I had been a long-time customer of Underwater Sports, in fact I got certified though them. I went to the diver's fair to buy new equipment. In addition to a new regulator setup, I was fitted for an Aqua Lung BC. Unfortunately, I was fitted incorrectly for the BC. During my first Dive, I could not get the waist straps of the BC tight enough and it kept shifting on me. I did some research and found out that the waist straps on this BC are interchangeable. I called the Seattle store and explained the situation to a saleswoman. I asked if they could SELL me the correct size waist straps at a discount, since I was initially sold the wrong size. I was not asking for a refund, or a replacement or anything that would actually cost them money. I could not believe how rudely she responded. No apathy, no apology for the incorrect fitting, just "Too bad, so sad" was the reply. Needless to say, I will never patronize their shop again, and will encourage all my dive buddies to shop elsewhere. read more

I have only had good dealings with the staff. They are helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. Sometimes the turnaround on service work can be lengthy I don't mind because they do quality work. One good thing is they put on many classes at all levels. I have not rented gear from them but I trust their gear is updated and in good repair. And.....once a year they put on Diver's Fair. I only had the battery to my underwater dive computer/watch changed here for my dive, and so, based on that service, I am giving them a five star review. As I think they did a great job! I look forward to diving in San Francisco Bay with my watch! Hurray! Just a heads up, the two times I have been here, once to drop off my watch and once to pick it up, we saw a lot of hooker like people in the streets hanging around. Which seemed rather odd, so we googled N Aurora Street, and turns out, it is the place to pick up women of that said service. Personally, I am of the opinion that they should just legalize prostitution and collect taxes on it, like in Amsterdam with their regulations. But I point it out in case it surprises you like it did us, as we weren't expecting it! lol~! That said, this is out first time to Seattle, and first time to the area, which we would have never known about, had we not had to look for a store that could change the batteries for us! read more

Having completed a discovery dive in Cozumel this past January my wife and I decided to get OW certified before our next trip. We had an amazing experience with the team at UWS. In the shop Ken, John and Kelli were extremely helpful resources. Our instruction team headed by Annelise (Pasnau) and assisted by Seth, Greg, Dave and Brandon all worked in concert imparting an extraordinary level of knowledge with a a patient, thorough and detailed approach. Really a top-notch experience across the board. We even had an additional confined water session learning some additional fun snorkeling skills before leaving to do our referral dives in Mexico. Took my OW cert class at the Seattle shop with Rachelle and it was a great experience. As a new diver, I then had a bunch of questions/concerns regarding gear options and purchases. Steve and Mike are super knowledgeable and patient, and never rushed me to a sale. They even told me to hold off on buying some things until I've got 10 or so more dives under my belt. I did my Drysuit and Advance Open Water training with George at Underwater Sports. I can't recommend this place enough for those who are interested in scuba diving! The staff are so friendly and welcoming that you never feel out of place. They are always willing to answer any questions and explain everything in great details even if you're not a student. They are also very honest with their sales and won't try to upsell you for the sake of making a sale. Wow! With the pandemic in the rear view mirror, the annual divers fair returned, thank God! I was lucky enough to attend a seminar on snoot strobes and then actually dive in the pool to try out the snoot with my camera and housing. So much fun and learning. They are knowledgeable about products and developments within the industry, supportive and patient with divers who are looking to gain more information than is available in a short online review, flexible with scheduling and finding solutions for needs that pop up unexpectedly, and are very responsive to feedback and questions. My husband and I did our AOW cert with one of the instructors working with the shop (Scott), and he did a fantastic job of providing instruction and guidance, working with scheduling issues, and helping to undo some bad learning that happened on our part. I'll happily go out of my way to support this shop. I got back into scuba diving in 1999. Underwater Sports (UWS) was there for me in providing an amazing PADI dive instructor like Mari Jachetta. Breathing from a life support system, in a liquid environment, does come with a lot of safety protocols. After completing the basics, I joined a well-established dive club, and continued to take advanced dive classes through UWS, I continued to evolve in my local cold water environment. I've maintained my relationship with UWS due to amazing people like Ken Dickman, the manager, who is very knowledgeable in the dive business, and being a dive instructor himself, has an answer to almost every dive related question. If Ken is not around, it is easy to find someone else from the ethnically and gender diverse staff who have assisted me. Over the years, John and Stephen have provided great customer service. I've since evolved into rebreathers, a form of scuba on steroids. Even though instruction isn't offered through UWS, they still provide great service on my regulators and tanks, and offer really good deals on gear during their summer and winter sales events. The Keffler family owns and oversee major decisions involving the chain of UWS on the I-5 corridor, and with the internet compromising their sales, I still turn to UWS for their expertise and professionalism for now over 20 years. I just figure, with global warming, isn't it a safe bet to know where to turn to for most of your diving needs. read more

