    Lamb Samosa
    Ana B.

I'm not very familiar with Indian cuisine, I've had it once before, I don't know what it was, but I remember enjoying it. I was with a friend who suggested we stop at Utsav Indian Cuisine for a light lunch. She wanted their Mango Lassi, there's the sweet and the salty to choose from. We went with the sweet. I think I should have gone with the salty. We also got Lamb Samosa. As soon as we placed our order, the waiter came with the bill...he hadn't even brought the water yet. I asked him if he could wait a bit. Our Lassis came out, and I wasn't impressed, as we were sipping, I'm not kidding but another waiter brought another copy of the bill... what is going on?? On to the lassi.. this is very heavy on the yogurt, a little mango. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be, but it's not for me. It made me very thirsty after. The salty version has spices in it, I might have liked it better. The Lamb Samosa was very tasty. This is a triangular shaped pastry stuffed with spicy lamb and peas. It came with mint and tamarind sauces for dipping. This was delicious, with just the right amount of heat. The service was unfortunately awful. Not just because they kept asking for payment long before service was delivered, also because we had to ask for plates and napkins. Maybe it was just an off day, or someone was just hired. I really enjoyed the lamb samosa with the tamarind sauce.

I am a fan of the food at Utsav Indian cuisine; however, I cannot tolerate being told that "we are closed" and being asked to leave at 2:01 PM when the lunch hours state 12 to 2. I would assume that the lunch hours mean that is when they will seat you and that if they seat you they will give you enough time to enjoy your meal. Such is not the case. I was brought to check while I was still eating, was asked again if it was ready a few minutes later, and then, as stated was asked to leave. They have lost my loyalty. I am a regular customer who has been here probably over 50 times. There will not be another visit. Customers, particularly regular customers, should mean something.

One of my favorite Indian restaurants around. From the awesome ambiance (even with a fish pond with bridge over sections) to the awesome food and flavors, this is a must try Indian restaurant in the area. The drink choices are also great but what sets the place apart from others is the true depth of flavor that they have and deft touches of spice when requested. You can go all the way from 5 alarm to no bells at all on heat, all while still getting true flavor in what you are eating. The prices have gotten a bit higher since Covid making this a harder place to visit on the regular, but it is still my current favorite Indian restaurant in the state.

    Mysore Dosa

Utsav has an extensive menu of Indian dishes that are not commonly found. They also have different dosas. I ordered the Mysore dosa, Balti Baingan (eggplant), tawa fried fish, and amma's fish curry. Each entree comes with rice, but the rice didn't seem fresh. I was excited but the only dish that I got which was enjoyable was the fish curry. Prices are a bit on the high side. The Mysore dosa comes with a coconut chutney and sambar. It was waay too spicy for me to enjoy. Be aware if you cannot handle spice. I felt it burning in my stomach as spicy chutney was spread on the whole crepe. The coconut chutney and the sambar was good and not spicy at all. The spice level on the fry fish and fish curry can be adjusted. I opted for mild. The tawa fish was a bit bland and still had a fishy smell. The fish curry was good and creamy. I couldn't eat the eggplant dish since I found it too salty.

Pretty good Indian food for the area! My friend and I started off with masala dosa- similar to crispy crepe with dipping sauce. This was my first time having it and thought it was pretty yummy. My friend said that the dosa here isn't as crispy as dosas at other places she has tried before. For entrees, I got the chicken tikka masala and my friend got the chicken korma. We both agreed that the sauces were really good but the meat was very tough. The garlic naan was one of the best I've tried though- soft, buttery, and covered in garlic. Overall, good experience and I would come back!

The food here really hit the spot. It is a popular restaurant as they were pretty full on the weekend. All the foods were flavorful and plentiful. The only issue was that the heating wasn't working on one side and if you aren't lucky you would feel a cold breeze on your feet. I would recommend the Utsav platter if you want to try a little of all the meats.

