Located in a strip mall off Route 9, at first glance Udupi Bhavan isn't that appealing. This is not your average Indian restaurant; if you want fancy plates and table service, you'll have to go somewhere else. At Udupi, you order at the counter, grab a pitcher of water from the fridge, and wait for the deliciousness to come out on styrofoam plates. What Udupi lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in the quality of its food. The extensive menu is all vegetarian, but you won't miss the meat. Every dish is perfectly spiced and packed full of flavor, from the samosa chat to the dosas. The entrées surpass those of any local Indian restaurant. I highly recommend the Malai Kofta and the Channa Batura- both are perfection. They have a buffet on Saturdays which is good, too, but I prefer to order off the menu. Quality has gone down in the recent times. The batter that they use for their dosas and idlis seem to be old which makes the dosas thicker and hard. They also use a lot of plastic cutlery which in 2019 is not okay. I would give this place a a skip. Let me start with the positive here: the service was good, employees were friendly, and I received my food pretty quickly considering how many people were dining here. I also love that everything is vegetarian. The prices are also very fair for the portion size. The not-so-good: This is a small location that is pretty popular. I'm not sure if I ordered the wrong foods though since nearly every other order I saw was a dosa. I ordered: Mango Shake - They were out of mango lassi when I was ordering so I opted for the mango shake instead. It was just okay. The mango flavor was lost with the creaminess. It was also really thin and not very cold. 4/10 Vegetable Korma - Okay. Not the best, but also not the worst I've tried. You get a lot of vegetables which fantastic, but the curry sauce didn't have much flavor. No spice and not terribly creamy. 5.5/10 Papadum - They serve your run of the mill papadum here. Very airy and overall nice. I do wish they served it with crackled pepper though since papadum can be a bit bland otherwise. The chutneys it came with were also average. 7/10 Iddly - Very average. This is a small hole in the wall type of place. We went on Sunday after visiting the temple and it was completely packed so we got our food to go. We mostly get Dosas (like crepes) since I can't find another place close to me. The dosas are good. we had the aloo masala dosa which really good with right balance of potatoes. We also had pani puri which was good but felt that puri could be fresher. The place is completely vegetarian so if you are meat person then this may not be the place for you. However, recently my girlfriend and I placed a to go order using her phone and afterwards the cashier or someone who has access to her phone number persistently harassed her for a date and "to be her friend"- despite her initial constant rejection and soon after not even replying. What a terrible restaurant, with horrible food, service and ambiance. Slot Udupi Bhavan into the category of cheap Indian restaurants that serves low-grade, oily, sloppily-prepared food on styrofoam and paper (there are many of this type of Indian restaurant, heavily clustered in the Bay Area, northern Chicago and Jackson Heights in NYC, among other places). I grew up eating Indian food, particularly South Indian food, and I can honestly say this was some of the worst I've ever had anywhere in the United States. We started off with the samosas ($3.50). These were over-fried, with a rock-hard exterior and then steaming hot interior which was all cumin and basically nothing else. What a nightmare. Served on a paper plate. We next had the masala dosa, the quintessential South Indian staple ($7). The dosa was at best mediocre; the dosa itself was not crispy enough, and the potato stuffing that came with it was woefully under-seasoned and bland. A couple of bay leaves could have added some flavor. It was of course served on a paper plate, but this this dish represented at least a decent quantity of food for the price, even if it didn't taste great. Next we had the onion and hot chilli uthappam ($7.50). Uthappam is a type of pancake, and usually it should have a sour-ish taste tempered with herbs, chili and onion. In this case, all we got was bread, essentially, with no other flavor or spiciness at all. And, at $7.50, this was a pretty damn expensive and crappy pancake. My friend and I didn't even bother finishing the dish. Served on a paper plate, again. Lastly we had the aloo gobi (potato-cauliflower) curry ($8.50). This was an oily, flavorless mess dumped into a small styrofoam bowl (even worse than paper). It tasted awful. There was no spice, no attempt at