I purchased an expensive drysuit from this shop and they told me it would be in within 4 to 6 weeks. Their customer service is awful once they take your money. I was given the runaround from each employee I spoke to. After more than 2 months of waiting, several phone calls, and no follow ups from this shop, I cancelled my order. If you have any kind of pulmonary condition you may want to consider getting your certification at a different shop. I have a history of asthma and have been diving for a few years. It was been a while since I last dove & went to the Edmonds location to sign up for a re-fresher class. Upon reading my intake form the attendant said they do not certify asthmatics as a shop policy. She didn't give me any alternatives or an option to get cleared by a medical provider. This shop has a poor reputation in the diving community and I can see why. read more

Underwater Sports offers a great selection of diving/snorkeling gear+accessories. I bought a wrong pair of fins for my open water diving class so I had to rush to this store last minute to get a new pair of diving fins. I was initially concerned that there might not be many items to pick from over at this store..and frankly, I just always hate buying things on the spot without having any knowledge of it beforehand. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised that Underwater Sports is actually a pretty large store, considering the store islocated in the same stripmall as other random stores that look a bit run down. The young guy who helped me was helpful. He helped answer some of the basic questions I have without making me feel awkward or stupid for not really knowing what I was looking for :). Service was fast and efficient, especially if you know what you want from the store. I asked questions, tried, picked what I wanted and paid for my stuff, all in all within just a short 10 min timeframe. As a newbie in scuba diving, I also appreciate that they didn't try to hard-sell you anything else that you don't need either :) read more

I'm an active diver, trusting my equipment will work in far-away places. I dropped off my regulator for full service at the Bvue location. When I went to pick it up, I paid the $200+ asked. Then noticed one regulator hose was frayed at the connection to the valve, the computer was dead, all tension sleeves were pushed down away from the joints making them useless, and one of the regulators popped when I hooked it up to a tank, the way regulators pop when you haven't used them for quite some time. Once the diaphragm pops then it usually works fine, but shouldn't do that if properly serviced. Good thing I didn't wait to inspect my regulator when I needed it in Palau! The store kept my money, though they did replace the faulty hose. But with a dead computer, it's still a useless regulator. I'll not go there again. Back to Lighthouse Dive Center; a little less convenient, but always had top notch service. read more

This shop is very meh. Selection of items is limited and they are generally overpriced (not a surprise). The reason I'm giving this shop the low rating though is the shamefully low quality of customer service. Expect to be ignored when you enter the store. Expect one word answers if you have questions or wish to be educated about something. Expect sub-par advice about the items and expect them to try and charge you as much as they can. Go here if you already know what you want to buy, what its price is, and you have called them before to make sure they carry it. If this isn't your dive shop - it should be! The repair team took my reg and BDC for servicing due to a manufacturer recommendation. In the busy winter travel season they were able to turn the refresh around in half the time they told me (YAY) The service intake people were very pleasant, efficient and contacted me the minute the work was done - I was super impressed. We also learned about their extensive shop and course offerings, and we will be returning here over our current shop. read more

