Savannah is also really really nice and when the first gloss wasn't just quite the right color she took me back to the bowl to layer another gloss to make it just Right and we all know not many colorist would do that unless they really care and she really cares! I've had positive previous experiences at Union Salon (South), but I was honestly very disappointed by my recent color appointment here. I am 5 months postpartum & it really isn't in my budget to pay for color right now, but I decided to splurge as a rare effort to connect with my new postpartum identity, because my kids are naturally the priority these days. I looked at Yelp reviews and scheduled an appointment with someone for $350, but then felt too stressed about money & rescheduled with someone else for $300. I wanted very natural highlights/balayage that would cover some white hairs & brighten up my dark blonde a bit, and also grow out well because I only give myself one expensive hair appointment every year or so. Between appointments, my husband has been trimming my hair-- just what I can afford right now. Anyway, long story short, I left my appointment looking approximately the same as I did when I walked in. I can still see the same grown out highlights I could see before, and don't look/feel any brighter. My stylist (who was otherwise nice) even said she went conservative and made it a bit dark, but then seemed to want to convince me it was fine and " as we'd discussed ". She offered to re-wash my hair because she said that would lighten it a bit more, but that wasn't something I couldn't do at home (& it didn't change anything at home). She dried my hair but didn't offer any waves or curls. I tried to see the transformation & thought maybe I just needed to get a better look at home, so I eventually said it was OK (what else do you do?). And then she charged me $350 (because her price was " starting at $300 "... but I would've really appreciated transparency on cost above that) & asked me to pay her on Zelle or Venmo, which felt weird, so I under tipped her a bit and that didn't feel great either. Maybe I could've been more adamant that I wasn't happy, but once someone sounds like they're doing damage control listing what they'd done & repeating " as we'd discussed, " it doesn't feel like a priority that you like the end result; it felt like she'd already put her time in. I also haven't had a hair appointment I was unhappy with since I was a kid, so I didn't really know what to do. So here I am with my same postpartum hair (until maybe another year from now), out $400 that I may as well have spent on my kids. Ugh. read more