subtlety with the use of oil, and the dish consisted of basically two pieces of potato and one piece of cauliflower. What an epic tragedy of a dish. And it was a tiny portion for a high price, at that. The dish is served with a paper plate of white rice, which also sucks (I've never seen Indian restaurants offer brown rice, but it should be an option). You eat with plastic forks. So, the food sucked. The utensils and flatware are wasteful and unsound ecologically-speaking. The service was also curt and unhelpful (you place your order at the counter and then have to keep walking up, piece by piece, to get your order once it's ready). There is no ambiance: you sit at cheap plastic tables and drink water out of tiny clear plastic cups. Bleak is one way to describe the ambiance. This is what prison must be like. And, like any other Indian restaurant of this price range, you also get many families with screaming babies, which is the final nail in the coffin. Udupi Bhavan should be ashamed of itself for offering such disgusting, terrible food, and for being so completely environmentally negligent. This is an atrocious restaurant and I would suggest that you go to Thali Too in New Haven if you're looking for South Indian food; if you want North Indian, Zaroka in New Haven is a good bet. I've also heard decent things about Bombay Olive, IndiGo and Priya, all in the Hartford area. In any case, do not come to this restaurant. read more

(the highly decorated veteran Yelper). This man knows his food, and I had to tag along yet again on that Indian food train. *choo choo - all aboooooard!* 2.) The Food: a.) Samosa Chat: Oh man. Okay, so at first glance, especially someone who is not use to eating Indian or isn't use to leaving their comfort zones of Indian, it looks kinda like (refuses to say). But when you pick up that fork, and press down into that wonderful papered dish, you feel like you are in another world, let alone country. What I could say from first to last bite was complexity. There was cool yogurt on the top, the inside was hot and spicy, with chick peas and cut up samosa. The samosa itself had the same texture and consistency of bacon. It would be sacrilege to say that it was, because this was a Indian vegetarian restaurant. I mean that garnish of cooled yogurt over the hot and spicy mixture was an excellent compliment. It was gone in 60 seconds........starring Nicolas "Anthony P." Cage. b.) Andrah Dosa: Once again, this lentil wrap was the size a little longer than my forearm and hand! This is a wrap made out of lentils, rice, green chilies, ginger, cumin, and salt. Inside was a green chili's, onion and some other spices. On the side they gave me a Coconut Chutney and a tomato based soup to both eat and dip. c.) Galub Jamon: They do not make it from scratch, or at least how I saw it prepared. They took it from a fridge and microwaved it in front of me at their counter. But I was so full and so content from the other dishes that I didn't care. I cannot believe I never knew of this hidden gem in all my years dining in Middletown. The authentic southern Indian food is really awesome. The breads and crepes are made per order, the spices are devine and the Sambar is delicious beyond description. I absolutely love this place and will no doubt be returning many times to sample the whole menu! Truly as good as it gets. I don't say that lightly. I've been to India and I have Indian friends who text me in Hindi sometimes and I have an Indian partner and so I think I can truthfully attest to the fact that this place is DELICIOUS. We came here on a Sunday afternoon after paying a visit to the Indian temple next door (are you taking me more seriously now?) at about 1pm. The place was not full yet, surprisingly. I ordered the rasa onion masala dosa - my favourite!! - along with idli and vadai and lassi. The dosa is on point, really. It is a massive serving for the price you pay (~$10 per dosa). I got it to go and had the other half for dinner. I enjoyed the sambar very much, too. The only thing that was missing I'd say was the lack of drumstick, but hey! I was a very happy person that night. My bill for all that food came to $15 per person. The place is vegetarian only so I would caution all the Tony Bourdain anti-vegetarian types out there, but whatever. The lack of meat just makes it even more authentic. I have been here for lunch many times, both to eat-in and take-out and I will be here many more! I absolutely love this place. The food is fantastic, the menu has tons of great options and the people are incredibly nice. Since you have to go to the counter to order and pay and bring your food back to your table, I think that saves a lot of valuable time, rather than sitting around