I used to love Uncle Remus. I grew up on the west side and they were always a staple in my family. But sadly I will not be returning. I got a 6 wing and paid $12.00 for it. I asked for extra mild sauce and was informed that would be an additional $1.50 the roll was $. 49. There is a difference between making pricing decisions to help your business and outwardly exploiting your customers. I am very disappointed and will not be returning. read more

The food sucks The chicken is hard the rides a heart just nasty big are pieces of chicken

Let me start off saying the food is good, but the prices are kinda high. One think I didn't like about this location I called and ordered my food ahead of time but when I arrived 30 mins after I was told it would take only 15mins. They don't cook the food until you come in read more

Yummy!!! I am a Southsider, so I only met Uncle Remus through the location in Bronzeville. I wanted to check out an original Westside location, just to see if I was missing out on anything. I must say the food was equally as tasty, I had an order of wings with mixed sauce - the crunch level was excellent with just the right amount of sauce! read more

Waited over an hour and a half for a single order of six wings. They need to get it together

There's not a lot of chicken shacks so I was force to come here first u gotta get past the guys whistling yo baby at u at the front of the place and then once in the doors you encounter the cd. Dvd. Bootleg man after u finally stand around rejecting all those guys u wait ten mins to just place your order thru a card.board tape window for the gurl who was on her cell phone to say oh we closing in 10 mins we don't have no chicken ?????wtf say wht u want about the Southside... but at least whn I go to a chicken shack that's open I get product this place. Is why places in our neighborhoods are often given a poor out look from the atmosphere to the customer service by far the worst black owned business I've encounter n yet people wonder why we don't support one another well off to Boston market I goooooooo. read more

If could give it negative stars I would. I can't believe they just charged me 11 bucks for 6 tiny wings cooked in dirty grease, a small handful of stale fries, and NO drink these people are dirty and robbing the community serving this garbage. The service sucks just as bad as the food I threw that crap out as soon as I smelled the dirty grease so disgusted and disappointed. No care was put into making that lame excuse for a meal. To put it simply if I was paralyzed I would learn how to walk just long enough to make it to a trash can and throw their food away. All Bad read more

This is a carry out spot. The chicken is delicious but the wait is not. A short wait is 15 minutes. if you get your food in less than 5 minutes then it was probably ready already and you want a new order. It would be 5 stars but again the wait + the cover charge to leave the joint (the guys outside asking for money when you leave with your food) = 4 stars tops. The food is delicious if its cooked fresh and the sauce is pretty good (for those of you who rate food by its condiments). For those looking for a comparison to Harold's, it's about neck and neck with a GOOD Harold's(you know what I mean). It doesn't taste the same (because it's a different spot) but it's every bit as good as a good Harold's and certainly better than J&J or Shark's for chicken. read more

OMG did I love the chicken at this place! Since I moved to this area, I have searched high and low for some decent chicken and all the places out here in the suburbs, to put it mildly, have been a major disappointment. Finally I found a place that knows how to do it right! I am originally from Kansas City, and we have some pretty fantastic chicken places like Go Chicken Go, Stroud's, RC's and several others. I also have family down South in Georgia and Florida where places like KFC, Church's, Popeye's etc. can hardly operate a restaurant in many towns because all the independents with their great great grandfather's recipe beat the shit out of them and the locals know their chicken (try Po' Folks if you are in the St Petersburg/Tampa area). A coworker of mine that stays in the city recommended Uncle Remus and I am glad I took him up on his advice as the grub was spectacular. Don't be in a hurry if you are coming here as the line does not move along at a rapid pace. "Fast Food" this place is not. They make your meal to order, and I wish I would of read the reviews here at Yelp more closely and called in ahead of time so it would of been waiting for me when I got there. The girl at the counter was very sweet and hospitable and gave me a short rendition since me staring up at the menu probably gave away that I had never been there before. I was also the only white boy to be found for miles, which is also a good sign as the brothas tend to know their chicken. I went with the three piece with fries and a roll and made my way to my table. I also picked up a side order of fried okra, as it is a personal fav of mine. There are very few tables here if you want to dine in. The vast majority of folks took their food carry out. Even before I sat down the smell on the walk over was heavenly. Even now I am licking my chops thinking about it. They douse the top liberally with hot sauce to let it seep in unless you request it on the side (saves me a step). This is a tactic that is very common in Georgia and the Carolinas as well, though not to be confused with "Hot Chicken" which is a product that is almost exclusive to Nashville (or people from Nashville). The sauce is a delicious and tangy addition, but not much in the way of heat so that it jives with most people's taste buds. I would be curious to know what is in it, as I have never had anything quite like it before so I am guessing it is something they concocted in house. I went up and got an extra side after tasting though. Delish. I am also not sure what these guys use in their batter, as it is probably one of those "I could tell you but I would have to kill you" situations. It is both flavorful and spicy. The skin has a lovely peppery flavor and is nice and crispy without being over breaded. This contrasts with the succulent meat of the chicken itself and the tangy flavor from the sauce to create pure chicken nirvana. SO FRIGGIN GOOD! Also, a word to the wise, let it sit for a bit before diving in. They literally take it from the fryer to your basket and put it in your hand, so it is scalding hot. It probably looks like I have a cold sore on my lip right now from taking a huge bite initially. Rookie mistake on my part. The roll I had was quickly turned into a makeshift "sandwich" by me ripping some chicken off and cutting the roll in two. My Mother used to always consider this bad manners ranking right up there with drinking milk straight from the carton. I say screw all that noise. When I saw other people doing the same thing I felt an immediate sense of affirmation. I have actually seen a few people at a chicken place in the burbs trying to eat fried chicken with a knife and fork. Seriously? These freaks need to stick with their hummus dips and certified organic {insert food here} and leave the real food to the professionals. The fired Okra was also on point. As a person who has bought fresh Okra and tried to pull this off myself at home, trust me when I tell you it is very easy to screw up. The UR Okra was nice and golden brown, but not overcooked, which is the most difficult challenge in getting it right. Prices here are quite reasonable. You can get a feast for under 10 bucks. Overall, this place ranks among some of the very best fried chicken I have ever had, which speaks volumes coming from me. After having a couple of month drought when first moving here, I am glad I discovered this place when I did as it is a important staple food (at least for me) to have in the arsenal. I sort of wish they had waffles too, as I have a thing for the savory and sweet combo from chicken and waffle joints, but no need to stray from the path when they already do chicken so well. If you are in need of some good Southern cooking, this is your spot. According to the clerk who took my order, this place has been in business for over 50 years, and after eating here it is easy to see why. read more

