In spite of all the accolades and having garnered one of the highest ratings in the area, Uncle Chin's still feels slept on (#1) and is not on enough radars within the foodcentric community. Yet for those who have dined here, it's an experience like no other and arguably the best Malaysian option in greater Houston. Located on a busy stretch of Mason Road, it is entirely too easy to miss which means customers are here because they knew where to go. It is small, but quaint in every way. There are only 30 seats at best, with the series of counter seats, as well as small tables. The staff is incredibly kind and welcoming, making first timers and regulars all feel at home at the same time. The food stands out, not simply because it's a rare cuisine in the area, but because of how good it is. The curry chicken has an excellent flavor and it's full of chunks of bone in chicken potatoes and an egg. Both the chicken and beef satays are often tender and strangely addicting, as is their char kuey teow. I'd become fond of their roti canai, which is served with a fluffy yet flakey roti, and served with a flavorful mini bowl of curry. The laksa is also highly recommended, since the broth has an excellent creamy base of coconut milk and is fragrant with every slurp. While the beef rendang and bak kut teh are only available on weekends, it is most definitely worth seeking out. The roasted Hainanese chicken is a unique spin on the classic dish and when available, the kaya puffs are an excellent way to close out the meal. Franco, the owner is a kind and gentle soul. His passion for food and community oozes through every aspect of the business. Beyond the food, he is absolutely the star, enough to where many locals would come just to be served and serenaded (#2) by him. It truly is a dinner and a show. I dedicate review #5300 to this Katy gem, which has become a destination and one of my favorite businesses in the entire area. __________ (#1) For the uninitiated: Relatively unknown. We used to like Uncle Chen before we left Texas, so after moving back, we decided to drive 50 minutes one way and had lunch there. There were about four other customers during a weekday lunch, which isn't bad, especially given the Katy location, which is a bit out of the way. There was only one server working the front--a woman who was very efficient and clearly ran things on a tight, almost military-like schedule. She handled everything well, but her demeanor felt too direct and can be off putting. She said it really loudly towards the kitchen that she prepared the rice. The food came out in about 15 minutes, which was longer than I expected. However, I understand why--Franco, the owner, appeared to be the only one cooking and prepping food. As for the food, the noodles were a bit too greasy for my taste. My husband enjoyed his curry, but it wasn't anything particularly memorable. Unfortunately, we both experienced some stomach discomfort afterward, possibly due to the greasiness. Overall, we're glad we gave it another try, but this visit didn't quite live up to our previous experiences.
If you're looking to have a cozy and delicious meal, run here because this place serves one of the best Malaysian food I've ever had. The food is cooked by one chef from Sabah, Malaysia. Everything tasted SO GOOD. I came here for dinner and ordered their roti canai, chicken + beef skewers, and chicken char kuey teow. The roti was warm and fluffy. It went so perfectly with the bowl of curry, which was packed with so much flavor. The satay skewers were delicious as you can taste the amazing grilled flavor. The char kuey teow had a strong wok hay aroma which is chef's kiss in a noodle dish like this. This entire meal warmed my SOUL. The chef came out to ask how the food was. He was friendly and so is everyone working at the restaurant. Be patient with the restaurant since they are a small family run establishment, but it's so worth the wait. I will be back here to try the other items on their menu! There is sufficient parking by the restaurant. It's located in a seemingly busy street, near a Sonic.
Uncle chins is a hole in the wall spots with AMAZING food. Located in a shopping complex with an abundance of parking, this restaurant is one of my new favorites. The portions are plenty, the service is great and overall a great place to eat. I ordered the char kuey teow with chicken and the dish had an explosion of flavors with the chicken and noodles well seasoned. We also had the I believe the laksa which was really good and perfect for a cold day (or hot). Overall, this is one of my top to go places here in Katy.