waiting to be served. This is a beautiful thing when you're on a lunch break! As I'm sure you're aware if you're reading this, Udupi is a vegetarian restaurant but they have many, many delicious options. I have tried lots of their dishes, including the palak paneer, vegetable korma, Mysore masala dosa (dosa filled with chutney, potatoes & onions), plantain pakora, chai tea, mango lassi and many more. Their food is always perfectly spiced and the portions are generous, which is great because if you can manage to take some home, it's even better the next day! The decor isn't fancy, but you won't even notice while you're delightfully shoving rice and curried vegetables into your face. I had heard many good things about Udapi Bhavan from friends and people online, I am surprised no one has reviewed it yet! When I heard it was in Middletown, I expected it to be right on the main strip there, but it's a few miles down the road in a random plaza. I never would have known it was there, if it had not been for word of mouth. I mostly heard about it from my vegetarian friends, because everything they serve is vegetarian. When we pulled up, the parking lot was completely empty. Granted it was a Sunday night (for some reason I find myself with a lot of dates on Sunday nights), but we trudged on, having both heard good things. First impression: this place is BARE BONES. There were no frills when you walk in the door. White walls, white floors, a bunch of tables scattered about. So, we walked to the front where the counter was and a very friendly fellow handed us some menus and joked around with us while we decided what we wanted to get. If I could remember what the name of the item was that I got, I'd tell ya. I just kept calling it "the spongebob," because it was literally 2 HUGE thin rectangular-shaped crispy pancakes (with holes all about it). with potatoes and onions and some other fun spices and veggies inside. It was verrrrry tasty, but it looked like Spongebob. I can equate the taste most closely to a very large Latke. And I love latkes, so this thing was very tasty! This place is very laid back, very "no frills." Everything is self serve. You order your food at the counter, they give you a number, you go pick up your tray and take it back to your table. Nearby there is a glass fridge case of various drinks (some mango and other fun fruit juices and smoothies), but also several pitchers of water. If you want water, you go get some. There are tons of plastic cups and plastic utensils and napkins handy... all self-serve. I kind of liked it. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I liked it. It was cheap, very tasty, the people were nice, and about 15 minutes before we left, a HERD of Indian people came in to eat. All the tables filled up in a matter of minutes! I love trying new food and if you want to go outside of your comfort zone but not so far out that you get, say diarrhea or food poisoning, this is a great place to do that. This place serves authentic south Indian food or so they say, they coulda given me a leather boot and I would've bought it. After tying the food I can definitely taste the authenticity. First of all, this is a pure vegetarian restaurant (part of the authentic south Indian food culture), so don't bother looking for the curry chicken like my girlfriend did. They don't use an overwhelming amount of spices but the flavors are still very potent. I had their curry with spinach and potatoes with rice and it was fantastic. They also have enormous butter crepes wrapped around various ingredients but we got potatoes and onions. The really simple dishes are still the best and it was all so good. I suggest dipping the crepes in curry since there's not enough rice and the spicy soup is very tasty as well. For beverages we tried the chackhoo shake or however it's spelled but it tastes like a blend of coconut and milkshake and it was pretty good even for a coconut hater like myself. It's the next best thing to going to Southern India, where the cuisine is different than most Indian restaurants in the states which are based on Northern Indian cuisine. Oh, yes. I had been to nothing but American-ized Indian restaurants before coming to Udupi Bhavan...then, I ate here, and my mind was blown. Yeah, it's in the middle of a sort of depressing strip mall. And yes, you'll be eating cafeteria style at fold-up picnic tables, in a beige room devoid of decoration. And if you're Caucasian, well...you'll probably be the only one there (mind you, the family that owns/works at this place has been completely welcoming and friendly every time I have been here, and are willing to explain anything on the menu that you don't know). But you know what? Every thing I've gotten