Crab Rangoon
Kimberly V.

Came here on a monday evening (around 8pm) for dinner. Place was practically empty except for one more table. We were quickly seated and attended to. Food came out pretty quickly and it all tasted amazing. Chicken was just a tad dry. The beef teriyaki was devine, and so were the rolls. Best crab rangoons i've had in the area so far! While eating, server was always checking up on us and providing refills to our waters. The restaurant itself is cute. Small inside but nicely dimmed with yellow lights and a cute toy motorcycle collection by the sushi bar. Very calm and delicious experience! I'm sure the lunch specials would 100% be worth it!

3. Yankee Roll and Yellowtail Jalapeno Roll
Alison A.

Stopped in here on our way home after doing the Oak Ridge farm dairy tour. Wasn't sure about the place just based on the outside, but walking in we were greeted by lovely staff. The nice waitress took care of my children and myself very well. She even brought the children extra cherries for their Shirley Temples which was absolutely sweet of her. My son and I ordered the yellowtail tuna, the Yankee roll, and some shrimp sushi which were very yummy. My other two children shared shrimp fried rice which my daughter inhaled most of the shrimp. We also got an appetizer of shrimp shumai and edamame beans. Unfortunately, a few of the shrimp shumai did not taste very good. I did not want to bother the waitress, but I'm sure if I had told her she would've remade it. They were very attentive and very caring staff. If we ever pass through the area again we will definitely stop back.

Super tiny pieces of sashimi

TLDR = tiny portions for the money. I go to a lot of Japanese for sashimi. I just had it lost night, for example. My wife and I had Spicy tuna hand roll Sashimi Platter ($54.99) Shrimp Teriyaki A Sprite and a water. Without tip it was $86 We figured the spicy tuna hand roll would come first. Nope, Shrimp teriyaki. Then Sashimi. Then/with the very dry spicy tuna hand roll (as she made 2 quick trips) The fish WAS VERY FRESH (WHICH is why I'll give them a 1 out of 5 stars) The portions were ridiculous. (See photos). So small that the smallest piece was SLIGHTLY larger than the diameter of the disposable bamboo chopsticks. All of the pieces were 1/8th inch thick OR LESS. We asked why they were so small, and in compensation they have us 1 piece of imitation crab. Oh well. Service was decent considering there were only 3 people working there - husband (sushi chef), wife (waitress, and very good), and a busboy/cool. They should price things right and sell you what you order... Not provide pieces which are about 25% of normal size.

A place I would travel to for an amazing sushi evening!!! I always forget how good this place is because it is my backyard and not in a "foodie" area. However, I know my sushi and this place never disappoints. Always fresh, well balanced rolls with precision cuts and preparation. I love the Kani salad and peppered tuna salad (no salad) as appetizers. Fresh clean flavors to brighten the palate. Tonight we did two rolls the Flaming mountain roll and the Royal king roll. Both were well balanced and tasty, and very different from each other. Which I like. Both had texture and didn't just mush in your mouth with so many other sushi places do with their rolls. Highly recommend. Staff is attentive, friendly, and grateful for your business.

Umami is by far the best sushi restaurant you'll find in this area, maybe all of Connecticut. Every single time I've been, the food is AMAZING. Everyone I've eaten here with has loved the food and wanted to come back asap! The workers are so nice and food comes out so quick!

quick service, good sushi, reasonable prices! I get their 3 vegetables roll lunch combo often and it's the perfect amount of meal for a less than $15 lunch.

Thankful for yelp or I wouldn't have found this place! My friend lives near here so we decided to go for a sushi lunch date. It was a Friday afternoon and there were only a couple other customers. Staff was kind and attentive. My friend and I have tried many sushi spots in the state and we usually get gyoza as an app. We both agreed this was the best gyoza we've had! Their lunch specials are great, we got three rolls for $15 each. All my rolls (sweet potato, California, and spicy crab) were amazing and I loved the presentation! I'll be back here for sure!

Spicy crunchy salmon roll and Salmon Sushi

Looking for a new sushi place and found Umami. They do a lot of takeout but we were early so it didn't impact service. Also a few parties of 10. Very casual place. We liked the food a lot. The sushi pieces were on the smaller size based on my experience, but very tasty. Rolls were much better as was the special roll. Prices were decent also. Not too high like other places. All in all a good local spot where there aren't a lot of sushi places that are decent.

Rock Shrimp

We were looking for a sushi place to go with friends and stumbled upon this place that had good reviews on yelp. It certainly did not disappoint. It's had a hole in the wall feel to it, by that I mean it doesn't give off an overly elegant date night feel but the food certainly makes up for it. We started off with a few appetizers- the crab rangoons were good but our favorite was the rock shrimp. The gyozas/dumplings were solid- we tried both the fried and steamed. The fried were by far my preference. The main meals were what set this place apart. The presentation was a nice surprise and everything tasted great. We had the sushi/sashimi combo, Naruto roll, spicy crab roll and bumble roll. All got fantastic reviews. And teriyaki chicken for those looking for non sushi options. Lastly- highly recommend the tempura cheesecake for dessert as well. If I had something bad to say it would be the service wasn't extremely fast, but we weren't in a rush either.

