Beef Shank and Tendon Noodle Soup
    Michael C.

We usually come to Vancouver/Richmond area a few times a year and we always have to come here to eat during the trip. This restaurant is in the Steveston area and street parking can be difficult during the busy hours. However, there are some pay to park parking lots. This is one of our favorite restaurants and they serve all the Taiwanese dishes that you would expect from popcorn chicken to stinky tofu to oyster vermicelli and beef noodle soup, etc. We love their fried food especially the squid tentacles and popcorn chicken. It is very crispy, flavorful and delicious. We have also tried their rice bowls in the past and recommend the deep fried pork belly rice bowl. The oyster vermicelli is another solid choice and tasted great and came in a large bowl loaded with oysters. They also have a great selection of bubble tea drinks. Highly recommend this place!!

First time eating here, service was good, we ordered their oyster omelette, beef shank and tendon noodles, deep fried pig blood and deep fried intestines. Of these the noodles were outstanding, the beef shank was cooked perfectly as was the tendon. We'll definitely be back for this dish alone. Deep fried pig blood was kind of hard and chewy, not what I expected, the oyster omelette had too much starch in it for our tastes, the deep fried intestines weren't what I was expecting, it was passable but not outstanding. Nice experience overall. Prices were very reasonable.

    sausage in a sausage

Taiwanese restaurant at Steveston Village. Small place with dark interior. Was mostly filled up on a Sunday night. Ordered a few dishes that the staff recommended. Tried stinky tofu for the first time. They definitely had a stink to them. Not overwhelming, but just a bit off. Tastes like any other fried tofu. Glad that I tried it, but not my jam. Second appetizer was the sausage in a sausage. It's a meat sausage inside a larger sticky rice sausage in a hotdog configuration. The meat sausage was good. The rice sausage did have a casing so not the easiest to cut into pieces to share. Last appetizer was their oyster pancake. The style of oyster pancake has egg and was very liquid, not a lot of starch. Interesting style and tasted decent. Had a decent amount oyster meat. The mains were pretty good. Got a bowl their beef soup noodles. The soup was very flavorful. Decent amount of beef pieces which were well stewed, and noodles were soft but not too soft. The fried bento box was nice to photograph. It has fried squid, chicken and fish balls. All the fried stuff was pretty tasty, especially the chicken. Overall bill was $75ish before tip. Enough food for 3 of us, so pretty reasonably priced. Food took a little time to come out.

Here is a hidden (?) gem in the Steveston area for classic Taiwanese eats! I can't believe I slept on this place for so long because I think I may have found a new favourite for the summer. My friend and I decided on a whim to grab some food while on a walk. The servers were very welcoming and immediately sat us down. The menu is vast with lots of different choices and everything looked so so delicious. I had the chance to try my friend's order (beef noodle soup) and it was very delicious - the shank and tendon were tender and the soup was very flavourful. And ahhhhh I loved my rice set - the variety was absolutely amazing. I am truly appreciative when I can have a complex meal with all the food groups. My favourite thing of all was the fact that they were playing cat videos on the TV LOL. I will be back!! I must try more!!

    Beef Shank Roti

Been here a few times, and I can definitely say this is our go-to Taiwanese place located in Steveston. These are our must haves: Oyster Pancake -- chewy goodness, brings me back to my childhood days. Beef Shank Roti -- tasty beef wrapped in green onion pancake (the wife's fav). Popcorn Chicken Rice Bowl -- always a hit with the kiddies, and me. Deep Fried Chicken and Pork Monster Bowl -- enough for two people, or one if you don't like to share like me. Service, always friendly. Like most Chinese place, this place only accepts cash or debit card.

Beef scallion pancakes, half shank half tendon noodle soup, popcorn chicken

Amazing food that brought me back to my childhood memories. We ordered beef scallion pancakes, half shank half tendon noodles, and popcorn chicken. Every dish was packed with authentic and aromatic flavors. Restaurant is a bit small, so we had to wait for about 15-20 minutes, but so worth it! Service was wonderful and attentive.