If I could emend the Yelp website algorithm to give a business 5+ stars I would do it for Underwater Sports. My experience with this dive shop has been beyond stellar in so many aspects that I don't think I'll go to any other dive shop in Seattle. I received my Open water certification at UW sports. I signed up with some trepidation due to a terrible past experience with another dive shop in the Bellevue area (Silent World,see earlier Yelp review). The first good sign for me was that the dive shop merely facilitates the class by provided classroom, pool and gear. The instructors themselves are not paid by the dive shop. There is no reason for them to up sell extras. In fact there were times when they recommended against the most expensive option because it did not benefit me as much. My PADI instructors were Morgan and Rory. They are both very experienced but more importantly super patient and thorough with every step of the certification process. The classes went at a good pace and I passed all my written tests easily. During the open water dives (in February!), the instructors did everything possible to make the students comfortable. They brought a tent with a heater inside it to warm us up and had family members bring soup and cookies. I was unable to finish all my open water dives on the designated weekend, so Morgan rescheduled with me to finish my certification dive and actually came out on a snowy day to accompany me on a dive to Alki. This was at no extra charge and after I was certified he gave me some great advice on how I can become a better diver. Since my certification I have done some other dives in Hawaii and I was complimented by the dive master on good form. THANKS Morgan! As for the dive shop itself. Their prices are comparable to dive gear on Amazon.com. But with diving, it is highly recommended that you try the gear and make sure its fits you right. The dive shop employees are super friendly and will take the time to show you what you need. I don't use any of the stuff I bought online. It was a waste of money. In summary, I cannot recommend a better place to get certified or to rent gear and find some dive buddies if you are new to Seattle. read more

I did my Open Water certification at this location and am so grateful that I did! All of the staff are so helpful and patient, they let me know everything I would need prior to class and saw me through the whole process from home study, class and pool sessions and the certification dives. Eric Shi was my instructor and I am so incredibly grateful that I got to learn from him! He made everything routine and habitual which has enabled me to feel safe and confident in my dives since my certification. I have had the opportunity to compare my own training to others and I am shocked that at the shoddy job others (NOT from UWS) have done with their students. This is an extreme sport - it should be treated as such. Eric clearly cares about the safety of his students even after the course is over, and that is evident in his teaching style. He has continued to be a resource for me when planning dives, asking followup questions and exploring new learning opportunities. I am so glad that I got to be introduced to this sport at such a great facility and continue to be part of the community through shop dives and additional courses! read more

I have been a customer here for over 15 years. They offer a good variety of courses and have a competent repair shop. They can do most drysuit repairs and alterations in-house. Some changes including zipper replacements may be sent out, possibly to the original manufacturer of the suit so you may want to ask about this prior to dropping in their shop. SCUBA is neither a cheap sport, nor a cheap profession. Their pricing is surprisingly good and even better if you can wait for their annual tent sale. These are all good reasons to value a dive shop but clean air in your tank is vital. This shop offers very good quality gas fills with accurate mixing if you need it. All of my tank inspections are done here. Their standards are high and they do an excellent job of cleaning tanks, when needed. read more

I've gone through a couple of courses through Underwater Sports and dealt with their (now defunct) Kirkland, Bellevue, and Seattle locations. The instructors (who do not work for Underwater Sports) seem to be pretty good. Al Schumer especially was great. That said, all interactions I had to have with Underwater Sports just got progressively worse. The people at Bellevue were ok. The people in Seattle were terrible. The only even remotely friendly person was Ken. But by the time all was said and done, I was really tired of being treated like I was a complete nuisance and a waste of their time. The last course I took, they closed the store location (Kirkland) as the class was progressing, forcing the instructor to teach in an empty storefront. Then they scheduled three groups in the same pool, meaning lots of people got kicked in the head. Then they asked the students to deal with both their Bellevue and Seattle locations depending on what equipment was needed; however, they didn't bother coordinating the stores, so people were continually surprised when we asked for things, charged us for other things that other employees said were included, and ended up not being able to find our paperwork when we were returning gear. I'm certainly not an experienced diver, so maybe this place is great if you're buying gear or having it serviced, but as a guy who's trying to learn I've never interacted with a company that wants business less. Maybe contact the instructors at the Northwest Diving Institute (seems like where Underwater Sports gets it's instructors) directly if you want to take classes...and then try and get your gear anywhere else. read more

