    Walking into the Undertow

Great little bar, cheap drinks and live music! This is a 3am bar, they have live music from 10pm-2am, and serve food till 2am! Drinks are good and very reasonable, and there are two pool tables! Only reason I gave 4 stars is this is a smoking bar....not a big deal, just not a plus for me...

Unfortunately, I'm leaving this one star review, as much as I don't want to. We sat at a table and after waiting 15 minutes we weren't greeted or our order taken even though the bartender saw us walking through the door. We came for the food and the drinks after reading others' reviews but we left hungry and thirsty. Very disappointing.

When looking for the best deal in all, you can eat Royal Reds. Be sure to check out The Undertow to satisfy your cravings. Occurring Saturday and Sunday, their shrimp buffet offers roasted corn potato's sausage & plenty of that delicious shrimp all for $10. Throughout the week be sure to check out events & specials offering live bands Karaoke & Texas Hold'em or rack'em up for a game of pool. Come for the food, stay for the fun here at The Undertow.   This is a favorite spot when it comes to enjoying a few cold ones with family and friends or to enjoy a few events & a variety of entertainment offered here. As mentioned in my short intro, I enjoy their all you can eat special on the weekends. Finding their shrimp hit or miss at times while snowbird season is happening the chef attempts keeping pace with crowd & with the volume they forget to restock on occasion. I suggest going early to get it fresh & moist. Their servers and bartender are some of the greatest people you'll ever meet, excellent attitudes, friendly & laid back.    As quick I was going through copious amounts of shrimp sausage corn & gallons of butter & cocktail sauce they made sure my table is spacious for additional carnage & made sure I didn't spend 1 moment thirsty keeping my drinks filled. When it comes to their pool tables, there's not much to say as their tables felted perfectly no uneven-ness with the table cue's seem perfect, but I enjoy a good pool game after a hardy meal. This has been an excellent visit & so excited to come back again another weekend for their Poker (My favorite hobby) Karaoke live music & indulge again in eating all you can eat shrimp  Be sure to like them on FB & tell a friend. Best reuben around! Bartender/server Mack is phenomenal! As is bartender Jeramy! Great place to be yourself. Have a brew, watch some football, play pool, smoke your vape or cigar. Vape shop on site. I love coming here. Great laid-back local atmosphere.

Amazing service, great wings, good burger, no cheese on the loaded fries which was super disappointing.

This place is definitely a must try. They had a all you can eat crawfish boil. The manager stated that they will start having these on a weekly basis. 20$ all you can eat crawfish with all the fixins. Best crawfish I ever had state to state by far. If you happen to be in gulf shore area must stop by there.. smoker friendly and live music... Win!!!

Under Tow Grill. Local hole-in-wall. Great prices and food. Royal Reds All you can eat, Sat and Sunday. $15.99. Giant outdoor area.
    Gregg H.

A great find. Local bar and grill with reasonable prices. Fresh dip was big enough for 2. Friendly staff and all you can eat Royal Reds Sat and Sun for $15.99.

ATMOSPHERE Nothing too special about the atmosphere here. I just love that. It was nice clean open area with large windows and plenty of seating and easy to get around. The bar area look cool and the layout was nice. FOOD this is why you came here, right! All kinds of fish cooked all kinds of different ways. Delicious gumbo. Love that pimento cheese ball appetizer with that blueberry pepper jelly! For lunch, I had the meat and three. It was all good, especially the collard greens. SERVICE THIS WAS MAYBE SOME OF THE BEST SERVICE I HAD THE WHOLE TIME I WAS IN ORANGE BEACH THIS WEEKEND. OUR SERVER WAS SO AMAZING. I HATE THAT I CAN'T REMEMBER HER NAME, BUT SHE WAS ON TOP OF IT AND SUPER DELIGHTFUL. DRINKS The bar area looked really nice. Most of my table had iced tea which everybody enjoyed. I also got a beer from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I was very impressed by their beer selection and they are a verified venue on the Untappd app so you can go to that app to look at all the beer selection and even filter and sort the beers so that you can have an easier time selecting the proper beverage. It even came out in a glass that matched the beer that I had! I like that extra touch.

But it was brought with the meal. The salad was fresh and crisp, with a surprise of a small Peppa dew pepper. Blazing red with a little heat and delicious. Haven't seen them in a restaurant ever. Unfortunately my fish and potatoes were cold, cold and butter congealed. The greens were warm and good I had also ordered the cornbread. It was refreshing to see that it wasn't the usual cake like kind, plus not the ultra sweet kind either. More bread like with a hint of sweetness. Delicious. The fish and potatoes had a nice flavor but unfortunately the cold food spoiled the experience. Since I was a guest of my sister I didn't say anything about the cold food. What a disappointment. Maybe when I return things will be better.