BEST CHICKEN I HAVE EVER TASTED. Hands down!!! Notice my first sentence is in all caps. Words can't describe how good their food is. The roll was yummy and fries too. Love that mild sauce. I'm a former southsider, so I may be a little bias to certain foods on the westside, but Uncle Remus has never let me down. Chicken is always cooked perfectly. Well this place is not pretty to say the least. Scary to the eye but the chicken wings are pretty tasty. Not better than Harold's in my opinion. But it is good and cheaper!. Great food, terrible service. I've been to this location a few times before. The food is good. It rarely disappoints. But the service is always the same... Terrible. they can't find friendly people to save their lives. I don't know about you, but I can't enjoy my meal when I have to fight the staffers to get it. Today the girl working the counter practically hung up in my face when I called. I was a repeatedly ignored even though I was at the windows to pick up my order. My order was wrong. I have to go back to the restaurant to get what was missing. All I got was a "here". She seemed irritated, like I was the one that messed up. The girl made no apology. No consideration, no nothing. For me this is the final straw. If I have to go through this mess just to get dinner, I will spend my money elsewhere. It's simply not worth the aggravation read more

I highly recommend Uncle Remus for your all your catering needs. read more

The chicken is good but the service is terrible. My dad bought fish and chicken the other day. He didn't check the order he just assumed everything was correct. He spent about $52.00. When he got home we noticed they didn't give him the fries. We called and instead of them saying we are sorry come get the fries whenever you can that was our mistake. They made it seem like we were lying and said we would have to speak to manager and of course there was no manager available. We will not be going back here again. Just stick to Harold's :/ read more

I was in the neighborhood and always wanted to try this place out. This is strictly a take out to go type of place as they have no seating. I got a three piece mixed chicken combo with the hot sauce. The chicken was good but by the time I drove home it started to cool off. Everybody knows fried chicken is at its best piping hot, fresh out of the fryer. Too bad they don't have any seating but seems like that's a result of the neighborhood. read more

First time visiting and I must admit, it was just okay. Reading the reviews I thought I was going to be WOWed, but NOPE! The catfish was very good, but as for the chicken it doesn't get a double thumbs up from me at all. I'll be sticking with their competitor. read more

I'm always looking for the best bang for my $buck$, be it a good deal or an addictive flavor. I hadn't gone to this location in a long while, I always go to the one on the other end of Madison. Right across from the Personal liquor store, It's a building or two away from the P.O. Anyway, my oldest brought me some wings from this location on a Saturday night. MAN they were HOT(to the touch) saucy, meaty & not as crunchy. I had questions. I figured they were soo good because they are helly busy on the wknds, so they have to constantly drop those wings. The other times you can catch them doing good is during lunchtime specials. They are my GO-TO places for wings because I refuse to spend my money in an establishment of foreigners. I need some down south in my wangs. I mainly just get wings and fries when I go. Except for the price all else is well. Oh wait the one in this post doesn't have seating, the other has limited waiting area seating. (Take Your Food & Go) This place/restaurant has NOTHING to do with that SouthSide chicken joint You guys want to speak of it .... go to it's post I PREFER UNCLE REMUS OVER that SouthSide place anyday. AND I've been to more than a few of their locations. read more

