I've been wanting to drop by here for years and finally had the chance and was disappointed. I came by on a Sunday at 2pm and they were already out of the satay skewers, hainanese chicken, and the Sunday special bak kut teh which was disappointing. I got the roti canai which came with curry chicken and the sizzling tofu with seafood which came with rice. The roti canai was very buttery and flaky (a bit different from others I have but good). The tofu was alright- I thought the breading was a bit too thick for my liking. The tofu was silky smooth though and had decent amount of seafood! Restroom was a bit dirty.
Nut allergy friendly: There's a peanut sauce for the satay skewers, but I was fine with everything else. The employees are fluent in English so no problems in ordering! Time to Order: 20-45 minutes? We were in a group so maybe that's not accurate, but we also ordered a lot. Roti Canai (5/5): One of the best roti Canai I've ever had. The curry is thick with potato and super tender chicken and the roti canai bread is chewy but somehow still flaky and flavorful at the same time. It was so good that I ordered another one for myself to go to let my partner try it at home. Malaysian Chicken Satay (5/5): You will read "tender chicken" in my review several times. It's not a joke. The chicken nearly melts in your mouth. The last time I had meat this tender it was a filet mignon that was 6x the price of this dish. Char Kuey Tow (4.5/5) and Mee Goreng (4.5/5): Yeah we got both the flat noodle and the mee goreng. Because both are awesome. Noodles stayed chewy, beansprout and veggies were great, proteins were great. Not too saucy. Solid. Uncle Chen's Sizzling Tofu (4.5/5): We got this seafood style and it comes loaded with shrimp, calamari.. fantastic. Great by itself or on rice. The middle gets a little soggy if you let it sit too long, so chow down on this whole it's hot! Roasted Hainanese Chicken (4/5): Nothing against the dish itself, I just don't like all the bones. Yes, the chicken was beautifully tender. Chicken rice, also fantastic. Curry Chicken Puff (4.5/5): So this was way more filling than I expected. It's like an intense Asian empanada? Totally worth it. Comes out really hot. Lastly, we got a serenade from the man himself. Yes, he pulls out a mic and sings. It's his break from cooking during the dinner rush. So, you might indeed get dinner and a show! It's beautiful to see someone who enjoys what he's doing - and his voice is such that some people think it's a song over the intercom instead of live music, take that how you will :) TL;DR: Absolutely contends for Best in Katy. Yes, it lived up to the hype. Come and eat family style and you won't be disappointed!
I came to Uncle Chin's because we were craving Malaysian/Singaporean food. It was a far drive for me, but I think it was worth it. We came 30 minutes after it was opened for the day, and there were already a couple parties ahead of us. We were quickly seated, and we were told in advance there was only one cook in the kitchen (Uncle Chin himself!) and that it could be a while before we get our food. We did not mind the wait, and it actually took about 20 minutes from the time we placed our order to when we got our food, so the wait was not bad at all. We ordered their Malaysian Satay. Sadly, there was no beef or combo available, and they only had chicken, but it was delicious! We also had their Laksha and their stir fried noodles. We ate everything. It was perfectly seasoned, very flavorful. There were many proteins in each of our dishes. There was plenty of parking, and despite there being only one person running the front, things went pretty smoothly. The ambiance is great for a casual date night or a family gathering. I would definitely come here again even with the same constraints they had.
We'd been meaning to try this place for a long time and finally got around to it. It's a small, hole-in-the-wall mom and pop spot that feels really cozy, which I actually appreciated. It gives the place a very homey feel. The servers were all super friendly and attentive and the owner was also very kind and checked on us a few times. The food and drinks were all delicious, good portions, and prices were reasonable. Everything came out in a timely manner. The drinks took a little longer, but it wasn't a big deal. We also ordered a noodle dish that I forgot to take a picture of. One thing to note: I wouldn't recommend using the restroom if you can avoid it. My little one really had to go and it wasn't clean at all or well kept which was a bit of a downside especially with a kid. Overall, we had a great experience and I'm glad we finally tried it.
