My family and I come here often, and the staff is always friendly and fast. The hibachi show is fun, and the rice, noodles, vegetables, chicken, shrimp, and lobster are consistently great. However, the steak is a bit lean for my taste and can get overcooked with the garlic sauce, but everything else is solid. The sushi is always fresh, the miso soup and salad are always on point, and the ginger dressing is amazing (I heard you can find something similar at Whole Foods Market). The $19 scorpion bowl is a great deal too. I've seen it go for $40+ at other places. All in all, this is my go-to spot for Hibachi in Connecticut. read more

Sake is hands down my favorite destination for high quality and reasonably priced Japanese food. The hibachi dinners are seasoned with a sauce that I haven't seen replicated at other Japanese steakhouses. I love hibachi enough to try it just about anywhere, but no one does it quite like Sake. The best thing about the hibachi meals is the noodles. They're lightly seared with shallot and some sweet wine sauce I can't place, but it keeps me coming back. Sometimes I have to order extra noodles to satisfy the cravings... Sam, the owner is a sweet guy and always cordial and kind when we come in. He makes sure that we feel welcome and have a good dining experience. The servers are accommodating and everyone who takes your order is willing to make any sort of substitution or alteration you ask for. I've often replaced the hibachi rice with extra noodles, or changed a side, and they're always happy to make those adjustments. Service is top-notch. I've been coming here since way back--Newington schools used to do a field trip to Sake for their Japan Unit taught to the fifth graders. We talked to Vivian the waitress and she said she was going to have the owner come over to talk to us. Definitely 3 stars. I've been to a lot of hibachi restaurants and this one was pretty average. The front desk person's energy was frenetic and not very welcoming. Took my mom here for her birthday dinner. Fortunately she's not hard to please and enjoyed but I personally wouldn't return. The appetizers were ok. We tried the duck rolls and chicken wings. The soup and salad were fine. Hibachi could've used a bit more flavor. I did appreciate that the hibachi chef did engage with us even though it was only a party of 3 and none of us drank. He had a nice personality and kept referring to my (senior) mom as "birthday girl" which made us giggle. read more

I had an early dinner here after work recently. The service was delivered by four different crew members. I had to wait several minutes before being acknowledged at my table. The crew member who took my order seemed annoyed by my questions. Are you kidding me? All in all, i had an ok dinner. However, I know at least three other local Japanese restaurants that soar above Sake in a great fining experience. I liked the endamame - the flavor was fresh. They need to pipe some music in for the diners throughout the whole restaurant. I could hear the music faintly. read more

We tried Sake Hibachi Steakhouse and Sushi Bar in Wethersfield for takeout tonight. Our area go to sushi takeout place was closed and it seemed like a good time to hit Sake. I'm not sure if Sake was having an off night since it was a Tuesday and many restaurants are having issues filling positions, but our sushi was below average for the area. We ordered three specialty rolls, an eel avocado roll and a sweet potato tempura roll. The specialty rolls were the Magical Roll (spicy crunchy salmon, eel, seared tuna, scallion, caviar), the Foxy Lady Roll (deep fried calimari, mango, spicy salmon, tangerine sauce)and the Black Bird Roll (deep fried soft shell crab, avocado, seared tuna, etc). The texture of certain rolls was too soft, and texture as a general matter was below average. It seemed like the rice may have been overcooked. Compared to the appearance of the specialty rolls at most area places, the rolls looked kind of sloppy. There were few clean lines, sauce spread too wide and things normally arranged in a pleasing way were off. Some of the flavors that you hope for were present, but I didn't note the freshness or clarity of flavor that you want with good sushi rolls. While the sushi was below average, service was great. The person who seemed like the owner was welcoming and friendly. He was very skilled in customer service. I wouldn't be inclined to try Sake for sushi again. I'd be open to trying it for something like hibachi. Factoring in the great customer service, I'll give Sake 3 Stars. read more

