Tenya Japanese Eatery is one of those hidden gems you'd easily miss if you weren't looking for it. Located on N. Decatur Rd. at a very busy intersection, it sits tucked into a tiny shopping center, blink and you will drive right past it. Parking is limited, and you can immediately tell the small lot fills up fast, especially during peak hours. I stumbled upon Tenya while in town on a Tuesday, scrolling Yelp in search of a solid lunch spot, and I'm glad I did. This is a family-owned Japanese eatery that specializes in comfort food, and according to their website, everything is made from scratch, which absolutely shows in the quality. I placed my order online and picked it up with ease. I ordered the Shrimp Saku Saku appetizer along with a fresh garden Tenya salad. The shrimp were excellent, perfectly crispy with a flavorful panko coating that didn't feel heavy or greasy. The salad was impressively fresh and came with their house-made ginger dressing, which paired beautifully with the crisp greens and added just the right balance of sweetness and tang. Inside, the restaurant is quaint and cozy, with a decent amount of seating for its size. The customer service was warm and welcoming; the lady at the counter greeted me kindly and had my order ready shortly after I arrived, making the pickup process smooth and pleasant. A nice bonus is the selection of packaged Japanese snacks and drinks available at the counter, always a fun touch and something you don't see everywhere. Next time, I plan to dine in and explore more of the menu, along with sampling some of those snacks and drinks. Tenya is a great example of simple, thoughtfully prepared food done right. First time here, came in to get a "snack" that wouldn't break the bank. The cashier was super sweet & helpful. I ordered the chicken sandwich & the fries. They make everything fresh, took about 15 minutes to get my order. The Sando was sooo good! Chicken was freshly fried, the cucumbers gave it a nice crunch and the sauce was good. The fries didn't have enough of the seaweed, IMO, just tasted like regular fries. I didn't care for the sauce that the fries came with...it was like a sweet soy sauce, just didn't hit. I came here on a Tuesday evening while I was waiting for the doors to open at Eagle Eye Bookshop to attend the Ashley Poston book launch event. The staff was friendly and helpful with deciding what to order. The pork gyoza was tasteful and delicious. Very palatable. The Tenya chicken Udon Japanese Curry Mazemen was so good. I love udon noodles because of how thick they are and it was perfect. Loved the pieces of potato I got to eat throughout the dish. The breaded chicken was cooked well and moist inside. I brought my son and daughter here for lunch on a Sunday. The place is clean and spacious for the small number of tables for dining in. I saw a couple get take out which seems popular. Prices are reasonable and I enjoyed my miso udon soup with fried tofu. My son got the 24 hour chasu pork bowl which he liked. Daughter got spicy ramen soup which she wished was spicier. We ordered three types ramen. It was just meat green onion and noodles. There just was no flavor. No cabbage, sprouts, mushroom or garlic. The miso was very weak. Tenya is a great place to stop by for a quick bite that won't break the bank! The menu is very short & simple serving fried chicken/tofu sandwiches and different types of Japanese rice bowls. I ordered the Chicken Katsu with Tenya Sauce which contains Japanese slaw and cucumber pickles and paired with side of Tenya Furikake Fries. Also ordered soy eggs to try! The fried chicken was great and not overcooked, and was even better with the refreshing taste from the slaw and cucumbers. (This type of sandwich is most likely better while eating at the restaurant rather than ordering by UberEats or Door Dash since it can potentially become soggy by the time it gets to you.) The side of soy eggs were also great and the yolk was runny - just how I like them! This was enough shared with a friend to keep me satiated until my next meal. We were the only ones at the restaurant at the time so we were able to get our food within probably 10 minutes. That pork chashu rice bowl is amazing. I like simple dishes and it's a very simple dish but it's well done. The egg and veggies make it look pretty but I came here for the pork. It's rich, flavorful, and excellent on rice. Chicken katsu sando my wife ordered was good too but it needed some type of sauce. The fries were extra crispy and had some furikake seasoning on it which is nice. Furikake seasoning is my crack. I can't think of a food it won't enhance. Would I come here again? Yes. Ordered the Gyoza, Japanese Curry Rice Bowl, Gingeryaki Rice Bowl, water and a Bottle of Tea. The Gyoza took awhile to come out, and when it did it was cold which isn't what we had in mind. Stopped in on the way home for dinner. First time here and we enjoyed ourselves. It was quiet and relaxing. It only took 5-10mins for our order to come out. The dining area and bathroom were both clean and brightly lit. We both had the Braised Pork rice bowl which came with picked radishes, homemade pickles, Japanese slaw, and half of a soy egg. We devoured the slaw and wished there was more. Next time we'll order a side of that to go with our bowls. The sauce and pork were very flavorful. Stopped here on a whim with my husband. The place is super cute on the inside. You all straight in to the ordering counter. The menu is posted on screens on the wall and the person at the counter was super nice and explained the menu. Although there's meat in the sandwiches, bowls, and salads, they can substitute with tofu for any order. My husband ordered the Curry Chicken Katsu Sando with fries, and I got TENYA Rice Bowl with 24 hour Braised Pork Chasyu (braised 24 hours, rested for 24 hours, and then grilled. Food was delicious! Flavors blend really well, you may taste a bit of tart from the slaw but the salted savory ness of the katsu. There was a sauce that came with my tenders that pairs so well with it. I was nearly finished with the sauce after my first tender, I just couldn't stop. The fries was next level, love the seasoning, loved the seaweed. I wondered in at 5pm on a Sunday. The service was great and the food was delicious! I ordered a Soba Noodle Tenya salad with Gingeryaki grilled chicken and I would definitely recommend it. It's sweet with a hint of savory in the cucumbers and sesame. The reasons this establishment does not get a 5 is for the following reason: I left a tip for my waiter on my card, not realizing that only cash tips go straight to the employees. Although