Another beautiful Georgia State Park, we spent most of the day exploring this park, it's another example of what the people of Georgia can be so proud of. The ammenties here are nothing less than outstanding with beautifully maintained hiking trails and meticulous maintained common areas. We spent a week in the area and only sampled a small part of what's offer here but it definitely checks all the boxes for a return trip. The staff here was so gracious and was quick to answer all our questions and provided some helpful tips to make our visit enjoyable and was eager to share the history of the area. The landscape is a drastic change from what we experience in our home state of Florida with the higher elevations and moderate temperatures and humidity which made this visit special and a real treat I can't wait to return... read more

I stayed in barrel cabin no. 1. It was grungy and reeked of old bacon grease. The comforter had brown stains. The stove was dirty. I wiped the kitchen counters with disinfectant wipes and they turned brown. The bottom of the dishwasher cutlery basket was broken in multiple spots. The kitchen had cobwebs attached to the wall and light fixture. The coating on the cookware was so scratched, it was unusable. Overall, the park looks unkempt and neglected. It is managed by Coral hospitality. I've never seen such a neglected Georgia state park. read more

We drove through Unicoi State Park on the way to Anna Ruby Falls! The lake is absolutely beautiful, peaceful and scenic, with plenty of picnic tables to sit and relax. NA.... DO NOT CAMP HERE. First of all gonna start with the bathroom being the scary set for a murder horror film. DIRTY!!! Old 1970's raggedy bathroom!!! busted missing floor tiles, busted leaky crusty old shower heads that sprayed everywhere, dilapidated bathroom sink and toilets, no urnal - piss on the seat, all the floors were wet from the crazy shower heads. They literally had two walmart space heaters hanging from the ceiling for winter heat. It was summer no ventilation or ac and was like a Sauna in there from people taking showers mixed with odorous bowel movements!!! Only positive to the whole "comfort station" was it did have hot water!! Second they had DANGEROUS dead trees and limbs hanging over camp sites, one tree landed on neighbors beautiful truck. Two more huge trees came down the next day. Third.... BEARS. Someone in the camp was harassed every night during our 7 night stay by a bear, we knew ahead of time and took everything out of our popup, all utensils, microwave, and soap. Locked everything in our car! First night the bear shook our camper looking a snack. I had to get up in my skivies to yell and scream to chase him off. The last night three sites down the bear got into some coolers, they didn't know! Sleep with both eye's open! Warning The route from TN/NC took us via Russell scenic hwy, hog pen gap this crazy mountain, we're local and used to mountain's this was extra. motors revving like 3500 rpm at a crawl for 7 -10 miles. the rig in site next to us melted the rear calipers and had to go to the shop. The route 17/75 from Hiwasee Ga was safer. We do a-lot of camping and this was the worst place we've ever stayed. Possibly the other campground loop has a newer bathroom? Husband and I stayed two nights at Unicoi Lodge; our experience was excellent. The lodge is currently experiencing some updating but staff was exceptional. We arrived early evening pretty tired from our trip from central Florida but were made welcome from the first encounter with Zachariah at Reception to the dining facility. Breakfast was very good (big shout out to Chelsey, Chris, Nae (?), and Susan!). Also the General Manager, Sharon. Our room was clean and comfortable with a walk-in shower. Only one tiny complaint: we reserved a king bed with ADA facilities. Unfortunately, the only king beds that fit that requirement were on the second floor, which was not possible for my husband to negotiate without an elevator. [Insert sad face here] All in all, we look forward to returning to Unicoi Lodge to experience their updated facility. read more

Meh. I was really disappointed in the lodge. There was a conference taking place and parking was ungodly. Couldn't leave the lodge because I'd lose my parking spot, and was told the shuttle wasn't running because of the conference. It finally started running later and the driver was super nice. It was cold and rainy so there was nothing to do since I didn't want to go drinking in town. Thought I might, at least, sit in front of a fireplace and crochet but none of them were lit. The tavern wasn't open and the restaurant only served mediocre food off of a buffet. It does not seem the lodge is equipped to handle conferences because everything else came to a screeching halt. After the conference ended, the whole place felt like a shopping mall that was on the verge of closing. The highlight of the trip was the story told by the shuttle driver about the couple who were camping, and the lady woke up in the middle of the night thinking her husband was nuzzling her neck only to realize there was a bear on the other side of the tent. They got up and tried to scare it away, but it wasn't leaving until it ate the rotisserie chicken that they'd left in the cooler. The room was spotlessly clean. The beds were comfortable, but the bedding was sparse. All in all, if someone offered to take me there again, all expenses paid, I'd stay home with the weenie dog. read more