    (service dog info)

I have a service dog. He's been tested and passed the state test, he's fully recognized in the eyes of the law. Today I came in and my party was relegated to a part of the restaurant that was away from customers eyes. The host that sat us told us that if anyone asked it was a service dog. We were confused and I said, "he is a service dog." and he nodded like we were playing the part. My friend said "no, like an actual licensed service dog." He looked panicked and then left. It's so scary that he was willing to let in an untrained dog into a restaurant. He just assumed my dog was a pet and allowed us in. Scary! That can put real service dogs in danger! (like my dog is!!) I left an info card on service dogs and what businesses are allowed to do about them. Will post a review later about their food!!

Utsav is one of the best Indian places in the Hartford area. I have had a lot of Indian food, and the food here is authentic and delicious. The servers were so helpful in making recommendations and accommodating food needs. Definitely need to get the vegetable samosas- however- they do have a bit of a kick to them so if you aren't a fan of spice keep that in mind! Chicken tikka masala with garlic naan is a must.. and you need to try the rice pudding!

Love the sign. Love the food.

We had another great takeout meal from Utsav. I'll stick with what's new for us. Tawa Tamancha is on the tandoori grill section of the menu and the dish is essentially seasoned and grilled vegetables like broccoli, green beans, potatoes, onions and peppers and grilled paneer. The vegetables have great flavor and texture. This may be my favorite showcase for paneer. The dish comes with a rich side sauce that is tasty, but the dish really stands on its own. Balti Baiingen is a mashed eggplant dish that is well seasoned beyond my understanding. I'd recommend it. Utsav keeps the streak going.

We ordered the tawa tamancha and paneer malai. The tawa tamancha was quite good, it's like an Indian version of Veggie Fajita. The ambiance was good and the restaurant was well kept. The staff were prompt and pleasant

Tandoori Chicken to go, sooo tender yum
    Rachel S.

Every time I order from this place I'm always so satisfied. I love their vegetable samosas. Their naan is delicious. Have recently been ordering their tandoori chicken which is real tender and flavorful, served with a sauce which I'm pretty sure is the tikka masala but it's sooo good.

    Gajar Halwa dessert... so delicious!

First there was the Tindahan City Filipino Market and its separate restaurant in the plaza they share with a Domino's. Now, in the plaza with the Super Cuts, there is an "India Foods Market" (which has been around for a while), and a separate "India Foods Restaurant" (which seems to be a few weeks old). India Foods Restaurant seems to focus on street foods such as Dosas, Chaats, Puris and Samosas. I did not notice any meat dishes, or certain entrees that have become familiar in many Indian restaurants in America. No tikka masala, korma or saag, etc. You order at the Counter. There is a small dining section. I elected to dine in. The dining room was more functional than nice. I asked for a recommendation, and the person who helped me recommended the Chole Bhatura. I didn't know what that was, but I went with it. About 10 minutes later, they brought two disposable plates. One had a large compartment of saucy chick peas, a small section of red onion and lime, and a couple chili peppers for additional heat as desired. The second plate had two large Bhatura. If you've had Puri (made with white flour), you'll know what I mean when I say Bhatura (which is made with fermented flour) looks similar to Puri. If you're not familiar with Puri, think of Bhatura as similar to puffed up, fresh out of the oven pita. However, Bhatura is cooked in oil and is lighter. They were good and looked cool. The chickpeas had good texture. The sauce was pretty good. Kind of a golden brown, with earthy mildly spicy seasoning. The red onions, chilis and lime allowed for a bit of customization. I tore the Bhatura, and used the pieces to soak up the sauce, or to make a chickpea and onion taco. A fun way to eat. I enjoyed the Chole Bhatura. I will likely return to explore more of the menu when I need a quick bite. Four Stars