In spite of all the accolades and having garnered one of the highest ratings in the area, Uncle Chin's still feels slept on (#1) and is not on enough radars within the foodcentric community. Yet for those who have dined here, it's an experience like no other and arguably the best Malaysian option in greater Houston. Located on a busy stretch of Mason Road, it is entirely too easy to miss which means customers are here because they knew where to go. It is small, but quaint in every way. There are only 30 seats at best, with the series of counter seats, as well as small tables. The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming, making first timers and regulars all feel at home at the same time. The food stands out, not simply because it's a rare cuisine in the area, but because of how good it is. The curry chicken has an excellent flavor and it's full of chunks of bone in chicken potatoes and an egg. Both the chicken and beef satays are often tender and strangely addicting, as is their char kuey teow. I'd become fond of their roti canai, which is served with a fluffy yet flakey roti, and served with a flavorful mini bowl of curry. The laksa is also highly recommended, since the broth has an excellent creamy base of coconut milk and is fragrant with every slurp. While the beef rendang and bak kut teh are only available on weekends, it is most definitely worth seeking out. The roasted Hainanese chicken is a unique spin on the classic dish and when available, the kaya puffs are an excellent way to close out the meal. Franco, the owner is a kind and gentle soul. His passion for food and community oozes through every aspect of the business. Beyond the food, he is absolutely the star, enough to where many locals would come just to be served and serenaded (#2) by him. It truly is a dinner and a show. I dedicate review #5300 to this Katy gem, which has become a destination and one of my favorite businesses in the entire area. __________ (#1) For the uninitiated: Relatively unknown. Two words: Absolutely spectacular! I hadn't eaten in a few days (long story) and I found myself in Katy on a Friday so I did a quick Yelp search and came upon this place. As I dug deeper, I read Jando's glowing review word-for-word and found myself salivating. Well, I ventured out to S. Mason for lunch, found the place easily, appreciated the ample and free parking, and walked in. I had read before that they used to be closed on Tuesdays and Saturdays, but now they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but open for dinner on Saturdays. (See my photos.) Anyhow, we walked in and found the place homey. Nothing fancy - just a nice, clean, homey Malaysian restaurant. Not too big, and not too small. We placed our order of roti canai, stir fried flat rice noodles, seafood sizzling tofu, and topped it off with a Malaysian milk tea. Oh my - we were satisfied and stuffed as a party of 2. We ended up boxing up almost 40% of the meal. The roti was near perfection - crispy, hot, flaky. The dipping sauce was perfectly seasoned with the right amount of heat. It included chunks of chicken and potato. You must absolutely order this one. I love me some stir fried flat rice noodles so we got that one with chicken. Overall, it was excellent. Portions were a tad smaller than I would like for the price. Also it could use a little bit of hot sauce so we asked for a side of sriracha which they gladly and quickly brought. The sizzling tofu - OMG so good. I can't even explain it. I just love it so much and the portions are huge. I'm not sure what the vegetable flavor would taste like but we tried the seafood one and have no regrets. Lastly the milk tea was just because we felt like splurging and it was also a great decision. The tea flavor itself is deep and the overall drink is very nice. We got it iced. And an honorable mention - we ran into Uncle Chin (at least we assume it was Uncle Chin) and told him his food was amazing. I think he really appreciated it. He seems like a super nice guy and I want his business to do really well. If that wasn't Uncle Chin then we talked to a random person and raved about the food... Many thanks for Jando for the raving review that convinced me to try this place. Loved it and would absolutely come back as soon as possible!
