=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE If you could choose family, you may want to choose Uncle Lu when you've got a hankering for Taiwanese food in Richmond! Decent food and the less-busy nature of the place make dining-in or takeout a comfortable and quick experience! === 2. FOOD Wan Luan Pork Hock Rice Meal ($14.95): if I could eat pork hock here all of the time, I would! Boneless, tender, gently flavourful - they taste great without sauce on their own or with a forkful of rice! The meal comes with creamed corn, chopped baby Shanghai bok choy, and seaweed - all great sides. Vegetarian Fried Noodles ($12.95): at first glance, the portion looks small. But it's packed with strips of cabbage, carrots, black fungus, and vegetarian ham - yum! Egg Pancake with Corn ($8.50): filling and flavourful - it's packed with corn and has just enough egg to potentially make this dish a meal for someone with a small appetite. Deep Fried Chicken Nuggets ($9.50): cripy outside, meaty inside, but a little too salty for me - the only dish that was disappointing. === 3. SERVICE Thankfully it works well in English (as every other patron speaks Mandarin it seems!) and as attentive when desired - the staff stay on the side but available due to the pandemic. === 4. ENVIRONMENT With a relatively modern dark scheme, the restaurant is comfortable and good for a number of small- and medium-sized groups. Wheelchairs and baby strollers would work; parking is usually plentiful on this side of Continental Centre.

Uncle Lu offers authentic Taiwanese flavours that will keep you coming back! I crave for the pork hock rice from here the most. The meat is always so tender and goes perfectly with the sauce they give. My family is pretty picky when it comes to food but they love this. PRO TIP: Call in beforehand yo order a party sized portion of the pork hock ( it's actually the best) we do this fir family dinners every now and then ** Updated menu as I couldn't find it online

We came at 6:30 for dinner and they ran out of half of the items on menu including their pork hocks. I was really disappointed but was too hungry to go somewhere else so I ordered what's available. The Hakka stir fry and egg plant with intestines were very good. I believe it's a decent restaurant. They just need to improve their inventory management.

My dining experience was a little disappointing- the restaurant ran out of their signature item-pork hock, and oyster mushroom, taiwanese meat ball and many more. At the end, we had to ask what do you actually have from the menu. We ordered stir fried Hakka style pork, eggplant with intestine and 3 spices braised tofu. Throughout our dining time, about 5 groups of people came in to dine or order for take out. The servers did not bring up anything about running out of the pork hock, but until the customers spent time reading the menu and were ready to order. A group of people left after heard the news, and a couple who happened to sit next to me wanted to order 4 dishes, and the restaurant only had 1 available (seriously...?). They looked a little stressed out and pulled out Google map to find other dining options nearby. Why they cannot just inform customers when they handed the menu so it saves each other's time? The eggplant with intestine is my favorite, make sure you order a bowl of rice! I think stir fried Hakka style pork is ok, but my Taiwanese friends really enjoyed it. The 3 spices braised tofu did not have any 3 spices flavor in it but more just like ginger braised tofu.

I heard about the pork hock from this restaurant here and there and decided to try their Small WanLuen Pork Hock recently. The skin was flavourful, soft, and still had enough of a chew. The meat was tender and flavourful. Some of the meat was a bit dry but the sauce really helped. It felt that their special sauce actually completed the dish as it was slightly sweet and it had enough spice (horseradish?) that cut through the grease while not overwhelming the flavour or texture. There was a decent amount given the price and it's generally worth trying.

Lu is my favourite uncle ! And I have many uncles ! ! Jokes aside they're really better than what their rating would suggest otherwise . All of their Taiwanese offerings like bitter melon with pineapple and chicken soup , braised pork on rice and signature pork hock are delish and on point . Do save room for the fried ice-cream ( filed under appies ) as it makes a great after meal treat . Drop by grab a bite and maybe he'll become your fave too lol

We were looking for a place for Taiwanese food that is not as crazy busy as most of the bubble tea places and we found this place. They have a great selection of authentic Taiwanese food. For my lunch, I ordered the traditional spicy braised beef noodle. The broth was flavourful and the beef was braised to tender goodness!

Decent Taiwanese place located in a strip mall just east of Yaohan behind a park They are closed on tuesdays and take cash only. Got the Lou ru fan and pork hock rice plate. Lou ru fan was on the appetizer menu but was enough for a meal - it was decent nothing to complain about but not necessarily jumping for joy either. Same with the pork hock Milk tea was good

This place hands down has one of the most authentic Taiwanese food in North America. Has become one of the stops I'll come whenever I visit Vancouver. Price have definitely gone up in the past few years but with worldwide inflation I can't complain.

