I've genuinely yet to have a single thing here that wasn't excellent. Portions are huge, the presentation is great, and the service has been ridiculously fast. My first visit I had two soups, an appetizer, and my entire entrée and was paying the bill within about 30-40 minutes. It was basically the perfect sit-down lunch: much better food than grabbing fast food, without turning lunch into a two-hour event. The restaurant itself has a really nice, relaxed atmosphere, and they also have the traditional hibachi tables if you want the full tableside experience. Came back again only 10 days after my first visit and ordered the exact same meal. That probably says more than anything else I could write. Easy 5/5. This place deserves way more attention.

The quote from the "About Us" section on their website is as follows: "Feng Chophouse is Downtown Hartford's premier dining experience. When evaluating with this as the baseline, Feng Chophouse unfortunately falls well short of that goal. First, the good, the service was very helpful and attentive. Patient when we were a bit slow making our initial selections but always available when needed and helpful when we had some concerns. We started with some nigiri appetizers. In our party of 4 we tried the wagyu, otoro and uni nigiri and all were good. I personally had the otoro and thought it was excellent. We also did the bone marrow. Unfortunately one member of our party has celiac and I asked if they could ensure the bread came on the side, however it was on the plate with the marrow so the risk of cross contamination was high. When I pointed this out, they offered to remake but we declined and said we'd just share it among the three of us without celiac. Unprompted, the waiter offered to reduce the price of this item which was appreciated. My wife and I both had cocktails, she picked something off their specialty list, I believe it was a cherry blossom and I just had an old fashioned. Both cocktails were very good as well. Now, for the less than stellar part. For the main course my kids split a dry aged NY strip, my wife had the sea bass and I went for the lamb. We asked for both the strip and the lamb to be medium rare, however the steak was a bit more towards the rare side with a very steep gradient from the outside to the middle where it was almost raw and the lamb was a little more than medium, approaching medium well. Unfortunately this left the lamb a bit dry and while the flavor was good it definitely took away from the meal. The kids found the strip a bit tough and stringy in some parts and my wife found the sea bass underwhelming. For sides we had the mushrooms (very good), baby bok choy and the brussels sprouts (both of which were decent but not noteworthy). It was a decent meal, but at this price point and with this level of expectation setting, decent is a bit less than we were expecting. All in all, I didn't hate the experience and again I want to emphasize that the service and the appetizers were quite good, but the mains left a bit to be desired. They can get pretty busy, so it may take a bit to get your order, but they are good at making sure you get your whole order. The service is friendly as well. We ordered a large variety. The Age Tofu was pretty good as a general consensus, though most of the fried stuff was a bit too oily. The Kani Salad was pretty good (their spicy mayo is tasty). The fish is decent quality and fresh. Most of the sushi didn't have too much rice, which I liked. The rice held together well. Still, I prefered the "tataki" (sashimi with ponzu) over the sushi. I do wish they had a regular scallop sushi, as the spicy scallop sushi is a small piece of scallop with lots of spicy mayo and rice. The special rolls (we got Fancy Tuna, Enter the Dragon, Mango Tango and Spider Roll) are pretty heavy, as most of the flavor is from the sauces. You can order things without the dressing or sauces (see the house salad without dressing....yes, it's just lettuce lol) Make sure to save room for ice cream! They have Vanilla, Green Tea (Matcha), Strawberry, and Fried (Vanilla). The Green Tea is a really strong matcha, which I love! For $28/weekend adult pricing, it's a pretty good deal.