Despite some of the reviews I've seen here for UWS Seattle, I've always been treated very well here. My certification class was thorough and effective, and the staff has always been friendly. If the price is way lower online, just mention it (in a nice way) and they'll usually cut you a deal. Like so many small businesses, the nicer you are, the better you will be treated. One downside, they do not offer nitrox fill cards. Having a discount program or all you can breath annual nitrox fills would be ideal. read more

Got certified for PADI open water here in a class taught by Spero, and assisted by Andrew! They and the shop are awesome; expert knowledge, fun, effective teaching style--I highly recommend! I had gone through a cert class once before back in Illinois, and this is by far the better experience. There's also a good selection of equipment well suited for cold water diving, like all around Puget Sound and the coasts. If you're looking for a drysuit, there's a decent selection here, with well experienced shopkeepers. P.S. Our final dives were out in Alki Cove 1; I took the class in March-April, and the cold wasn't nearly as bad as I feared, even in a 7mm wetsuit! If you live in Seattle, and think it's cool that we have water here, wait till you see what's under it! Go on an adventure! Go! read more

Our then 14 year old son got PADI certified at a class there taught by Spero. Spero and Underwater Sports went above and beyond the call in several ways to help him get certified in time for his High School biology class trip to Maui. Our son was the only youth in a class with five adults and doesn't have a lot of fat on his bones so doing the open water dives in cold Puget Sound in March was a bit tricky for him. First, getting gear that really fit right was both important and difficult as he's also fairly small. He was too cold to finish the skills on the second day of diving so Spero took him out solo the following weekend at no extra charge. He also swapped out the gloves and boots a couple of times until we got a set that fit well enough to keep the water exchange to a minimum thus keeping him warmer (we also bought a gear package with the class which we're also quite happy with). Several months later, my wife and I decided we wanted to dive with our son during an upcoming vacation so we of course looked up Spero to do a refresher course for us. We had gotten certified 15 years ago but not dived since. He worked with us to find a time that that met our needs and went over basic skills with us. My wife had a terrifying, dangerous experience when we first certified, and has lived in fear of scuba diving ever since. She told Spero she was fearful and he treated her with such kindness, making sure she was comfortable and remembered her basic skills well. Noticing she was still uncertain, and not great at buoyancy, he gave her an extra hour in the pool at no extra charge so she would have time to practice. As a result of his kind, cheerful, and thorough teaching, we have a now-fifteen year old who is supremely confident in the water. We had a fantastic time diving in Mexico. Even my wife regained her confidence and after two dives holding hands with the dive master, finally was able to let go and dive on her own! We look forward to diving in Puget Sound with Spero. We cannot recommend him, and Underwater Sports, highly enough. read more

I went to Underwater Sports on Aurora Ave N for a wetsuit repair. On October 30, I brought in my black Xterra triathlon wetsuit for repair. Mike was assisting and I asked him how it could be repaired. He said it would be sewn and glued. I assumed this to be true since the neoprene was previously sewn where the tear existed. I picked up the wetsuit on November 3 and went swimming on November 6. As soon as I took the wetsuit off, the tear split open. I was shocked since I assumed it was sewn. I discovered that it was only glued. I was perplexed because I thought that I paid for Underwater Sports to sew the tear. Had I known that the tear would only be glued, I wouldn't have paid $33 for a simple gluing service. I had already tried gluing the wetsuit before and it did not work. I went to Underwater Sports because I wanted to support a local business that knew how to professionally fix a wetsuit. I called Underwater Sports and spoke to the wetsuit technician and another associate about the matter. They would not issue a refund over the phone. They recommended I e-mail regarding the issue. After a few days, I have not heard back from them. I am extremely dissatisfied with their customer service and lack of understanding of the situation. read more