Wonderful, fresh and very tasty!

4. Seattle Roll and 20. Vernon Roll
Rachel B.

My boyfriend and I are new residents of Manchester and decided to make the drive to Vernon in an effort to find our new go-to for sushi. You are able to make reservations but on a Saturday night at 6:30 pm, they had plenty of tables available. We ordered two salmon hand rolls, the Narcato, Seattle and Vernon roll. Everything was so fresh and delicious. When our plates got delivered, it came with cute little drawings and a welcome message. Our server was wonderful and very sweet and asked us at the end what our favorite roll was. It was really hard to choose but we went with the Vernon roll even though everything else came pretty close. The shrimp tempura in the Vernon was huge compared to what we've had back in LA. We have already recommended this place to another couple. I will definitely be back to try the sashimi next!

Meh...it's not terrible but the fish is far from super fresh on a Thursday night. A bit understaffed too and the place is only 25% full.

I'm back! The restaurant is located on 415 Hartford Tpke in Vernon, CT. When it comes to Japanese…read morefood, this is a favorite of mine. It has a very "family" feel to it. Oh my! New menus! These haven't changed in years (decades). A couple ice waters quick to show up! For my first drink? I'm having a French Martini made with Grey Goose vodka, Chambord and a splash of pineapple juice. This is good! It is a well balanced drink. They don't garnish here so I know what I'm getting. They also use medium sized martini glasses (not the small ones). For my first item, I'm having the House Green Salad. This is made with iceberg lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes. I LOVE their ginger dressing! I like the soothing music here. This salad is awesome! My friend is getting the Kani (crab). Wow! Look at that masterpiece! I think he got an upgrade! Out comes a random complementary sushi. It looks like tuna with cream cheese and avocado. This is delicious! I love pickled ginger and lots of wasabi. That's hits your nose hard! For my next item, I'm having a miso soup. This is the lowest price I've ever seen ($2.85). It is a soybean soup made with tofu, scallions and seaweed. Miso soup is a traditional Japanese soup made from a dashi stock mixed with miso paste, a fermented soybean paste, giving it a savory, umami flavor. Key ingredients often include tofu, seaweed (wakame), and scallions, but it can be customized with mushrooms, clams, or other additions. It's served hot, typically as part of a traditional Japanese meal, and should not be boiled after adding the miso to preserve its flavor and nutrients. This is hot and steamy. It is delicious! For my next item, I'm having the Seaweed Salad. Japanese seaweed salad (often called wakame salad) is a vibrant, refreshing, and umami-packed dish. It is made by rehydrating dried seaweed, tossing it with a vinaigrette made of sesame oil, soy sauce, and rice vinegar, and garnishing it with sesame seeds. I love this stiff although it sticks to your teeth sometimes. It is quite chilled. For my next item, I'm having edamame. These are a superfood. Boiled soybeans with salt! Edamame is a Japanese dish of young soybeans, typically boiled or steamed in the pod and served as a snack or appetizer, often with salt. It can also be prepared shelled (mukimame) and seasoned in various ways, such as with garlic, soy sauce, chili, or sesame oil, and served warm or cold in salads. The beans are known for being a protein-rich, healthy, and versatile ingredient. These are an absolutely delicious! For my next drink, I am having a Strawberry Martini made with Svensk Wild Strawberry vodka, sweet vermouth and a splash of strawberry liqueur. Oh wow! This is good! Yes, you can taste the alcohol here! These edamame are good! No shortage of salt here either! For my next food item, I'm having the Tuna Nuts made with thinly sliced seared tuna served with raw seaweed and a sweet miso paste. It normally cones with scallions too. We'll see. This is good! It's might and easy to eat. Yummy! Our comes a spice tuna avocado ball AND a no rice sushi dish! This is amazing! There is NO place like this! For my next item, I'm having the Ikura (A La Carte menu). Ikura is the Japanese term for cured salmon roe (fish eggs). Prized for its vibrant orange color and signature "pop," the individual eggs are typically marinated in a soy sauce, sake, and mirin brine. It is most commonly served atop vinegared rice wrapped in a strip of nori seaweed (known as gunkan maki) or over a bowl of rice (ikura don). This is a taste of the ocean! Cucumber, no rice. It's a must when coming here! The wasabi is wicked strong! It was just made today! I love this! On my For my next item, I'm having the Spicy Crab and Mango made with snow crab, mango, avocado and cucumber. My friend is having the Spicy Crunchy Scallops hand roll. These are sushi snow cones. For my next drink, I am having g a Watermelon Martini made with Bacardi Light Malibu Coconut, pineapple juice and a splash of mango schnapps. Oh yeah! This is good! Strong too! What a unique drink! This has a maraschino cherry garnish too! OMG! For dessert, I'm having the Fried Crispy Banana and Fried Ice Cream. Yeah, right. Let's see what REALLY comes out! OMG! This is IMPOSSIBLE to finish! Look at this monster! Tiramisu?! This is quite unique! Wow! My sister is ordering the Chicken with lemongrass to go and I'm ordering a quart of hibachi soup to go. This place is the bomb! There is no better!