We used to like Uncle Chen before we left Texas, so after moving back, we decided to drive 50 minutes one way and had lunch there. There were about four other customers during a weekday lunch, which isn't bad, especially given the Katy location, which is a bit out of the way. There was only one server working the front--a woman who was very efficient and clearly ran things on a tight, almost military-like schedule. She handled everything well, but her demeanor felt too direct and can be off putting. She said it really loudly towards the kitchen that she prepared the rice. The food came out in about 15 minutes, which was longer than I expected. However, I understand why--Franco, the owner, appeared to be the only one cooking and prepping food. As for the food, the noodles were a bit too greasy for my taste. My husband enjoyed his curry, but it wasn't anything particularly memorable. Unfortunately, we both experienced some stomach discomfort afterward, possibly due to the greasiness. Overall, we're glad we gave it another try, but this visit didn't quite live up to our previous experiences.
If you're looking to have a cozy and delicious meal, run here because this place serves one of the best Malaysian food I've ever had. The food is cooked by one chef from Sabah, Malaysia. Everything tasted SO GOOD. I came here for dinner and ordered their roti canai, chicken + beef skewers, and chicken char kuey teow. The roti was warm and fluffy. It went so perfectly with the bowl of curry, which was packed with so much flavor. The satay skewers were delicious as you can taste the amazing grilled flavor. The char kuey teow had a strong wok hay aroma which is chef's kiss in a noodle dish like this. This entire meal warmed my SOUL. The chef came out to ask how the food was. He was friendly and so is everyone working at the restaurant. Be patient with the restaurant since they are a small family run establishment, but it's so worth the wait. I will be back here to try the other items on their menu! There is sufficient parking by the restaurant. It's located in a seemingly busy street, near a Sonic.
I came across this resturant before I left Texas. I am so glad I made this stop, it was prob the best thing I ate during my short trip!! I was welcomed by the owner who was the sweetest. It's a small mom and pop shop and apparently the owner cooks everything himself! THATS AAMAZING. I heard it gets pretty packed Fridays and Sundays, so be aware of that. I came on a weekday lunch so it wasn't too crowded. Food: you can def tell it was made with love and details. Everything was so delicious. We got the combo B which came with the following: Beef skewers 8/10: so tender and juicy. I was kinda bummed out bc he ran out of chicken skewers that day but the beef was still really good and flavorful. The peanut sauce it came with really brought the dish together. Char Kuey teow 9/10: this dish is similar to the Chinese chow fun. But this Malaysian style noodle was WAY BETTER. it just had way more flavor than the typical chow funs I get at Chinese restaurants. It wasn't too oily and came with a good amount of meat. Roasted Hainanese chicken rice 10/10: wow my favorite dish I got. The chickens roast was so good especially the skin that was seasoned perfectly and had that nice crisp on the outside. This is a MUST GET. The rice was also garlic/ginger rice which is the best rice to get with this dish. The rice was so fragrant. I also got the Malaysian milk tea. Pro tip: don't get less sweet bc it's already pretty not sweet. I usually like my drinks 50% sweet but the milk tea is already like that. It was a unique drink but it didn't suit my taste that much since it was too strong of a flavor that it almost tasted coffee like (I don't like coffee). The server who made our drink was so nice and explained how he made the drinks. Overall service and food were amazing and I would so come back if I was in town. PLS CHECK THEM Out!
Uncle chins is a hole in the wall spots with AMAZING food. Located in a shopping complex with an abundance of parking, this restaurant is one of my new favorites. The portions are plenty, the service is great and overall a great place to eat. I ordered the char kuey teow with chicken and the dish had an explosion of flavors with the chicken and noodles well seasoned. We also had the I believe the laksa which was really good and perfect for a cold day (or hot). Overall, this is one of my top to go places here in Katy.
