My latest dish here was the pad thai with beef. I was pleasantly surprised to have the flat noodles, which were still thin instead of the very thin, round noodles other places serve . Umami's pad thai was also full of flavor with a subtle heat. My partner enjoyed the Mongolian chicken. Also the shumai was good, but in very small pieces, so a 4 instead of 5 stars overall. The food has always been superior-this is by FAR the best sushi place in southern Oregon. They had 20% off rolls Monday, so how can you beat that? Our server was friendly, and we liked her. But, she did not notice my order of Tonkatsu Ramen was missing the add-on egg and she did not come back to the table to check if everything was okay. We were here last night (on Saturday) and didn't realize the restaurant name had changed and it had new owners till we got there. But the food was still great. The only complaint is the bar drinks are horrible. I ordered 3 specialty cocktails off the manu and hated all three. You would think that their own specialty drinks would be really good but they weren't. I considered only giving 3 stars because of the bad drinks but didn't think that was fair because the food was so good. I've never been more disappointed in an eating experience before in my life. Not only was the host rude, I'm taking straight up dismissive to guests - but the "fried" pork gyoza tasted like the "chef" put it in a pan with oil and tossed it for about two minutes before serving it to us. I use quotations to loosen the terms. The most disappointing part was my decision to go for my fail safe, which is the standard chicken teriyaki, what I was served was disgustingly rubbery and clearly inedible chicken. This is the old Taroko. Most of the same people seem to still work here. The menu is somewhat streamlined but if you want something from the old menu they'll still make it. Today we stopped in for a snack -- a sashimi salad and salmon belly, which were both delicious. They had uni, which is getting hard to find and was very fresh. The chef came to our table and recommended bream, which is a very tender, mild fish that we loved. He also gave us a generous taste of something called "aji" which tasted like a milder version of mackerel, which was also great. If you're into sashimi, make sure you ask what specials they have--they don't necessarily present them at the table. He's flying in fish from Japan and there's some great stuff. We came here due to lack of options mid-afternoon. First, they need to correct their menu: it's "tonkotsu" ramen not "tonkatsu". Two completely different things. I ordered chicken katsu with curry... unfortunately it was Thai curry, which made for a rather strange combination. My wife ordered shoyu ramen. The noodles were under-cooked, and as a previous review pointed out, the broth was bland with no flavor. We were intrigued by the menu and decided to eat dinner before seeing Hairspray at OSF. It did not disappoint! I ordered the spicy pork belly ramen. It came with lots of fillings, and the noodles were delicious! It was a huge portion, I could barely finish it but good for the price! I added some saltiness to my own taste but the overall flavor was yummy. My friends got sushi rolls and enjoyed them, so this place does multiple types of food well! I also enjoyed the Kabuki cocktail. It took a while to get our drinks but they were great upon arrival. Only thing stopping me from five stars is the atmosphere. It was stuffy where we were seated which was in the very back next to a weird door where people kept coming and going. Our table was also a little wobbly. Needed some ceiling fans or something! But will definitely come back here the next time I'm in town for another delicious bowl of ramen! read more

Super fresh nigiri and sashimi, my usual choice of maguro (tuna) and hamachi (yellow fin) were tops for prep and freshness. They had my fave "super dry" Asahi beer which I think goes very well with sushi bc its lighter but as strong as most pilsiners. Being "trendy Ashland" we expected a large tab, and it was indeed, sushi/sashimi is priced on the menu PER piece, so "comping" it to my fave Belltown, Seattle sushi place Wasabi made it very pricey ... but worth the ambiance and company we were with. read more

We're from small town Kentucky, but have managed to have quite a bit of delicious Thai during our travels and within an hour of our home. Because Thai is our favorite, we were very excited and ambitious about trying well rated Asian fusion in Ashland. However, we were pretty disappointed. The only thing that was delicious and worth repeating was the sushi--had the crazy sushi roll and it was fresh and delicious. The pad Thai was an odd consistency (too liquidy) and not a great flavor with very little texture. The Mongolian beef was chewy, rubbery, and high in sodium. read more

My husband got the tuna and salmon chef special and it was delicious and huge. They allowed me to make up my own veggie rolls with any ingredients they had, which was exciting and rare as a vegetarian. The lychee ice cream was good and also a large portion. Had food delivered. We ordered Chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki with the shrimp tempura. Also ordered unagi and dragon roll. The teriyaki was dry, but the tempura was good and had a good variety of veggies. However, the sushi was seriously lacking on portion vs price, and was not that good. Our 1st place we ate in Ashland. Although the food was delicious, my husband and I both ordered sushi, the waiter was terrible. We were 1 of 4 tables for a late lunch and everyone else was already eating. Forgot my drink and all I wanted was soda water with ice. Had to ask him 3 times to refill our water, it was 96 degrees out, so it was hot. Ended up asking the other server to bring me a fork (I'm chop stick handicapped) because I asked ours twice and nothing! He was all smiles when he handed us our bill and I think my husband over tipped him. I've been going to this sushi restaurant since it used to be called Toroko sushi. Back then it was the best sushi place I had found in the rogue valley. After they changed the name and management this place started going downhill, but it wasn't too terrible. Well I went tonight for the first time in about 3 months with my family, and I couldn't be more fucking disappointed in the service tonight. I was the last person in my party of 6 to receive my Dynamite roll and sashimi. Yes, it was tempura fried but this took way longer than that. I finally get my simple meal after my party was already done with their food, and it was over fried. Sent it back and ordered the Jessica Albacore roll and they took another 30 fucking minutes. I was royally pissed the fuck off, and the new people that they have employed at this place are fucking heinous. Fuck Umami and their bullshit if they think that behavior and service is acceptable, with such a high reputation. read more