Huge improvement from my last visits. Gotta give credit where it is due. First off, the lunch prices are dirt cheap. Perfect for anyone who does not feel like spending a lot of money for lunch. This is probably one of the cheapest lunch specials by a few dollars. Well it can't just be cheap, it has to be good too. Fortunately it very much is just as good as it is priced. They offer pork hibachi here, that's already a plus since I rarely see pork offered in hibachi around here. Another plus is that it comes with rice and noodles at lunch. Usually lunch specials give you one or the other. The pork was tender and juicy. Noodles were not overly soaked in sauce and the hibachi fried rice had that wonderful smokeyness to it. One thing I would love to point out is the shrimp shumai that they offer. Yeah sure the inner mixture is the typical shrimp mixture that you see in shumai but here at Sake, it is double the size of that little bite sized one we get almost everywhere else. I'm talking authentic Dim Sum sized shumai. To top it off, the shumai also comes with a shrimp on top. It's almost like they are actually trying over here. I LOVE IT. What is important about this is that it is the same price as everywhere else. But here you get more and a little more than just more, you get a whole shrimp. I ended up getting real Dim Sum shumai the next day and obviously it's not up there but for what it is.....I'll take it! Now I also ordered a couple spicy rolls of sushi. They were SCRUMPTIOUS. If you have been to Sweet Mango in Southington, Sake's spicy rolls were just like that this time. They had that very creamy texture to it like Sweet Mango. Of course they were also tasty with the perfect amount of chew to it in the best way possible. This was a pleasant surprise. Food honestly was rarely a problem for me at Sake, it was always the service that brings it down. Today, I witnessed none of that stuff from the past. They were friendly, inviting, attentive and fast today! They have been like this for my last couple visits actually so hopefully they keep this up! Sake has been in Wethersfield for quite a long time and for those in my generation growing up in this town, it has typically been the first place eating Japanese food as it has been here nearly my entire life. Having such great restaurants like Edo Ichi and Ginza down the street from this place had me holding my breath for Sake but lately, they have done nothing but impress me with such low expectations based on ratings or past experiences. Hopefully Sake will be here for generations to come. It's not the highest or most rated in Wethersfield but Sake will always be that classic Japanese restaurant here, as long as they continue to meet the new expectations that I have for them. read more

I went on a Sunday, for my first time, when it had first opened up around noon time. The moment I walked in, it looked dark and dingy. They were still cleaning. You'd think they'd clean before opening a restaurant. That's what any DECENT restaurant would do. I asked to sit at the bar, which was directly to the right after you opened the door. The bar area, was not very clean. The bartender had his lunch in a wrapper just sitting on the counter. Receipts or something just piled up. Not really professional at all. Not to mention the "cooler" was stuffed with wines along with the fruit that they put in mixed drinks. That's pretty unflattering and unsanitary. Also, I wanted lunch and I had looked online prior, all it had said was that they opened up at noon. Perfect time for lunch, you'd think. Well, come to find out, they do not serve a lunch menu on Sundays. Pretty disappointing. There was a mother and son, a little older looking, that had just walked in about 10 minutes after I received a beverage and ordered my food. No one was there to greet them. I had assured them there were people working there. Made a joke about it, they laughed. I had also told them a few minutes later, still after no one greeted them, that they didn't serve lunch on Sundays, in which they were expecting to have a lunch menu. That right there turned them away but asked for a menu anyways. They ended up leaving. I was sitting at the bar for about an hour, tv was on but not really paying any attention. I asked about the man if I could have the sushi rolls from the lunch menu and he said on Sundays it's only dinner. No one wants to eat dinner at noon on a Sunday. I ordered a shrimp and cucumber roll and an asparagus roll with miso soup instead. The man that took my order, said my salad was "complimentary". I mean you put lettuce and vegetables in a bowl, not really a difficult job to do. I had asked if he had a la carte sushi rolls, since there was no lunch menu, in which I was originally coming in for. I was presented with 8 shrimp and cucumber and 6 asparagus rolls. The shrimp and cucumber was just literally cucumber with no shrimp in it at all. It then took the gentleman about a half hour just to give me my check when I had asked him to get me the tab. All in all, I wouldn't go back. They need a lunch menu all of the time, not just a dinner menu all day Sunday. Be professional about your business and clean your restaurant a few hours ahead of opening it so your customers aren't smelling bleach throughout the entire place of business! read more