This is your typical Taiwanese place. The prices, portions are decent but the best dish everyone should order is the pigs feet. It is one of the best pigs feet I've had in town. This dish only is the one reason why you should eat here. This place only takes cash

Have been here couple timers in last couple years, only for one reason -- their sauce for pork hock. A bit sweet with strong garlic juice. The star item of the restaurant. Their other Taiwanese dishes are pretty good too. My biggest complaint is the uncomfortable smell in dining room from aged furniture or decoration materials.

I haven't been to many Taiwanese places yet, and that really needs to change! Uncle Lu serves the best fried chicken I've had in years, if not ever. The deep fried chicken nuggets are intensely and uniquely flavoured, and generously salted, making for a perfect fried snack! I need to eat more of this as soon as possible. This was also my first time trying three-cup chicken (san bei ji), and I thought it was very nice - the bits of ginger and basil mixed into the chicken were tasty additions to an already great glazy, aromatic sauce, and it was served in a sizzling hot bowl that kept things warm. Once I'd eaten through the chicken, mixing my rice in with the rest of the sauce was delicious. I'm glad I got this and not something else, though - I did have a nibble of one of their signature pork dishes as well, and didn't like it very much, but happily I had a bowl of great chicken instead. On top of it all, everything was really affordable - a bargain considering how tasty the meats were. Service was friendly, but actually a bit slow and inattentive - we never got refills on our tea (which was quite nice!), and had to flag down staff for our orders and for the bill even though the restaurant was only about half full. Maybe it was an off day? Either way, it was worth coming here for the deep fried chicken nuggets alone! Those things are amazing.

What's appealing here is that their Instagram advertises daily specials so you can get some dishes for a great discount (like 40% off). We tried the braised combo (pork ear, pork intestines, fish cake), Taiwanese egg wrap, braised pork sauce rice with deep fried pork chop, and yam taro mochi balls. The braised combo is pretty solid - I didn't really like the funkiness to the intestines (I generally enjoyed it in barbecue settings) but the fish cake was fantastic. I also liked the texture of the pork ears. The Taiwanese egg wrap was a bit tasteless, so I wouldn't recommend. Braised pork sauce rice is the lu ruo fan which is a large portion with seaweed, bean sprouts, and soup on the side. Pork chop was flavorful and juicy but not crispy batter, which is okay. Yam taro mochi balls were sweet and chewy. I don't like taro but I loved this dessert! Service is okay. They give a water jug for self pour but the water jug was of questionable cleanliness. The specials were not discounted so we called it out and we weren't told that we had to put the order with a server, not the QR code, so it was a strange interaction. They ended up honoring the discount. Also, they shut down ordering 1 min before 10:30pm - guess they didn't want more money as we wanted to order 1 more dish and they preemptively told the kitchen to close. Sure it's fine no big deal, it was a lot of food.

The dining space is small but the decoration inside makes you feel like you transported to a different country. Marshmallow Thick Toast 4/5 The toast was about an inch thick, well toasted outside with a pillowy soft center. There's some melted chocolate on the bottom that added to the smores vibe. The marshmallows on top weren't very thick, so it melted to an even layer with perfect browning. The toast was cut into 9 pieces so it can be shared but given the portion I think 1-2 people would be fitting for this dessert. We weren't too hungry, so we shared amongst 4. Jasmine Tea Jelly 4/5 I really liked how fragrant the jelly was and that the jelly was a softer jelly that reminds you of Aiyu jelly. The after taste was a bit bitter but I feel like that tells me it was brewed and made and not just bought to serve. It's served with a splash of half and half I believe. To-Go I wanted to try and compare all the tea flavored jellies they had, Jasmine, Oolong and Earl Grey Tea Jelly. Packaged with small packets of the half and half to add later. The best was OOLONG 5/5- it had a slight roasted tea flavor that was refreshing and comforting at the same time. What you would want from a milk tea. Second best was Jasmine - fragrant and less bitter than the one I had in restaurant, typical jasmine flavor that's lightly floral and not too heavy Earl Grey 3/5 - it was good if you like earl grey like me, but it has an intensely strong fragrance and flavor that might be off-putting if you're not used to the taste. It was by far the strongest floral taste and smell of the three. I'd definitely be back to get these to go, they carry well and you can cross borders with them :)