I first certified in OW at another store about 7 years ago. That other store had a "that's good enough" attitude and did the minimum possible to certify me. I wasn't happy with the other store's service, fitting or prices on the gear they recommended to me. Someone recommended Underwater Sports so I checked them out and signed up to redo my certification. They gave me the proper time and attention and no corners were cut. I felt much more confident after their training. I compared prices and UWS gave me a fair deal on an equipment package. Over the years they have serviced me well and I have trusted their advice and service for my equipment. UWS has gone the extra mile for me and my group of buddies at all locations. I agree with another review that UWS gives great air fills which helps me maximize my dives. read more

It's a good place to get a feel for gear and take classes, and is a GREAT place to get fills (their air is REALLY good and hyperclean). The mainly carry DUI, Apollo, and I think some USIA stuff, as well as Scubapro regs and a few other brands for misc. things. Stuff is as pricey as you'd expect from a dive shop, and it depends on who you're dealing with. Some people push more than others, and there are a few guys in the evening who are really great (Kevin is one of them) who will talk all you want about gear and not try to sell you anything--which in turn makes me buy from them. A lot. Probably too much. For classes they have a convenient board describing upcoming trips and classes, and they also have their own pool and a small classroom to teach in. Parking is good in their lot, and it's right off Aurora so the commute isn't bad. Overall a solid base shop if you're diving out of Seattle and looking for something convenient. read more

I just finished my PADI Open Water certification here. I had a great experience! This was a birthday present with a lot of work. The beginner class included 5 weeknights spread over 2 weeks of classroom and pool time (about 4hrs total each night), plus 2 days on the beach for our open water dives. That's a TON of instructor time for the money, and my skills and form definitely improved as a result. The class includes rental of your BCD (air vest), air tanks, regulator, and wet suit. You have to provide the boots, gloves, mask, snorkel, and fins. You also have to buy the course materials - which seemed a bit like a PADI markup. Still, there was lots of great info. The dive shop staff were always friendly and helpful. When we were unloading our gear after our weekend check-out dives they even helped us grab tanks/gear out of car trunks. Their prices are going to beat Amazon, but for a total newbie (like me) they helped me get gear that fit right and worked well. As a result, I now own a great mask, snorkel, and fins that I'll be taking on my next vacation. Our instructor (Larry) was knowledgable, affable, and helpful every step. He spent every minute in the pool and Puget Sound with us. His (volunteer!) co-instructors were amazing, and the student-to-teacher ratio was usually around 3-1. The PADI-flavor videos were a bit cheesy (they're an all-ages kind of affair). By contrast, Larry had great stories of real dives. I can't speak to Underwater Sports versus other Seattle training shops, but I can say that after 5 nights in the pool, doing 4 dives in 2 days in frigid West Seattle was a LOT less intimidating that it would have been if we had only, say, spent 1 night in the pool. That's 5x more learning how to setup/breakdown your gear, 5x more descents and ear equalizations, 5x more chances to breath air underwater. If you are looking for the "fast" way to get certified, this isn't for you. If you want to really gain some skills and confidence, try this out. Plus, there are several UWS locations around Seattle, so you can pick the shop nearest you. read more

Very disappointed in this dive shop. Dropped my dry suit to get the zipper replaced. Weeks went by without word back. Eventually they contacted me and said the the dry suit manufacturer thought I needed $770.00 of repairs to the suit. I thought that was ridiculous as I bought the suit for a little over $1,00.00 five years ago. I said no to the repairs. Went to pick up my dry suit and was charged $50 for shipping. I was shocked because nobody informed me beforehand that my suit was being shipped to be repaired. I paid $50 for no repairs to my suit. If I had been told of shipping costs when I dropped off my suit I'd have thought differently about it. You just lost a customer Underwater Sports. I'm a commercial diver and go through gear constantly. I've also been diving for 22 years. read more

