Nut allergy friendly: There's a peanut sauce for the satay skewers, but I was fine with everything else. The employees are fluent in English so no problems in ordering! Time to Order: 20-45 minutes? We were in a group so maybe that's not accurate, but we also ordered a lot. Roti Canai (5/5): One of the best roti Canai I've ever had. The curry is thick with potato and super tender chicken and the roti canai bread is chewy but somehow still flaky and flavorful at the same time. It was so good that I ordered another one for myself to go to let my partner try it at home. Malaysian Chicken Satay (5/5): You will read "tender chicken" in my review several times. It's not a joke. The chicken nearly melts in your mouth. The last time I had meat this tender it was a filet mignon that was 6x the price of this dish. Char Kuey Tow (4.5/5) and Mee Goreng (4.5/5): Yeah we got both the flat noodle and the mee goreng. Because both are awesome. Noodles stayed chewy, beansprout and veggies were great, proteins were great. Not too saucy. Solid. Uncle Chen's Sizzling Tofu (4.5/5): We got this seafood style and it comes loaded with shrimp, calamari.. fantastic. Great by itself or on rice. The middle gets a little soggy if you let it sit too long, so chow down on this whole it's hot! Roasted Hainanese Chicken (4/5): Nothing against the dish itself, I just don't like all the bones. Yes, the chicken was beautifully tender. Chicken rice, also fantastic. Curry Chicken Puff (4.5/5): So this was way more filling than I expected. It's like an intense Asian empanada? Totally worth it. Comes out really hot. Lastly, we got a serenade from the man himself. Yes, he pulls out a mic and sings. It's his break from cooking during the dinner rush. So, you might indeed get dinner and a show! It's beautiful to see someone who enjoys what he's doing - and his voice is such that some people think it's a song over the intercom instead of live music, take that how you will :) TL;DR: Absolutely contends for Best in Katy. I came to Uncle Chin's because we were craving Malaysian/Singaporean food. It was a far drive for me, but I think it was worth it. We came 30 minutes after it was opened for the day, and there were already a couple parties ahead of us. We were quickly seated, and we were told in advance there was only one cook in the kitchen (Uncle Chin himself!) and that it could be a while before we get our food. We did not mind the wait, and it actually took about 20 minutes from the time we placed our order to when we got our food, so the wait was not bad at all. We ordered their Malaysian Satay. Sadly, there was no beef or combo available, and they only had chicken, but it was delicious! We also had their Laksha and their stir fried noodles. We ate everything. It was perfectly seasoned, very flavorful. There were many proteins in each of our dishes. There was plenty of parking, and despite there being only one person running the front, things went pretty smoothly. The ambiance is great for a casual date night or a family gathering. We'd been meaning to try this place for a long time and finally got around to it. It's a small, hole-in-the-wall mom and pop spot that feels really cozy, which I actually appreciated. It gives the place a very homey feel. The servers were all super friendly and attentive and the owner was also very kind and checked on us a few times. The food and drinks were all delicious, good portions, and prices were reasonable. Everything came out in a timely manner. The drinks took a little longer, but it wasn't a big deal. We also ordered a noodle dish that I forgot to take a picture of. One thing to note: I wouldn't recommend using the restroom if you can avoid it. My little one really had to go and it wasn't clean at all or well kept which was a bit of a downside especially with a kid. Two words: Absolutely spectacular! I hadn't eaten in a few days (long story) and I found myself in Katy on a Friday so I did a quick Yelp search and came upon this place. As I dug deeper, I read Jando's glowing review word-for-word and found myself salivating. Well, I ventured out to S. Mason for lunch, found the place easily, appreciated the ample and free parking, and walked in. I had read before that they used to be closed on Tuesdays and Saturdays, but now they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but open for dinner on Saturdays. (See my photos.) Anyhow, we walked in and found the place homey. Nothing fancy - just a nice, clean, homey Malaysian restaurant. Not too big, and not too small. We placed our order of roti canai, stir fried flat rice noodles, seafood sizzling tofu, and topped it off with a Malaysian milk tea. Oh my - we were satisfied and stuffed as a party of 2. We ended up boxing up almost 40% of the meal. The roti was near perfection - crispy, hot, flaky. The dipping sauce was perfectly seasoned with the right amount of heat. It included chunks of chicken and potato. You must absolutely order