Check, This, Place, Out!!!! It's very well reviewed for a reason. What I will say from the start is that their service is excellent. I had great interactions with the staff, and they kept a very friendly attitude toward guests. The owner of the store actually noticed that my friend and I were new customers and took the time to thank us for visiting his restaurant. It was definitely a touching moment for me, and he left us with some complimentary ice cream the end of our meals. The restaurant itself isn't large but has enough seating to host a couple of groups and has the option of bar seating as well. It's a comfortable atmosphere to relax and have a good meal at, so I would say it's a good place to eat outside of your home rather than taking the food to-go. The food itself was amazing! The grilled pork was my favorite of the two dishes we tried, it had great flavor and the meat itself was very tender and easy to work with. A very filling meal with the eggs and the greens on the side. The sweet and sour fish was also great in terms of flavor, the fish itself was tender and seasoned well. It had some crispy edges to it which I adored. The sweet and sour sauce was well balanced with a bunch of veggies to complement the fish and a side of rice to fill out the meal. This is a restaurant definitely worth your time, incredibly friendly and easy experience!
Let me start with the charm of this restaurant, as it can be easily missed behind the numerous fast food chains along Mason Rd. But somehow when you walk in you're immediately taken back in time to when our grandparents used to welcome us into their home for a home cooked meal. The owner and chef Uncle Chin engages with his guests and even brings out treats. I've heard he sometimes sings too. I think it's great practice to make customers feel at home and special!! The food is as advertised, I had the lunch special and it was amazing!! Tasty, fresh, and lots of flavor!! The roti was crisp and fluffy and paired well with the curry. I'll be back to try more!
Have you ever closed your eyes when you eat to really appreciate the flavors? This place definitely does that for me! Let me start by saying the service is top notch. When my wife and I entered, we were greeted by friendly faces and seated immediately. The waitress was really nice, she offered us iced cold water or room temperature. The ambiance here is cozy - nothing too fancy, but you can definitely tell the chef/owner put some thought into it. From the banana leaf covers on the ceiling fan to the pictures of the past, it feels like you walked into his home. What we ordered: Roti canai Combo skewers Char kuey teow The roti canai striked a perfect balance between flakey outside to the soft and chewy inside. It was a perfect vessel to the side of curry that included chicken and potatoes. It came with 2 pieces of roti and a bowl of curry. Perfect starter for 2 people. Next came combo of beef and chicken skewers. The charred aroma quickly makes my mouth water as the plate hits the table. The beef skewer was loaded with flavor and the spices used are visible throughout. Chicken was tender with a gentle smokey kiss from the grill. Chicken Char kuey teow came last. It was a perfect sharing portion for 2 hungry adults. Wok hay was prevalent and you can taste it upon the first bite. The noodles were soft and the chicken was juicy. We ordered mild but next time I plan to be more adventurous and get a hotter level. Overall, I'd make this a staple and go-to whenever I'm in the Katy, TX area.

This is a Katy TX GEM. Come for the food, stay for the atmosphere. The roti with curry chicken (appetizer) was absolutely delicious and was very authentic. I had the charred pork and Malaysian tea - the tea was delicious and is made with condensed & evaporated milk. After we ate, Uncle Chin came out and chatted with us and gave us a surprise performance on the karaoke installation. Our group danced together, gave performances of our own, and had a wonderful time. We chatted with him and shared a few jokes and stories, and once we paid he gave our group a bunch of popsicles on the house. I'll definitely be coming back soon. We visited Uncle Chin's Kitchen on our way back to Dallas. Hands down, this is the best meal we had on this trip! Here's my breakdown for the review: Food: 5/5. Roti canai is mind blowing- fluffy, crispy, buttery pastry .. now dip it in the creamy, savory chicken curry! Even the potato and chicken chunks had so much time bathing in that amazing curry that they just melt in your mouth. Roti Canai is a must!!!! Char Kuey Teow with chicken was on point. The seasoning, proportion of noodles to meat to bean sprouts were