Just finished my certification today and I couldn't be more pleased with my experience! The dive instructors were GREAT and made sure we thoroughly understood each skill. Mike was our lead instructor and his knowledge and experience was very evident, which was comforting. I completed this course in just two weekends- the first weekend included class time and learning the skills, and the last weekend included four dives (two at 40 feet and two at 60 feet) where we performed the skills. I have already started recommending this company to my friends who are wanting to get certified. Overall, it was a great experience with some friendly people and I completed the course feeling confident in my diving abilities. read more

Great place. No frills but qualified people and really reasonable prices. I felt pretty good about diving after a ten year break but wanted a refresher coarse just in case. I elected to do a private lesson because all the classes were full for my short term need and I got Spero as an instructor and he was fantastic. Very thorough and patient, great at articulating the important stuff very clearly and simply in terms and using tips to help you remember. Great personality too. I would highly recommend spending time with him if you have the means. The price was actually cheaper than a couple other spots I checked before, and this dive shop actually answers their phone. I received an avalanche air bag for xmas and took my canister in to get filled. The gentlemen working their were extremely helpful! They showed me how to attach the canister, had me deploy the airbag to make sure it worked, then showed me how to reset the canister. They then refilled the canister and only charge me for one fill. I was impressed they knew so much about the bags being that they are a scuba shop. They were super helpful! read more

I took the introductory course here, which is a PADI certification that took place over two weekends. The employees were knowledgeable and made sure I got equipment that fit well, and their policy of exchanges is helpful. Definitely take the academic portion before the practical stuff seriously. Eric was my instructor, and he was patient and an excellent teacher that made sure everyone was able to learn all the necessary skills. Safety is pretty vital when diving so you want to be confident in your instructors, and he was obviously an expert. The final open water dives in the Sound were incredibly fun. Several volunteer dive masters accompanied us on our pool and open water dates, which is a really nice gesture. You get a lot of instructor time for the fee you're paying. They also offer monthly free pool time to brush up on your skills, so that's a plus. If you're interested in scuba, this is a great place to learn. read more

Experienced nothing but the utmost in professionalism during the class and dives and also had a great time, and also for an absurdly low price because I bought it during their annual dive sale (in the summer time, check their website for details)!! On top of the excellent class, which left me feeling very safe and excited about a potentially deadly sport as a complete newcomer, there was never pressure to buy anything from the shop. Neither the instructor, nor any of the floor staff, receives any commission for sales, so they never pressure you buying into anything you don't need. They're extremely helpful about giving you honest advice on how to choose a product, how to use it and care for it once you have it, and servicing and replacing anything. A friend's snorkel broke during the class and when she asked if they had the piece to fix it, they just gave her a brand new one of a fancier model for free!! I will definitely be returning for my future certs and would recommend the shop to anyone who asked, whether for classes, merchandise, or servicing. Side note- I also had to reschedule my class on late notice which could have been met by rudeness or annoyance but they were very accommodating. read more

Wow. So I just got back from the Underwater Sports in Seattle. I had gone in to price out a new mask since my old one (used for 16 years) had started to leak. I noticed that they did not have any prices on any of their equipment which really bothers me and gives the whole experience a used car salesman kind of feel. But the salesman was really helpful. He explained that they had just had a big sale and had not put prices back on everything yet. He offered to look up any price for me and help me find a mask that I really liked. He was really patient as I tried on every mask on the shelf. I eventually picked out a mask that I really liked (Atomic) which turned out to be more than I wanted to spend. I thanked the salesman for his time and was ready to leave when he offered to go talk to his manager about the price. I ended up getting a price that I was willing to live with and made the purchase. Then I got home and found out that what I had paid was much much less than I could even find it for on the internet. I have gone to this store several times over the years to make small purchases or get tank fills. I have always had really good service but I did not know about the prices on their gear so I never wrote a review. Well, now I am a fan. There are alot of negative reviews out there that I don't think are deserved. I have been diving for a long time and think that the pricing and service are on par or better than any other dive shop I have gone to. read more