This is a nice State Park located just about 4 miles from Helen and that is the reason why we booked two nights here and that is exactly why the price/value is high, location, location, location other than that 64 per night is a little steep. The fourth star is for location Sites are very level and are surrounded by a six by six lumber to contain the gravel when it rains with a nice 6 inch corrugated drainage for runoff water to drain underneath the pad but lack of maintenance prevents the water from draining properly and our site was flooded on the second night of our stay because the mouth of the drain was totally clogged up. Not much of a view either, our site was surrounded just like all the others by the thick forest providing a nice lush feeling. Spent our time in Helen like most everyone else read more

Unicoi State Park has alot to offer for the activities for the whole family. I spent 4 days in the area, hiking, wandering, and just some relaxing. We stayed in the barrel looking cottages, you have to stay at least 2 or more days. Kinda pricey, military receive 25% off which is a plus. The views were spectacular, we daily walked the lake. Keep in mind cell phone service is Zero depending were you at in the park. Check in/out: easy, they explain and give you maps to the whole park, and will recommend places, you are minutes from Helen, GA where there are good foodie stops, 90 min from Atlanta. Cottage: Big kitchen with coffee, no cream or sugar, clean, roomy, fireplace/ matches no wood, very warm & cozy electric heat. Bed was comfortable, nice size bathroom. The lake was at my backdoor, I enjoyed my views daily. I posted a video on my UTube channel if you wanna see the outside/ inside close and personal. (Dani Derives). Restaurant: Gets a 1 star*, We arrived at 7pm, they close at 8pm. The buffet was open but the food was cold and dried up. I asked the waitress if they were going to put more food out, she stated Yes, but this didn't happen. The fresh sea bass was tasty, but I was so disappointed that I paid $17.95...plus tax. I completed the survey but haven't heard anything from them. Plenty of parking toward the back of the dining hall. Park: Beautiful prk, lots of ourdoorsy activities to do, zip lines, rockwall, fishing, hiking, biking, lot of trails, and a beach. Grab and envelope for your $5 and deposit it in the box -- honor system, sort of, but you'll want to tear of the receipt, punch the day of week and keep it on your person. Nice covered shooting area and concrete paths to sheltered, large, hung Morrell bag targets. A few different distances to shoot at the range maybe 10, 20, 30 and about 40 yds... I received a distasteful message from a Yelper Mike D., calling me derogatory names because my reviews are "biased", that I "make Yelpers out to be banjo playing and RV living" and I do not know why...... those are negative things.Kudos to those who have patience to play an instrument, I have an acoustic that after 2 lessons I threw in the towel.And a domicile on wheels,travel anywhere you please? How invigorating! I recommend committing yourself some time in nature! Even those with their own personal chefs ,frequent stays at the Grand Del Mar,driving custom-made italian cars should find peace in the good ole' outdoors. With that said, I love primitive camping, roughin' it so you will, and want to share with you my experience at Unicoi! ****THIS REVIEW IS FOR CAMPING AS WELL AS THE LODGE! My first night was on a Thurs.which is $15+a $5 parking fee for each car. Then for the weekend price goes up at $35 a night. Mind you this does not include a electric or water hook up, which I find very pricey, but there are bathrooms and showers provided for the primitive camping. It had two stalls for showers, one for handicap, and the water came out warm but not hot. Each site includes a firepit with a grill rack and a picnic table. They do have wood and firestarter log available for purchase in the lobby. I recommend the fire starter which is $6 each. They do have recycling and trash conveniently located steps away. They were having a "Winter Special" for their lodge that weekend,$66 for a night, taxes/fees included which I think was a great deal. With accordance to my birthday I thought it'd be a treat.This has been my 1st time staying at a lodge which brought some high expectations. But this is where mostly the star rating fell short. Its similar to a dingy Ramada Inn, hall ways and room itself had a melancholy feel, nothing warm or inviting to it. I guess you get what you pay for but if thats a special price, then I wouldn't spend anymore than that.It provided a coffee machine with complementary coffee, 2 water bottles, and some toiletries. Shower pressure was very light and water warm at best. For recreational activities, I did not hike their paved trails or zip lining that they offer, but I did visit Anna Ruby Falls. They do charge a separate entrance fee even though its in the park but not on the weekdays. It was absolutely beautiful, a very easy beginner hike to it and a creek streaming all through out my exploration. They have a gift shop for last minute camping essentials, souvenirs, and lots of information on wildlife and the agriculture in Georgia. TIP: If you want to see waterfalls, they have a brochure in the lobby of those near the park, disclosing difficulty of hike, length,height, and directions to each from Unicoi. There was a handful of waterfalls I never heard of even in my 2 week long research on the waterfalls in GA, so it came in handy for fun last min. sights! read more