I came across this resturant before I left Texas. I am so glad I made this stop, it was prob the best thing I ate during my short trip!! I was welcomed by the owner who was the sweetest. It's a small mom and pop shop and apparently the owner cooks everything himself! THATS AAMAZING. I heard it gets pretty packed Fridays and Sundays, so be aware of that. I came on a weekday lunch so it wasn't too crowded. Food: you can def tell it was made with love and details. Everything was so delicious. We got the combo B which came with the following: Beef skewers 8/10: so tender and juicy. I was kinda bummed out bc he ran out of chicken skewers that day but the beef was still really good and flavorful. The peanut sauce it came with really brought the dish together. Char Kuey teow 9/10: this dish is similar to the Chinese chow fun. But this Malaysian style noodle was WAY BETTER. it just had way more flavor than the typical chow funs I get at Chinese restaurants. It wasn't too oily and came with a good amount of meat. Roasted Hainanese chicken rice 10/10: wow my favorite dish I got. The chickens roast was so good especially the skin that was seasoned perfectly and had that nice crisp on the outside. This is a MUST GET. The rice was also garlic/ginger rice which is the best rice to get with this dish. The rice was so fragrant. I also got the Malaysian milk tea. Pro tip: don't get less sweet bc it's already pretty not sweet. I usually like my drinks 50% sweet but the milk tea is already like that. It was a unique drink but it didn't suit my taste that much since it was too strong of a flavor that it almost tasted coffee like (I don't like coffee). The server who made our drink was so nice and explained how he made the drinks. Overall service and food were amazing and I would so come back if I was in town. PLS CHECK THEM Out!
Check, This, Place, Out!!!! It's very well reviewed for a reason. What I will say from the start is that their service is excellent. I had great interactions with the staff, and they kept a very friendly attitude toward guests. The owner of the store actually noticed that my friend and I were new customers and took the time to thank us for visiting his restaurant. It was definitely a touching moment for me, and he left us with some complimentary ice cream the end of our meals. The restaurant itself isn't large but has enough seating to host a couple of groups and has the option of bar seating as well. It's a comfortable atmosphere to relax and have a good meal at, so I would say it's a good place to eat outside of your home rather than taking the food to-go. The food itself was amazing! The grilled pork was my favorite of the two dishes we tried, it had great flavor and the meat itself was very tender and easy to work with. A very filling meal with the eggs and the greens on the side. The sweet and sour fish was also great in terms of flavor, the fish itself was tender and seasoned well. It had some crispy edges to it which I adored. The sweet and sour sauce was well balanced with a bunch of veggies to complement the fish and a side of rice to fill out the meal. This is a restaurant definitely worth your time, incredibly friendly and easy experience!
Have you ever closed your eyes when you eat to really appreciate the flavors? This place definitely does that for me! Let me start by saying the service is top notch. When my wife and I entered, we were greeted by friendly faces and seated immediately. The waitress was really nice, she offered us iced cold water or room temperature. The ambiance here is cozy - nothing too fancy, but you can definitely tell the chef/owner put some thought into it. From the banana leaf covers on the ceiling fan to the pictures of the past, it feels like you walked into his home. What we ordered: Roti canai Combo skewers Char kuey teow The roti canai striked a perfect balance between flakey outside to the soft and chewy inside. It was a perfect vessel to the side of curry that included chicken and potatoes. It came with 2 pieces of roti and a bowl of curry. Perfect starter for 2 people. Next came combo of beef and chicken skewers. The charred aroma quickly makes my mouth water as the plate hits the table. The beef skewer was loaded with flavor and the spices used are visible throughout. Chicken was tender with a gentle smokey kiss from the grill. Chicken Char kuey teow came last. It was a perfect sharing portion for 2 hungry adults. Wok hay was prevalent and you can taste it upon the first bite. The noodles were soft and the chicken was juicy. We ordered mild but next time I plan to be more adventurous and get a hotter level. Overall, I'd make this a staple and go-to whenever I'm in the Katy, TX area.
Let me start with the charm of this restaurant, as it can be easily missed behind the numerous fast food chains along Mason Rd. But somehow when you walk in you're immediately taken back in time to when our grandparents used to welcome us into their home for a home cooked meal. The owner and chef Uncle Chin engages with his guests and even brings out treats. I've heard he sometimes sings too. I think it's great practice to make customers feel at home and special!! The food is as advertised, I had the lunch special and it was amazing!! Tasty, fresh, and lots of flavor!! The roti was crisp and fluffy and paired well with the curry. I'll be back to try more!