this one. I love me some stir fried flat rice noodles so we got that one with chicken. Overall, it was excellent. Portions were a tad smaller than I would like for the price. Also it could use a little bit of hot sauce so we asked for a side of sriracha which they gladly and quickly brought. The sizzling tofu - OMG so good. I can't even explain it. I just love it so much and the portions are huge. I'm not sure what the vegetable flavor would taste like but we tried the seafood one and have no regrets. Lastly the milk tea was just because we felt like splurging and it was also a great decision. The tea flavor itself is deep and the overall drink is very nice. We got it iced. And an honorable mention - we ran into Uncle Chin (at least we assume it was Uncle Chin) and told him his food was amazing. I think he really appreciated it. He seems like a super nice guy and I want his business to do really well. If that wasn't Uncle Chin then we talked to a random person and raved about the food... In spite of all the accolades and having garnered one of the highest ratings in the area, Uncle Chin's still feels slept on (#1) and is not on enough radars within the foodcentric community. Yet for those who have dined here, it's an experience like no other and arguably the best Malaysian option in greater Houston. Located on a busy stretch of Mason Road, it is entirely too easy to miss which means customers are here because they knew where to go. It is small, but quaint in every way. There are only 30 seats at best, with the series of counter seats, as well as small tables. The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming, making first timers and regulars all feel at home at the same time. The food stands out, not simply because it's a rare cuisine in the area, but because of how good it is. The curry chicken has an excellent flavor and it's full of chunks of bone in chicken potatoes and an egg. Both the chicken and beef satays are often tender and strangely addicting, as is their char kuey teow. I'd become fond of their roti canai, which is served with a fluffy yet flakey roti, and served with a flavorful mini bowl of curry. The laksa is also highly recommended, since the broth has an excellent creamy base of coconut milk and is fragrant with every slurp. While the beef rendang and bak kut teh are only available on weekends, it is most definitely worth seeking out. The roasted Hainanese chicken is a unique spin on the classic dish and when available, the kaya puffs are an excellent way to close out the meal. Franco, the owner is a kind and gentle soul. His passion for food and community oozes through every aspect of the business. Beyond the food, he is absolutely the star, enough to where many locals would come just to be served and serenaded (#2) by him. It truly is a dinner and a show. We used to like Uncle Chen before we left Texas, so after moving back, we decided to drive 50 minutes one way and had lunch there. There were about four other customers during a weekday lunch, which isn't bad, especially given the Katy location, which is a bit out of the way. There was only one server working the front--a woman who was very efficient and clearly ran things on a tight, almost military-like schedule. She handled everything well, but her demeanor felt too direct and can be off putting. She said it really loudly towards the kitchen that she prepared the rice. The food came out in about 15 minutes, which was longer than I expected. However, I understand why--Franco, the owner, appeared to be the only one cooking and prepping food. As for the food, the noodles were a bit too greasy for my taste. My husband enjoyed his curry, but it wasn't anything particularly memorable. Unfortunately, we both experienced some stomach discomfort afterward, possibly due to the greasiness. If you're looking to have a cozy and delicious meal, run here because this place serves one of the best Malaysian food I've ever had. The food is cooked by one chef from Sabah, Malaysia. Everything tasted SO GOOD. I came here for dinner and ordered their roti canai, chicken + beef skewers, and chicken char kuey teow. The roti was warm and fluffy. It went so perfectly with the bowl of curry, which was packed with so much flavor. The satay skewers were delicious as you can taste the amazing grilled flavor. The char kuey teow had a strong wok hay aroma which is chef's kiss in a noodle dish like this. This entire meal warmed my SOUL. The chef came out to ask how the food was. Uncle chins is a hole in the wall spots with AMAZING food. Located in a shopping complex with an abundance of parking, this restaurant is one of my new favorites. The portions are plenty, the service is great and overall a great place to eat. I ordered the char kuey teow with chicken and the dish had an explosion of flavors with the chicken and noodles well seasoned. I came across this resturant before I left Texas. I am so glad I made this stop, it was prob