I grew up eating Uncle Remus's chicken and its always been one of my favorites. The neighborhood is sketchy but, all my favorite 'hood' foods are in sketchy spots. I've ordered wings and mixed pieces and its all the same...GOOD! Chicken is battered, crisp, and moist. I'm not sure what it is but, their combination of mild sauce compliments the chicken and fries perfectly. I even like their bread roll. I really can't say too many negatives about them other than the neighborhood being shaky, sometimes service is a little slow and confusing, and limited parking. I always bring somebody with me so, they can hop out the car and pick it up. They have a couple newer locations but, I only go to the original one here. I come all the way from Rogers Park, it's that good. I think I want to try their catfish, though. It looks good. read more

I have been searching for the best fried chicken in Chicago for years, and I think this is it. Lucky for me, this location is only ten minutes from my house. The chicken is double breaded and fried to perfection. I was a bit concerned about the sauce, but it was fantastic and flavorful. Even the catfish was super tasty...light and nicely seasoned. This is a no frills operation with no seats and a long line on my visit. The staff member we encountered was friendly enough. Parking was full in front, so we had to go around the block and cross over to the other side of the street. If you live nearby, you MUST check it out. If you live farther away, bring your order to Oak Park to enjoy in a nearby park. Yumm read more

Uncle Remus soul food reminds me so much of McArthur located on Madison street one of the very best soul food place in Chicago.

I think that ONE star is to much it more like a negative ONE . Yesterday 3/17/20 I had the most horrible customer service via phone and as well as in person. I've never imagined a business or should I repeat like the employee said "Family Owned Business," and treat customer with no type of respect and profanity. Never have I thought to exists and apart of being racists. They had to tell Tina to shut her mouth more than 5 consecutive times for being vulgar and having a mouth full profanity and attitude as well. I was craving their food but as for going back I don't think I'd be there again and I will report this as well a step higher. Terrible customer service OVERALL. The manager tried to rectify the situation and was courteous but still in yet having employees like the Tina they have makes people not want to consume out of their restaurant doesn't matter if it's family owned or not. TERRIBLE! read more

This place is simple. Carry out only, there isn't even seating for while you're waiting on your order, so call ahead and you won't have to wait long. The people are nice but busy, so don't waste their time. The food is incredibly well priced. Honestly, I can't speak to anything they serve besides the chicken and fries, because every time I get near that hot sauce I don't have a choice. Now, I'm not really a fan of most fried chicken and I would have never experienced the bliss that is Uncle Remus if I didn't happen upon a "Fun Lunch" for the honors students at the middle school where I used to work. That being said, Uncle Remus chicken is mind-blowing. I love it. I think I used to get more excited about "fun lunch" than the kids after my first experience. Seriously, I don't think you can be a part of a fried chicken conversation without having had this chicken. I love it and I go out of my way to get it. read more

one of my coworkers told me about uncle remus.. according to him its a west side thing.. and its equivalent to harolds chicken in the southside.. don't know how true this is tho.. since I love harolds.. I decided to make a trip out and give uncle remus a try. I ordered a 10pc .. fried hard , lemon pepper, and mild sauce on the side.. it is pretty pricey if u ask me.. 10 piece wings for 19 bucks!! almost 2 bucks a wing.. the size of the wings was average.. not big and not small.. the mild sauce is sweater then the harolds sauce... after eating a few wings.. I didn't really like it.. the batter is crispy but it flakes off and doesn't hold onto the chicken.. overall.. its not my cup of tea.. the sauce is pretty decent tho.. but i hate when the batter doesn't stick on to the skin.. maybe ill give it a try again without having it fried hard... but as of now I give it a 2.5 stars read more

This chicken tonight was great!! You have to love the sauce!! Lol. ;D

I could easily make a case for giving this place five stars and the only reason why I don't is because they put the sauce on the chicken rather than on the side. Anyhow I went here expecting to get half a chicken and have two of the pieces saved for later. Yeah that didn't happen. The chicken was so good that it didn't survive a few minutes let alone a few hours. Everything was fried up hot and crispy. It was seasoned down to the bone so good that you didn't even need that sauce that sets it off and takes things to a whole nother level. That aside I wish this place lacks both parking and seating so keep that in mind. read more

Uncle Remus offers tender, if small, pieces of chicken coated and fried in a crispy, if flavorless, batter. The one thing that this place has going for it is price: it's a bargoon.