Went with a friend for dinner on Thursday and parking was easy to find (and free). It was quite empty when we arrived just before 7pm and we were given a spacious booth. Light up Christmas tree decor at every table which was cute, and we were given the option of cold water or hot tea. I ordered the sous vide egg and scallops on rice, my friend got the beef shank noodle soup, and we shared a gua bao, popcorn chicken, and beef shank roti. One common theme in all dishes was copious amounts of garlic. I personally love garlic so this didn't bother me at all, but if you're not a huge garlic lover you might want to ask them to be light handed. The beef shank roti was quite interesting - I'm more used to the traditional wrap and this one was definitely flakier but at the same time, the roll didn't hold its shape as well and it was more of a loose roll. The dipping sauce is slightly spicy but overall I enjoyed this dish and would order again. Popcorn chicken - pretty standard. Gua bao had a runny boiled egg split in half skewered together, I thought this was okay, the bun was very soft. I really liked the sous vide egg scallop bowl. Super super generous with the sheer quantity of scallops and I loved the sous vide egg with the yolk melt. The rice underneath was also seasoned well, and the bowl came with a bowl of soup (chicken? pork?) asian style - so clear broth, with more garlic and it was actually quite tasty. Definitely would order this again. My friend's beef noodle soup was also heavily garlic-ed and she actually felt like there was too much beef in there? So if you've ever felt like your beef noodle soup didn't have enough beef, you should definitely try CHJ's version! I didn't realize they closed at 8pm but they never rushed us and it was a very pleasant catchup for us and we enjoyed our time there. One recommendation would be to add Chinese on the regular menu and/or include a description of the dish so customers have a better idea of what's available to order (for example, we wanted to order the beef roll but wasn't sure which item it corresponded with on the menu since there was no "roll" in the name).

The stinky tofu was fried to perfection. The pork intestine was tasty with great texture.

CHJ Bistro 周鶴家 serves Taiwanese dishes and typical sweets cold drinks. It is super crispy and gives a unique Taiwanese fried food look. The Aburi BBQ Eel and Fried Egg on Rice has a good balance yet classic flavours. A nice dish for two people to share. The House Winter Melon Sweet Drink is amazing! It is delightfully soothing and refreshing. Stevenson Village is one of Richmond's top tourist destinations. CHJ Bistro 周鶴家 has taken a big step from a food truck at Richmond Night Market to a small Taiwanese restaurant in Stevenson Village. You can easily find CHJ Bistro by finding the famous brewery pub in the village. It is located behind Britannia Brewing Steveston, and its address is unit #240-12240 Second Avenue in Richmond. My friend and I got two snacks and a pop corn chicken with rice to share. That was more food than we could finish but we just couldn't resist! The food was amazing! The popcorn chicken is a classic and the egg tofu and Taiwanese hot dog were delicious and authentic. I'd recommend coming here over the Richmond night market any time! With the beautiful weather, I love my patio seating. Indoor seating is also available. The service was great. Looks like a family owned business. They close at 8pm but the owner were super kind and let us stay and chat for longer. 10/10 would recommend and I can't wait to come back and try their other items!

    Oyster Mee Sua (vermicelli)
    Carolyn L.

There is oyster mee sua here! It is funny how you do not miss certain food items until you cannot get it easily. I love Shihlin Taiwan Oyster Mee sua, doubly good when you add vinegar and chili to it. So I had to get it when I saw this on the menu. The Mee sua was on point with the starchy slurry mouthfeel. It was not super thick but not so diluted either. This version came with 4 big pieces of oysters and some bamboo shoots. Sliced fresh chili was sprinkled on it but there was not much heat from it. I liked the Mee sua but did not really like the oysters as they were coated with some starchy flour. The texture reminded me of potato starch? The same gooey taste like fried oyster omelette (or luak). I prefer the oysters to be without any coating. The popcorn chicken was really good. Very tasty. It was served with lots of fresh chopped garlic. Due to covid restriction, it was only outdoor dining or take out. Limited seating with 3 tables. Service was great and staff were friendly. While I was there, the place was busy with many people doing pick up. I will be back to try the beef noodle soup and rice dishes. Stinky tofu is also available but I never like it. Good selection of Taiwanese street snack food. Note: cash or debit only.

I feel like GREAT Taiwanese food is so rare in Vancouver, there is always the place that sells Taiwanese popcorn chicken, but that's about it. I'm here for the full Taiwanese experience - this is coming from someone who has never been to Taiwan before (FYI). My party arrived at around 2:30pm on a blazing hot weekend, to our surprise, the full patio and indoor dining area was open for our selection. We opted for an indoor booth. All covid protocols in place prior to entry (sanitization station, temperature checks). I recommend accessing their menu via QR code to reduce touching things, just scan and go, paper menu also available. The star of our mea has to be the Taiwanese hot dog. I've had this item elsewhere, and it was alright. At CHJ, this dish was perfectly executed. The Taiwanese sausage is typically seasoned on the sweeter side, it's nestled in between a sticky rice 'bun', garnished with some housemade pickled veggies & a few pieces of cilantro. The attack plan (my preferred way to eat this) is to slice coins / chunks of the sausage + stick rice so each portion consists of both elements. Eating this like a normal hot dog is NOT the way to go. Another classic dish we had to try was the oyster omelette; presentation in the Asian street food arena is not top priority, this is one of the dishes that suppose to overwhelm on the flavour side. It consist, from bottom up, a pan fried pancake made of bean sprouts, egg and thumb sized oysters. A glutinous, potato-starchy blob is congeals everything together. A thick sauce (slightly bland in my opinion) is lathered on top, and garnished with cilantro. This is a messy dish to get into, though I do think it's quite delicious. The oysters was a put off for me because every piece I bit into was incredibly fishy - I'm sure there a better oysters out there!! The non-gong platter works as a nice appy plate to share. Consisting of a variety of cuttlefish balls, shrimp tempura, Taiwanese sausage etc, this was good. Another friend of mine though this was disappointing because it merely "fried fish balls drizzled in chicken sauce" and unarguably, it is! They assume the fried garlic version of this platter would be much better. Perhaps another trip? From a recent IG post, we were able to order an off-menu item: beef noodles with XLB. It's exactly what it is, a beef noodle order with XLB added. The soup is well seasoned, could be slightly richer? The noodle were of medium thickness, they did lose their chewy texture by the time I dug in. The XLB are the thicker skinned type, they're more like a northern style dumpling wrapped with the XLB pleats. It did taste good, though not the dish that would bring me back again and again. There are a few more items I'd like to try from their menu but that'll be another day. Overall, happy to have another great Taiwanese spot join the Vancouver food scene!