the best thing I ate during my short trip!! I was welcomed by the owner who was the sweetest. It's a small mom and pop shop and apparently the owner cooks everything himself! THATS AAMAZING. I heard it gets pretty packed Fridays and Sundays, so be aware of that. I came on a weekday lunch so it wasn't too crowded. Food: you can def tell it was made with love and details. Everything was so delicious. We got the combo B which came with the following: Beef skewers 8/10: so tender and juicy. I was kinda bummed out bc he ran out of chicken skewers that day but the beef was still really good and flavorful. The peanut sauce it came with really brought the dish together. Char Kuey teow 9/10: this dish is similar to the Chinese chow fun. But this Malaysian style noodle was WAY BETTER. it just had way more flavor than the typical chow funs I get at Chinese restaurants. It wasn't too oily and came with a good amount of meat. Roasted Hainanese chicken rice 10/10: wow my favorite dish I got. The chickens roast was so good especially the skin that was seasoned perfectly and had that nice crisp on the outside. This is a MUST GET. The rice was also garlic/ginger rice which is the best rice to get with this dish. The rice was so fragrant. I also got the Malaysian milk tea. Pro tip: don't get less sweet bc it's already pretty not sweet. I usually like my drinks 50% sweet but the milk tea is already like that. It was a unique drink but it didn't suit my taste that much since it was too strong of a flavor that it almost tasted coffee like (I don't like coffee). Check, This, Place, Out!!!! It's very well reviewed for a reason. What I will say from the start is that their service is excellent. I had great interactions with the staff, and they kept a very friendly attitude toward guests. The owner of the store actually noticed that my friend and I were new customers and took the time to thank us for visiting his restaurant. It was definitely a touching moment for me, and he left us with some complimentary ice cream the end of our meals. The restaurant itself isn't large but has enough seating to host a couple of groups and has the option of bar seating as well. It's a comfortable atmosphere to relax and have a good meal at, so I would say it's a good place to eat outside of your home rather than taking the food to-go. The food itself was amazing! The grilled pork was my favorite of the two dishes we tried, it had great flavor and the meat itself was very tender and easy to work with. A very filling meal with the eggs and the greens on the side. The sweet and sour fish was also great in terms of flavor, the fish itself was tender and seasoned well. It had some crispy edges to it which I adored. The sweet and sour sauce was well balanced with a bunch of veggies to complement the fish and a side of rice to fill out the meal. Let me start with the charm of this restaurant, as it can be easily missed behind the numerous fast food chains along Mason Rd. But somehow when you walk in you're immediately taken back in time to when our grandparents used to welcome us into their home for a home cooked meal. When my wife and I entered, we were greeted by friendly faces and seated immediately. The waitress was really nice, she offered us iced cold water or room temperature. It was a perfect vessel to the side of curry that included chicken and potatoes. It came with 2 pieces of roti and a bowl of curry. Perfect starter for 2 people. Next came combo of beef and chicken skewers. The charred aroma quickly makes my mouth water as the plate hits the table. The beef skewer was loaded with flavor and the spices used are visible throughout. Chicken was tender with a gentle smokey kiss from the grill. Chicken Char kuey teow came last. It was a perfect sharing portion for 2 hungry adults. Wok hay was prevalent and you can taste it upon the first bite. The noodles were soft and the chicken was juicy. Curry chicken was really tasty. They didn't ask spice level when I ordered, but it had a hint of spiciness which was perfect. It was lunch time. The customers were coming in like a revolving door. We got the last table & then there was up to an hour wait. The server explained that the chef cooks every dish himself like a home cook meal so you should expect a wait especially if they are crowded. The 4 homemade sauces that come with the roasted chicken were quite good. Dont recall the names but the one like a garlic chimichuri was my favorite followed by an orange sauce. The 3rd sauce was a more traditional soy sauce based sauce. There is definitely a wait for the food if you come during peak hour. By the time we left the people coming in got their food pretty quickly. Uncle Chin's is close to my house and has always had great ratings. It's hidden behind the Sonic in a strip mall. Yes, it is a very small place, so get there early for lunch on a Sunday. We saw some folks turn around and go somewhere else because there was sent any room. My