    Crab Rangoon
    Kimberly V.

Came here on a monday evening (around 8pm) for dinner. Place was practically empty except for one more table. We were quickly seated and attended to. Food came out pretty quickly and it all tasted amazing. Chicken was just a tad dry. The beef teriyaki was devine, and so were the rolls. Best crab rangoons i've had in the area so far! While eating, server was always checking up on us and providing refills to our waters. The restaurant itself is cute. Small inside but nicely dimmed with yellow lights and a cute toy motorcycle collection by the sushi bar. Very calm and delicious experience! I'm sure the lunch specials would 100% be worth it!

Stopped in here on our way home after doing the Oak Ridge farm dairy tour. Wasn't sure about the place just based on the outside, but walking in we were greeted by lovely staff. The nice waitress took care of my children and myself very well. She even brought the children extra cherries for their Shirley Temples which was absolutely sweet of her. My son and I ordered the yellowtail tuna, the Yankee roll, and some shrimp sushi which were very yummy. My other two children shared shrimp fried rice which my daughter inhaled most of the shrimp. We also got an appetizer of shrimp shumai and edamame beans. Unfortunately, a few of the shrimp shumai did not taste very good. I did not want to bother the waitress, but I'm sure if I had told her she would've remade it. They were very attentive and very caring staff. If we ever pass through the area again we will definitely stop back.

Umami is by far the best sushi restaurant you'll find in this area, maybe all of Connecticut. Every single time I've been, the food is AMAZING. Everyone I've eaten here with has loved the food and wanted to come back asap! The workers are so nice and food comes out so quick!

quick service, good sushi, reasonable prices! I get their 3 vegetables roll lunch combo often and it's the perfect amount of meal for a less than $15 lunch.

    Super tiny pieces of sashimi

TLDR = tiny portions for the money. I go to a lot of Japanese for sashimi. I just had it lost night, for example. My wife and I had Spicy tuna hand roll Sashimi Platter ($54.99) Shrimp Teriyaki A Sprite and a water. Without tip it was $86 We figured the spicy tuna hand roll would come first. Nope, Shrimp teriyaki. Then Sashimi. Then/with the very dry spicy tuna hand roll (as she made 2 quick trips) The fish WAS VERY FRESH (WHICH is why I'll give them a 1 out of 5 stars) The portions were ridiculous. (See photos). So small that the smallest piece was SLIGHTLY larger than the diameter of the disposable bamboo chopsticks. All of the pieces were 1/8th inch thick OR LESS. We asked why they were so small, and in compensation they have us 1 piece of imitation crab. Oh well. Service was decent considering there were only 3 people working there - husband (sushi chef), wife (waitress, and very good), and a busboy/cool. They should price things right and sell you what you order... Not provide pieces which are about 25% of normal size.

A place I would travel to for an amazing sushi evening!!! I always forget how good this place is because it is my backyard and not in a "foodie" area. However, I know my sushi and this place never disappoints. Always fresh, well balanced rolls with precision cuts and preparation. I love the Kani salad and peppered tuna salad (no salad) as appetizers. Fresh clean flavors to brighten the palate. Tonight we did two rolls the Flaming mountain roll and the Royal king roll. Both were well balanced and tasty, and very different from each other. Which I like. Both had texture and didn't just mush in your mouth with so many other sushi places do with their rolls. Highly recommend. Staff is attentive, friendly, and grateful for your business.

Thankful for yelp or I wouldn't have found this place! My friend lives near here so we decided to go for a sushi lunch date. It was a Friday afternoon and there were only a couple other customers. Staff was kind and attentive. My friend and I have tried many sushi spots in the state and we usually get gyoza as an app. We both agreed this was the best gyoza we've had! Their lunch specials are great, we got three rolls for $15 each. All my rolls (sweet potato, California, and spicy crab) were amazing and I loved the presentation! I'll be back here for sure!

We were looking for a sushi place to go with friends and stumbled upon this place that had good reviews on yelp. It certainly did not disappoint. It's had a hole in the wall feel to it, by that I mean it doesn't give off an overly elegant date night feel but the food certainly makes up for it. We started off with a few appetizers- the crab rangoons were good but our favorite was the rock shrimp. The gyozas/dumplings were solid- we tried both the fried and steamed. The fried were by far my preference. The main meals were what set this place apart. The presentation was a nice surprise and everything tasted great. We had the sushi/sashimi combo, Naruto roll, spicy crab roll and bumble roll. All got fantastic reviews. And teriyaki chicken for those looking for non sushi options. Lastly- highly recommend the tempura cheesecake for dessert as well. If I had something bad to say it would be the service wasn't extremely fast, but we weren't in a rush either.

Looking for a new sushi place and found Umami. They do a lot of takeout but we were early so it didn't impact service. Also a few parties of 10. Very casual place. We liked the food a lot. The sushi pieces were on the smaller size based on my experience, but very tasty. Rolls were much better as was the special roll. Prices were decent also. Not too high like other places. All in all a good local spot where there aren't a lot of sushi places that are decent.

    Wonderful, fresh and very tasty!