What can I say about Unicoi State Park that hasn't already been said. It is a wonderful and beautiful park ran by the state of Georgia. Unicoi State Park offers a little bit of something for everyone. At Unicoi you can hike, bike, fish, camp, swim, or just plain be lazy if you like. This past weekend we went camping at Unicoi and enjoyed hiking, fishing, and being lazy while we were there. The campsites are great, we were able to place 2 tents in one site, hang up a hammock, and build a big campfire in the fire pit; it also had a build in picnic table in the site. A few yards away from the campsite was a very nice (but small) lake which had a trail to hike on leading around it, also was able to catch a huge .10 lb crappie out of it. While roughing it in the outdoors we loaded up the suv and headed for the town of Helen (a whole mile away). In Helen we were able to enjoy some of the local flavors of town such as German sausage, German beer, German music, and other scenery that the town offers. Once back at camp we cooked dinner over the open fire pit and were worn out. Needing a shower badly I had to only walk about 10 yards away to the public showers near the campground. So while you are "roughing" it, you can also pamper yourself as well. Unicoi State Park is a wonderful place and the only issue we had the whole time we were there is the other campers. If you go during peak season be prepared to deal with lots of people camping out around you. Other than that, it is a nature lover's and sportsman's paradise. read more

Hiking trails near a grand lake, the falls and the alpine town of Helen. The name Unicoi of course comes from the Cherokee language. I'm actually 1/16th Cherokee, not by heritage, but from that one time my jeep crashed and the doctors couldn't get all the shrapnel out. There are Some facilities like cabins, a lodge, campsites, picnic shelters, a conference center and a restaurant (which is quite expensive). Go ziplining if you feel adventurous. It has its ups and downs, but is one way of getting the vacation off the ground. You can also go hiking, swimming and fishing. Apparently there are plenty of trout around. Free to pass through, but $5 if you are stopping. read more

1 bedroom barrel cabin has mildew all over shower curtain the stove is very old and filthy. The towels are very rough and have holes in them. The only item provided for the $12 lodge fee is a $5 park pass good for your entire stay. The cabins do not get internet or have phones so why do we pay the fee. No water, coffee, newspaper, infused water, bottled water or any other item they list in included and employees have no idea when you ask about it. After 30 years I think I am done with Unicoi. Stay somewhere else get your $5 park pass and hike the area. I have photos of shower curtain and stove from 2 years ago and nothing was corrected and looks the same only the mildew is worse now. read more

Me and my family are staying at the RV Park which is very clean and is worth 5 stars on it own. This review is for the state park fly fishing instructor. Tim is very knowledgeable and helpful. We were a little far from the fishing hole so Tim came and picked us up in his Gator! He then gave us about 30 mins of instruction including knot tying and casting. He took us to a nice honey hole and have enough fish for the night! I highly recommend signing up for one of the parks instructional courses. read more