Curry chicken was really tasty. They didn't ask spice level when I ordered, but it had a hint of spiciness which was perfect. It was lunch time. The customers were coming in like a revolving door. We got the last table & then there was up to an hour wait. The server explained that the chef cooks every dish himself like a home cook meal so you should expect a wait especially if they are crowded. The 4 homemade sauces that come with the roasted chicken were quite good. Dont recall the names but the one like a garlic chimichuri was my favorite followed by an orange sauce. The 3rd sauce was a more traditional soy sauce based sauce. There is definitely a wait for the food if you come during peak hour. By the time we left the people coming in got their food pretty quickly. They have a nice waitlist system where you leave your name & phone number and they call you about 5 min before your table is ready. I recommend you check them out!
Good place to get singaporean/malaysian food in Katy. Very very homey feel which is one of my favorite things about this resturant. We got the hainanese chicken and flat noodle and again were all unique flavors, very authentic and homey feel, felt like i was at my grandpa's house. Good prices for a good amount of food, I'd come back!
First of all, love this family business! There's so much heart poured out in this place. The owner even sang for us! The food is delicious. Made fresh to order. The hainanese chicken rice is good, could use more flavor though. The curry chicken was delicious - my bowl was lacking chicken though. The mee goreng noodles were really salty. Favorite dish was the curry and roti. Same curry as the curry chicken with flaky roti. Lunch special is such a good deal.
Uncle Chin's is close to my house and has always had great ratings. It's hidden behind the Sonic in a strip mall. Yes, it is a very small place, so get there early for lunch on a Sunday. We saw some folks turn around and go somewhere else because there was sent any room. My wife and I had the chicken satay skewers to start. The meat was marinated perfectly. Awesome peanut sauce for dipping. We had the stir-fry flat noodles. I had seafood while my wife had chicken. Both dishes were incredible. We ordered an egg roti canai for my daughter and she enjoyed it. I ate the chicken curry a day or two later and it was very good. Service was good, recommendations were given and the food arrived fairly quickly. I want to return and have some more curry and try the hainenese chicken. Great food, I wish we would have come here sooner.

I had been there for a private event earlier in the week. I happened to be in Katy working, so I decided to get an iced milk tea to go. It's delicious. While my intention was just to get the tea, I also ordered char kuey teow with tofu to have for dinner. Uncle Chin brought me the piping hot noodles. He's so nice. He offered me a popsicle, but I declined because I was drinking the tea. Since I declined the popsicle, he gave me a chocolate instead. I had a little bit of the noodles when I got home. They're good, and the serving was generous. I asked the waiter why they close on Saturdays. Apparently, Franco, the chef/owner, goes to market to purchase items served only on Sundays. Going to uncle chin's is like coming home from college to mom and dad's home cooked meals...it just hits the spot! They serve authentic Malaysian food with family style vibes. If you're lucky, uncle chin himself will come out from the kitchen in between cooking meals and set the ambiance with his beautiful singing. At the end of your meal, he'll come out and ask how your meal was and even ask your kids if they'd like an ice cream on the house. Overall, left with a smile on our faces and happy full bellies. KATY, TX 77450 / MALAYSIAN, SINGAPOREAN / 04-05-23 / DINNER +The homemade sauces were good. +The nasi lemak was amazing. +The chicken satay was marinated and cooked well. -Customer service was okay. Polly was friendly, but a little scattered. There were only 2 tables during the dinner rush and she was too busy showing a random passerby how to sign up for online ordering versus attending to the 2 tables (ours and a nice Asian couple). -Execution could definitely use some major improvement. Our entrees came out way too far apart from one another, the last (noodle soup) being served nearly 15 minutes after the first entree (nasi lemak). We had 3 of 5 dishes served, but no utensils to eat with. -The yee mi noodle soup's noodles were over-cooked and soggy. -The Hainanese chicken was cold, which I am not used to. -The Hainanese rice was dry and tasted a little old. -We found a long strand of wavy black hair on the noodle soup plate. -The restaurant could use some cleaning, as the dust bunnies were colonizing the shelves and counters. Overall, the restaurant is cozy and the owner/chef is really nice, but execution was a bit flawed. A laid back, clean restaurant that is family owned. Friendly staffs and whom-I-assumed, their son, is an engineer student. Menu is simple but a good variety. Basically you sit anywhere, look at their menu on their wall or use the QR scan to view their