I'm back! The restaurant is located at 415 Hartford Tpke, Vernon, CT. It's been about four months…read moresince I was here. This is a family run, laid back place. The music is Classical Japanese. For our first drink. We are having a French Martini made with Grey Goose vodka, Chambord and a splash of pineapple juice. This taste great! They don't use garnishes here and I don't really care. It's well balanced! For our first item, we're having the House Salad. This is made with iceberg lettuce snd a little tomato. This ginger dressing is the best! I love this stuff! For out next item, we ate having an "Oki salad." A traditional Samurai Salad is a Japanese-inspired dish featuring grilled firm tofu, mixed greens, and a pungent ginger dressing. Key ingredients include firm tofu, soy sauce, white wine vinegar, grated fresh ginger, sesame seeds, green onions, and tomato slices. It is often garnished with toasted sesame seeds and served with a soy-ginger vinaigrette. Well, whatever it is! It's quite good! Wow! For our next item, we are having the miso soup. Miso soup is a traditional Japanese staple, combining savory, umami-rich miso paste with a dashi (fish or kelp) broth, typically featuring tofu, seaweed (wakame), and green onions. It is simple to make in under 20 minutes, offering a nutritious, comforting side dish known for aiding digestion, high protein, and mineral content. This is nice and hot! Huge bowl too! For our next item, we are having edamame. Edamame is an East Asian dish prepared with immature soybeans in their pods, which are boiled or steamed, and may be served with salt or other condiments. It is consumed in many world regions. Edamame is a common side dish in Chinese cuisine, Japanese cuisine and as an appetizer to alcoholic beverages, such as beer or shōchū. As an ingredient, edamame is used in both sweet and savory dishes, such as takikomi gohan, tempura, and zunda-mochi. These are steaming hot! Nice and salty too! Well, put comes the complementary Tuna Tataki. This thinly sliced seared tuna with ponzu sauce. This is fantastic! Wow! For our next item, we are having the Blackened Salmon which is sliced with ponzu sauce. This is spicy! Add soy sauce! This is great! For our next drink, we are having a Melon ball made with Midori vodka and orange juice. This is well balanced! No garnish as normal here! It tastes great! For our next item, we are having Ikura. Red caviar, also known as salmon roe or ikura caviar, is a popular seafood delicacy that comes from salmon and trout roe. It's known for its bright orange color, medium-sized eggs, and thin shells. Red caviar is a staple of Russian cuisine, often eaten during holidays like New Year's. It's high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, and is considered a good source of nutrition. Different types of salmon roe have unique tastes, colors, textures, and sizes. A "taste of the ocean." What's better than that! For our next item, I'm having the Spicy Eel and Shrimp Hand Roll. A hand roll (temaki) is a cone-shaped sushi item featuring seasoned sushi rice, fillings (sashimi-grade fish, seafood, vegetables), and a crisp, toasted nori sheet wrapper. Assembled by hand and eaten immediately by hand (without chopsticks), it offers a customizable, crunchy, and easier-to-make alternative to traditional maki sushi. These are good! Sushi snow cones! For our last drink, we are having the Caribbean Joy. This is made with Bacardi rum, pineapple and lemon juice. This is good! It's the rum version of the last drink! It's quite good! For our entree, we are having the Volcano Roll made with peppery salmon, gently fried, spicy tuna and red/hot sauce. Look at the presentation! OMG! For dessert, I have no idea what's coming out! Oh yeah! This is the bomb! OMG! The surprise of the night! Tempura ice cream! What better than this!!!!

A better than expected all you can eat locale…read more Came here because it was close by and they recently revamped their dine in to include boba tea and an all you can eat sushi and Chinese menu. Decided to give it a try and see how things turned out. Inside is clean and decorated well. Staff was very friendly and attentive. We told them we were doing the all you can eat, and got our ordering menu. Interestingly, they included boba tea as an option on the all you can eat menu. so we got drinks to try. They were a little sweet but tasty. We ordered a smattering of bites, with the idea that the plates would be tiny and we could try a bunch. The portions were smaller, but still very massive. There was many times we would take bites and it would look like nothing was eaten. You need to make sure you order light when picking your choices. The bites were seasoned well, tasty, and plentiful. The highlights being the garlic shrimp and the pepper tuna tataki. The sushi rice is seasoned correctly, and the fish was fresh. The taste of the rolls was a little bland, but soy and the wasabi aoli helped out. They do have the stipulation of food waste costing more, so the mass amounts of food did give us pause. The server assured us that there would not be any charges as they figure out how to portion. But it did limit our ordering. For the price, the quality is actually pretty good. It's pricy for the area, but you're not going to go hungry. If you get a chance to try them, they are a great option for a meal. It's not worthy of a trek, but versus other restaurants of that style you would be hard pressed to find better.

We stopped in around 3PM, no one else in the place at the time. We spent $75, no alcohol (+$20 tip). Appetizers, included salads, miso soup, chicken tempura and softshell crab. Main courses were seafood tempura and cashew chicken. Nothing seemed to be extraordinarily bad or good. I did notice a fly buzzing around, something that could be concerning, especially inside a sushi restaurant. I didn't give it much thought, I just remember noticing it. Later that day and night, we both began experiencing gastrointestinal issues, requiring many trips to the bathroom, it lasted thru to the next day. If it had only been just one of us, I probably wouldn't have given it much thought or would be leaving this review,. However, since we both had problems, I feel I should put it out there in case anyone else reading this had issues (or worse) from that day (Thursday, 10/30/25). We did not get sick to our stomachs, just 14-16 hours of staying close to the bathroom. I have always enjoyed everything at Higashi and never had a complaint, I say they were all 5-star experiences. After this, I won't risk coming back- I have no doubt we were served something that caused our intestinal distress. Service was great, place appeared clean and why I gave 2 stars. But it bothers me to see any flies inside an eatery, especially since the season and weather was not conducive for fly breeding, flies had to originate from inside the restaurant, they did not wander in from outside.... I've seen too many 'Bar Rescues' to know not all kitchens are kept clean and/or food stored safely. If one sees a fly or flies, it may be in one's best interest to walk out. This rule can be applied to any restaurant, especially ones that not open to the outside and/or during a season that is well past fly-breeding conditions. I learned the hard way and will make this a rule of thumb from now on.