wife and I had the chicken satay skewers to start. The meat was marinated perfectly. Awesome peanut sauce for dipping. We had the stir-fry flat noodles. I had seafood while my wife had chicken. Both dishes were incredible. We ordered an egg roti canai for my daughter and she enjoyed it. I ate the chicken curry a day or two later and it was very good. Service was good, recommendations were given and the food arrived fairly quickly. I want to return and have some more curry and try the hainenese chicken. Uncle Chin's has very quickly become one of our favorite restaurants in Katy. The food and service here are consistently great. We have tried several dishes on the menu, but my favorites are the roti canai, chicken satay, char kuey teow (stir-fry flat noodles), and chicken curry. As a dessert, I would highly recommend the cendol drink, which is sweet and refreshing and a great way to end the meal. The atmosphere is that of a small family-owned restaurant, making it a cozy and inviting environment to dine in. On one of our visits, we even got to see a great live singing performance from the chef. We will definitely be back again soon! read more

My first visit to Uncle Chin's Kitchen was very much worth the very long wait to receive my food. My mistake was to arrive at lunchtime and seated at the very last table available. The restaurant is very small with only eight tables with four chairs each. The singular host was also the cashier and busted the tables. She managed the roles effortlessly and gave us a great explanation of how the chef prepared each meal and that the time from order to delivery could be drawn out. The Roasted Hainanese Chicken and Rice was just damn good! I was also able to sample my guest's Curry Chicken and absolutely loved it. Came here with two friends on Black Friday 30 minutes after opening. Glad we did because by an hour after opening, the place filled up! The staff are really nice here and checked on us frequently. If I could sum up my impression of the food and drink in one word, I would say it tastes lighter than expected. For example, the Malaysian and Thai iced teas were both way less sweet than I've had elsewhere. Additionally, their noodles were on the more bland side. I wouldn't get them again, but I would get the teas because I don't like super sweet drinks. If you're looking for a lot of flavor, I would go with the chicken satay and roti canai. We ordered the combo B, but got a plate of only chicken satay instead of chicken and beef. No complaints though, since the chicken was amazing. The noodles were also supposed to be medium spice level, but I think they forgot that entirely because we couldn't taste any spice. The combo also came with roasted hainanese chicken with rice. What a gem! We (unknowingly) walked in 15 min before close and got to catch Uncle Chin himself deliver a Josh Groban song. I was so tickled to watch his performance! I didn't realize it was his encore performance for the night as they were likely ready to close, and I immediately felt bad and told the waitress we could leave and not hold up closing. But the waitress was adamant that we stay and eat so we agreed since we were pretty hungry and looking for a good meal. We were not disappointed! The Malaysian sizzling tofu (5/5) was so good. The picture looked like it would be reminiscent of the one from Banana Leaf but it was not. It was better! The fried outer shell was different and held up better with the sauce over time and the tofu itself was still nice and soft. I also ordered the sweet and sour pork (3/5) just because I was curious. These are the little pork chunks (no bone). Nothing wrong with the dish but I'm very picky about the type of sweet and sour pork that I like, and this was not my preference. We tried the beef satay skewers (5/5) and they were tender, moist, and flavorful. Great appetizer. Also tried the flat noodle (4/5)and it was well cooked and seasoned although clearly not my favorite of the night. For drinks, I had the plum drink (5/5) and it was good. Service was fantastic (5+/5). Uncle Chin and the waitress came by multiple times to check on us and even followed us out after we were done to make sure we got some coffee candy to go! Food is great. I have noticed kitchen help went into restroom with the apron on , that is nasty . Employees need to remove aprons before go into restroom , hope they are in the habit of washing their hands . Uncle got to clean up this thing , he is there every day all day . "the mandatory 20% is very steep." I love myself some Malaysian food and this spot is as close as I can ever imagine to it. I brought my family here for a Mother's day dinner as I figured this place wouldn't be too crowded for the holiday since its off the beaten path. Glad we came here as they opened at 5 pm and there only 2 tables when we got in. Ambience screams "mom and pop shop" which reminds me of my own family who was also in the business. So needless