Just returned from a 2.5 day retreat at Unicoi Lodge. Beautiful scenery and lake. The lodge facilities are aged but are in generally good condition. Still, that cost them a star. Had to request toilet paper right after the rooms had been cleaned. The staff were congenial and helpful. There was a delay in getting our rooms ready at check-in time but it was resolved by the time we returned from a walk around the peaceful waters of the lake. The highlight of this visit was not the zip lines or hiking trails. It was the expertly prepared buffet meals. For a resort feeding large groups in bulk the buffet breakfasts, lunches and dinners were a fantastic, delicious and plentiful (yeah, it's a buffet). There are at least two tasty soups, home made biscuits, three entrees, starches and veggies. Grits, crisp bacon, sausage gravy and cherry covered cheese blintzes are available. There is a well stocked salad bar that has crisp lettuce, cherry tomatoes, sliced black olives and mushrooms. There are also artichoke hearts and a variety of dressings- emphasis on FRESH! Friday night they had whole, fried lake trout with a cornmeal crust. It tasted awesome. The dining room staff were outstanding. Constantly refilling beverage glasses, clearing used plates and just darn friendly folks. They have a scrumptious selection of deserts including generous slices of cakes and pies plus ice cream. Unicoi State park is a great state park with a lot of activities for the active family. We spent 3 nights in one of their smith creek cabins over Fall break the first weekend in October. Fair warning, the smith creek cabins are farther away from the lodge, the hiking trails, most of the activities, and ZERO CELL SERVICE! I had great cell service around the lake, at the lodge, etc, but at the smith creek cabins there was None! That might appeal to you, to completely disconnect. It would me, except my dog sitter back in Atlanta really needed to get a hold of me while we were gone. Also we had two rainy days, and no tv, no wireless, no cell service, no board games, made it a bit harder to be so disconnected. Our cabin kitchen was well equipped and we had no problem cooking all our meals. The big wooden fireplace was great for building fires. The beds were pretty comfortable, about what I expect from state park beds. Bathrooms were fine, although the grout between the tub and tile walls could use some love. The lodge has a restaurant on the third floor serving buffet meals. We didn't try it but I heard from others the trout was good. There is an activity center on the third floor that you can sign up for any of the paid activities like zip lining or ropes course. Back to the park! There is a gorgeous lake with a beach for swimming! They rent non motorized paddle boats and canoes! There is Anna Ruby Falls which is gorgeous and a short handicap accessible hike. Great playgrounds for the younger kids. There are bike trails, nature hikes, zip lining, ropes course, archery, Rockwall climbing, and fishing for the bigger kids. You are only a 5 minute car ride from Helen if you want to dine out, grab some groceries, hit the pharmacy or go tubing down the river. At only 90 minutes from atlanta with little traffic (Haaaaaa!), it's an easy park to check out! read more

The beach area is small and way too crowded on the Fourth of July. There are plenty of picnic spots but none were available.

We just stayed here for 2 nights to see Helen on the way back home to FL. This review could of gone either way, it started out as 2 stars, but ultimately thanks to a guy who I believe may be the park manager (I don't remember his name but I will refer to him as the manager form now on) it went up to a 4. The place was packed, I think there was some event or something going on because when we booked online there were very few spots available. We have a 27ft travel trailer, 31ft from bumper to hitch. Normally I book the largest spot we can just to have room around our site, however all they had was a 30ft spot so I booked it. I figured 1 foot wouldn't really make much of a difference. We get to the office and the lady there was not the friendliest, however she checks us in and unlike most parks where you are assigned a spot, they just gave us a map and said find any empty white spot (they spots are color coated by category I guess) and park there. We are now left to drive all over this damn park trying to find a white empty spot. The roads are crazy narrow and the spots are TINY. We could not find any empty spots, however I'm pretty sure there is no way we would fit even if we were 20ft especially with our truck. At this point we are extremely frustrated and this is where things take a turn for the better. It seems the manager was in his truck driving around and saw us struggling. He pulled over and told us there was no way we would be able to get our trailer into one of those spots. He then guided us to a different spot that was MUCH larger than all the others and told us we could have that spot for our stay (even though there was nothing else available online). He said he checked and we would be fine staying in that spot for our 2 days and he even helped us back in to the spot. I'm not sure what category spot that was but it was great. Very large, plenty of room for our trailer and truck and right by the main road to get in and out. We enjoyed the remainder of our stay. The park itself is very nice although we did not get a chance to explore that much of it. Right next to the town of Helen so its a great place to stay if visiting there. read more

Beautiful park in north GA. It's literally 3 minutes from downtown Helen, and just worth going. there are a few different hikes for different levels. If you just want to walk around the lake, thats very easy. Its called the Lake loop trail. 2 hours of walking around the lake, there are docks you can walk out on that offer pretty views , and some woodsy areas. You pass a bathroom which is nice, and places to sit. many picturesque spots along the way. I would have liked to hike to the top, it's moderate to strenuous and takes 4 hours. You park at the lodge, go inside and get your parking pass (5$) and then walk to the bottom (where you came in) and there are your trail entrances. Unicoi State Park is my local favorite. The lake loop hike is a great easy hike after work. Its beautiful and we have even seen bear tracks along the way. There is also a trail that runs from Unicoi to the town of Helen. Its a fun way to spend the afternoon. The mountain bike trails at Unicoi are challenging and make me cuss, but they have also helped me to gain confidence and build up some mad skilz in the woods. I look forward to attending the Festival of Trees every Christmas in the Lodge, its so beautiful to see all the decorated trees donated by local businesses. We have attended functions in the lodge and the food was good. I do take issue with the wine though. Being in the heart of GA Wine Country, they should have local wines not Yellow Tail or other generic stuff! I'm not taking a star off for that, its a very minor point but something they need to consider. read more