There was a noodle shop right next door that was okay, and we wanted to give this new place a try as well. The inside is sparse and still rough with construction. The space use to be a açaí bowl location, and they still had some of the signs and decor from that location here. There's also some ripped up flooring and exposed piping in the middle of the floor. Don't plan on dining in unless you can handle some rough corners. The chef/owner was nice but shy, the wife was much more extroverted and very kind. The chef took the order, the wife took care of the interactions and check ins. Missus really enjoyed interfacing with the lady, she enjoys supporting the local businesses that go in with passion. We got the chicken 65, samosa chaat, and chicken khorma. Food came out steadily, and we dug in. The samosa chaat was good. Spiced lightly, but good flavor. The samosa was slightly cold in the middle, but the flavors were there. The chicken 65 was also lightly seasoned but the chicken crisp and tender. Needed a dipping sauce to impart some extra spice. The portion was large and well done. The chicken khorma was great. Tender chicken thigh with a nutty creamy sauce with a little spice. The highlight of our meal. We also got naan, garlic and peshwari. The garlic was good, very garlic forward but the naan seemed to be very thin. There was a lot of rips and holes through the 4 pieces we got. We also got the peahwari naan, which was little light on the filling but has the right flavors. Pricing was reasonable, especially given the quality vs the portion. It's not a dine-in location as of yet, but the food is perfect for to-go. It's good Indian done well, needs to work on the spice level of their dishes but it's ideal for those who don't like heat. There not a lot if decor either. The music is authentic and they play Indian MTV. The immediately start you out either a beer pitcher of water. For my drink, I'm having a Limca (you just grab it out of the cooler). Limca is an Indian multinational brand of lemon- and lime-flavoured carbonated soft drink made primarily in India and certain parts of the U.S. It contains 60 calories per 150ml can. The formula does not include fruit, relying instead on artificial flavours. In an interview in 2008, Ramesh Chauhan of Parle Bisleri revealed that he had approached the owners of Duke's Lemonade, requesting them to share the formula for the drink with the promise not to make it in India, which was turned down. Chauhan decided to come up with his own formula, which he launched under the Limca brand in 1977. In 1992, when the Indian government allowed Coca-Cola to return for operations, at the same time as it admitted Pepsi for the first time, Coca-Cola bought local soft-drink (soda) brands, from Parle Bisleri owner Ramesh Chauhan including Limca, Thums Up (a cola-like drink), Maaza (a mango-juice based drink), Citra (a clear lemon-lime drink), and Gold Spot (orange flavour). Prior to 1988, the original formula of Limca contained brominated vegetable oil (BVO). After worldwide reports of ill effects of BVO, its use in soft drinks was banned in India. As a result of this ban, the formula for Limca was changed. This is good (artificially flavored or not). For my soup, I'm having the Chicken Hot and Sour (spicy). This is a popular Indo-Chinese soup made with mixed vegetables, mushrooms, soy sauce, herbs and spices. It has a balanced taste that is spicy, tangy and hot. The soup is usually thickened lightly and flavored with ingredients like ginger, garlic, vinegar and pepper. This is good! It's not too salty. It's hot and spicy. Lots of chicken too (it's small chunks and at the bottom). Ceramic plates and metal silverware. That's a good sign! For my appetizer, I'm having the Chicken Makai Kebabs. Otherwise known as Reshmi kebab, this is [technically] a Pakistani dish of boneless chicken marinated in spices, cream, and cashew paste, and then grilled in a tandoor. The name "reshmi" translates to "silk" and describes the kebab's tender, silky texture. Some recipes use ground chicken and cream cheese to achieve this silky texture, creating a "seekh" kebab instead of a "boti" kebab. Indians make it a lot too. This is a LOT to eat! It's steaming hot! It takes a while to cook so be patient. The spices are defining unusual. I like the Indian version of cole slaw too as a side dish except they use of onion. It's crunchy. Yummy! There is a new place opening up across the mall called Sakura Haven. The new venue plans to feature an anime theme with cosplay, a live DJ, karaoke, and other themed entertainment events. Signs were recently installed at their new space. Sakura Haven has been operating as a pop-up at various bar around Connecticut. The new venue is their first physical location. For my entree, I'm having the Chicken Madras. Chicken Madras is a flavorful, spicy, and tangy Indian curry originating from the southern region of India and the city of Chennai, formerly known as Madras. The dish features chicken in a rich tomato-based sauce made with a unique blend of Madras curry powder, which is a mixture of South Indian herbs and spices. The curry is known for its heat, which comes from chili peppers or paprika, and its tangy, citrusy notes. I'm told they use coconut here. You can add naan but I don't eat a lot of bread. This is steaming hot! I love this sauce! It's not very spicy but I like it! What a great meal here!