We did not like the 30 dollars worth of sweet shrimp. It does come in very generous portion if you like that type of flavor. Hush puppies were pretty darn good, light, nicely seasoned with good flavor. The Cole slaw was excellent. All portions were generous. Overall they are friendly, the service is personable and efficient! Ambiance is that of a local diner style, not fancy just comfortable. We liked everything but the sweet grilled shrimp. We are from the north and maybe it is just a southern style we aren't familiar with or used to consuming. The gumbo is pretty good too. It can be hit or miss depending on what you order however, we have been enough to know and share with others what to order and what to stay away from. The following is from our most recent visit. We began the meal with a Cosmo and a Fairhope Brewery Blue Steel Sour. Both were very good. The Blue Steel sour has notes of blueberry. For an appetizer we ordered the cheese dip. It consist of three cheeses, including Gruyere, which is one of our favorites. The cheese also comes with feta cheese and a tomato relish over the top, which we find very good. It makes the cheese dip a little different than others. The tomatoes are very soft and the relish is on the sweeter side. My Wife got the chicken roulade. It was okay. The chicken was good however, it is wrapped in bacon and flash fried. In our opinion the flash fry isn't needed and it adds the risk of the bacon being overdone or burnt, which is what happened. The Parmesan risotto was a little gummy but had good flavor. The cream sauce that accompanied the dish was probably the best part. I got the fish sandwich and upgraded from sheepshead to grouper. You can get it fried, blackened or grilled. I chose grilled and it was really good. It was not the first time I have gotten the fish sandwich. The bun is a sourdough/Hawaiian roll hybrid. I got an order of fries to go with the fish sandwich. Their fries are really really. They're slightly battered and crunchy. Very good with ketchup or tartar sauce or both! If you visit I would suggest sticking to the fish sandwich, burger or fish dish (grilled/blackened) that comes with a cream based sauce. Their drinks and beer is selection really good as well. Most of the time on weekends they have live music if that's your kind of thing.

Fire Cracker Shrimp Fried Rice - 9.2 I order this every time we visit. It is my favorite dish of all the places we visit each year at the beach. It may not be the best but definitely my favorite and in the top 3 as far as best goes. The fried egg on top really puts it over the top although, I do wish it was runny and not cooked through. Gyoza - 7.0 Has a lot of filling which is good however, it isn't very seasoned or flavorful. They appeared to be fried however, not very crispy. We try gyoza at nearly any restaurant we visit that has it on the menu. Comparing this to other gyoza's, it's good but not great. Tuna Lovers Roll - 7.8 Roll was good but a little too spicy. The spice was expected obviously but still a tad too spicy. It also lacked the correct amount of sauce in my opinion. It also needed another ingredient or two to take it to the next level. Sesame Cracker w/ Honey Butter - 8.4 I rated it a little higher due to the originality. I have eaten at restaurants in half the States that make up this country and have never had toasted sesame crackers with honey butter. It is a thing in the South to have saltines, club cracker, etc. with butter at seafood and steak restaurants. However, I haven't seen this combo. It was good and not too filling.

My advice, find a seat, have someone order at the order window, then head to the bar to order drinks. The wait to order food took about a half hour. It was very quick to get our drinks. We were able to snag a couch area on a platform. It was so comfy and we loved the views. A heads up- if you snag a couch like this, kids will get up on the platform and jump off of it. People will step up on the platform and walk extremely close to you. I had to ask a kid to stop throwing sand by us because we were eating our dinner. It was a little chaotic. We were extremely patient and understand, but I could see some people being very upset and annoyed. After ordering, our food came out pretty quick. I started with the coconut grouper bites and they were phenomenal. Light breading, lightly sweat, and flaky. I had the Gulf Grilled Cobia and it was phenomenal. The fish was tender, flaky, and light. No fishiness at all. The sauce on the fish was also delightful. My husband and son had the fajita skewers and both enjoyed them. My husband also had the peel and eat shrimp and said they were amazing at The Gulf. Our drinks were okay. We had better drinks at other places during the week, but they weren't bad. We would return, but try to come on an off-time that wasn't so busy.

One thing that stood out was the gift shop at the entrance--it could definitely use a refresh. The dark corner filled with outdated beach clothing isn't the best first impression. We visited on a Tuesday around 7:00 p.m., and there was no wait. During our meal, only about four tables were occupied, so it was very quiet. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and checked on us frequently. The only odd part of the atmosphere was that cartoons were playing on the bar TVs even though there weren't any kids in the restaurant. For dinner, my husband ordered the surf and turf, and his steak was cooked perfectly. The baked potato, however, came with an overwhelming amount of melted cheese--enough for several potatoes. I ordered the blackened grouper. It was cooked well and had good flavor, but the fillet was very thin and wasn't as memorable as other grouper dishes I've had. The whipped sweet potatoes were sweeter than expected from the brown sugar, and the Brussels sprouts were heavily coated in a sweet balsamic glaze, leaving them soft instead of crispy. I think both sides would be better with less added sweetness to let the natural flavors shine. We finished with the Bananas Foster, which was delicious and a fun presentation. It came with three small scoops of vanilla ice cream and half a banana. Since the flaming presentation takes a little time, larger scoops of ice cream would hold up better and not be half melted by the time the fire goes out. I got the catch of the day with a loaded baked potato and side salad which that to me was a 8.5/10. I was so full and so excited for my left overs. The manager was checking on every one and offered my daughter fish food. At this point I have paid and we went to go feed the fish and when we came back everything on the table was gone. My bill was 92 which might be normal for 2 people here I'm not too sure yet. But I was so disappointed. My daughter said it was the best butter noodles she ever had and she ate up the bread.