menu on your phone. When you're ready, their son or whomever will take your order and bring it out. When you're done eating, you pay at the register. Simple. Their roti was okay. It's definitely missing something but I cannot put my finger on it. Chicken skewers are a must. Flavored correctly and cooked to perfection. You need to give it a try! 6 delicious chicken skewers for $13 is not bad. Homemade peanut sauce is pretty good as well and I love that they added some cucumbers and red onions on the side. Chicken flat noodles is one of my favorite Malaysian flat noodles I have ever had! We got medium spice and it was perfect. Enough spice to satisfy me but not crazy spicy where you cannot feel your tongue. Just perfectly cooked. Plus, it's not oily! Overall, I will definitely come back to try other food or a quick order-to-go. Plus, supporting a local mom& pop's business is my jam. Prices are reasonable for the area. Plenty of parking. Finally made our way out to try Uncle Chin's and we are so happy to do so! The location is tucked away in a little strip with lots of parking spots. The restaurant is very unassuming but has lots of charm reminiscent of mom&pop shops I've visited in Asia. I really like the leaves added to the fan spinning above that reminds me of SEA. We were greeted by very kind and eager wait staff who gave their honest recs which we were happy to take! I really enjoyed the dishes below: Beef skewers: super flavorful and tender on their own, the peanut? Sauce added just elevates the dish. It's a great snack but was honestly pretty filling, I could have been full with just this dish. Roti canai: there's a good little kick with the sauce that pairs well with the potato and chicken. The roti was flaky and so delightful Tofu stir fry noodle: we had the option to make it spicy and I kinda wish we did because I think that would have made the dish even better but it's also just really delicious as is. There's a delicious smokiness in the thick sauce that coats everything and it's just a great filling dish. I also think the dish is a great comfort meal that I'll think back to often. Unpictured: the Malay ice milk tea was so delicious! Strong tea flavor, a little on the sweet side but I found it enjoyable. Malaysian Chicken Satay (6 skewers) was so good. We only have sticks left. You should try their Hainanese Chicken and Rice and Malaysian Grilled pork! Everything was so juicy and tender! The food here is bursting with flavor. We've tried other Malaysian restaurants, but this is by far the best. The hainanese chicken is tender, perfectly marinated and seasoned, and generous portion. The stir fry noodles are savory, robust with complex flavors, and satisfies the carb craving. The roast chicken was slighty crispy and rich in taste. Roti was perfectly flakey, crispy, buttery. So good. The service was superb. We came in around 730 and was greeted by uncle chin himself and a waiter. Uncle chin is very friendly and hospitable. He gave excellent recommendations, and when we debated between the regular and roast chicken, (we decided on regular) he gave us the roasted chicken on the house to try! He shared with us his story and how he reverse engineered his recipes. Waitstaff was attentive, patient, and friendly. It's an intimate space, very clean and comfortable. It's a little hidden on Mason shopping center. Be careful with days! They are not open Tuesdays or Saturdays , and we've tried to go twice both on Saturday! We will be lifelong customers. Went on a weekday to grab some dinner, and I was surprised it was pretty empty. Luckily, more customers trickled in because this place was amazing! Service was great; very warm and friendly vibes! Roti canai was very spicy, but it was so good. The chicken satay, roasted Hainanese chicken + rice, and sizzling tofu were delicious. The stir fry flat noodle with chicken is worth trying once. Overall great experience and we'll be back to try other food items! read more

The service is great, and the owners try to make conversation and make sure you are having a good time. It has a rather homely atmosphere and you feel like you have come to a relative's home because the owners gave me free sambal to try, they kept checking on me, and gave me tips on how to better enjoy my food. They also made and served the tea tableside. As for the food, it was delicious. The roasted Hainanese chicken with the rice and the sauces was a winner for me. Also, it is quite a lot of food for the price. Definitely try the tea here because it is authentic and packed with flavor. Worth it! read more

Coming from a Singaporean, I can tell you that the milk tea here is legit!! This is the only place in the United States that makes their Singapore/malaysian tea that tastes like the one back home! The food here, especially the chili, is delicious, and portions are really good! If you're interested in trying Singapore/malaysian food, don't sleep on this place!! read more