Beautiful park just outside of Helen. You have to drive through this state park to access Anna Ruby Falls. After visiting the falls, we paid the $5 parking fee to have a picnic lunch at one of the numerous picnic areas. We also spent a couple of hours at the swimming area of the lake and enjoyed the clean, refreshing water. We even rented a very nice paddle boat for only $15 per hour which the kids loved. I was against renting the paddle boat because I remember how difficult they were to operate when I was a young boy. These paddle boats have come a long way! read more

I been to the park in the past, however this time we stay at the Lodge I don't think I been in this kind of hotel before the hallway smell awful the room is dirty there's ants and small baby roaches, I can't sleep The beds are awful uncomfortable and dirty linens this place need a remodel asap but until then a great deep cleaning.and fumigation is key. There's dead bugs by corners windows and in the loft the bed is in the floor yuck, we did eat at the restaurant food was ok but lots of can and frozen items. Service was great. In the evening we got a pizza from their restaurant very very oily and burnt. I really wanted to have a better experience unfortunately this was a dump. The falls are beautifully so it's the park to be out and about. The employees rangers are wonderful in the falls very knowledgeable and friendly. I really wanted to love this place I will come back for day trips. read more

This is a great state park, especially if you find yourself in busy Helen during the summer months. We went to Helen hoping to go tubing but it was SO crazy trying to get into downtown Helen that we were happy to see this state park and decided to go there instead. This park is also home to Anna Ruby Falls. If you're from the Atlanta metro area, like me, you likely visited the Falls during your childhood. Your entrance price to the park also grants you access to hiking this Falls. There is a paved path leading up to the Falls. It does become busy during the summer months. There are a lot of benches to stop and rest along the hike up. When we went a park ranger at the entrance to the park told us the Falls was too busy and we couldn't go up there or we'd be turned away. This was a disappointment. We hiked around the lake and beach area and after a few hours decided to make the drive up the mountain to the falls to see if we could get in. Persistence paid off as we were greeted by another ranger who said he was happy to see us because no one had been up in hours. We told him why and after he let us through he called down to let them know to not turn others away. So if you are turned away just give it some time and try again. Again this is a park where you may see bears. Be bear aware! Also stick to the paths along the water going up to Anna Ruby Falls as there are a lot of snakes that come out to also enjoy the water and sunshine during warmer months. They do have a beach area which is very popular on weekends, especially with families. read more

Beautiful park with a nice swimming area but it gets packed very quickly and parking is hard to find. It's a long walk from the parking lots down to the beach area so keep that in mind deciding what to bring along. Lots of little cooking areas and a trail around the lake. read more

Amazing experience at the lodge. Yes, it's an older place, and yes you will find spider webs etc. it is in the woods. Staff was amazing in the restaurant and very friendly. Ample parking. Dinner buffet varies with food choices. Breakfast was delicious and reasonably priced. Food came out hot and fresh. Our bed was very comfortable. We had a nice view of the valley and mountains from our room. Beautiful lobbies in the lodge to hang out and talk. Several nature trails to walk around the area and they have a camping site and cabins with laundry rooms and a general store. The beach is small with canoe rentals. Very close to Anna Ruby Falls. The lodge also has a nice zip line set up. Archery lessons are available. Bonfire is also available. Free shuttle to downtown Helen. The park itself is beautiful but for the $249 a night price the 3 bedroom cabin left a lot to be desired. I don't think it had been really cleaned in weeks. We ran a disinfecting wipe up the hand rain going upstairs and it was black! We wiped off all the surfaces, chairs, tables, etc. and all came back black. The floor looked at if it had never been mopped. In this time of Covid things should be deep cleaned between renters. Light bulbs were missing, light over stove didn't work and the light in the bedroom flickered when you touched it. Grout was missing around the tub. Couch was so broken down I had to sit on a pillow. Dishes and pots and pans were a mixed up mess. We bought paper plates and plastic silverware. We will not be back. read more

This property is in desperate need of a huge makeover. Carpet smells like dampness , walls in need of paint, room didn't smell much better than the hallway. The original room that was assigned to us was dirty and the beds weren't made. Had to walk back to the lobby to get a different room, picked up baggage from the first room and go up The stairs ( no elevators) to a different building. Not a very pleasant experience. Should've looked at reviews before booking online. read more

I love this place. I stayed in the lodge with my wife and grandson. The room was a little small, but very comfortable. The food in the buffet was very good. Will definitely be coming back in the future. read more