this is legal for all non-tip wage making employees, it's still unethical. All card tips at this establishment go to the restaurant and not the workers. Super cute new Japanese restaurant that opened up yesterday a couple doors down from Tea Leaf and Creamery. The atmosphere is great and I really enjoyed the mellow music in the background. There's also an Instagramable background in the front! Owner is also really friendly and attentive! Currently they have a special that includes free miso soup, a soda, and hand sanitizer with each order. Curry Chicken Katsu Sando- pretty solid but didn't really taste much curry flavoring to it. The menu is small as it focuses on a few items. No alcoholic drinks but there is Asian speciality teas and sodas. I'm obsessed with Tenya and I've only been there once. I hadn't had any katsu since moving to Atlanta, so I was so happy to fulfill my craving at Tenya. On a friend's recommendation, I came for dinner, and had the chicken katsu sando with the tenya fries. The sando is a sandwich of thick toasted Japanese style bread, with thick juicy crispy katsu, cabbage slaw, and cucumber slices, topped with a sauce of your choosing. I went with the katsu sauce just cause it's a classic. This is a perfect sandwich. You've got bread that holds its own and doesn't disintegrate under the heft and juice of the sando guts. You've got crispy, you've got juicy, you've got acid and crunch and savory flavory. I would change nothing about this sandwich. You're perfect just the way you are. If you get the sando "meal" which is an extra $2, you can get a side. The tenya fries are some of the crispiest fries I've had recently, topped with furikake, with a side of Tenya mayo. I don't know what Tenya mayo is, but it is good. Honestly it was a bit surprising to get such good french fries at a Japanese place. All that for $12 is insane. And super satisfying. I am definitely coming back to try other things on the menu. They have katsu curry, too, which I was eyeing. It is counter service (order at the counter and they'll bring the food out to you) and pretty fast. On a Friday night they were busy but had enough tables to seat everyone. We had the Miso soup; the Braised Pork Bowl and Gingeryaki Rice Bowl that both came with pickled red radish and Japanese slaw and they were incredible! We also ordered an additional side of chicken and pork; and Japanese drinks: white peach soda/cider (see attached pictures) and a Ramune. Oh... and a side of rice with curry sauce. I'm so glad that it did because the restaurant is in an unassuming little shopping plaza by Emory, and I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise. I was in the area when I was looking for a restaurant to visit for lunch this past Monday. I first went to a different restaurant, but decided I didn't want wings. Parking can be a challenge since there are many busy small businesses in the same strip mall at the corner of Clairmont and Decatur Rd in Decatur. Parking is free, and I was lucky that I found a space near Tenya. I was just walking in the strip mall, looking for a place to eat when I saw Tenya's sign. I hadn't noticed it before, so I went inside. There were only three other customers in the restaurant; one person was eating, and the other two were waiting for their food. I walked up to the order counter and looked at the menu. Im the kind of person who easily gets intimidated by multiple items on menus, especially if it's a place that's new to me. The guy behind the counter most likely saw on my face my confusion of deciding what to order, so he greatly assisted by explaining everything on the menu after asking me, "Is this your first time here?" After explaining everything, he told me that the Tenya rice bowl with the 24 hour braised pork was one of the more popular items. That info was enough for me, and that's what I ordered. The employee told me that I could have a seat and he would bring my food to me. I asked him if I could get a glass of water, and he pointed out the two pitchers of water on the counter; one was plain water with ice, and the other one was iced water infused with a stick of cinnamon. I was intrigued, so I got a cup of the cinnamon infused water and sat down at one of the tables. I enjoyed the water, which had just a hint of cinnamon flavor. The employee at the front counter was also the server, and he personally brought the food out from the kitchen to the appropriate table. He brought out my miso soup first. Although the miso soup was a little salty, just like miso soups normally are, it had a great bold flavor. I loved the presentation of the multiple contrasting colors of the food in my Tenya rice bowl. The food was absolutely wonderful tasting, with fresh and crisp pickled red radishes, crunchy Japanese cole slaw, and half of an egg that was cooked so that the yolk was cooked just enough so that it was still soft but not runny. Clearly the best part of this meal was the braised pork belly, which, even though they were thickly cut pieces, practically melted in my mouth. This part of the meal was like having flavorful bacon, and the sauce on top of the pork only enhanced the flavor. I will definitely have this same meal in the future! The only thing that I would change is that I would request that the sauce not be put on the egg, since I thought it sweetened the egg too much. Throughout my meal, the employee from the counter came to my table, and also the other tables, and asked how the food was. I told him that everything was delicious. About midway through my meal, we had a great conversation, or, rather, I took the opportunity to ask him a lot of questions. I found out his name is Cenk, which is pronounced Jank (rhymes with Frank), he is the co-owner with his business partner Miguel, who later came by to introduce himself to me, and Tenya opened earlier this month. After talking with some of his friends who dropped by, Miguel came to my table to talk with me. He actually brought a couple of crab cakes and offered them to me, not knowing whether or not I ate crab (which I do), and that's when Miguel introduced himself to me. The crab cakes were so full of flavor and I loved them. Too bad they're not on the menu (yet?)! I loved it when they told me that they haven't had time yet, but they plan on expanding their menu to include vegan offerings, among other things. Cenk told me that it's difficult for them because they are very busy (which is a good thing!) and they currently don't have any help. Cenk and Miguel, thank you so much for providing such great service, focusing on delicious food and a high level of customer focus.