A better than expected all you can eat locale…read more Came here because it was close by and they recently revamped their dine in to include boba tea and an all you can eat sushi and Chinese menu. Decided to give it a try and see how things turned out. Inside is clean and decorated well. Staff was very friendly and attentive. We told them we were doing the all you can eat, and got our ordering menu. Interestingly, they included boba tea as an option on the all you can eat menu. so we got drinks to try. They were a little sweet but tasty. We ordered a smattering of bites, with the idea that the plates would be tiny and we could try a bunch. The portions were smaller, but still very massive. There was many times we would take bites and it would look like nothing was eaten. You need to make sure you order light when picking your choices. The bites were seasoned well, tasty, and plentiful. The highlights being the garlic shrimp and the pepper tuna tataki. The sushi rice is seasoned correctly, and the fish was fresh. The taste of the rolls was a little bland, but soy and the wasabi aoli helped out. They do have the stipulation of food waste costing more, so the mass amounts of food did give us pause. The server assured us that there would not be any charges as they figure out how to portion. But it did limit our ordering. For the price, the quality is actually pretty good. It's pricy for the area, but you're not going to go hungry. If you get a chance to try them, they are a great option for a meal. It's not worthy of a trek, but versus other restaurants of that style you would be hard pressed to find better.

Local spot just expanded their menu offerings to an All You Can Eat, order off the paper sheet,…read morethey will bring to your table. It's a great concept, 90 minutes, all your little hear desires. A few challenges, only one sushi chef at the bar so order your rolls first, then check the other options. Cozy vibe, never too crowded so it was easy to carry on a conversation. Some noticeable things - the nearly endless variety of drink combinations was intriguing, start with green or black tea, select a fruit flavor (which were freshly muddled) and add Boba or not. Sodas are from a can and were not cold lol. The tables and booths are comfortable if you are not tall. It became a fun game of who's feet are going in which direction around the large pedestal base. Highlights are the hot & sour soup, boneless pork ribs which were succulent and tasty, Kani Salad, signature rolls were also enjoyable with a great and generous rice to filling ratio. Some things to improve are the wait times for the sushi. We've been there twice and each time thw dining area is relatively empty but it still took 35-45 minutes to get any rolls. Although it's AYCE, the sashimi and nigiri options are a la cart $1 a piece. The same checklist sheet was used, and a couple of the items were not erased between courses leading to double service. Maybe a smaller checklist that's used once or an electronic selection option from the table to the kitchen either via app or web form could solve this issue. As anything new, a time to acclimate to the changes and fine tweak solutions ia to be expected. We look forward to trying more of their signature rolls

For the #5 review of the 9 CT Lobster Rolls I tried throughout the summer of 2022, we come to a…read moreplace that honestly surprised the heck out of me, Charlie's Fresh Catch, taking the #1 spot of the 6 central CT/Hartford area rolls and #3 of the total 9. Being from the area I must have driven past this place dozens of times without ever even noticing it. It sits just outside "Vernon Center" directly across from what used to be CT Golf Land. Charlie Ballard purchased this place from the previous owner and it's been open since December 2013 and I can't believe it took me almost 10 years to even know it was there. Charlies is a very unique place, like a stand-alone seafood department you'd find in a grocery store but bigger and better. Not only do they carry the basics, they also have things you won't find in a grocery store and a large variety of seafood creations all made right in the store. In fact they have an entire glass case filled with everything from seafood salad, stuffed clams, shrimp and mushrooms to hush puppies, pasta salads and other appetizers. They also have a small selection of produce and large racks of spices, seasonings, batter mixes and more. While they carry some of the major brands they also have their own blends to go along with whatever you're picking up. So much that you might even come out with more than you went in there for. They also carry some of the popular local brands like Hosmer Soda, it's good to see local businesses supporting each other, a win-win in my book. There's also a freezer stocked with soups, pot pies and other prepared seafood (and non-seafood dishes). So much variety that I stopped there at least five times and I feel like I barely made a dent in trying what they have to offer. For the lobster roll it was a tough decision but being the lowest price of all the 9 places I tried it is an incredible value. Served on a 7 inch NE-style hot dog bun they average a little over 6 oz for the whole roll with an average of a little under 3 oz of hot, buttered lobster meat. Probably the closest thing I've found to what you'd get near the shoreline though obviously not as fresh but literally the best one I had of the 6 in the Hartford/central CT area. Small-ish looking but filling and you can't beat the price for what you get They also have a number of other meals for purchase prepared in the store like fish and chips, fried shrimp/clams, fries, hot dogs, chicken tenders and more. The clam chowder is on par with the better ones I've had and has nice chunks of potatoes, clams and vegetable. I still need to go back and try some of the other soups they don't sell hot but keep frozen (lobster bisque). With the holidays approaching I think I may be back once or twice before the end of the year, maybe not for a lobster roll but to sample the great selection they seem to always have. Wish I had found this place years ago, definitely a new repeat customer. Five Stars!!
