Short story - if this place is close to you and you just want some good sushi, this is a fine choice. The ambiance, service, cleanliness, and selection all failed to meet expectations; so, if you want a sit down dinner or great sushi, I would go one of my other favorites near Plano - Sushi Sakana (Plano), Masami (Richardson), Sushi Sake (Richardson), or Sushi Robata (Dallas).
Food
We had a mixture of sushi, cut rolls, and hand rolls.
In terms of just the food quality alone, it was *comparable* to Masami, Sushi Sake, and Sakana, or Sushi Robata, from what we tried. I have actually never had anything but tonkatsu bento box lunches from Simon's Sushi, so I have no idea how they compare; I guess I should correct that some day.
Their menu is more limited than I expected. I was surprised and disappointed to not see surf clam (hoki gai) on the menu. My favorite local places have a significantly greater selection of sushi and Japanese food in general, especially Sushi Robata (it's hard to compete with their selection).
Hygiene
When we walked in, there were three staff, the sushi chef and two wait staff. There was one 4-top, one couple at the sushi bar, and a large group (around a dozen people) that was tabbing out.
The remaining tables were 2-tops, so we opted to sit at the sushi bar. The available spots were dirty so we waited for them to be cleaned. The large group left shortly after we sat down.
The large table behind us was left uncleaned the entire time we were there. No, it was not crazy busy. About halfway through our meal, the one couple left and two other couples arrived.
Ambiance/Charm
I can't quite put my finger on it, but my wife and I both made the comment that all of our other favorites had a lot more charm to them. Sushi Sake and Sushi Robata have a very polished look, whereas Masami, Sushi Sakana, and Simon's Sushi have a warm, inviting atmosphere and are very friendly.
I guess the concise way to say it would be it comes across as a family run business, but you do not *feel* the family vibe.
Service
It wasn't horrible, but it was not great. As you process that, recall that we were at the sushi bar. Also, we were within 5 feet of where the wait staff spent about 90% of their time, which is to say, we were usually in their line of sight.
In spite of that, I don't recall any drink refills, I had to call them over to confirm that we had been served everything we had ordered, and I eventually just had to get up and ask them for the bill.
Price
It seemed reasonable/typical.
Miscellaneous - Re-using Order Sheets?
All of our sushi ordering sheets had been re-used. They scribbled over previous orders and gave the sheets to us. This might be reasonable if it did not create a problem but, just as you might expect, the waiter had to confirm we did not also want the previous person's order.
It is certainly not too expensive to give people a new sheet each time. If you are worried about killing trees, then laminate and use a removable marker. But the current solution is not good. And when you start thinking - "If someone is so thrifty that they need to reduce a small piece of paper, even it if is confusing, are they surprisingly thrifty on things you don't want a sushi place to be thrifty about?" read more