to say, its nothing fancy, but nice items on the walls as decor. We tried to order their chicken but the owners told us they can't do it because its not prepped yet. I kinda rolled my eyes but ordered their other items such as chicken curry, and rotis, noodles, veggies, nasi lemak . Every dish was piping hot and not too spicy. Everything was great and awesome until the bill came and I noticed a "20% service charge" with the option of adding more tip. First, I don't care to tip more than 15% and I'll consider 18% if things are better than great, but the mandatory 20% is very steep. I understand I had a 8 person table, but serving a 8 person table is the same thing as you would do for a 2 person table. At this point this has become a money grab and ways to take more money out of your pocket. Don't think I'll be coming back in the forseeable future. The staff, all of them, are extremely friendly, helpful, efficient, and knowledgeable of the menu items. Daisy is my favorite though! She's lively and keeps the energy at an upbeat tempo. The food is absolutely delicious, I've tried several items and have loved them all. The portions are large and in my opinion, large enough to split between 2-3 people. Uncle Chin's restaurant sits 40 people in total. The walls are filled with Malaysia sceneries and I spotted a Singapore flag. The menu is simple and has most iconic Malaysian dishes. I definitely had to try the nasi lemak with curry chicken, and the roasted Hainanese chicken rice. The nasi lemak rice did not have a strong coconut flavor and the rice was too wet. The ikan bilis and peanuts weren't fried to perfection and weren't fragrant. However, the curry was good and had a good spice level. The roasted Hainanese chicken was juicy and good. The main sauce was spicy and garlicky. Yum. I love satay and had a combo plate. Each satay stick was big but the meat flavor wasn't strong. The peanut sauce that accompanied it was lacking in flavor too. The sizzling tofu with seafood was my least favorite dish. The sauce was oily, and the taste was weird. Though the price difference of seafood and veggie sauce is $1, save the dollar because the seafood sauce wasn't worth it. As someone whose family is from Singapore and Malaysia, this cuisine is one of my favorites and there aren't too many places where you can find it. We were able to visit Uncle Chin's this weekend and were very happy! They're closed on Saturdays, which is a bummer - it's because they prep Bak kut teh, which is only served on Sundays. We arrived at 2pm on Sunday, and were surprised to a full restaurant- there are only 10 or so tables and some bar seating, so it's a pretty small area. We added our name to a waitlist and were seated within 15 minutes. Expect a no-frills place, with great food and friendly service. We had an iced teh tarik (iced milk tea), which was great. And then got the roti canai, char kway teow, and grilled sambal fish. Roti canai was incredible- such perfectly flaky bread, and curry packed a good kick too. The noodles and fish were great too. It took a bit longer to get the fish to us - we were nearly done with everything else when it came out. So heads up there, but still tasty and it came out sizzling on a hot plate. My friend chose this place after experiencing a yelp event. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. We had lunch on a Friday and enjoyed a package deal. It included two appetizers and a meal. First visit to Uncle Chen's and, by God, it won't be the last! We got the "A" platter and everything was delicious. The servers were friendly, informative and efficient. The roti canai was authentically flavored with rich chicken curry sauce and potato. The satay with peanut sauce made my wife wide-eyed with belief. The hainanese chicken was crispy and roasted to perfection. The three sauces were all excellent additions to the flavor and all were clearly explained by the chef who brought them to our table. We will be returning to try everything else on the menu, but I can't wait to get more of what we just had. Highly recommended! read more

We reserved for a large group and pre-ordered dishes for family style dining. The service was absolutely the best! They set the tables nicely and appetizers came out immediately upon arrival. The roti and curry dip was very tasty. Hainan Chicken & Roasted Hainan Chicken with super flavor rice is excellent! The roasted version was light and crispy. The noodle dishes and sweet & sour fish were good, too. Another favorite was the lightly fried and spicy Tofu, beautiful texture! The staff kept us in stitches; they were so attentive and friendly. If you're lucky enough to hear him, the chef is an amazing singer! It was like a dinner and a show! We made such wonderful memories that night & laughed till our cheeks hurt, it was the best! Why 5 stars? Because I just kept eating despite my hunger being satisfied long ago. --- --- --- I was long overdue to meet with up