We've been here so many times over the past ten years. Late night back from out-o-town trips, weekend dinners, celebrations, this place always delivers high quality food. It's our go-to place in midtown. But tonight, it was a failure. Came in right after 6 pm. Crowded, but we're lucky to get the last table available. Took 10-12 minutes to decide what to order: sashimi and two rice dishes, katsu curry and unagi don. Waited 20+ minutes and the waitress apologized for the delay quoting the busyness which we understood. Fortunately, the sashimi came out shortly, and as always it was delicious. Waitress also said the rice dishes would take another 5-10 minutes. About 10 minutes later the katsu don came out, hot and delicious as it always had been. But no unagi yet, was told another 3-5 minutes. It's another 10 minutes, and the waitress said she had no control over what the kitchen did. To make things worse, the rice was not warm or hot, but less than lukewarm. Felt it had been waiting on the counter too long for the eel to be cooked. We let the waitress know and her response was: "What do you want me to do? I don't have control over what the kitchen does". Again. By this time it had been over an hour since we sat down and we had lost appetite for the dish. So we chose to cancel it on the receipt, paid the rest of the amount due, and left. Had a look at the faces of the kitchen staff and the other waitresses, all looking gloomy. read more

This is my go to place for sushi in Atlanta and ramen, too. This is not the trendiest place but definitely the most authentic in my opinion. You can go to lots of other places for overpriced stuff slathered in eel sauce and mayo if that's your thing. But if you are looking for sturdy classics like salmon nigiri ($4.50 per piece) and toro fatty tuna nigiri ($8 per piece) that melts in your mouth, this is the place. Service is attentive even if it gets a little hectic. The wood decor is charming and adds to the overall character of the place in my book. And Sapporo on draft at $5 per glass or $10 per mug is always a good idea. Parking is plentiful in the lot (just scan a QR code to register your vehicle for 3 hours). Have wanted to try this spot for years and was left disappointed by the experience. We went in a Wednesday night which was the move as it's a small space and was crowded, can't imagine how it is on a weekend. Ordered the cheesy potato corn for an appetizer since I love corn cheese. So disappointing. It was French fried covered in cheese with miscellaneous pieces of corn- did not feel cohesive. The ramen was good but they totally mistimed bringing it out. My sushi took close to 30 minutes to come out and the ramen was brought out first. So by the time the sushi came out, my partner was done eating. The sushi roll was not worth the wait. They charged over $2 to add cream cheese. Overall not sure I would return. Food is pricey and 2/3 dishes were disappointing. read more

It's always packed and the vibes are nice (though loud) inside. Make sure to scan the QR code in the lot for free parking or you'll get booted! Food overall leans salty. It's great if you wanna grab a bunch of affordable appetizers with a beer, but not so good if you're looking for a nicer culinary experience. I know that Izakaya is understood that you are not getting the fanciest of dishes, however, Ginya differentiates themselves with the cozy experience and they know each and every regular, and treat them with the utmost restecp. As an izakaya, they truly are above and beyond. Many may write negative things, but those are usually just a one-off experience. Get to know Momo, the guy with the tuna nigiri on his face. He may be loud but he means the best, and truly thinking of the guests first. read more

I came here specifically for ramen, I am very picky on what I think qualifies as good ramen. I came here on a Wednesday evening. It was easy to find with plenty of parking and a lot of open tables at 6pm. The staff were nice and efficient. I got the spicy tonkotsu ramen. The noodles were perfect and the chaschu was very flavorful and tender. The broth was okay but not my favorite. I appreciated that the spicy sauce came on the side for me to add however little or much I wanted and I only needed maybe half for my perfect level of spicy. I would say this is one of only three other places in the Atlanta area that I would recommend for authentic Japanese ramen. I would definitely recommend the ramen here. So I was leaving an event in the area and we decided to go ahead and check this out. I had never been before but I was sure glad I did. It's in a shopping center so there's free parking in that area. It doesn't look like much. It doesn't look like it's super big, but it actually has plenty of space. Maybe not to fit a group of 20, but you will be able to fit groups of people and if you wanted to go in share food. The service was good, it took a little while to get service, not sure what happened, but once we got there we were good. We came in and sat right down immediately, and enjoyed the decor on the wall. If you're a fan of anime or Godzilla or Japanese lore or anything along those lines, you will definitely appreciate this place! They do have a bar there but I didn't get anything to drink, all I got was water. Which was perfectly fine. It's not a full bar as if you can order everything under the sun but they do have enough alcohol to get you where you need to be. And they have plenty of sake choices as well. Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen - the ramen was solid. It was basically the regular Ramen but they gave you a little cup of sauce to spice it up, and spice it up. It did! It gave it the right amount of heat. The noodles were tender, the meat was flavorful, it hit on all cylinders. Pork belly - the pork belly was good, really good. Came with a sauce on it on a skewer and it was amazing. I think I might have got a couple orders of those! It was very tangy and flavorful! Shaka shaka potato - Now this threw me off a little bit. These are french fries LOL. I don't know what they were trying to do, but they were french fries. I came with seasoning in a bag. You put the seasoning in and pour it in the bowl. And I will say this, the seasoning felt like you was going to give me hypertension LOL! The salt was off the charts, but in case you're wondering what they are, they're french fries! Takoyaki - So these are octopus balls. Really good. Really flavorful. They're chewy and tangy and the sauce is amazing. They even come with a really good presentation about them because they basically moves. You'll have to go to see! Chicken and scallions - this skewer was probably my favorite skewer and I don't know why because it was very simple. It was grilled and marinated chicken and scallions, but for some reason it hit so differently! I couldn't figure out why LOL. I did order more of these too! Just that good. So we didn't go to dessert, and I wish I really remembered the name of it. It was the bean paste fish cake with green tea ice cream. No, I'm not a dessert fan by any means, and I tasted it and it was okay, but it wasn't really my thing. But if you like a little bit of hint of sweet not overly sweet, this may be your bag. Overall, you're going to go ahead and come here and not be forced to break the bank. They have specials that you can check out, so everything is very affordable and reasonably priced. Still 6 stars guys! My favorite restaurant! I left somewhere where the food was NOT flooding at 9pm to start looking for places that were still open and that were appetizing. And lo and behold I cannot believe that I forgot about my favorite restaurant. I was with my friend and it was his first time there and let's just say he was in heaven. I always leave so full and everything is ordered that you could want for two people $100. Insane. The service on this night was a little slow, but I also don't think that they anticipated as many people on a late night Wednesday. I've never had that as an issue before so it's almost not worth mentioning. They have walls that were covered with anime, posters, and stickers feel like they remove some of them that's how often I'm at this restaurant lol but I'm excited to see what replace them. I was really looking forward to trying out this place, but sadly, I left feeling a bit disappointed. Maybe we just didn't pick the right dishes. Expansive and exciting menu. This is my second day here and I just can't get enough of this place. The staff are so nice and welcoming! I went to Japan at the end of last year and I've been obsessed with Japanese food ever since then. Most places you go to are sushi restaurants that may have a few other Japanese culinary offerings as well... NOT THIS PLACE! Yes, they do have sushi, but it's not even on the main menu. What they DO have is 6 pages chock full of fried, grilled, or raw delicacies that you just have to taste to believe. This place reminded me of the izakayas I visited in Japan - same interior decor, style, and of course, the food! The okonomiyaki with noodles was delicious. Others in the group I went with enjoyed their ramen and skewers as well. The Izeko jelly sparkling sake (yuzu) was delicious and refreshing. They didn't have the yuzu chuhai I originally wanted but offered orange instead...and I was handed half an orange and a citrus juicer to prep it myself which was an entertaining experience. Wasn't quite the yuzu chuhai or highball I loved while I was in Japan but the other food and drinks were great! There is a separate alcove in the front for groups that requires shoes to be taken off. My sister and I stopped in during a storm and so glad we did! We went in without any idea of what we wanted but the huge menu gave us so many options! We opted for some takoyaki and gyoza starters. Then for our entrees we got a bowl of ramen, grilled eel, and sukiyaki. Everything came out pretty quickly and definitely delivered. Our waiter was super nice and patient with us since we could not make up our minds what we wanted. The vibe of the place is cozy and warm. Extremely welcoming considering there was a crazy storm going on outside. The only thing I didn't like too much was that my highball was pretty flat and weak. Just so so food with literally no service... We waited for 40 mins , not even served with appetizers and found out something wrong when all 5 tables after us got served full dishes. The waiters didn't check on us during the whole meal. The food was really just so so, didn't compensate my bad experience at all.. also they didn't clean up any dish even tho our space is full. A group of colleagues and I visited Ginya Izakaya while in ATL for a work trip. I was surprised to see that they had a corner booth large enough to fit our group (10 people), but it was perfect! The restaurant had a casual atmosphere and was comfortable. We ordered a variety of drinks, appetizers and main courses once we were seated. While there, I tried: - Warm Sake: Something interesting to try, but wasn't something I'd order again - Cream Soda: We thought this would be like the cream soda you buy at the store but instead it is melon soda with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. This isn't something our group liked or that I'd recommend. - Beef Skewers: I wasn't a fan of these as they tasted like charcoal from the grill but some others in the group enjoyed them - Pork Yakisoba: Absolutely delicious and something I'd order again! The service was good, but I didn't realize they had already added in a 20% tip for themselves as it isn't very noticeable on the receipt. My friend and I came here the other day for the first time. We both got the spicy tonkatsu ramen. It came with the spicy chili oil on the side so you could make it however spicy you wanted it to be. We shared the pork belly skewers. The ramen