I went here with my friend after a long day of hiking in Squamish, so that was quite a bit of a drive. Regardless, I thought it was all worth it. We were seated 15 minutes before closing time (and I didn't realize closing time was 8pm), but we were still gladly served. We ordered the braised pork belly over rice and the beef shank noodle soup, both of which were quite delicious. I'm not Taiwanese myself, but my friends back home are and based on the photos, it was authentic. Another reason I knew it was authentic was because we had a conversation with the owner, and she asked us how we found her restaurant. I said, "in a TikTok" haha, and she was pretty surprised since most of the patrons who dine there simply find it through word of mouth from other previous Chinese/Taiwanese customers. Not only was the food great, but so was the hospitality. My friend and I both joined the clean plate club, and it was time to ask for the bill when we learned that they only accepted WeChat, debit, or CAD -- which we didn't have since we only carried around credit card and USD (which in hindsight was not a smart move). Thankfully, she accepted our USD and gave us a converted price, which was really nice because I know a lot of other establishments will take it 1:1 conversion. I recommend this restaurant to anyone because you'd feel like you were dining in someone's home, and that in itself is already quite special.

What's appealing here is that their Instagram advertises daily specials so you can get some dishes for a great discount (like 40% off). We tried the braised combo (pork ear, pork intestines, fish cake), Taiwanese egg wrap, braised pork sauce rice with deep fried pork chop, and yam taro mochi balls. The braised combo is pretty solid - I didn't really like the funkiness to the intestines (I generally enjoyed it in barbecue settings) but the fish cake was fantastic. I also liked the texture of the pork ears. The Taiwanese egg wrap was a bit tasteless, so I wouldn't recommend. Braised pork sauce rice is the lu ruo fan which is a large portion with seaweed, bean sprouts, and soup on the side. Pork chop was flavorful and juicy but not crispy batter, which is okay. Yam taro mochi balls were sweet and chewy. I don't like taro but I loved this dessert! Service is okay. They give a water jug for self pour but the water jug was of questionable cleanliness. The specials were not discounted so we called it out and we weren't told that we had to put the order with a server, not the QR code, so it was a strange interaction. They ended up honoring the discount. Also, they shut down ordering 1 min before 10:30pm - guess they didn't want more money as we wanted to order 1 more dish and they preemptively told the kitchen to close. Sure it's fine no big deal, it was a lot of food.

Marshmallow Thick Toast 4/5 The toast was about an inch thick, well toasted outside with a pillowy soft center. There's some melted chocolate on the bottom that added to the smores vibe. The marshmallows on top weren't very thick, so it melted to an even layer with perfect browning. The toast was cut into 9 pieces so it can be shared but given the portion I think 1-2 people would be fitting for this dessert. We weren't too hungry, so we shared amongst 4. Jasmine Tea Jelly 4/5 I really liked how fragrant the jelly was and that the jelly was a softer jelly that reminds you of Aiyu jelly. The after taste was a bit bitter but I feel like that tells me it was brewed and made and not just bought to serve. It's served with a splash of half and half I believe. To-Go I wanted to try and compare all the tea flavored jellies they had, Jasmine, Oolong and Earl Grey Tea Jelly. Packaged with small packets of the half and half to add later. The best was OOLONG 5/5- it had a slight roasted tea flavor that was refreshing and comforting at the same time. What you would want from a milk tea. Second best was Jasmine - fragrant and less bitter than the one I had in restaurant, typical jasmine flavor that's lightly floral and not too heavy Earl Grey 3/5 - it was good if you like earl grey like me, but it has an intensely strong fragrance and flavor that might be off-putting if you're not used to the taste. It was by far the strongest floral taste and smell of the three. I'd definitely be back to get these to go, they carry well and you can cross borders with them :)