spot on. Sambal grilled fish was out of this world delicious!!!! The fish was so fresh and juicy, grilled on top of the banana leaf with that sauce One word to summarize their food: foodgasm! I used to love Banana Leaf and that was one of my places that Id visit every time I went to Houston. We did go to Banana Leaf for dinner last night and it didn't wow me at all. Uncle Chin's Kitchen definitely hit the spot for me and it'll be my must-eat Malaysian place from now on. Service: 5/5. Our server was very nice and helpful. The rest of the staff were friendly. The owner is super duper friendly- he came and made small talk with everyone. He even helped bring food out to each table. On top of this, he sang to us! He serenaded Holy Night and Unchained Melody to us while we were eating. I mean, that is going above and beyond! Uncle Chin has a great voice. Ambiance: 5/5. Came again today after they first opened and everything was as delicious as I remembered! Beef satay was so flavorful and soft and the Char Kuey Teow had the perfect wok hei. I also got to try the Malaysian Milk Tea for the first time which reminds me a lot of the traditional thai tea I had in Thailand. Wish the tea flavor was a bit stronger though. Since last time, Uncle Chin has recruited more help which is the sweetest server ever. She was so helpful in explaining the items and was very attentive to us despite the restaurant becoming more busy as time passed. read more
There's not many Malaysian food in the Houston area. If you like Malaysian food, this is a must try! This restaurant is a small hidden gem in the Katy area. As many mentioned, this is a mom and pop shop and I love it. The food quality is amazing and I see why people are giving it a 5 stars review! Food - Roti Canai, comes with a small curry chicken bowl. I really like it that it was flaky, and the Roti just melts in your mouth. Nasi Lemak also comes with a small bowl of curry chicken. The chicken falls off like butter, very good texture and good presentation. Hainanese Chicken, comes with 3 different sauces to dipped in. Caution: The portion for this meal is big! In conclusion, a very humble restaurant! I love seeing the smile on the Chefs face as he brings out the dishes. Enjoyed the meal, the service, the pricing and it was an amazing experience. Amazing service and food!!! The staff here was welcoming and nice. The restaurant and small but quaint. I've always wanted to try this place out but was never in the area to do so until last week. I passed by and decided to finally give it a try and I'm glad I did. Probably my top picks for Malay/Singaporean food.. I usually just go to Phat Eatery like a basic b but Uncle Chin will be on my list from now!! Got the char kway teow with shrimp and it was packed with flavors and protein. Really loved this dish and it was not too greasy nor too burnt. Just the right amount of flavoring Also got the beef satay skewers and they were so good. The peanut sauce was also great. Kinda expensive but the portions were reasonable. Can't wait to be back and try their roti/curry/laksa!! read more

Cozy mom-and-pop type of restaurant. Attentive staff, plenty of parking. Might be the best roti canai I've ever had, so much flavor in the dip and a very fluffy roti. Skewers are your typical yummy Malaysian skewers, the chicken is better than the beef. First time having roasted hainanese chicken, i prefer the normal style but this was really well seasoned and cooked with a crispy outside and juicy inside, reminds me of a little of a thanksgiving fried turkey. Malaysian cuisine is hard to come by in our hometown of San Antonio, Tx. So, on our way home from a weekend at the beach, we decided to give Uncle Chin's a try. We started off with the plain Roti Canal, the sauce had a nice spice and diverse flavor with a subtle hint of cinnamon. It was spicer than I anticipated but not too hot - just right. The Roti was flawless. Warm, flaky and soft. Perfect for tearing and dipping. My main meal was the seafood Malaysian Char Kuey Teow. I ordered it spicy and the spice was relatively low; I'd go extra spicy if you like a lot of heat. The flavor was bold and the seafood was cooked perfectly. Enough of a portion for two meals. The waitresses were attentive and prompt. The kept our drinks full and made great suggestions as to what to order. The place is very casual and rather quaint. Part of me doesn't want to post this because I want to keep this place for myself but at the same time, the owner deserves all the love and praise for creating such a delicious restaurant! Ever since traveling to Southeast Asia, we're always on the hunt for authentic Malaysian, Indonesian, Singaporean