was good. The pork skewers and pork in the ramen wasn't good at all. They were both overcooked and very chewy. Service was good. If you love raw fish, look no further! Growing up eating sushi made by my dad, I'm extremely cautious and mindful about where I'm eating any raw seafood. Since Ginya is always busy, and you can see the chefs preparing the bowls, I felt comfy grabbing a sashimi don bowl here. My first experience was great, and for $20 I couldn't resist this tuna, salmon & eel bowl. I've come back more than a handful of times now and every time the fish is high quality the tastes so fresh. The appetizers are also great, my favorites are the squid legs and chicken karaage. The agedashi tofu left much to be desired, and I wouldn't recommend. The breading around the tofu was too soggy, and the sauce was lacking in flavor. The vibes of the restaurant are very cozy, yet open. Great place for a date or for moderate sized groups! read more

Ginya Izakaya has a traditional and cozy environment! You can sit at the bar or the booths. The server was attentive, but slowed down a bit after my group had been there for a while which would have been fine--but our waters were not refilled (even though they were empty) so I was a bit thirsty by the end of my meal. I ordered the Sakusaku Shrimp, Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen, and Taiyaki. The Sakusaku Shrimp was crispy perfection and the shrimp itself tasted fresh. I also liked the dip that came with the shrimp, which I believe is the Ginya aioli sauce. I expected my Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen to have a reddish broth, but the restaurant gives you some chili oil in a side cup that you can add to the broth. I added the entire cup into my broth, but I felt like the chili oil did not add much spice to my broth. However, it was still a yummy dish! Lastly, I ordered the Taiyaki which came with a red bean filling and vanilla ice cream plus whip cream and sprinkles on the side. I really liked this Taiyaki because it seemed fried, which is not the norm for this dessert. It was crispy on the outside, but very soft and thick on the inside which made for a great texture combination. In addition, the red bean filling was delicious! One of my friends also knew one of the chefs at the restaurant and he was very friendly and fun to chat with! My friends recommended it after a Friday night dinner they were enthusiastic about. Based on my experience the salmon avocado roll was just ok. The rice was not sticking together. Did not like the udon that much, we've had much better in other places. The place is beyond casual and to me the ambiance does not match with the type of cousins. I was blown away by how amazing this was!! And for such a good price! We had to wait about an hour to be seated and did not regret the wait for one second once we were inside. We ordered the gyoza (delicious), chicken yakitori (cooked absolutely perfectly), a pumpkin roll (also perfect and my personal favorite), and a beef rice bowl that I can't remember what it was called but also was great. Food here was pretty good! The salmon was fresh and came in thick cuts. However, wish it came with a few more slices and less rice. The eel and beef bowl was pretty flavorful. Didn't take pictures of the other food but the ramen and yakisoba noodles were good too. I would pass on the salad though, it was a small portion and the sauce was pretty bland. The service was great as well but they do have a limit of how long you can sit at a table. Which kinda sucked since some of my friends noodles came out super late. I knew something was wrong when we entered the establishment, and there was neither a greeter nor the customary greeting of "IRRASHAIMASE!" typical of izakayas. Against my better judgment we sat down for what we hoped, based on other reviews, would be a solid meal despite the spotty service. We were, unfortunately, rather let down by some of the worst unagi we've had anywhere. In addition to being strangely mushy, it had several rather noticeable bones. The miso salmon collar, another dish we've had numerous times and are rarely disappointed by, also rated very poorly. In addition to being rather burnt, it was unusually oily, and neither the meat nor the miso glaze seemed to have any flavor. We did have one sushi roll, which was fine, although rather small in portion size. Looking around as we left, it seemed as though all of the other customers were having sushi, so perhaps ordering from the kitchen wasn't the right way to go. This place is great!! We've been here a good amount of times and the food has always been good. The katsu curry is our favorite by far! It comes steaming hot with a spicy curry sauce. The pork belly is stellar. We get a few little things to start and meals and still don't spend a fortune. The service is good. Food comes out quickly and they have a generous wine pour which is always appreciated. It's a little place but we've never had to wait for a table. It's a very casual vibe. Cute authentically decorated izakaya! Delicious food, but horribly slow service. I ordered the: - 5 skewer combo - A great appetizer to share. It's chef's choice on the meat that you get so we got a combination of several chicken skewers, a pork belly, and a mushroom skewer. Everything was well cooked and I love the grill char flavor. - Ginya Don - Really delicious and fresh! Eel was so tasty and I think the presentation was great. In terms of service: We were seated in one of the rooms because we had a larger party (6 ppl) and I think they just forgot about us. The table right next to us was constantly getting beer refills and getting chatted up by the waitress, but our food took 45 minutes to come out after the appetizers. The food also came out unevenly, so no one wanted to start eating yet because we wanted to wait for every couple to get their food. Water refills were basically not happening at all.