here - every single time - has been completely, utterly delicious. The malai kofta are perfectly cooked...lightly fried for crispy edges, still moist on the inside, with raisins, nuts, and other goodies packed inside...swimming in the most perfect curry sauce. Vegetable korma is loaded with fresh veggies (cauliflower, carrot, potatoes). Vegetable samosas are perfectly fried and stuffed with vegetables that are coated in a dry curry rub. This is Southern Indian, and completely authentic - as such, you will not find any meat on the menu. You order your food at a counter, then wait for your number to be shouted when your food is ready. If you come on the weekends, be prepared to deal with huge crowds for the lunch buffet (many Indian families frequent this place because it's next to the Hindu temple). They do have an inconveniently high credit card minimum ($15), so if you're planning on eating less than that, bring cash. Almost everything on the menu is below $10. Do you love Indian food? Then Udupi is the place to visit. We were concerned from the reviews that it was going to look a little dated inside. Like it needed a make over. But the food is superior to almost any other Indian food restaurant I have visited. My son laughed at how large his paper dosa was! We all split it with our meals because it was so big. The food is prepared quickly and everything tastes very fresh. The portions allowed us to take some home. We thought the prices were a little high, but maybe it's because we're ordering too much. A meal per person is almost too much because of the portions you get. And when your dosa is the size of a baseball bat, that's a lot of food. Most of the times our visit to Udupi would be because we would have visited the temple. There are two temples right across Udupi. This place is always busy whenever I have been. Its famous for the Authentic South Indian food (Dosa, Idly, Vada, Pongal, Bisi Bele Bath, Poori). Food is just delicious which carries the Authentic flavors. My favorite pick here would be the Dosas. They have a wide selection of different varieties of dosas. And of course the chilli bhajji. Try the chilli bhajji if you can manage the heat, it rocks your tastebuds. This is more like a cafe than a restaurant. Self service, waiting time is not bad. The decor is just plain. Its kinda suffocating when there is a big crowd. You could also BYOB from the next door. They also have thali's. Buffets in the afternoons. I have been to their buffet once, and its worth the pay. The staff cleans the tables after each family finishes their meal n before the other family takes the seat. The place is well managed. The tables n chairs too are not fancy. Okay, I'll admit it. Pulling up, I was a bit daunted by the strip-mall location of Udupi, as well as their vegetarian menu, as WELL as their lack of a liquor license (I mean, who DOESN'T like an ice-cold Taj Majal to wash down a spicy Indian meal?). But I was reassured me that it would be worth it. IT WAS! My patience was rewarded with warm service, COMPLETELY GENUINE south-Indian cuisine, and, even though I had to walk next door to a liquor store and purchase a Taj Majal myself, an ice-cold beer. Service is cafeteria style, wherein one is greeted by a plethora of mustachioed men in white uniforms cooking in the spotless kitchen, which sorta adds to the whimsy. The place really isn't like any other in central Connecticut that I've tried. The food was spectacular, spicy & more interesting then your run-of-the-mill Chiken-Tikki-Marsala Indian restaurant. Try the batura (a large puffy bread) - delicate, piping hot, and a bit sweet. The Samosa chat was excellent too. I absolutely recommend this restaurant for the cuisine. It's so nice to have southern Indian food in the area, since most Indian restaurants only seem to serve northern Indian around eastern Connecticut. The few times I have been here, my table seems to often be one of the few, if not only, table of white people. I always figure it's a good sign when the majority of the diners are made up of the ethnic group that matches the food. Thanks to Udupi Bhavan, I have been able to introduce my husband and parents to dosas, a southern Indian staple I fell in love with the first time I experienced them in Chicago over 10 years ago. Your best bet is to choose one with the veggies you love and you can't go wrong. I particularly love anything with cheese, so the cheese dosa has my vote. Traditional Indian curries are also great here. I haven't ordered anything I haven't liked. Saag Paneer and Malai Kofta were both excellent on our most recent visit. There is nothing fancy about this place. It's quite dodgey looking actually. But don't let the lack-luster appearance fool you.
