Been wanting to try this place for years after all the hype from some friends, finally was able to today. Got wing and a breast, was told I'd get a text in about 20 minutes. Waited 35 and finally went in to ask and they pulled it out the hotbox like it had been sitting there awhile so don't trust their text system as it never came but NBD.. absolutely not even worth a 5 minute wait imo. Really wanted to love it but the sauce is pretty basic, I really don't get the hype other than it is sweet and tasty but not super flavorful. I placed my order then remembered that I did not want the sauce on my chicken I wanted it on the side I was told that they could not do that. I would have to cancel my order and reorder and that it was extra for sauce on the side. I asked could I just pay the difference and was told no. So over time prices have gone up, I get it. As of this review they're charging $2+ per wing. Here is my issue: mini wings! I paid $12 for 4 wings and got 3.5 because one was super tiny. Some chicken shacks will compensate for the lack of size by adding an additional mini which is fair. To make matters worse, I was supposed to receive shrimp with my order and didn't. When I called to report the issue, I was told to come back and pick it up--even though we're in the middle of a snowstorm. I stood at the pickup window while employees stood around talking, ignoring customers waiting for their food. They had excellent customer service at this location. They were very polite and got food done in the amount of time quoted. I ordered their G Pan special. You get 10 pieces of very delicious fried chicken covered in their mild sauce. It's a great deal for about $11. And then of course you also need to order some fries with mild sauce to get along with your chicken. The mild sauce is much sweeter than Harolds, but it doesn't over power the chicken. I placed an order in the Uncle Remus App for delivery. My delivery was scheduled at about 1pm. I got a notification that my order was complete and would be delivered by "DoorDash". At 12:45 I received another notification that my order was delivered. Well I never received the delivery. So I called the restaurant to inquire and the extremely rude young lady who answered the phone basically told me that once my order leaves their resultant that it's not "on them" and it is what it is". What? So I proceed to call the delivery company DoorDash. They were very helpful even though I did not place my order through their App. Unfortunately their driver basically didn't attempt delivery of my food and would not even answer their call when they tried to reach out. DoorDash contacted the restaurant not once but twice. Once to reorder the food and have another driver deliver and once again after Uncle Remus cancelled the second order trying to rectify the situation. So I contacted Uncle Remus again to seek a refund since I paid them directly and never received my order. At this point I'm speaking to a "manager"". Another rude experience. So basically he said that the order was refunded cause he no longer saw it in The system. This was a flat out lie! Because this morning I checked my bank and the full transaction cleared. There was not a refund on my account. Uncle Remus has been a staple In The community for years. It's unfortunate that the level of customer service is lacking when the customer was wronged. I never received my order PERIOD! What the resolution should have been is they go after DoorDash for payment and refunded my money. I've had to contact my bank to dispute a transaction where I didn't not receive what I paid for. This is unacceptable on so many levels. Uncle Remus was at a food truck festival in my area. There were about 16 trucks but they were the best food and service by far!!! We started with tenders spicy and mild. The mild sauce is sweet and just sour enough to make it right. The spicy won my heart. It made your nose run but didn't burn your mouth. We ended up going back for wings and catfish. The catfish was outstanding. How do they make that crust so crispy and flavorful. May I also add that their prices were more than reasonable. I would actually be okay paying more. And let me tell you about their people. Incredibly nice and accommodating. There were lines at all the trucks but this was the one worth waiting for. This evening Rosa J., a.k.a., "Foodie in the Hood," was looking for for some fast food. She didn't do her food thang on foot like the usual manner. Instead, she had a ride with hubby's work vehicle and heard him venting about his annoying work day. Yes, I temporarily change my title to the "Foodie in the Hood" since I was visiting "Uncle Remus" on the Chicago west side, on the southwest corner of Central and Madison. Street parking wasn't difficult at around 1830 hour. There's a memo posted on Uncle R.'s front door to remind patrons NOT to park their vehicles at the lot where Lawrence's Fish & Shrimp is. Well, most people certainly didn't read it. The movie/mixtape seller dude stationing inside Uncle R.'s made the PA...your car will be "toed." As long as your get your parking situation straight like a bamboo, you will be on your way to some legit, nice, and saucy chicken and fish. There's no seating; it's a take-out joint. Visa and master cards are accepted with a government-issued photo identification. After a semi-long wait (approximately 20 minutes), our order was handed to us. While their hot sauce was great for the chicken, the BBQ sauce was delicious. I almost finished the entire plastic container by dipping the dinner roll with it. We ordered the 2-piece catfish combo and fish and chicken combo. For $17, I was SO full. By the way, each combo comes with a dinner roll and a side order of fries. The wait time could have been a bit more excruciating if there were nothing to entertain me. I saw the professionally-done promo video about the history of Uncle Remus, the local family business starting from zero to three (3) locations in Chicago. With that smooth jazz music in the background and a motivational/inspirational word between each chapter, it made the time go by rather fast. Of course, some guy came in and sold some squares. As soon as he came in and saw my white hubby, he commented "no well, fuzzy is here." In actuality, "fuzzy" wasn't here because I knew this Caucasian dude's day job! Service wasn't all too friendly but I'm from down south we have more hospitality.
