Lu Ruo fan (滷肉飯)- the classic Taiwanese dish
    Evan C.

Just wanted to add to my last review and add two more photos. We came here again. I had a couple more dishes that I liked. - Ru Rou Fan (滷肉飯) the classic Taiwanese fatty ground pork on rice dish. Ok this one really hit the spot for me. It's not ground pork - it's much better. The best versions of this dish have essentially julienned fatty pork, not ground meat - where each bit is like 1-2cm with half fat and half meat. That's what this is. The meat and sauce and pickled veggies mix together beautifully and is really hearty. Comes with a marinated egg. - onion pancake with egg - fairly good too - pig ear - I love this dish. It's not spicy by the way. Good flavour. Again definitely recommended. Lots of dishes I can come back to try still.

Warm and hearty meal. Always a great place to get some Taiwanese food such as beef noodle soup, Taiwanese fried chicken and different braised dishes. Tried their braised chicken leg for the first time. Was marinated well!

I really like it when Taiwanese places have the set meal that is not extra costs. I got the deep fried tentacles set meal (called bento here). It came with way too much rice. Almost feels like 2 bowls of rice. There was plenty of side dishes which is good. I picked the one that is supposed to have pork sauce on the rice but there is so so little. For $19, the amount of squid tentacles was less than I thought. We got the deep fried chicken nugget appetizer for $13. It was also small. Fried well and light on flavor. I really enjoyed that they didnt skimp on the fried basil. My husband got the beef shank dry noodles. He said it was ok.

Tasty Taiwanese food. Food comes fast and is delicious. Hot and comforting hot pot. Delicious fried rice. Construction on Granville St. is annoying though.

Good to have them back in business!! Food was great! But I guess because of food cost and also since they are "new" in this area, they are starting with a smaller than before menu! Love their signature Beef Noodles and also their Taiwanese Fried Pork Chop! Will come again to see more new items added!!

Yay to new Taiwanese joints (and food in general lol) in the Marpole hood! I've been yearning the opening of Pearl House since a banner popped up here and there on my daily trek up and down Granville. I recall multiple recommendations from friends that this is the place to go for a solid Taiwanese meal. My party and I tried the signature beef noodles (not pictured as it was too slurp worthy) and the chicken nuggets on rice. We thought the menu was slightly smaller than expected, but all meals were reasonably priced. I like that the chicken nuggets, both flavour + freshness on was point, piping hot and not too fatty as I like it, with a well balanced portion of sides. The beef noodles were okay but not enough to be my number 1 choice. The broth was quite thick (thickened?) but not rich enough in flavour. My party typically defaults to the wider noodle type when it comes to beef noodles, and most places have noodle options interchangeable. The wide noodles here were an optional add on. We opted out but none the less the regular noodles were just as tasty. We loved the addition of new food options in the neighborhood, this place is spacious, clean and opens until 10pm, great for a late nite bite in the quiet hood. I'd been keen to give the remaining menu items a few more attempts. When it comes to beef noodles I'm still a die hard with another neighborhood classic!

Chicken nugget fried rice and Deep fried unagi fried rice with milk tea

Neither of us wanted beef noodle soup so we ended up with 2 fried rice dishes. The Chicken Nugget fried rice had crispy and juicy pieces of chicken. The Deep Fried Unagi fried rice is something I've never seen before but it was surprisingly tasty. The unagi was very crunchy on the outside but still soft on the inside. I think the fried rice could've used a bit more seasoning though. You can add milk tea to any meal for $4. The menu is not that big but covers the usual favourites. The restaurant is also very modern and spacious.

So they've finally consolidated their OG Burnaby and Richmond locations into one ! I like it here cos 1) it's closer to me and 2) brings back so many memories of the good old days . Even their playlist features T-pop from 10+ years ago . Respect ! Pearl House is definitely one of the oldest Taiwanese restaurants in town and it's probably where i had my first taste of TFC . Their beef noodle soup still rocks , just remember to add a side order of " pickles " to go with it . Enjoy 30% off everything on menu during their grand-opening period . Dine-in only !