or anything similar in the US. Additionally, we've been on the road for 3 months visiting major (LA, SF, Seattle) and minor cities (southern Utah) so our taste buds have yet to experience that "wow, this place is damn delicious" feeling. Uncle Chin's Kitchen does that. We ordered roti canai (deliciously flaky and strong curry), char kway teow (if you don't know what wok hei is, you'll understand by this dish), Hainanese chicken rice (best chicken rice we've tasted in the US), grilled sambal fish (not the same as sambal stingray in Singapore because I don't think you can source it here but still delicious). This place was so good we got extra food to go even though we're heading to another foodie town (Austin). The owner was so lovely to speak to and it was a coincidence finding out we come from similar backgrounds. It is a very small shop so please be considerate when ordering or dining in. He speaks English, Cantonese, Mandarin and probably some part of Malay so please don't feel intimidated by any language barrier. I really enjoyed this place. I'm very unexperienced with Malaysian food and wanted to try the mee goreng. It wasn't on their menu today, but they still made it. It was spicy and sweet and I really enjoyed it. I felt their curry was a little too bitter for my tastes, but it had huge chunks of chicken in it. I think the small bowl of rice that went with the huge bowl of curry was unreasonable though (though 1.50 for another bowl is not crazy...I still would rather just have enough rice in the first place to match the amount of curry). Curry puff was good and freshly made, but it was more pastry puff than filling and unexpectedly sour. I'm not sure how I felt about that. Pork chop and milk tea was decent. The best thing imo was the roti, which was flaky, crispy, and soft all in one. Highly recommend it and regret not getting the egg roti. Overall a great place, with kind staff. read more

Wow! Amazing personable service!! Uncle Chins is a small authentic Malaysian restaurant. There is a bar/cashier on the left side, some artwork on the walls, and soft piano music playing. The waitress was so sweet. She explained the menu on the wall and what the best sellers were. I got the fried pork chop $12 and the hainanese chicken $15. The portions were just right. The fried pork chop had a nice crunch to it. It came with white rice, cucumbers, pineapple, and tomatoes. The hainanese chicken was what I expected. Tender and juicy. The chicken rice was fragrant and had a good flavor. However, it was a little too moist. Service 5/5 Ambiance 5/5 Food 4/5 If you're in the Katy area and want to try authentic Malaysian food. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted with a warm welcome and the waitress asked me if it was my first time visiting. Later I found out they have some regulars and she even remembered their usual order! My friends and I were seated and when I asked for recommendations, she gave a nice explanation of the more popular dishes in order of popularity, which were most on the menu haha! The owner (who is also the chef) came out to greet us as well! We ordered the Malaysian Curry Laksa, Curry Chicken, and Hainanese Chicken with rice! Each dish was around $15. Our unanimous favorite was the curry laksa but they were all delicious! The Hainanese chicken was very tender, flavorful, and juicy and the rice that came with it was so flavorful and the other coconut rice was so fluffy and soft! After we finished eating, the owner came out and asked if we wanted a chocolate ice cream popsicle which was so kind! I highly recommend coming to check out this place and experience what customer service should be like all the time and get some epic Malaysian food! read more

Lovely place with delicious food. My husband and I walked here tonight and got the #9 with seafood after the server recommended it. Even though my husband dislikes Asian noodle dishes he loved it. I loved it too even more than expected. The flavor was phenomenal even though I had to order it mild without being spicy since I'm pregnant. The chef and server were so considerate and the food came out hot and delicious very quickly. We took it home to eat and it was still warm and fresh - my picture isn't very good and doesn't do our meal justice. Looking forward to going back to try more dishes. read more

I actually came here during Thanksgiving because I had to travel to Houston, but I was starving and desperate to find a place still open. So happy that Uncle Chin's was available!! Got two different soups and they were so flavorful and filling, I had enough to take home to enjoy later. Service was very friendly and fast. read more