with local celebrity, Jando S to share a meal and stories about life. I sent him 11 places at the top of my "To Try" list and he said Uncle Chin's would be the best of the bunch. While I still haven't tried the other 10, it's hard to imagine he was wrong about that because Uncle Chin's was pretty much as good as it gets. I fully trusted Jando to order everything, not only because he'd been here before, but because he is in the top .00001% of people that I believe in when it comes to food selection. Here's what he selected (and I gobbled up): Roti Canai: 5-stars. In fairness to other restaurants, I've never had roti canai that I didn't love. Uncle Chin's version also delivered. This was the only thing we had with any kind of a kick to it, but if I can handle the kick, so can you. Malaysian Combo Satay: 5-stars. In a meal of awesome things, this might have been the most awesome. The meat was so tender and amazingly flavorful. I would say this was the best satay I've ever had. Hainanese Chicken and Rice: 3.5 stars. From my favorite item, to the only thing I didn't love. The first couple of pieces had so much bone that it was a lot like a crab leg: a lot of work for very little pay off. Jando gave me a couple other bites that consisted of much more meat than bone. I enjoyed the flavor, and thought the rice was great, but I probably wouldn't order this a second time. Stir-Fry Flat Noodles with Chicken: 5-stars. This came out steaming, but I was too excited and had to take a couple bites. To be honest, it was too hot to judge, but my initial reaction was that it tasted a little bland. However, that was probably just because I burned my taste buds off trying to eat food that was too hot. Once it settled a bit, I absolutely loved these noodles. I had already eaten more than my normal daily caloric count in one sitting, but I gobbled up every last inch of this dish with no regrets. Malaysian Grilled Pork: 5-stars. I didn't even realize this was pork. It looked and tasted like a churrasco. Just like the stir fry noodles, about halfway through eating, I hit my wall, but I had no desire to stop until the plate was empty. Uncle Chin's 4.8 star rating and spot as one of the highest rated restaurants in all of Houston is well-deserved. If I lived any closer to Katy, this would absolutely be one of my go-to spots! read more

A must-try, hidden gem in Katy. From the menu, I tried: Malaysian Roti Canai Chicken Char Kuey Teow (stir-fry flat noodles) Roasted Hainanese Chicken & Rice I'm pretty new to Malaysian cuisine, but all three dishes were amazing, and are highly recommended. Service was friendly, and his suggestions were spot on. The owner or manager even came out to greet us to see how we liked the food. I always appreciate that! Ambience is good, I've never been to Malaysia, but there were displays of the flag, pictures of the country, and they even had a picture frame with their coin currency on display. My family decided to try Uncle Chin last minute for lunch. When we got there the whole restaurant was packed already. We had a group of 9 and they mainly only had tables of 4, they made room for us by combining two tables. They seem to be short handed so there was understandably going to be a long wait for the food. There is a single waitress who is a sweet lady who is the only person working FOH. There is also a single cook in the back. We mainly got their lunch hour specials so I'm not sure I actually got a real taste of their menu. Every special comes with a free soda/iced tea. From the happy hour we got the new goreng, sweet and sour chicken, and roasted Haines chicken rice. My mom got the nasi lemak from their traditional menu to try. I only tried the nasi lemak. It had peanuts fire anchovies, hard boiled eggs, and a side of curry. I thought the roasted hainanese chicken that came with it was just ok. It was a little dry and didn't have as much flavor as I would've liked. I prefer the regular way that hainanese chicken is cooked. I do like the crunchiness from the provided peanuts, fried anchovies, and cucumbers though. The curry they give you on the side was SPICYYY, even my mom who had a high spice tolerance thought it was really spicy. I will probably come back again and try their actual dishes in the future if I have the chance. read more

This is my parents favorite spot and mytook me while I'm visiting them. I've had Malaysian food before back in LA and it was delicious. So far through my experience, the Asian food scene in Houston has not been able to be compared to LA. However, this place did! And it was in fact, better!! Upon walking in, we were greeted by a lovely lady who was super friendly. We sat down and ordered a cendol drink, hainanese chicken, and kuey teow. Everything was delicious. Everything also came out in a timely manner. When I went, they were very understaffed with only the only in the back cooking. However, despite that, the food and everything was still impressive.