Haven't been back here since the phenomenal yelp event I attended earlier this year but so glad I was able to stop by for lunch this afternoon. I wish I got the name of the lady working this afternoon but she was great! She appeared to be the main one working as she was pretty busy but she did a phenomenal job of attending to everyone and keeping us updated. We chatted a little bit as well and she just had phenomenal energy! We were also assisted by the owner I believe which is always a pleasure as he, too was great to us! He served us, checked in on us and gave us an awesome little treat when we left. I brought my friend and together we shared a combo which consisted of the roti and curry, the skewers and the chicken with the aromatic rice. Everything was just as delicious as I remembered it!! I just loveeeeew the curry! And the peanut sauce that comes with the skewers is literally chefs kiss! I hope I'm able to try the beef rendeng again one Day but for now I am very much pleased with what I was able to try today and will absolutely be back! A small ma and pa restaurant. The roti was nice and crispy but it the curry tasted a little different than what I was expecting. The sizzling seafood tofu is definitely my favorite. So much flavor packed into the dish! The mixed satay meats were nice a tender and the sauce complimented the satay seasoning on it. Kind of like a little sweet and savory taste going on. Everything else was just what you'd expected. Not bad but good and comforting to eat. Would definitely come back. read more

This is a Katy TX GEM. Come for the food, stay for the atmosphere. The roti with curry chicken (appetizer) was absolutely delicious and was very authentic. I had the charred pork and Malaysian tea - the tea was delicious and is made with condensed & evaporated milk. After we ate, Uncle Chin came out and chatted with us and gave us a surprise performance on the karaoke installation. Our group danced together, gave performances of our own, and had a wonderful time. We chatted with him and shared a few jokes and stories, and once we paid he gave our group a bunch of popsicles on the house. I'll definitely be coming back soon. This doesn't feel like a restaurant; it feels like home. read more

We visited Uncle Chin's Kitchen on our way back to Dallas. Hands down, this is the best meal we had on this trip! Here's my breakdown for the review: Food: 5/5. Roti canai is mind blowing- fluffy, crispy, buttery pastry .. now dip it in the creamy, savory chicken curry! Even the potato and chicken chunks had so much time bathing in that amazing curry that they just melt in your mouth. Roti Canai is a must!!!! Char Kuey Teow with chicken was on point. The seasoning, proportion of noodles to meat to bean sprouts were spot on. Sambal grilled fish was out of this world delicious!!!! The fish was so fresh and juicy, grilled on top of the banana leaf with that sauce One word to summarize their food: foodgasm! I used to love Banana Leaf and that was one of my places that Id visit every time I went to Houston. We did go to Banana Leaf for dinner last night and it didn't wow me at all. Uncle Chin's Kitchen definitely hit the spot for me and it'll be my must-eat Malaysian place from now on. Service: 5/5. Our server was very nice and helpful. The rest of the staff were friendly. The owner is super duper friendly- he came and made small talk with everyone. He even helped bring food out to each table. On top of this, he sang to us! He serenaded Holy Night and Unchained Melody to us while we were eating. I mean, that is going above and beyond! Uncle Chin has a great voice. Ambiance: 5/5. It's a small, family run restaurant that is clean. A few tables and then there's a small bar with some seats. We will definitely come back when we're in town. Small corner shop hiding behind a Sonic in Katy serves big flavor! Uncle Chin's is definitely family owned and I couldn't wait to try out their restaurant due to all the excellent reviews! The reviews do not lie for this Malaysian restaurant. It is spot on! Roti Canai was excellent the bread was flakey and flavorful. The curry, excellent cream texture, taste was perfection. Fried pork chop was tender and had a small kick of spice. Loved it! Curry chicken - great portion, curry as mentioned earlier was great and over rice you can't beat it! Malaysian Milk Tea - definitely a great dessert drink the tea leaves used were unique and not like anything you can get at any typical milk tea shop. Will be back!! read more

This place can be easily missed if you're not looking. It's hidden behind a building from street view. Truly a little hidden gem. You wouldn't know it's a Malaysian restaurant either. Upon waking in, you'll notice it's a little quaint family restaurant. The menu are on the wall with limited selections. There is one server and he was nice and attentive. Their specialty is the hainese chicken. I opt for that. Food came out quick and fresh. The roti curry was delicious and so was the flat rice noodle. I don't have any complaints. Pricing and quality is good and food is authentic. The chef even came out to ask how the food was as they're still relatively new and wanted feedback. After we paid and as we were leaving the chef offered us complimentary chocolate popsicle. Very random, it was a thoughtful gesture. Great service. read more