The gentleman (owner?) greeted us and provided us with some suggestions on their best sellers. During our dining experience, he was a little loud with shouting instructions to the kitchen and we did feel a bit rushed to finish our meal and not occupy the table with diners lining up. I ordered the beef noodle soup, and the noodles were prepared well (good texture and not soggy) and the soup had a slight but not overwhelm sour taste from the preserved vegetables. The beef wasn't as tender as it could be, but it wasn't chewy or tough to eat. Prices are reasonable at around $20 after tax and tips. While it wasn't the best or most authentic beef noodle soup I've had, it does hit the spot if I'm craving Taiwanese food downtown or want a hot bowl of noodle soup on a cold day.

I think most people do that so it also gets filled up during the lunch hour rush. The food is ok, nothing special. The price increase makes it even less appealing. I don't know why there is chili in my Taiwanese beef noodle soup. I don't like spicy soup. Lucky I am ok with spice but I wish it is stated in the menu? So if you cannot take spicy food, check with them before ordering. The beef noodle soup is tasty as I do like the addition of pickled vegetables in it, giving a bit of tartness. The beef is tender though the quantity is very little. More noodles than meat ratio. The combo is totally not worth it now that the price has gone up to about $13. If you want rice and noodle for lunch, I think Peaceful Restaurant across the street is a better bet. At least the portion is bigger.

Classic Brown Sugar Ice Bear $16+: definitely very fun and cute, and it's a shareable size. I liked how there was a layer of grass jelly and chewy konjac jelly on the bottom for added texture. The snout is made of ice cream and topped with a pair of Oreo ears. I'd recommend eating it quickly or perhaps getting a separate bowl to mix it. The ice is traditional Taiwanese-styled, so it is coarse and therefore doesn't absorb the syrup as well as bingsoo for example (which is fine/powdery ice). Soft Serve w/ Freeze Dried Fruit 6+: you can also get the soft serve in a cone which is about $1 cheaper, but you can't add toppings to it. I really liked the real freeze-dried fruits, especially the blueberries. There are other fruits available too (eg. Strawberries, raspberry, pistachio etc) which are all addition $2. The blackberries were a bit to big and had lots of seeds, so the texture was a bit too crunchy mixed with the soft ice cream. Dried blueberries were amazing though and jam packed with flavour. Since it's real fruit, some of them may be quite sour (which I actually enjoyed) as it pairs well with the sweetness of the soft serve. Soft Serve w/ Brown Sugar Pearls $6+: brown sugar syrup wasn't too sweet, so I enjoyed this as well. My favourite would still be adding freeze dried blueberries though, as it's more unique and fruity (personal preference) Espresso Meets Grass Jelly & Gelato $8+: pretty strong coffee drink, unlike a lot of bubble tea/dessert places, so I'd only recommend it to regular coffee drinkers (me). The drink is served hot with a scoop of gelato which melts very quickly. LOTS of soft grass jelly - you'll definitely get a mouthful of it every sip. Good amount of sweetness for me.

The chicken was ok but very small portion. the accompaniments were pretty standard. The dish also took forever to prepare somehow, especially when there is literally NOBODY else waiting. This place was literally empty. Overall the dish was just not great. Seems like the product of a struggling business trying to stay afloat. The entire mini mall was essentially dead - not sure how anything here survives tbh. The place is really run-down and dingy as well, for those who have not been to this market before. i wont be back.

Each time, service was super slow, some staff are not well trained on how to greet customers or talk to customers, and I got green onions every time I asked for no green onions (I never gave it back though). I know it's not a big deal if you forget once or twice, but it's been like this every single time. I can easily pick it out, but if you have the option for customers not to put it in, then I do feel it's a slight problem if you constantly forget. The portions have been getting smaller and small every time. Overall, not as impressed as I used to be. I dont think it's the employees problems though, the boss is just under hiring for rush hour time! (Even during non rush hour their service is kind of slow..). They have people running around but half the tables are empty and not clean. They don't have enough employees hence everyone has to wait for a long time. Hoping to see some improvements in the near future.

When I asked, the manger rudely stated it's because we're 5. She was aggressive and argumentative which was not appreciated. This doesn't make sense as this was the largest table in the whole restaurant as well. Now when we asked about other smaller tables that we could move next to this table, their excuse was that other guest "may show up".  Now what about the current guest? They could easily have moved a two person table next to the 4 person table. Yet they were saving for guest who were clearly not coming. how silly is this by not moving a few tables to keep your customers happy. Will not be going to this location from now on.
