I usually get the classic Tonkotsu Ramen, very hearty and the meat is so tender. I love the broth and the noodles are cooked perfectly. The Honey miso is a popular ramen, tasted just like the tonkotsu but has a slightly sweeter taste. I tried the seafood ramen for the first time today and it was pretty good. Still had that hearty pork broth taste. It came with shrimp, squid and scallops. I loved the fried scallops. I added an egg and it was the perfect topping. My boyfriend got the Spicy ramen level 2, and it actually came with red spicy ramen so that was different. This restaurant is pretty busy around 8pm. There was about a 10 minute Wait. (Since it is a Saturday) I tried their wasabi squid and it had a distinctive fishy taste to it and wasn't fresh. I visited this restaurant for the first time today and it was so amazing!! It's scary trying a restaurant for the first time and Joanna made it such an amazing experience! Update: The last time I was in Umaido was about 4 years ago. Today I give them a 3.5 star rating- while I am appreciative of having ramen in Gwinnett, the experience for me was a little underwhelming having had Ramen in other cities and trying all the Ramen places in NE Atlanta. I will say that their broth is pretty hard to beat, but it seems that their noodles didn't have that chemistry that went with their broth- slight mismatch, as if though two separate kitchens made the dish and turned it out to customers. We got the Honey Miso Ramen and the Level 2 Spicy Ramen. The Honey Miso Ramen was a soothing flavor- the sweetness is very very faint. The Level 2 spicy ramen was definitely spicy enough to make our noses run, so I recommend sticking to level 1 or 2 if you're someone who can take some spice but are not out to destroy your stomach parietal cell lining. We came at a later time- 45 mins before closing time, so perhaps they were just trying to scrape the bottoms of their soup bins before they can go home- so the broth was super concentrated and delicious after a whole day of dehydration and concentration, likely. The noodles felt a little off- I am not sure why. The spicy ramen was definitely spicy- it came with 2 slices of pork belly, hard boiled egg, and some onions. I appreciated that the eggs was not hundred percent cooked to where it looked opaque and rubbery but it was soft on inside. The noodles just felt a little "lifeless" to me. We did get some orange colored ramen with the spicy ramen but even that couldn't off balance that it didn't seem to pair well with the broth. The broth was delicious and concentrated and noodles just felt like it belonged to some other dish that was not ramen. Heck, I felt even if I took the shin ramen noodles only out of the packet and threw it into the broth here, it would have better chemistry pairing! So I am not sure why I felt this disconnect. Noodles were chewy enough, thin enough-- a little too thin for my liking to be honest- and kind of stuck together as if they had put the noodles out too long and soup after and then noodles had stuck together. read more

This has been on my list for a long time. So I have a decent amount to say. Location is interesting. Its not hard to find but there's tons of other places in the same shopping center. Traffic getting there and leaving is horrible. Deal with it. The building inside is cute. Its not too big not too small. I love the decorations and the drawn on wall. Aesthetically pleasant plating, fun eclectic decor, good customer service but the food was a hit or a miss. I've had pork belly buns but never pulled pork buns. The hirata buns were decent, for you Koreans out there it's similar to jangjorim flavors. Takoyaki was good but piping hot so be careful! The tonkotsu ramen was a no-go for me and the ultra spicy ramen was better but level 2 may have been too spicy for me. I may give level 1 a try or something other than ramen. The plaza is full of great Korean restaurants. About 4 years ago this place was the #1 spot to get Ramen on my opinion. This place is still amazing. I love their tonkotsu ramen, Chasyu Don, and takoyaki. Their ramen noodle is very thin making it different from other ramen places I've been going to. The thin noodle is served with a rich tonkotsu soup. Their Chasyu Don also pretty good. Must try when ordering Ramen is Takoyaki. Its like the best appetizer. Overall this place is best in the area. Great services and great food with amazing environment. One Con I may say is that this place gets too busy at times, The line is very long. So make sure you don't hit the traffic. I was wondering if another place could top Jinya which is my favorite ramen spot, but this place may have become my new favorite!! I got the soymilk ramen with fresh garlic and hot sauce on the side. I recommend getting the spicy-men which are the red noodles with a hint of spice to add a little more flavor. I also added corn bc I like the crunchiness in my soup. Hubby got the ultra spicy at level 40, which was spicy even for his palate but he still liked it. Next time he'll probably tone it down to 10 or 15. This place hits the spot especially on a cold/rainy night. The only reason I took off a star is because of service. When we got there, we wrote our name down and were just waiting a while before we were acknowledged and there was a table that was open. This is probably one of the worst ramen experiences I've had. A shame as this place used to be really good last year. Not sure what happened. The ramen was disappointing and flavorless. The egg wasn't marinated and poorly cracked. Noodles seemed like soba noodles instead of ramen noodles. Meat was either over cooked or they use pig feet type meat. As the meat is very tough to chew. Definitely doesn't melt in the mouth as proper ramen meat should. Also, the menu says to have "rich broth" you have to pay another dollar. What? You need to pay extra for a flavorful dish?? Wow. It's borderline offensive. It definitely looks like low effort. No care in the preparation of the dish or customer experience. In terms of service, we received our appetizers after our main dish. Which makes little sense. The shrimp buns were cold and the buns seemed as if they were defrosted as it was soggy and wet. The outer layer looked as if something was peeled off of it. Feels like the passion for food was ripped off the buns. The tofu was fine. Crispy and hot, should have the generic teriyaki sauce on the side so that it doesn't make the tofu soggy. The roll is generic. Way more imitation crab over the shrimp. It's called fried shrimp roll, but should be called imitation crab with a bit of shrimp roll. But the name would be a bit too long for their nicely remade menu. Long story short: disappointing and confusing experience in terms of how the food came out. Ramen was bland. Buns were sad, and reminded me of my crippling depression. Egg was poorly made and no effort. I don't know what happened to this place. But any passion for Japanese ramen/cuisine has been ripped out. Wow! I was so surprised at Umaido for stepping up their menu game since the last time I came here. Im not much of a ramen fanatic but my husband is so we come here pretty regularly, and I was always forced to have ramen because they had nothing else on the menu. But not anymore! They have a brand new menu with stuff I really want to try! Like for example the rice balls with pork, katsu don, and the wasabi octopus rice bowl! I still got ramen today though, the ultra spicy level 3. This is probably the tastiest ramen dish Ive had in all of atlanta (yes, even better than jinya). The noodles are red too, to represent the death by fire. The level 3 is perfect for me, it gives the right amount of burn without it being overpowering. I had it with rich soup and its yum yum yummy. I also had the fried shisito peppers with citrus salt as the appetizer and it was SO good. Its a light starter that isnt carby so you dont feel as bad for eating it lol. The citrus salt goes so very well with the peppers. Just wish some of the bigger ones were cooked more thoroughly cuz some of them were really spicy lol. Overall this place is high on my favorite places to eat in suwanee/lawrenceville. Their new menu makes me want to come back and try all of their new things! read more

Egg was closer to hard boiled, which was perfect because prefer that over soft boiled. Overall the broth was just ok -- after I certain point, I just couldn't have it anymore.
